Annual Report 2015-2016
Raising Funds forToday’s Needs Tomorrow’s Dreams
&
Planning for the FutureThe Endowment Fund offers a long-term vision for investing in our children’s education today and for future generations.
Strategic Priority
GOAL SET
$1,000,000
In collaboration with the Orono School District, our Board of Directors identified a strategic goal to fundraise for the Endowment in honor of the Foundation’s fifteenth anniversary. The Board set a target to achieve a $1million fund balance.
Endowment funds, conservatively invested in a diverse portfolio of assets, help buffer market downturns, fluctuations in donor contributions, or decreased state or federal support.
Important Asset
More than a decade ago the Orono Foundation for Education created the Endowment Fund to establish a sustainable revenue stream for the district.
Securing the Future
Surpassing Our Goal
By the end of the 2015-2016 fiscal year, the Orono Foundation for Education raised $202,303 for the Endowment Fund. The Board’s $1 million goal was far surpassed, as we finished the year with an endowment balance of $1,058,306.
GOAL SURPASSED
$1,058,306
Consistent Support Leads to Long-Term Growth and Stability
An endowment fund allows a percentage of the earnings to provide programmatic support. This consistent support allows Orono Schools to count on annual funds to support their long-term vision of providing world-class education to Orono students. The Orono Foundation for Education may use this source of revenue to support on-going programs such as teacher development, math and literacy curriculum enhancements, and character education.
Gala Fund-A-Need
GOAL REACHED
$1,000,000
The 350 guests who attended the gala contributed more than $160,000 for the Endowment Fund, making it the most successful Fund-A-Need in our history. We united as a community and surpassed our target to reach $1 million in contributions to the fund.

Endowment is truly the gift that keeps on giving. While we cannot anticipate what the specific needs of Orono might be in the future, making a gift to the endowment ensures that there will be funds available to meet those needs. - Polly & Bob McCrea
There are seven distinct areas within the Excellence Funds, making it possible to specify where you would like your gifts to be focused:
Provides a consistent, sustainable revenue stream of private funds for generations of Orono students, allowing the District to predictably forecast for more strategic, long-term financial planning. Last year, Orono reached the $1 million milestone for the endowment, which provides constant revenue every year.
Provides flexibility to directly and immediately address the most pressing education priorities and strategic needs of our schools K-12, helping us maintain a tradition of academic quality and distinction that makes Orono a stand-out school district. To date, OFE has granted $6 million to Orono Schools.
Planting the seeds for success
To date, the Orono Foundation has granted over $6,000,000 to Orono Schools.
We support the Annual Fund by donating directly and attending events like the Gala and Great Gatherings. These events are a great way to meet other parents and the proceeds benefit each Orono student. - Wendy and Jeff Dankey

In 2000, The Orono Foundation for Education was formed in response to a decrease in funding for public education. The purpose of the organization is to provide private funding for public education in the Orono School District and to support, sustain and implement
critical programs that otherwise would not have been possible.
Orono Foundation for Education works to empower all students to achieve their highest potential and to ensure a tradition of excellence by harnessing the community’s time,
talent and financial resources in support of Orono Schools.
