I know this is after the fact, but the great success of this past July 4th event was appreciated by all members and guests!

I have harped on this in the past, but these things don’t happen automati-cally – the time, effort,

and meticulous attention is orchestrated by a very de-voted and loyal staff. Certainly kudos to our “unpaid” chairman, Pat Scott, but our employee base under-stands what needs to be accomplished and they do this with enthusiasm, excitement and a commitment that their efforts must be of the highest quality. That created our successful day!

As you look at all those that support our club, please recognize this devotion and loyalty to you, our mem-bers. I have asked that name tags be prominently dis-played by our staff so we can individually acknowledge and thank them – many gave up holiday family time to create this wonderful party – how great for all of us.

Our summer events have been well received – this month both the Jewel Tournament and Military Ap-preciation Day highlight our calendar. I hope many of you can participate. The activity with new members has an energy that has rejuvenated us all. Please intro-duce yourself to those you don’t recognize – we want this to be a warm, comfortable environment for all.

Many of you have asked how we have comfortably absorbed all our new members. Yes, we, as a Board and appropriate committees, are again looking at increased casual dining capacity, and outdoor din-ing in the pool area. But this is very important: with almost 90 new social and equity members (and spouses), it will be vERY HELPFUL if we can make dinner reservations if it works in our schedule. That will make our evening and that of the kitchen and staff far more comfortable!

Please note, this Board of Directors wants to make your visit to your Club the most enjoyable part of your day – from a wonderful golf course to excellent food and environment - even to casual nights as ap-propriate. We are listening to you! Watch!

message from the President, andrew e. nelson, ii

imessage from the General manager, michael mooney, CCm

Imagine this. You are hosting a dinner party at your home. You have 50 guests that have communicated an RSvP that they will attend. Food is prepared, linens are set on the required number of place settings, beverages await your guest’s arrival. As the arrival time approaches, guests start arriving, and arriving, and arriving. Nearly 100 people show up, but you only knew of the 50 that had RSvP’d. Sound like a bad dream? This is what our staff experiences when large numbers of members arrive without reservations. At a recent “Burger and Blue Jeans” night, we had 130 reservations, yet at the end of the eve-ning had served 203 people. On July 4th, our biggest event of the year from a head count perspective, numerous parties showed up and staff heard statements like, “We made a reservation for 10, but we have 15 people. Is that a problem?” No it’s not a problem if a few tables need to be changed, but we set up over 120 tables on July 4th and served nearly 1700 people (1622 of which had reservations). Our entire staff prides themselves on providing our members a quality experience every time you visit your club. We realize, and want you to have an attitude of, “This is my Club, I’m a Member.” But please keep in mind; it is also over 1400 other people’s club as well. Help us better serve you by letting us know when you are planning on joining us. We appreciate our Members, and want them to enjoy all aspects that our wonderful club has to offer.

See you at the Club,Mike

Junior Camp Recap

Our annual Junior Golf Camp took

place June 21-24 and was once again a

wonderful week! Golf Professionals

Pete Coe, Kim Falcone, Brian Lewis,

Jerry Hixson and Mark Hoff were

joined by PGA Apprentice & Outside

Services Attendant, David Lau, in provid-

ing instruction for 42 LJCC children and grandchildren. Campers participated

in a variety of activities which exposed them to all aspects of the sport - from

honing their skills in the new short game area to analyzing their full swings on

video. Weekly awards were handed out and each camper departed with a fun tee

prize comprised of a junior cap, hat clip ball marker, golf ball and mini backpack,

all with the La Jolla logo. We were so pleased to have such an enthusiastic group

of junior players who truly enjoyed learning the game. It is exciting to have our

program continue to grow each year and we look forward to another successful

camp in 2012!

Super SeniorsBy: Dr. Jack Riley

On an unseasonably warm sum-

mer morning 49 players took

to the course for the July Super

Seniors event. Coming in first place

was the foursome of Ferd Fletcher,

Skip Ward, Ken Peterson and John

Groebli with a 52.1 and finishing

right behind them with a 52.8 were

larry Hartwig, Barry andrews, Jim marinos and red Scott. Round-

ing out the top three was the foursome of Ted Hollow, art rivkin, Bill

Goreham and Bob allan who finished the day with a 54.5. The Super

Seniors welcomed first time players Barry andrews and Kim Fletcher and

celebrated those members ringing in a birthday this month. There being

no featured speaker, participants enjoyed a delicious buffet, collected their

prizes and left to kick off their weekend plans. Don’t forget, if you are 65

years or older, we invite you to join us for the next Super Seniors tourna-

ment, Friday, August 5th. See you then!

Pete’s PerspectiveI recently celebrated my 65th birthday and

was lucky enough to spend it playing golf

here with Phil mickelson and his caddy Jim

“Bones” Mackay. I thought you might enjoy

some of their comments. Phil appreciates

very much the thanks a number of you have

given him regarding the work he did on the new short game area. It really

means a lot to him. Like many good players, Phil loves fast greens and he

and Bones both remarked many times during the round about how good our

greens are. Bones had never been here before and was so impressed with con-

dition and beauty of the course, we all know that but it’s great to hear it from

people who play the best courses in the world.

Phil is also a member of

a few other private clubs

in the area which gives

him a variety of places

to practice. After a long

stretch of tournament

golf, he thoroughly enjoys

the ability to come here

and play a quiet round

of uninterrupted golf. He feels very confident right know with his game and

is optimistic about his chances at the PGA Championship in Atlanta next

month. Lets hope he finds the magic again!

Home and HomeA creation of President Judy Hall, the first ever Home & Home event, chaired by Joanie Caywood, was a great success! We were teamed with players from Rancho Santa Fe for two days of a best ball com-petition! It’s a little unusual to be playing as a team with ladies that you are used to opposing in other events; a fun concept.

Mary Cave CupThe fund raising tour-nament that honors the volunteer legacy of Mary Cave was played on July 5th. Our generous mem-bers donated over $2200 to keep junior tourna-ments for girls alive in San Diego County. The team of dee Benson, Jill Brown, alice Cavanaugh, and linda Horrell was the winner of this net event. Thank you to Rae and Gladys for organizing, and to all of our members who contributed!

Team Play 2011 ended as a great success for our WGA. The Sea Challenge league is divided into two divisions with the winner of each playing for the overall Championship.

We won our division and accumulated more points than any of the other seven teams in the league. A play-

off against Division II champion, The Crosby Club, was held on July 6th with LJCC coming away only TWO points shy of a victory.

Thank you to everyone who played for and supported Team La Jolla!!

Medal/Ace/PutterThe Ace of the Month tournament was contested on June 28th with roz levenson winning the Eucalyptus Flight, and Cher Conner the Pine Flight. Gaby Sulpizio was the Putter of the Month and marty Pendarvis earned the Most Improved Player award.

Crown Jewel Member GuestChairman Gail nelles and her committee are busy putting the finishing touches on the beautiful Atlantis. They promise a traditional format with many new touches sure to make it a very special tournament. Please use our HotPage for the electronic registration form that will begin your undersea odyssey.

Happy Hackers HappeningsBy: Tommi Adelizzi

Mary Cave Cup Last month the Happy Hackers re-ally participated enthusiastically in the Mary Cave Cup. We not only contributed, but had four groups playing, and provided the Chairmen of the Day: rae merhar and Gladys Bridge. With the WGA we collected around $2,200. We also collected lots of clubs, golf balls, shoes and clothing for Pro

Kids Golf. At the Mary Cave Cup luncheon we celebrated Gladys Bridge’s 90th birthday. Chef Matt presented Gladys with a cake and 90 candles, saying “lighting the candles was not easy”! It truly was a stellar day for Gladys as she led her Happy Hacker team of rae merhar, nora Sargent, and Tommi adelizzi to first place. Megan Mahoney, Director of San Diego Junior Golf, complimented LJCC for contributing over $30,000 to the Mary Cave Cup of Junior Golf during the past 10 years.

We Sailed into Summer with Jody Petersen and mary ann o’Connor at the helm. If you chipped a ball into a bucket, you received a free mulligan. The Chairmen and their spouses didn’t need mulligans. They won their tournament by several strokes! Coming in second were the ingalls and the applebys and third were naomi and ron Kobayashi, Gloria necoechea, and Judi Strada. Jean Campbell had the straightest drive, Gloria necoechea the longest drive, and Craig andrews was closest to the pin.

Gladys Bridge not only had a good day, but a good month. She was Putter of the Month of June. The Ace of the Month for the Gold Flight was Gloria necoechea and Chris andrews was Ace of the Month for the Green Flight. On the back nine the next week mary appleby was the Gold Low Net andJean Campbell was the Green Low

Net. The front nine had Pat Keefe as the Gold Low Net and Jean Campbell (in her new hat) was, again, the Green Low Net. As the course warmed up so did Tommi adelizzi getting the Gold Low Net on the back nine with Chris andrews having the Green Low Net. Our fifth week in June had, who else, but Gladys Bridge getting the Gold Low Net and Jean Campbell (wear-ing her lucky hat) won the Green Low Net on the front nine. Jody Petersen had a birdie on #7. We have two new members to our group, although long-time members of the club: Sally delafield and Judy Courtemanche mayer.

A Reminder for August: The Men’s Jewel is on Thursday, August 11th. We will play on a Tuesday, August 9th with tee times. Please sign up in the Golf Shop. Our last summer Guest Day will be on August 25th. We will have a glit-tering Jewel tournament, “Jewels on the Green.” The Happy Hackers will be the JEWELS so get out your bling!

Through six months of operations in 2011, our Club has generated revenue of $4.6 million and experienced an operating profit of $291,000. This profit is $297,000 favorable to budget.

Additional Equity Members generated through the Club’s Preview Initiative Pro-gram have driven dues revenue ahead of budget by approximately $49,000. Food and beverage revenues exceed budget by $144,000. Social Member dues, which are included in food and beverage revenue, exceed budget by $48,000. Food, beverage and wine sales have exceeded budget due to increased Member banquet activity. However several cancellations of large events in the second half of 2011 keep our projections for the year close to the original budget.

Club expenses are favorable to budget through six months of the year due to slight savings in payroll and benefits. However, our projections indicate additional ex-penses in the second half of the year will offset these savings. Current projections indicate the Club will finish the year with a profit of approximately $260K, largely a result of additional dues revenue.

As of June 30, 2011 the Club has $938K in operating cash and $2.1 million in its capital account. During the first six months of 2011, additions to the capital account were $1.5 million (net of Preview Initiative costs). The Club has received initiation fees from 30 new Equity Members, 5 new Junior Members, 2 transfers from Junior to Equity, 11 transfers from Equity to Social, and 48 new Social Members. The Club spent $427,000 on various capital expenditures, including $258,000 on the new golf course practice area, and $22,000 to replace the Greens Room roof. The remainder of the Clubhouse roof will be replaced in early 2012. The irrigation loan has been paid in full leaving the Club with no outstanding long term debt.

Although the Preview Initiative Program officially ended on March 31, 2011, our Membership Committee is still diligently working to complete the vetting process on several final candidates. Once the vetting process is complete, another $368K of initiation revenue (net of Preview Initiative costs) will be added to our capital account, and assuming no further resignations, our waitlist will be at 18 Members. This funding, net of projected capital replacements through year end, indicates a year end balance in the Capital account of approximately $2.3 million.
