Executive Head’s Statement

A warm welcome to the leaders and positive citizens of our next generationAs one of the founders of Raise the Youth Foundation CIC Ltd, I am thrilled to introduce you to our

organisation and I hope this prospectus provides you with an insight into what we do and what we can

and will do for young people from Greater Manchester.

We are a not for profit organisation and we specialise in enabling young people aged 11-25 to re-

engage in learning and gain skills, knowledge, qualifications while developing healthy values and

improving their emotional wellbeing.

I was a reluctant learner with a range of challenges in life and learning. During the five years we have

been supporting young people, I have met a number of young people who are talented and passionate

but their history and current circumstances have affected their confidence and self belief and this has

put a dent in their motivation. My life experience has allowed me to have empathy for the situations

the young people face and the nurturing “family-unit” environment we have created has made a space

where they feel safe, have time to heal and develop, find their talents and be inspired to reach their

potential.

The children attending will receive a personalised education plan as well as a package of support

from an experienced, supportive team who will ensure your children have an enjoyable experience. I

have over 20 years of experience in developing young people and families and the team we provide

brings a wealth of skills and experience – we have skills in youth justice, sports and fitness, creative

arts and media. We have person centred and creative counsellors, qualified teachers, youth workers,

careers guidance staff, musicians all with the experience to meet the needs of young people who have

previously struggled in education. We have a track record of making progress with young people who

have struggled elsewhere.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ‘youth work community’ who have helped myself and

many others who were angry and dissatisfied and had no aspirations. They inspired me to work hard

and believe in the principle of community. They inspired the belief in me that “you can if you think you

can” and that positive things happen when you “apply yourself and take action”. I am proud that the

team here apply these principles in practice and now the young people are inspiring each other to do

the same.

It takes a community to raise a child. We want Raise the Youth to work with you to do the same – to

inspire the community to grow as the young people develop into inspiring citizens.

Thanks

Jason Steele

Investing in our teamWe have staff with excellent values and excellent skills. We invest in

our staff as people and as professionals so we can provide young

people with the best service we can.

Here the team are completing the Pacific Institute Investment in

Excellence programme to enable them to reach high in their own

lives and equip them to deliver programmes that change thinking,

behaviour and motivation.

Excellent staff create excellent young people.

About us We’re a not for profit organisation who want to help young people

and communities grow and develop.

The young people we work withWe work with targeted young people aged 14-25 who need

support with wellbeing, decision making and motivation in

order to achieve qualifications, which in turn will provide a

pathway to a positive adult life.

The teamWe are a range of professionals who can meet the wide

ranging needs of our children. This includes teachers, a

support and development team and trade professionals.

Our philosophyWe want to do education differently – to deliver

education in a way that works for the young people

who attend, so our curriculum and methods are

developed to inspire young people – not force

them down a track that hasn’t worked previously

and probably wouldn’t do again. Our values

shine through – fairness, equality, person

centred approaches, democracy, reaching

high, working hard – we want to develop

good inclusive citizens who make the world

a better place.

People, even more

than things, have

to be restored,

renewed, revived,

reclaimed, and

redeemed; never

throw out anyone.

Each new hour holds

new chances for

new beginnings...

the horizon leans

forward, offering

you space to place

new steps of

change.

The best day of your

life is the one on

which you decide

your life is your

own. You alone are

responsible for the

quality of it.

The greater danger

for most of us lies

not in setting our

aim too high and

falling short; but in

setting our aim too

low, and achieving

our mark.

Change your

thinking and it will

change your life

It takes a

community to raise

a child, to support

the family, to

weather the storms

of life. We are a

community interest

company. Our goal

is to bring people,

partnerships and

industry together to

Raise the Youth.

We provide a personalised, compassionate education environment where young people have time to overcome the challenges they have faced in other educational settings

Experiences in previous education have possibly left them feeling demotivated and with a negative attitude towards learning, so our first priority is to give young people the time to heal and re-engage with education.

Lexia Reading Strategies is a reading skills assessment to ascertain reading levels and

specific areas of strength or development needs.

The program focuses on fundamental literacy skills, starting at first grade skill levels,

with a more mature, age-appropriate interface and a range of content that covers basic phonological

awareness through advanced decoding skills, vocabulary development, and comprehension activities.

Lexia Strategies helps to identify the remedial needs of each student and differentiate the instructional

intensity needed to accelerate reading skills development.

Kudos Inspire is used to match a child’s skills,

abilities and interests with future vocational

options and further education.

How Young People Make ProgressPerson-centred Support – Behaviour

When I went to school I use to get a phone call home nearly every day because of my behaviour, I have only had one at Raise because I'm behaving better because staff respect me, so I respect them and don't want to get in trouble.

Young person aged 12

""

We have a team who

supervise, guide and support

children.

Young people operate in

a token economy where

positive behaviours are

rewarded.

We have some "red lines” to

maintain safe behaviour but

we provide opportunities to

put things right and jump

back onto the journey. We

want parents and partners to

help us in managing both.

It's relationships, not programs, that change children...

Young people thrive when

adults care about them

on a one-to-one level, and

when they have a sense

of belonging to a caring

community.

When another person makes you suffer, it is because he suffers deeply within himself, and his suffering is spilling over. He does not need punishment; he needs help.

Our curriculumThe wellbeing curriculum has been designed to meet the needs of our children and young people and

listening to the views, wishes, feelings and experiences of their parents, carers, and significant others.

It is especially focused upon promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, and physical development of

children and young people, and to ensure they have the necessary skills, knowledge and values to

become a happy, safe, successful, and contributing citizen in modern day Britain.

The programme consists of children learning the following subjects:

nSocial skills for work, leisure, and life.

nUnderstanding drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and substance misuse.

nUnderstanding sex education and relationships.

nEmotional intelligence – thinking and behaviour.

nUnderstanding citizenship, community and country, rights and responsibilities, and global citizen.

nTackling issues – yourself, family, conflict, and anti-social behaviour.

nMindfulness – coping with stress and anxiety

Supporting intervention and partnership As part of the wellbeing offer children and young

people will be assessed, observed, and their behaviour

will be monitored and, where required, interventions

will be implemented by Raise to enable them and

significant others to improve their behaviour and

wellbeing.

Where more acute and complex behaviours / issues

arise, Raise will work with children and their carers, and

signpost and complete referrals to statutory agencies

such as early help teams, substance misuse organisations, social care, criminal justice, and health

departments etc.

All children and young people can access this comprehensive wellbeing curriculum and ensure they

have the knowledge and confidence to gain qualifications.

Welfare fund We have a welfare fund to help young people with crucial sticking points. This helps families to cope

with ‘down’ times. Our welfare fund policy can be found on our website:

We keep our children safe by recruiting appropriate staff and training and supervising their progress. We work with parents, young people and local agencies. If there are any safeguarding concerns around your young person or you can think of ways in which we could up level our service then we are always happy to respond.

30 www.raisetheyouth.co.uk raisetheyouth 01204 431946

Page 31: Raise the Youth Prospectus 2016

School Safeguarding PolicyWe believe the safety of young people is paramount. Everyone

contributes to the safety of young people. Staff observe and

speak to young people, parents and other organisations so they

can identify concerns early, provide help a prevent problems and

difficulties escalating. Like any school we work with partners to

keep young people safe and we follow guidelines set by statutory

guidance Working Together to Safeguard Children 2015. This

means we work with social care, health services and the police to

promote welfare and prevent and protect young people from harm.

Behaviour and Sanctions PolicyWe have a “respect steps” policy. This is a 4 step process to deal with

behavioural issues restoratively and ensure issues are challenged but

resolved in a way that is fair to all parties. This process promotes good

communication and personal responsibility. Young people’s views are heard

and they are given the opportunity to resolve any issues and get back on track.

Complaints PolicyWe value the views of others and if parents or partners are not happy we want to know how

to make things better. Our complaints policy clearly states what the process is and how long it will

take. Our aim is to resolve any problems and improve communication and secure a fair outcome.

Anti – Bullying policyWe feel that bullying is not only harmful to those involved, but also develops negative patterns of behaviour for

the future. Bullying is anti-social behaviour and will not be tolerated without intervention. Our anti-bullying policy

clearly shows how we respond to the issue and it links closely to our behaviour policy, internet access policy and

safeguarding policy.

Life at Raise the Youth

JBJB is 16 years old and joined Raise the

Youth at 14 after struggling in all other

forms of education.

JB is one of our Raise peer mentors and

a young person to whom many of our

young people look up to after seeing his

success and growth within Raise.

“I would recommend Raise to all young

people, if I am capable of gaining

qualifications anyone can do it.”

JB attends Raise full time so experiences

a full week’s timetable.

“It’s so much more than a school, I used

to finish school and have nothing to do

and be bored, with Raise we do loads

during school and after. We recently just

went to watch Manchester United play

as a reward for our good behaviour!”

JB is in year 11 and currently completing

his qualifications as he wants to gain

an apprenticeship as a youth worker for

Raise.

LMLM is 12 years old and attends

Raise the Youth full time.

He was within mainstream

education but his behaviour

became a concern for

teachers and felt he was

causing too much disruption

to other students.

During his time at Raise LM

has taken a real shine to

the drums within the Raise

studio:

“They tried to teach me the

drums in school, but I found

it really hard, the teachers

weren’t patient with me and

stopped teaching me. When

I came to Raise, they taught

me step by step, didn’t give

up on me and now I can play

3 different sets.”

When we caught up with LM

over lunch he shared:

“The meals at school were

horrible, always the same

thing, sometimes I didn’t

even bother going to lunch.

Here at Raise the food is

delicious, homely food,

always cooked fresh and

today I have something

Spanish but tomorrow

we will have something

completely different like

Italian!”

Raise care and support me not only in my education but my whole life.

Life at Raise the Youth

I've been at Raise for three years and they've helped me loads with bad situations. I've gained loads of qualifications and met a load of people who are nice and funny.

(DM aged 15)

I come to Raise every Thursday and Friday. I always feel welcome and I treat the staff and pupils like family.

(AP aged 15)

Raise has helped me over the last two years and supported me through life's difficulties. When I was in a children's home they contacted me and tried their

best to open my eyes and to make me see life in a more mature way. They helped me to gain strength and sort my head out. I came out a better person and now I'm back in school and I come every day. Raise is the best school I've been to.

(BB age 15)

I've only been at Raise a short time. Everybody seem really nice and are really close. I've met new friends and feel welcome.
