FROM THE RHS ART DEPARTMENT

Congratulations to Sarah Rosenberg, Grace Choi, Anne Chen, and Kirsten MacCormick for their participation in helping to design the promotional materials for this year’s Radnor Educational Foundation Gala, “We’re On a Roll”. Each of these talented RHS artists submitted original designs that were considered by REF committee members for items ranging from the front and rear covers of the gala invitation to tickets and even cake decoration. Kudos to Sarah and Grace for having their artwork chosen for the invitation and also Anne and Kirsten whose work was chosen for the tickets and cake respectively. 2 To celebrate this event, the art departments in all the Radnor schools will host an exhibit of student work in the lobby of Radnor High School. The display will feature the work of students in elementary through high school. It’s a popular show as students, staff and the community, have an opportunity to view the charming work of kindergarteners alongside the extraordinary work of high school artists. We invite you to see this show that will be on display from Thursday, March 3rd until Thursday, March 31st. A reception will be held for student artists, their families and friends on Thursday, March 17th from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. Join us for this fun and artistic event!

HEALTH OFFICE

Maureen Lerario, RN, CSN Get to Know Your Rashes Whether a rash itches or not is often an important clue to knowing what kind of rash you have. The following are common itchy rashes. Follow up with your dermatologist for a formal diagnosis and treatment plan. 1. Psoriasis Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that is caused by changes in certain immune system cells that make them "fight" normal skin. Psoriasis produces thick, silvery scales on a red base that has a distinct border. It's commonly found on the knees, elbows, and scalp. 2. Pityriasis Rosea Pityriasis rosea is a common rash that has a striking appearance. It starts with a "herald patch" -- a single, round/oval lesion that often occurs on the trunk. The rash then spreads along skin lines on the trunk. The rash is very itchy and lasts for 6 to 8 weeks. 3. Poison Ivy Poison ivy, or rhus dermatitis, is caused by exposure to a resin called urushiol found on certain plants of the Rhus genus. These plants include poison ivy, oak, and sumac. This well-known rash starts out with blisters and redness on the exposed areas that spread on contact with the blisters. Poison ivy and other forms of irritant contact dermatitis are treated with topical steroids. 4. Chicken Pox Chicken pox is a very itchy rash caused by the varicella virus. Since the development of a chicken pox vaccine, we don't see as much chicken pox in the United States compared to twenty years ago. Pregnant women with chicken pox may need treatment with special medications. Anyone who has been exposed to chicken pox (even if they were immunized) is at risk for developing shingles later in life. 5. Scabies Scabies is a rash caused by a tiny mite that burrows under the skin. The rash is red, bumpy, and often located on wrists, between fingers, in armpits, and around the waistline. Scabies is treated with a lotion to kill the mite, but the rash can last up to a month.

3 6. Eczema Eczema is an itchy rash that is closely related to allergies. It is also known as "the itch that rashes." The exact cause of eczema is not known, but it seems to be related to abnormalities in the epidermis that make the skin drier than normal and more sensitive to common chemicals. Eczema is diagnosed based on the presence of major and minor criteria. There is no cure for eczema, but its symptoms can be managed by lifestyle changes and medications. 7. Hives Hives (urticaria) is a rash that can evolve and change in hours -- even minutes. Hives are actually divided into acute hives (lasting less than 6 weeks) and chronic hives (lasting longer than 6 weeks). This distinction is important because chronic hives actually have some strange causes like pressure or water-contact. The factors that can cause hives are numerous, and we often can't isolate one. The good news is that there are medications that can treat hives effectively. 8. Ringworm Ringworm is a fungal infection that typically occurs on the body. The rash is typically round, red, raised, and scaly on the outside of the lesion. Ringworm can be effectively treated with oral or topical medications. All Current 10th Graders Pennsylvania Department of Health requires students to have a physical examination completed upon entering 11th grade. This completed form is due August 1st. Please mail to or hand deliver to Radnor High School health office. (Parents please note the student physical exam form is NOT interchangeable with the sports physical form.) Please keep the school nurse informed of any medical changes, treatments, or immunization that your child has received so that his/her health record is current. Up-to-date information is essential in an emergency situation. Current 11th Graders: We are still accepting outstanding mandated physicals. Please submit paperwork to Mrs. Maureen Lerario in the Radnor High School health office: [email protected].

Financial Aid All college bound seniors are encouraged to complete The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Senior students and parents should complete the FAFSA form which is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov to receive financial aid while attending college. The result of the FAFSA, called SAR (Student Aid Report) is required as part of the Radnor Scholarship Fund Application. FAFSA applications can be filed beginning January 1st, 2016. Once the FAFSA is completed and submitted, you should receive your SAR within 7 – 10 days. Resources are listed below. Reporting Income on the FAFSA® – TIPS Completing the FAFSA can be a challenge. Here are 11 common FAFSA mistakes.

9 FAFSA Completion Sessions PHEAA, in partnership with PASFAA (Pennsylvania Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators) conducts free FAFSA® Completion Sessions to help Pennsylvania families complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). These sessions are held from January through April. 2015-16 FAFSA on the Web Preview Presentation To assist the community with the 2015-16 FAFSA processing cycle, the Department of Education has provided an online PowerPoint presentation containing information and screen shots. FSA ID Reminder – FSA ID Tipsheet The Federal PIN that students and parents previously needed to sign the FAFSA and access other aid information has been replaced by the FSA ID. Creating the FSA ID requires multiple steps that need to be completed independently by the student applicant and their filing parent. To help you with these steps, PHEAA has created a FSA ID Tipsheet. Please encourage your students and families to get their FSA ID prior to completing the FAFSA. Fun Fact - What is the average time to complete the FASFA? The average time to complete the 2014-15 FAFSA on the Web is 20 minutes and 07 seconds (through October 14, 2014). Community: RHS Scholarship Fund The deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 at 2:30 pm. The application is available online at www.radnorscholarshipfund.com. Hard copies are available in Guidance on Stephanie Querze’s desk. See below for an overview of the history, process, volunteer commitment and terms, which is pulled from Page one of the application. History of The Fund: The Radnor High School Scholarship Fund (The Fund) was founded in 1966 to provide financial assistance to deserving graduates of Radnor High School for post-high school education. The applications are then reviewed by a financial officer at a local university. The officer classifies the applicants based on financial criteria and prepares a summary report ranking the applicants according to category of need. All financial information received is held in strict confidence. You will be notified either way if you are moving forward in this process. Interviews: In early May, the finalists are interviewed at RHS during evening sessions by a selection committee comprised of both board members and community representatives. This review committee considers community involvement, academic performance and commitment to higher education to arrive at individual awards consistent with a budget established for the class. Each class has a specific budget available; the amount is dependent upon the success of our fund-raising activities. Radnor High School Scholarship Fund Award Ceremony: The Fund holds a short informal award ceremony in the Library just before Senior Awards Night in June (Monday, June 6th, 2016) to present a certificate to each new recipient and get a group photograph. Volunteer Commitment: Because of the continual rise in educational costs, The Fund has gradually increased its average award to provide a meaningful level of support. This puts pressure on our fund-raising activities and demands more volunteers to help support the various activities. To help The Fund maintain, and even increase, its historic level of support, we are now forced to require that each recipient and their parents/guardians assist our fund-raising efforts in some manner over the four-year duration of the scholarship. This help is most critical at the Fourth of July fireworks (our most important fund-raiser) when we need many volunteers to help with concessions, ticket-taking and parking at the high school prior to the fireworks. Scholarship

10 Terms: Commitments of scholarships are made for up to four years of full-time study and continuation of support over these years is contingent upon continuing financial need, satisfactory performance (C average or better) and our ability to fund the program. Recipients have six years over which to claim their four years of awards; this reflects the changing time frames of higher education. PSAT® Information A letter regarding the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT 10/11 taken on Wednesday, October 14th, 2015 was mailed home before winter break. This year, PSAT score reports will be available online https://studentscores.collegeboard.org/home on 1/7/2016. PSAT test booklets for 10th and 11th graders were distributed to students in homeroom after the winter break. Ninth grade students will not get a test book returned to them. Grade 9 PSAT Access Codes are available in the Guidance Office. If after January 7th you have difficulty obtaining your scores, please reach out to the High School Guidance Office. The RHS Guidance Office has received hard copies of the PSAT 8/9 score reports but has yet to receive hard copies of the PSAT/NMSQT 10/11 score reports.
