This challenge pack is split into 4 sections

To achieve the challenge badge you must do at least two activities from each section but if you are having a party or a sleepover you may manage to do more.

There is also a section for Leaders who would like to hold a sleepover, giving you lots of advice, hints and tips.

Get inspiredIf you’re looking for ideas and tips for some under-the-sea fun with your unit check out our Pinterest Board at www.pinterest.com/GirlguidingScot/mermaid-mayhem

Visit the beach and collect some shells and stones. You could travel by train or bus and take a picnic to make it more of an adventure.

Make sea creatures using the shells and smooth stones you find on the beach.

Just paint and add googly eyes. For more inspiration and tips check out our Pinterest board.

Visit a Sea Life Centre at St Andrews, Oban, Loch Lomond, Macduff, Deep Sea World at

South Queensferry or another local aquarium or museum where your unit can learn about

the ocean.

Complete an ocean-themed word search. Make up your own or check out the examples

on our Pinterest board.

Watch an under-the-sea-themed film. You must check that the film you intend to play is

covered by our licence - otherwise you are breaking copyright law. Email [email protected]

to check your specific film is covered, as the list changes constantly.

Make an ocean in a bottle, add some foam fish shapes, glitter, water and blue food

colouring, shake the bottle and watch the ocean come alive! For inspiration and tips check

out our Pinterest board.

Play a game of ocean bingo. Make up your own or check out the examples on

our Pinterest board.

Have a treasure hunt with picture clues or hunt for gold coins.

All the ideas below can be made in unit meetings or used to decorate your party or sleepover venue. You can find examples, tips and inspiration for all these activities on our Mermaid Mayhem Pinterest board.

Make a mermaid, pirate or octopus using the middle of a toilet roll

Make a pirate hat. You can find instructions and templates on our Pinterest board

Make a fish using a CD and shiny stickers, add some fins, a tail and a googly eye

Make a jellyfish sun catcher using a black paper outline, fill it in with coloured tissue paper

and add some ribbons for tentacles

Make a turtle from a card template and use strips of coloured card to make the shell

Make and ice some fishy cupcakes using coloured icing and Smarties or add a sea creature

using jelly sweets

Try making an edible crab from a croissant.

Make some clam shell cookies, pipe some blue icing between 2 Viennese biscuits

and add a pearl

5

Make and play a magnetic fish game. If you don’t have magnets you could decorate plastic

cups and add loops to the top that you can hook your ‘fish’.

Play pin the patch on the pirate, the tail on the whale or the mermaid.

Play walk the plank. Create the outline of a plank with chalk. Players close their eyes and

then walk inside the lines. See who can walk the plank without falling into the sea.

Try this aquatic twist on the classic game of fruit salad! Here’s how you play:

1. Form a circle of chairs, with one chair less than the total number of players

2. Choose a player to be ‘in’; that player stands in the centre of the circle

3. Divide all players into three groups of sea creatures by going around the circle and naming them – how about dolphin, fish or turtle

4. The player who is ‘in’, calls the name of a group eg “dolphins”

5. All dolphins must get up quickly and change places

6. Players who are not dolphins remain seated

7. The person who is ‘in’ tries to sit in an empty spot when players swap positions

8. If they manage to sit in a chair, the player not sitting in a chair is then ‘in’

9. The person in the middle can also call ‘in the ocean’ and all groups have to change spots.

10. The game can finish whenever you like.

Get a beach ball and play some beach ball games.

Individually or as a relay team complete 5 of the following -

30 Star jumps.

Spin a hula hoop 30 times

Skip 30 times, with or without a skipping rope

Throw a bean bag in to a bucket or hula hoop 30 times

Have a race, hopping 30 times to the other end of the room

With a partner throw and catch a beach ball 30 times

Throw the beach ball out from the middle of the circle to a different person each time until you have counted to 30

Make and try some edible sand using crushed digestives biscuits and

demerara sugar, add some jelly shapes to make a beach scene before

tasting the sand!

Make some funny pirate face pizzas using pitta bread. Let the girls

add their own toppings.

6

Try some fun water experiments as a group. Do at least two of the following:

Dancing raisins - pour some soda water in a clear container, add some raisins and watch

them dance.

Skittle experiment - make a circle of skittles on a plate, add some warm water and watch a

rainbow appear.

Sink or float - collect a variety of items and see which sink or float in water. Try an orange

with and without the peel and be surprised by what happens.

Rain clouds - fill a clear container with water and add lot of shaving foam on top. Use a

dropper to drop food colouring on top of the shaving foam and watch the coloured rain fall.

Make a mermaid xylophone using glass containers and water, fill them to different levels,

add some food colouring and play a tune.

Throw a themed party! Beach, pirate, mermaid or under the sea - let the girls pick their

favourite theme.

Set up a photo booth using mermaid and pirate props, send a picture of your unit having

fun and it will be included in a photo book celebrating 30 years of Rainbows.

Email your photos to [email protected]

Swap friendship bracelets with a under the sea theme with another unit, take it further by

swapping with a unit in another District or Division. Try adding a pearl or a mermaid charm.

Read ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister then decorate your own Rainbow Fish -

remember to add the shiny scales! Do this at a sleepover or party using a large template and

get each girl to decorate and add a scale.

Cover a box as a treasure chest and fill with chocolate coins and beads.

Make a large clam shell from card, paint it pink and add some glitter and pearls. You could

have the girls write a message inside and give it to a friend or family member.

Hang a cotton fishing net (available from party suppliers), on the wall and add some of the

craft sea creatures you have made.

WHAT? A special Rainbow sleepover as part of Mermaid Mayhem to celebrate 30 years of fun!

WHEN? You can hold your sleepover anytime throughout 2017 to celebrate the Rainbows 30th birthday.

WHERE? It’s up to you! Where would your Rainbows like to go?

Here are a few important points to remember:

✩ Maintain adult to child ratios of 1:4 (not including the Event Coordinator) with a

maximum of 30 Rainbows. There must be at least three adults present at all times.

✩ Rainbow overnight events must not exceed 24 hours, this includes the whole time

Leaders are responsible for the girls, including any travel time.

✩ Rainbows must not travel abroad for overnight events.

✩ Rainbows may attend a sleepover with other sections provided the total number

of Rainbows does not exceed 30.

✩ All of the adults present should be known to the Rainbows, and all Rainbows must

be accompanied by a Leader from their own unit.

✩ If the licence holder is not a Rainbow Leader, a Rainbow Leader should be involved

in planning and be present at the event.

✩ The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recommends that no child under

the age of six sleeps in the top bunk. Seek parental permission if younger girls will

need to sleep in top bunks.

✩ The venue should be close enough for a parent to collect their child

should the need arise.

Some tips for a Rainbow Sleepover!

So you’re going to have a sleepover! What do you need to know?

You can find everything you need to know about holding over-night events for your unit here https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/making-guiding-happen/running-your-unit/events-and-going-away/going-on-residentials/

8

Do you need a Going Away with…Qualification? You need to complete Modules 1-4 of the Going Away with… Scheme. You can complete the modules when you plan and run your sleepover. Speak to your local commissioner first and they will appoint a mentor for you.

Alternatively, anyone with Modules 1-4 can be the Licence Holder for your sleepover – they don’t need to be a Rainbow Leader. A Rainbow Leader must be part of the planning team, and be present at the sleepover.

PaperworkEvent notification: Download and complete the Residential Event Notification Form. The instructions on the form will help you follow the correct process for informing the relevant people about your event.

Informing parents and carers: You must gain permission from parents using the Information and Consent form.

Health information: Parents of under 16s and participants over 16 must complete a Health Information Form.

You should provide a kit list for the girls.

Your teamEvent coordinator – this person leads on planning the event, including appointing someone to be responsible for catering, health and first aid.

First aider – this person must have attended a suitable and valid first aid course such as 1st Response or a professional similar or higher level course. There must be at least one other adult present with first aid knowledge.

Caterer – this person is responsible for supplying food and equipment and all food hygiene. Anyone over 18 who is familiar with food hygiene requirements can be a caterer.

Emergency home contact – this should be someone who is not related to any of the participants, for example your District Commissioner or another Leader.

You must also make sure:

• You have enough adults in your team to maintain section ratios

• All volunteers aged 18 or over who are staying overnight have completed the recruitment

check process

• All non-member volunteers who are not already members of Girlguiding (such as parent

helpers) are assigned the role of Residential Occasional Helper on Go! and will need to register

with the PVG scheme

• Young Leaders are supervised at all times by adult volunteers, as they are not included in ratios

• You take any families and children of volunteers at residential events into account when

considering ratios

Where will you go?Ask the Rainbows for ideas! A hall, a museum, a sea life centre?

When considering a venue, make sure the local Outdoor Activity Adviser has approved it and that it meets your unit’s needs.
