Time: 1 day 50 minute lesson

What do the students already know?Students should already have experience with solving multiplication and division problems. Students will use this reasoning to solve ratio and rate problems.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities.

Materials:Ratio Worksheets and Math TextbookSmart boardInspirationPictures of animals and technological devices

Procedure:1) Teacher will lecture, showing examples to explain the idea that when comparing two

characteristics of an item, the ratio is the same no matter how many items you have. (For example: the ratio of legs to beaks on a duck are the same no matter how many ducks you have).

2) Discussion and practice through group activity in groups of 2 or 3 and opportunity to ask questions as needed.

3) Review and homework practice with the opportunity to ask questions if needed.

Assessment:At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to identify ratios and use reasoning to answer problems in the book for a grade.

A Brief Description of Lesson:1) Discuss the term ratios and explain term through Inspiration model.2) Show pictures of animals and technological devices. As a class, identify the ratio of the item

displayed.3) Construct a t-chart to explain ratios as well as matching problems with answers on the smart

board for practice.4) Break students into groups of 2 or 3 and identify in t-charts ratios of body parts in the group

including, eyes to heads, fingers to hands, legs to feet and other comparisons the students come up with.

5) Have students share group results with the class.6) Assign homework in the book & additional worksheets due next class.
