5.1 Wookey

Wookey is a village and civil parish 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Wells, on the River Axe in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. It is perhaps best known today for the nearby Wookey Hole Caves. The parish includes the village of Henton and the nearby hamlets of Yarley and Bleadney where the River Axe, travels the length of the village. There used to be a port at Bleadney on the river in the 8th century which allowed goods to be brought to within 3 miles (5 km) of Wells.

The name Wookey is thought to come from the Old English wocig, meaning an animal trap. An alternative explanation has been offered which suggests it comes from the Celtic word ogof meaning cave.

The now-closed Wookey Station, once lying on Cheddar Valley line branch of the Bristol and Exeter Railway, is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The village included a manor house built by Bishop Jocelin of Wells in the 13th century. It was rebuilt in the sixteenth century and is now a farmhouse and Grade II* listed building.

The population in 1821 was 1,040, comprising 223 families, of which 147 were employed in agriculture.

For further reading on Wookey, a parish that once extended from the top of the Mendip hills and down the valley of the Axe, refer to the comprehensive "The Parish of Wookey :a New History" by Hasler and Luker published by Wookey Local History Group 1997. This hard back, 300page volume with many maps and photographs, together with appendices on population, place names (to up date you on the real meaning of Wookey), etc is now out of print but may be obtained via the public lending system or read in the libraries of the British Museum, Cambridge, Oxford, Dublin, Edinburgh Universities. B G Luker PS the port at Bleadney was not on the Axe but on the river that formerly ran past Glastonbury north west across the levels and through the Bleadney gap to join the Axe. This river now flows west from Glastonbury as the Brue and remains at Bleadney only as the last end of the Wookey mill stream, known erroneously as the Lower River Axe - it is not a river, it is not lower and it is not the Axe!

St Matthew's church dates from the twelfth century and is a Grade I listed building. It was granted to the dean of Wells by Bishop Robert, rebuilt by Bishop Reginald and assigned to the sub dean of the cathedral in 1209. The south chancel is thought to have been built to house the memorial to Thomas Clerke in 1556.Beside the church stands the 19th-century Mellifont Abbey,[8] which is named after the abbey of the same name in Ireland.

5.2 Pilton

Pilton is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated on the A361 road in the Mendip district, 3 miles (5 km) south-west of Shepton Mallet and 6 miles (10 km) east of Glastonbury. The village has a population of 1,030 (2002 estimate).[1] The parish includes the hamlets of Beardly Batch and Cannards Grave.

Pilton is now almost 20 miles (32 km) from the sea but sits on the edge of the Somerset Levels, an area which has now been drained but was once a shallow tidal lake. In Saxon times Pilton, then known as Pooltown, was a harbour and according to legend it is where Joseph of Arimathea landed in Britain in the 1st century.

Pilton is famous as the location of the Glastonbury Festival, which is run by Pilton farmer Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily. Being the village at which the festival is held, all villagers get a free ticket.

The present Norman and Medieval village church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, may stand on the site of an earlier wattle and daub church built by the early missionaries. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.

5.4 Cheddar

Cheddar is a large village and civil parish in the district of Sedgemoor in the English county of Somerset. It is situated on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Wells.

Cheddar Gorge is the largest gorge in the United Kingdom and includes several show caves. It has been the setting for a major centre of human settlement since Neolithic times, including a Saxon palace. It also provides a unique geological and biological environment which has been recognised by the designation of several Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

The village gave its name to Cheddar cheese and has also been a major centre for Strawberry growing. It is now a major tourist destination and large village with several cultural and community facilities.

There is evidence of occupation from both the Neolithic and Roman periods in Cheddar.[1] There is some evidence of a Bronze Age field system at the Batts Combe quarry site.[2] The remains of a Roman villa have been excavated in the grounds of the current vicarage.[3]

In the 10th century the Witenagemot met three times at the Saxon palace in Cheddar.[4][5] The ruins of the palace were excavated in the 1960s and are located in the grounds of The Kings of Wessex School, together with a 14th-century chapel dedicated to St Columbanus.[6] Roman remains have also been uncovered at the site.[7]

Cheddar was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Ceder, meaning 'Shear Water' from the Old English scear and Celtic dwr.[8] An alternative possible meaning is from Ceodre or ceod meaning a pouch referring to the caves or gorge.[9]

William Wilberforce saw the poor conditions of the locals when he visited Cheddar in 1789. He inspired Hannah More in her work to improve the conditions of the Mendip miners and agricultural workers.

In 1801 4,400 acres (18 km2) of common land were enclosed under the Inclosure Acts.

The Church of St Andrew dates from the 14th century. It was restored in 1873 by William Butterfield. It is a Grade I listed building and contains some 15th-century stained glass and an altar table of 1631. The chest tomb in the chancel is believed to be to Sir Thomas Cheddar and is dated 1442.The tower, which rises to 100 feet (30 m), contains a bell dating from 1759 and made by Thomas Bilbie of the Bilbie family.

There are also churches for Roman Catholic, Methodist, Baptist and other denominations, including a community Church which meets at the Kings of Wessex, senior school.

5.6 Holcombe

Holcombe is a small village and civil parish (estimated population 1,000) in North Somerset, England. The parishs contains the hamlet of Barlake and Edford. It is within easy commuting distance of both Bristol and Bath.

Its place name is derived from the Old English Hol, meaning deep or hollow and cumb meaning valley.

The original medieval village was buried at the time of the plague and the old parish church, which survives, is surrounded by the mounds that bear testimony to this burial. It is suggested that the rhyme 'Ring a Ring o' Roses' began there as a result. The village has two pubs: The Duke of Cumberland, which can be found at the bottom of the village's hill and the Holcombe Inn, which recently changed its name from The Ring O' Roses to its original 1960s name.[3] It was named the Ring O' Roses as a reminder of the plague that previously destroyed the village. The Ring O' Roses is known locally as the Guns 'n' Roses following an infamous incident during the late 1980s involving the (then) landlord and a shotgun.

Holcombe also has a post office and four churches, two of which are in use.

Holcombe was the site of several mines on the Somerset coalfield; however these are all now closed.

Holcombe quarry - although no longer in use, dangerous, boarded off and the place of many an accident - remains a popular swimming destination during the summer months for the young local adventurer.

Within the village there is a large house known as Holcombe Manor which is now separated into flats.

St Andrew which has late Saxon-early Norman origins and was rebuilt in the 16th century.

5.7 Stoke St. Michael (Stoke Lane)

Stoke St Michael is a village and civil parish on the Mendip Hills 4 miles (6.4 km) north east of Shepton Mallet, and 8 miles (12.9 km) west of Frome, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England.

Since the 14th century the village has also been known as Stoke Lane, although the origin of the alternative name is unclear, but may be connected to Johhn de Lison who gave lands in the village to Glastonbury Abbey in 1253.

The village became a centre for cloth manufacture with fulling mills being established on the River Frome to the north of the village. Henry Fussell established paper mills in 1803, and his family, who came from the village, including James Fussell established their iron works and edge-tool business in Mells.

The Knatchbull arms was built in the late 17th century, and is named after the Knatchbulls of Babington who held the manor in the late 18th century.

The manor house on Tower Hill, which was previously known as the old vicarage, was built around 1700.

The Church of St Michael has a western tower of c. 1400, the remainder being built in 1838 by Jesse Gane. It is a Grade II* listed building. The church was a chapelry of Doulting.

5.8 West Cranmore

Cranmore is a village and civil parish east of Shepton Mallet, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the hamlets of Waterlip, East Cranmore and Dean where Dean farmhouse dates from the 17th century, as does the old smithy which has now been converted into two residential dwellings.

The name comes from Crane Mere, the Lake of the Cranes.

It is the base of the East Somerset Railway which plays host to a variety of preserved diesel and steam locomotives. It operates the line between Cranmore railway station, Cranmore West, Merryfield Lane Halt and Mendip Vale. The section between Cranmore and the mainline is used for heavy quarry traffic to the nearby Merehead Quarry. The quarry, which is also known as Torr Works, covers an area of some 200 hectares, including 60 hectares which have been landscaped to blend with the surrounding countryside. It is operated by the Foster Yeoman Company employing over 200 people and produces 6 million tonnes of limestone annually which is carried directly from the quarry by Mendip Rail.

Cranmore Hall is a large 17th-century country house with landscaped gardens which now forms the main portion of All Hallows Preparatory School. Southill House is a smaller country house dating from the early 18th century which was refacaded by John Wood, the Younger.

On a hill north of the village is the 45 metres (148 ft) tall Victorian folly, Cranmore Tower, built in 1862–64 by Thomas Henry Wyatt for John Moore Paget. The site is 280 metres (919 ft) above sea level, and is the highest point on the Mendip Way.

The Church of St Bartholomew dates from the 15th century and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building. The former church of St James in East Cranmore has been deconsecrated and is now used as a private dwelling.

5.10 Downhead

Downhead is a village and civil parish close to Leigh-on-Mendip and 5 miles (8 km) north east of Shepton Mallet, in the Mendip district of Somerset, England. The parish includes the medieval settlement of Tadhill.

The village was recorded as Dunehevede, meaning the top of the down, in 1196. The manor was given to Glastonbury Abbey by King Ethelwulf, but by 1066 was held under the abbey by Erneis. By the early 18th century the estate was held by the Portmans of Orchard Portman.

Downhead Basalt Quarry to the west of the village, opened before 1904 and ceased Basalt mining in 1925. It was serviced by a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway.

All Saints church is a Grade II* listed building with a 14th-century tower and 18th-century nave and chancel. The church tower contains three bells cast in 1782 by William Bilbie of Chew Stoke. In 2007 funding from the levy on nearby quarries was obtained to pay for repair and restoration work on the bells by Matthew Higby.

5.31 P.R.O. Complaint - P.R.O. ref: C2/H.32/20.James I/C.13391

Complaint and Petition re: Phillip Raynes dec'd. and Arundel Raynes Dated 24th November 1620 Ellis Swayne to the Lord Chancellor Vicesimo quarto die Novembris 1620 To the Right Honorable Francis Ld. Verulam, Lord Chancellor of England. In Most Humble Manner complayninge showeth unto my good lord your lordship's poore distressed orator Thomas Holl of West Crenmore in the county of Somerset. Your said orator aforesaid the month of Aprill in the fifth yeare (1608) of the raigne of our soveraigne lord James nowe king over us by this bond bill or writtinge obligatory beeame bound to one Phillip Raynes of Lamyatt in the said county of Somersett yoeman deceased in the penall some of six pounds of current English money for the payment of three pounds or theaforth of licke current money att some tyme after. And that wheras your orator att the tyme appointed for payment or not longe after paid to the said Phillip Raynes deceased or to one Arrundell Raynes sonne of the said Phillip Raynes by the appointment and in the liffe tyme of the said Phillip Raynes deceased the said some of three pounds or thereabouts. And the said Phillip Raynes then acknowledged these thereof and then promised to deliver to your said orator the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory. Butt soe yt is Right Honourabel that not longe after your said orator paid the said three pounds to the said Phillip Raynes or to the said Arundell Rayneshis sonne by the appoyntment of the said Phillip Raynes his father and before your said orator demanded delivery of the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory the said Phillip Raynes dyed after whose death the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory togeather whether the goods and chattells of the said Phillip Raynes deceased came to the hands or possession of the said Arrundell Raynes and of one Phillip Raynes sonne of the said Phillip Raynes deceased as executors of the last will and testement of the said [Phillip] Raynes their father since whose death the said Arundell Raynes and Phillip Raynes the sonne or one of them have most wrongfully joyned combyned and complotted with one John Barton of West Crenmore aforesaid yoeman knowinge the said Barton to be now well wisher of your said orator. And for some consideration or otherwise to them the said Arrundell Raynes and Phillip Raynes the sonne or to one of them geven by the said John Barton they the said Arrundell Raynes and Phillip Raynes the sonne or one or boath of them with an intent to wrong and kepe your said orators hand assignes over by letter of attorney or otherwise the said bill bond or writtinge obligatory to the said John Bartonto the intent the said Barton should seek extremity on the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory against your said orator to the better undoeing of your said orator notwith standing the said Arundel Raynes knowe the payment of the said three pounds or the greater parte thereof by your said orator to the said Phillip Raynes the father or to the said Arrundell by his said fathers appoyntment. And lickwise hird his said father acknowledge the receipt thereof and hird his said father in his liffe tyme promise to deliver upp the said bond to your said orator yett not withstandinge the said John Barton who hath the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory assigned to him by letter of attorney from the said Arrundell Raynes and Phillip Raynes the sonne or from one of them geveth forth in speches that he will hand the whole forfeyture of the said bond bill or writtinge obligatory againe although your orator have paid and dischrged the same longe since. And whereas your said orator aboute six or seaven yeares nowe past sent and delivered unto the said Arundell Raynes and att his instance and request one Ope(?) for the prise of five pounds which said some of fyve pounds the said Arrundell Raynes then faithfully promise to pay to your said orator within a short space of then after and nowe long thence past or else when your orator would require and demande the same of him the said Arrundell Raynes of which bargaine and security for the said fyve pounds your orator was then the lesse carefull for that your orator not longe before had bene in diverse business beholdinge to the said Arrundell Raynes therefore your said orator did trust him the said Arrundell Raynes soe .... that he nether tooke any speciality for security of him the said Arrundell Raynes for the said some of fyve pounds nor provided any witnesses to be

present to testifie the same bargaine and contracte betwext your said orator and the said Arrundell Raynes but only privately betwext themselves contracted the same. And your said orator lickwise privately delivered the said ope to the said Arrundell Raynes uppon the rpyvate promise of the said Arrundell Raynes for the payment of the said fyve pounds as aforesaid. And the said Arrundell Raynes receaved the said Ope of your said orator and converted the same to his own use and benifitt forasmuch as your said orator have satisfied the said debt of three pounds and was promised by the 'predicto' Phillip Raynes the father the hand to the said bond of six pounds delivered upp unto him as aforsaid and yet the said bond is deteyned your said orator threatened and in continuall peril and dread to be arrested and molested through the combynagon and confederacy of the said Arrundell Raynes and the said John Barton for the penall some of the said bond and yf your said orator cannott make any legal plea or defence therunto by the comonlaw and for as much as the contracte for the said Ope behodene your said orator and the said Arrundell Raynes was in private and cannott be soe precisely proved as the stricte course of the comon lawe doth require to mayneteyne and accon on the said contracte and is therefor remedilesse unless hee may be redeemed by the equityof this honourable courte may yt therefore please your good lordship the promises contrived to graunte unto your poore orator the kings majestie most gratious write of subpeona to be directed unto the said Arrundell Raynes and John Barton comandinge them and eny and either of them att certeyne day and under a certeyne payne therof to be limitted to be personally to appeare before your good lordship and respectively to answeare all the premisses and eny particular therof. And further to stand so amd abide such order and direccons in the premisses as your lordship shall thinke to be most meett and convenient. And your orator shall as dewty bindeth. pray for your lordship in honour and happiness long continue.

William's parentage is not known but it seems likely that his ancestor may be John Raines of Foxcote (2.0) who had two sons, John and William and the latter also sons of the same name. In any case the same Christian names occur in both the Foxcote and Leigh-on-Mendip families to suggest a relationship. Certainly William of Leigh married Gilliam Webb there on October 22nd. 1582 and had six children namely (not necessarily in order):- 1. John 1583- d. before 1630 2. Francis 1534 3. William -1615 4. Hugh 5. Philip 1593-1637 6. Anne who was bartised at Leigh on June 20th. 1595 and married there George Samson on April 10th. 1618 and had four children (George, William, Thomas and Ann) named in her father's will. William certainly had one sister, Edith Hooper, named in his will, and possibly a brother John (5.0),He was leaseholder of property in Leigh-on-Mendip and Frome, as the above will shows.Gillian died either in 1606 or 1622 and was certainly buried at Leigh churoh, William himself died in 1630 and was buried on September 30th. 5.51 Notes on the Pedigree of Raines of Wookey.

5.51.1 James Reins

Married Hester Hardwitch, spinster at Wells Cathedral on August the 15th 1703. They are described as "of this parish" and "both of Pamborough". James next appears in the Westbury poor rate of 1729 and is assessed at 1/-3d, and again pays the same rate in 1730 and 1734 (s.r.o. ref.: Poor Books, D/P/Wby 13/2/2). He again appears in 1740 and is assessed at 7½d. This is the same rate paid by Alice Hardwitch in 1729. The poor books at Westbury have been searched thoroughly for a clue to the parentage of James who married in 1703. The S.R.O. refs. are d/p/wby 13/2/1 and start 1678; 4/1/1/ reveals an Alice Hardwick in 1714,1718, and early 1729, possibly related to the Hester Hardwich who married James(above) in 1703. James appears again in 1745, 1746, but not 1748. Alice Hardwick died in 1729 aged 71 years and was buried at Westbury on the 3rd of June. The baptismal registers for Westbury reveal that she was baptised 7th March 1658, the daughter of Robert Hardwitch. Maybe she was a spinster aunt of Hester who married James in 1703. His will dated 10th December 1732 (S.R.O. ref.: DD/X SR3 C/400 p.130 abstract only) was proved on 22nd April 1758 at the Dean's Court in Wells. He describes himself as "James Rains of Westbury in the county of Somerset, carpenter". He leaves his working tools to his son James, mentions his granddaughter Mary, and leaves his land called Pinkersham to his son William. The will was witnessed by William Beadle, Richard Ball, and William Lane. James was buried on the 5th of December 1735 at Westbury.

5.51.2 Hester Hardwitch

Married James Reins above in 1703. She had four children, namely, James, Mary, Joseph, and John, and possibly was the mother of William who may have been the first born. She is described as being "of Pamborough" at the time of her marriage, and the registers of Wedmore reveal that a Leonard Harditch was living there at this time. It is unlikely that he was her father, and more probable that he was her uncle. Hester was buried at Westbury on the 2nd of July 1712 after the birth of her last child John. There were many Hardwitch's in Westbury at this time and some in Wookey also.

5.51.3 William Raynes

The son of James is first mentioned in his father's will of 1732 and is left the lease of ground called Pinkersham. He married Anne Stone on the 29th of July 1722 at St. Cuthbert's Wells, and both are described as being of Stoke Lane. He was therefore born c. 1700, and so Hester Hardwitch may not be his mother, or he was born out of wedlock. He was buried on the 21st of July 1762 at Westbury, and no other issue from him is known, other than a possible daughter, Mary mentioned in the will of James in 1732.

5.51.4 James Raines

The son of James, was baptised on the 3rd of April 1704 at Wedmore. He first appears in the baptismal records of Wells, St. Cuthbert's, when his son William was "baptised privately," in the High street, Wells, on the 3rd of March 1727, the same day William was born. James married Mary Magor on the 12th January 1730 at Wedmore, and by her had a son James baptised 1st April 1733, a daughter Hester who was buried 16th December 1736, and a daughter Mary, baptised 28th April 1735 at Wells, St. Cuthbert's. James is described as being of Easton. James's wife Mary was buried 25th November 1736 at Westbury, and his daughter Mary died 16th December 1736 also at Westbury.

She married James Raines in the 12th of January 1730 at St. Cuthbert's Wells. She had three children by James, namely James baptised 1st April 1733, Hester who died 16th December 1736, and Mary baptised 28th April 1735 and was buried 16th December 1736, all at St. Cuthbert's Wells. James, the father, is described as being of Easton, which is located in the out parish of St. Cuthbert's Wells lying on the Westbury side. Mar was buried at Westbury on the 25th November 1736.

By her James had a daughter Hester baptised in 1761 at Cheddar, a daughter Hannah in 1763 also baptised at Cheddar and a son Isaac in 1766 at Easton, who died in 1766. James is listed in the land tax assessments for Easton Tylking (s.r.o. ref.: d/p/w.st. c./ 2/1/2) 1766 Mr James Raines and Mr John Phelps 10/6d 1767 Mr James Raines and Mr John Phelps 7/10½d 1783 Mr Robert Michel Esq. for part of Rayneses 1/1d
