LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

Happy New Year! As we enter into January, many research projects are going to be started across our content areas. The RHS Library has a wide variety of print and online resources for all of our students. Regarding the print resources, did you know that we no longer have late fees? Students are relieved to know that they can check out a book and not have to worry about owing any money for being late. We do send late notices through Schoology! Check out some books!

Speaking of Schoology, you can find all of our database passwords and links in the Radnor High School Library Schoology Group’s Resources Tab. All students are members of this group. We also frequently update other resource materials such as Reading, Research, LibGuides, and more. All of our databases can be found here: http://rtsd.libguides.com/Databases. Students know the home access password.

Have you had a chance to see our new Library items this year? We update this LibGuide every month: http://rtsd.libguides.com/newlibraryitems. If you’d like to recommend a book, please let Mrs. Wetzel know.

Any questions? Contact [email protected].

FROM THE INSTRUCTIONAL COACH

While some students may view approaching the half-way point of the school year a good thing, others may be filled with trepidation. In high school, midyear means one thing: MIDTERMS. Cramming is not the most effective way to retain information. To encourage your children to gradually prepare for the exams, you may:

Suggest rereading notes multiple times a week, to include old quizzes and exams. Recommend they compose a study group. An efficient way to prepare for exams is to discuss

in groups. Taking advantage of the perspectives and strengths of others will heighten learning. Ask your son or daughter to share with you what they’ve learned. Help them to make connections between topics learned and:

o Themselves: how can they relate their experiences to what they are learning? o The world: how does what they are learning relate to the world? To include music,

movies, news, etc. o Another book: how does what they are learning relate to another book or article?

Propose they check out online resources such as: o Khan Academy – for videos of short, clear lessons on a vast range of topics. o Quizlet – to create virtual flash cards on relevant information. o Brainpop – for movies, quizzes, activities pages, and more!

Approaching the midyear mark and midterms does not have to cause anxiety or apprehension. Like Alexander Graham Bell says, “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” -Mrs. Misener

RADNOR HIGH SCHOOL HEALTH and SAFETY Maureen K. Lerario, CSN

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

Winter is upon us. And with winter comes winter activities. Shoveling snow is one major winter activity. Taking a few precautions while you are shoveling can help prevent unnecessary pain and suffering. If you have a history of heart problems or are inactive, talk to your doctor. There is an increase in the number of fatal heart attacks among shovelers. Warm up and stretch before you get started. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Shovel only fresh snow. Freshly fallen, powdery snow is easier to shovel than the wet, packed down variety. Push, don’t lift. It’s easier on your back and uses less energy than lifting. Pick the right shovel.

Page 4: Radnor High School Newsletter - Radnor Township School ......MLK Day of Service- January 18th, 2016 Junior Prom- April 30th, 2016 Happy Holidays - We would like to wish all RHS families

4 Lift with your legs bent, not your back. Keep your back straight. By bending and “sitting” into the movement, you’ll keep your spine upright and less stressed. Dress the part – dress in layers. If your body is telling you to stop, listen to it. Stop if you feel pain. Winter Safety: Home fires are more prevalent in the winter months than any other season. Cooking is the leading cause of all winter residential building fires. Other winter fire hazards include space heaters, fireplaces and candles. In 2012, over 16,000 Americans were treated for head injuries in emergency rooms because of playing winter sports (skiing, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling). Fatal crashes were 14% more likely to happen on the first snowy day of the season than on the day following. According to the CDC, most carbon monoxide poisonings happen in January; the second most in December. Carbon monoxide detectors save lives, but less than one-third of American homes have one installed. Don’t text and Drive!!!

Financial Aid All college bound seniors are encouraged to complete The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form is available on the web site and is easy to complete. The website is www.Fafsa.ed.gov. Although applications cannot be filed until after January 1st, it is helpful to review the procedures. Radnor High School Scholarship Fund The deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 at 2:30 pm. The application is available online at www.radnorscholarshipfund.com. Hard copies are available in Guidance on Stephanie Querze’s desk. See below for an overview of the history, process, volunteer commitment and terms, which is pulled from Page one of the application. History of The Fund: The Radnor High School Scholarship Fund (The Fund) was founded in 1966 to provide financial assistance to deserving graduates of Radnor High School for post-high school education. The applications are then reviewed by a financial officer at a local university. The officer classifies the applicants based on financial criteria and prepares a summary report ranking the applicants according to category of need. All financial information received is held in strict confidence. You will be notified either way if you are moving forward in this process. Interviews: In early May,

Page 8: Radnor High School Newsletter - Radnor Township School ......MLK Day of Service- January 18th, 2016 Junior Prom- April 30th, 2016 Happy Holidays - We would like to wish all RHS families

8 the finalists are interviewed at RHS during evening sessions by a selection committee comprised of both board members and community representatives. This review committee considers community involvement, academic performance and commitment to higher education to arrive at individual awards consistent with a budget established for the class. Each class has a specific budget available; the amount is dependent upon the success of our fund-raising activities. Radnor High School Scholarship Fund Award Ceremony: The Fund holds a short informal award ceremony in the Library just before Senior Awards Night in June (Monday, June 6th, 2016) to present a certificate to each new recipient and get a group photograph. Volunteer Commitment: Because of the continual rise in educational costs, The Fund has gradually increased its average award to provide a meaningful level of support. This puts pressure on our fund-raising activities and demands more volunteers to help support the various activities. To help The Fund maintain, and even increase, its historic level of support, we are now forced to require that each recipient and their parents/guardians assist our fund-raising efforts in some manner over the four-year duration of the scholarship. This help is most critical at the Fourth of July fireworks (our most important fund-raiser) when we need many volunteers to help with concessions, ticket-taking and parking at the high school prior to the fireworks. Scholarship Terms: Commitments of scholarships are made for up to four years of full-time study and continuation of support over these years is contingent upon continuing financial need, satisfactory performance (C average or better) and our ability to fund the program. Recipients have six years over which to claim their four years of awards; this reflects the changing time frames of higher education. Unofficial Transcript Requests for Grades 9 through 12 Grade 9 and 10 students must reach out to their counselor or a Guidance Secretary to request an unofficial transcript as the feature is unavailable on Family Connection. Grade 11 and 12 students or parents requesting unofficial copies of their transcript must follow our transcript request procedure in Naviance. Log onto Family Connection, click on the Colleges tab, click on the transcript links then click on ‘Request for scholarships or athletics’. Indicate transcript sent to self, parent and/or to a coach. Indicate your email address if you require an electronic copy. These unofficial requests are free of charge to students. How to Pay for a Transcript Transcript fees are $3.00 per transcript. Checks and money orders are acceptable forms of payment. Cash is not accepted. Checks are payable to ‘Radnor High School’. Payment is due the day after a transcript request is made on your Family Connection account on Naviance. You or your child may walk in the check to the Guidance Office between the hours of 7 am and 3 pm Monday through Friday. If your child’s counselor is Jeannie Semar, Jeri Banta or Amy Wess-please hand your check to Stephanie Querze, Guidance Secretary or drop it off on her desk. If your child’s counselor is JJ Lemon or Sarah Mechura-please hand your check to Leonor Perez, Guidance Secretary or drop it off on her desk.
