Meet Dave Dennett, our Board of Trustees’ new treasurer.

He may be a very familiar face. Dave has been in banking for most of his career, beginning at Hamilton’s West Side Federal, and traversing other financial institutions until he reached First Merchants Bank in Oxford. He reached out to meet Oxford Seniors’ Sabrina Jewell and Steve Schnabl two years ago when he retired from First Merchants and started doing his handyman business full time. The name of his company is Better Living Home Solutions and is focused on handyman services for seniors.

Dave is married with two adult daughters and a son that is in middle school. He lives with his family in Reily Township. He is active in his son’s life and uses him as an “apprentice” in some of the home repair projects that Dave undertakes.

Dave is no stranger to non-profit work. For many years he served as an active member of the board for Hamilton’s Emergency Money Fund. EMF provided financial assistance for those having difficulties paying rent, utilities, and other important living expenses. It was entirely funded from community donations and had no staff.

The Dennett family, representing several generations, recently donated the World War II Purple Heart and uniform of ancestor Lt. Vern Dennett to the Butler County Historical Society in Hamilton. An Army Air Force member, Lt. Dennett was killed during a bombing mission over Hamburg, Germany in July 1943 while serving as a navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress. The donations will be part of a World War II exhibit being developed by the Society’s museum.

At Oxford Seniors, Dave will chair our Finance Committee and work closely with Business Manager Lisa Brunckhorst and Steve Schnabl. The Finance Committee oversees the creation of the annual budget (working closely with the Personnel Committee because a large proportion of the budget relates to Continued on page 4

4 | OXFORD SENIORS

Hello Oxford Seniors Members,

I hope all of you are well and enjoying all that Oxford Seniors provides. As the holiday season approaches us, it can bring lots of emotions—both enjoyable and sometimes stressful. It is a time to spend with family and friends and reflect on the year. It can also be a time of loneliness and grieving over the loss of loved ones. It can be a time of joy and happiness and grief all in the same day. The holidays bring many emotions for everyone; therefore, now is the time to make sure we are a close community of friends and neighbors. It is a time to gather. It is a time when we need to lend an ear to another who may be struggling with grief and loss and let them know they are not alone. It can be easy to isolate from others and it can quickly become a daily habit to be alone. Let’s do all we can to prevent solation.

As we approach the new year, resolutions are com-mon. I’d like to invite you to an end of the year resolu-tion—engage with Oxford Seniors and try a new activi-ty, meet a new friend, or offer a friend to spend time with you during the holidays. We have a diverse com-munity full of opportunities. Oxford has many activities during the holidays—consider doing something new.

I wish you a peaceful and enjoyable holiday season. Oxford Seniors is here for you and we look forward to an exciting 2020.

Sincerely,

Randy Allman

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Hello for December 2019, Another year is ending. As I write this in mid-November, I am looking forward to a birthday at the end of November. It’s significant to me, because I will become one year older than my father had been at his death, when I was ten. Some of you may know that I had a recent emergency room visit. A prescription change reacted poorly with my heart meds. As I lay there in the care room with ten people working on me, I realized how eager I have been for months to pass this birthday milestone in my life. During our Holiday Market (and, as an aside, thanks for everyone who came to kick off the season, purchase items, enjoy the delicious bean soup lunch, etc.), I had an enchanting conversation with Marjorie Therrien as she shopped. She was telling me about her Bucket List, one she is just developing at age 95. By chance later that weekend, my wife and I watched the movie “Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Those similar experiences made me realize that hitting my 68th birthday was a personal Bucket List item – one that I expect I have crossed off as “completed” by the time you read this. Let me share some of the other goals/dreams I have created for myself, and I ask that you consider sharing some of yours with me, like Marjorie did, when we see one another. Professionally, I still have a goal of helping arrange for a gift of $1 million or more to a non-profit organization that I cherish (guess which one I’d recommend first?). I want to travel to Italy, India and to more of the Caribbean countries. I’d like to visit the chateaux of France and tour on the canal boats there. I’m looking forward to my 50th high school reunion next September, and my college 50th four years later. I think I want to skydive. I’d like to finish unpacking from our move three years ago and begin planning how to downsize for the next one. I want to see the Grand Canyon, the Pyramids and Mount Rushmore. I’d like to learn conversational Chinese and become

acquainted better with some of our foreign student visitors. I want to take some ILR courses or sit in on classes at Miami. I long for holding our first, and subsequent great-grand(s). Guess that means I am also looking forward to attending the weddings of our four wonderful grandchildren… although I realize they may choose other ways to express their relationships, and, so I also want to be accepting and supportive of their life choices, whatever they may be. I want to renew my marriage vows with Jan, and to enjoy our 50th anniversary together. I want to write down family memories to share with my cousins about our early lives and the stories I remember from our grandmother; also family memories of Jan with my step kids, and the grandkids. Continuing a wish I remember having as a young child, I want to reach 100 just like my good friend and Wednesday Big Band dancer Vera Keck did during November (hearty congrats Vera!!). Gee, I guess I have lots to accomplish, and I think I could still add more! I wish you happiness as this year ends and I wish you great experiences for the upcoming year. Please don’t be a stranger at Oxford Seniors. My best,

Steve Schnabl, Executive Director

The names of all members, new or renewing, who have paid 2020 dues by January 30th will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card from Kroger.

Oxford Seniors to Install New Automated Check-In System in early February

A new, automated check-in system called MySeniorCenter will soon be installed in the foyer at Oxford Seniors. It’s specifically designed to help our staff members manage the various sign-ups and sign-ins, and improve the way we report our services to our funders and community.

Moreover, by quickly and accurately detailing which services we’re providing, the system will increase our chances of receiving additional funding in the future. Today MySeniorCenter is being used by over 900 senior centers across the U.S. and Canada—so it’s a proven tool.

A Change for the Better The new system is extremely easy to use. Here’s how it works:

All visitors and volunteers will receive a small keytag. (The card contains no personal information, but it will allow the new system to recognize you.)

Instead of signing into our book, you’ll swipe your keytag at the scanner, or you can enter your name on the touchscreen (see below).

Press the touchscreen to select the programs you’ll be participating in that day.

Press FINISH.

A Smooth Transition Even though MySeniorCenter is designed to be user-friendly, Oxford Seniors staff members and volunteers will be available at the check-in computer for the first several weeks to help people operate the new check-in sys-tem. We want to make the transition as seamless as possible for everyone. Once MySeniorCenter is running smoothly, our registration process will be more efficient and we’ll stand a better chance of receiving funding for future activities.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & COMMUNITY EVENTS Butler County

United Way

Toys, Coats and Teddy Bears—Oh My!

Now through December 13th

We will be collecting new toys and stuffed animals as well as new or gently used coats. The Teddy Bears and toys will be distributed through Butler County United Way’s partner agencies to children and their families who are in uncertain situations; a teddy bear, other plush animal, or toy will help to bring a bit of brightness to them

this holiday season. The donated coats will be distributed through the homeless shelters in Butler County for their clients who are in need of a warm winter coat. Both adult and child-sized coats are needed.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver/Family Support Group Monday, December 9th | 6:00 PM | Oxford Seniors We meet the second Monday of the month in the conference room at Oxford Seniors. This is a peer support group for family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia.

Our group gives us an opportunity to discuss caregiving challenges and share helpful tips, while receiving support from others in similar situations.

ELF Monday, December 23rd | 5:45 PM Buddy (Will Ferrell) was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa's sack and ended up at the North Pole. Later, as an adult human who happened to be raised by elves, Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan). Hobbs, on Santa's naughty list for being a heartless jerk, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter's relationship with Buddy interferes with his job, he is forced to reevaluate his priorities.

Songbirds

Here it is—Holiday time again. Songbirds will be singing Christmas Carols all over town. This is my 9th carol time with

the Songbirds and originally I thought I’d do one. My how time flies.

We had a great fest at Woodland Manor in October, with our new road book. Even the Mayor showed up to sing, plus Mike and Rosie performed magnificently on the Jitterbug dance floor.

So, come on out and join us at 10:45 every Wednesday morning at the center and have a fun time!

Keep a song in your heart!

Later,

Oxford Seniors will once again be

collecting canned and dried goods to be given to the Bunker Hill Boys Home. Food will be collected through the end of January, 2020. We have held this food drive for several years and the

food donated has always been much appreciated by the recipients.

Help Oxford Seniors give back to the

community!

Light the Fireworks! Oxford Billiards Team Wins Four Straight Against Hamilton

If there ever was a time to take up a collection to order Rossi’s Famous Fireworks and set them a-blazin’, that time would be now.

In a display of billiards marksmanship not seen from the local guys in quite some time, the Oxford Seniors home team put together a string of four straight wins over their Hamilton foes during the period stretching from mid-October to mid-November.

While nibbling on either Loma’s famous banana nut bread or her out-of-this-world cherry cobbler each Thursday afternoon, Oxford won two close contests but romped to easy victories in two

others. Recent results were:

October 24: Behind by four points after the first round, Oxford caught fire and led the rest of the way, winning easily, 311-262.

October 31: On Halloween Day, the Oxford team got all the treats. By winning four of the day’s last six games, the home team overcame a late 2-point deficit to win a squeaker, 276-267.

November 7: Oxford’s win streak stretched to three with another close triumph over Hamilton, 283-273.

November 14: Trailing by eight after the first round, Oxford refueled with a second helping of banana nut bread and “peeled” away from Hamilton with a convincing 307-250 win.

ECOLOGY CLUB How to find out if you can get 100% green electricity at your home in Ohio By Peggy Branstrator, Oxford Seniors Ecology Club

First: Look at a recent electric bill. Notice that the different charges are divided into two catego-ries: delivery or distribution charges and supplier charges. This information is usually on page 2 of the bill.

Second: If you live within the city limits of Oxford you are probably already getting 100% wind-generated electric through the City Aggregation agreement. The city has negotiated 100% wind-generated electricity at very good rates on your behalf. You are automatically enrolled in this plan unless you “opt out” by signing a form. If you are part of this plan the supplier part of your bill will say AEP Energy and the rate will be 005156 (5.156 cents per kilowatt-hour). Your bill will still come from Duke Energy.

Third: If you do not live within the city limits and want to get 100% wind energy go to the web-site listed above to choose an energy supply company that indicates they have 100% green en-ergy. In most cases this will be wind energy although I have not read the entire website, so I don’t really know if there are solar options. Compare the rates and length of the contract. It was common practice in the past to have a penalty for early termination, but I didn’t find any company that is still doing that.

Finally: Call the company of your choice and verify that they operate in your area of the state and sign up with them. You can also sign up on-line. The contract I signed is with AEP Energy (866-258-3782) and the rate is 4.65 cents per kWh for 12 months. It is the best rate I found. Your energy distribution company will not change but the money for your electric supply will now go to the company you chose – to pay for wind turbines not to buy coal! You will still get just one bill.

The distribution company maintains the wires and sends out the bills. This is the number you call if your power goes out. You do not have any choice about who maintains the wires or their charges. That is controlled by the Public Utility Commission of Ohio (PUCO)

The electric supply company is the one you can choose. It may be the same as the distribu-tion company or different. There are many different companies and they operate in differ-ent parts of the state. This website compares them. http://www.energychoice.ohio.gov/ApplesToApplesComparision.aspx?Category=Electric&TerritoryId=4&RateCode=1

Happy Holidays from the Ecology Club Oxford Seniors Ecology Club meets the first Thursday of the month from 3-4:15 pm.

Weather Alert! During the winter months, please check Channels 5, 9 or 12 for closure information. Generally, we will be closed due to weather conditions when

Talawanda schools are closed. If schools are not in session, the decision to close is up to the Executive Director and that information will be shared with

channels 5, 9 and 12. We call individuals who have signed up for meals or rides any day we cancel. If the schools are on a 1 or 2 hour delay, it will not

affect our operation. The center will have normal business hours.

IN OUR THOUGHTS

Caregiver Support Group

The Caregiver Support Group meets twice a month: the second and fourth Thursdays. We meet in the conference room at the Oxford Senior Center at 1:15 pm.

If you want to have lunch at the Senior Center, call Oxford Seniors by 9:00 am to make a lunch reservation. Lunch is served around 12:15 pm. 513-523-8100.

What is a Caregiver Support Group?

• It is a safe haven for sharing true feelings (that won't be shared outside the meeting)

• Every member understands the trials and the joys of caregiving

• A place to make new friends

• Information about resources and coping mechanisms

• Advice on what lies ahead

• Help dealing with family members

If you are a caregiver and want some support, you are invited to attend the second and fourth Thursday of each month. For more information call Patricia Willeke 513.523.3321. Or email at [email protected].
