FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“You posted what online?!?!” Social media has significantly changed the cultural landscape of America. Today’s students share and express themselves via Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram, to name a few. As parents and educators, we want what is best for our kids, and helping them make good choices online is becoming more and more critical. The Radnor Township School District has taken a proactive approach to ensuring that our students are prepared to successfully navigate the digital world in which they live. All district librarians have gone through the process to become Common Sense Media certified. At Radnor High School formal lessons are taught in 9th and 10th grade health classes to combat cyberbullying, sexting, and oversharing. Lessons also focus on helping students understand the importance of privacy, and guide them on how to build a positive digital footprint. Based on their learning, students craft digital citizenship tips that are read weekly on the morning announcements. In English and Social Studies classes students are taught about navigating online databases, information literacy, proper use of citations, and copyright. We have an intelligent and respectful student body at Radnor High School. Providing our students the skills necessary to make good choices online is important to us. Please check out the online resources we have available for parents regarding Digital Citizenship.

LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER

Read Across America was a big success, as evidenced by our high school guest readers saying, “Mrs. Wetzel, we should do this at least four times a year!” We had a wonderful time traveling to WES, RES, IES, and RMS to read to other students throughout the district. Pictures of the

day can be found in this short video clip: https://youtu.be/qwXztr5kDVs.

Spring research projects are in full swing. If you need access to our resources and passwords for home access, please take a look in the Resources section of the Radnor High School

2 Noodletools is a great way for students to organize their research projects. Each student has a personal account, and can organize sources, embed links, create notecards, outline, and share a Google doc with their teacher. I work with many classes on how to use Noodletools, but feel free to reach out with any questions. I have also created some tutorials that can be found on

the Radnor High School Library YouTube Channel.

GUIDANCE

Guidance Office Hours during the school year are 7:00 am until 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Guidance Evening Events for 2015-2016 Please mark your calendar for the last 2015-2016 Guidance Evening Event: 4/7/16: *New Event* Sophomore Career Planning & Standardized Testing Overview from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Auditorium Sophomore Career Planning & Standardized Testing Overview Sophomore students and parents are invited to attend this informative session on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 6:30-8:00 pm in the RHS Auditorium. Guidance Counselors will review the Career Inventories that have been administered to students, help students and parents understand the Career resources available through Naviance, and will explain the standardized testing options and schedules available to students in junior and senior years. Please bring your student’s school issued iPad to access Naviance and to see your student’s career inventory reports. We hope you can attend this program! The Main Line College Fair: Villanova University at The Pavilion The Fair is on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 6:30-9:00 pm at The Pavilion. For over three decades, Villanova University, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Association of College Admission Counseling (PACAC) has hosted the Main Line College Fair. With nearly 300 colleges in attendance, this is a great opportunity for local students to start their college search by learning more about the colleges and universities that they are interested in. Click on this link https://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/admission/visit/collegefair.html which opens to Villanova’s Main Line College Fair webpage. Check back on their webpage for an updated list of attending colleges after April 1st. Juniors and Sophomores are encouraged to attend. AP Testing Advanced Placement tests will be administered from Monday, May 2nd to Friday, May 13th at Radnor High School. AP Test registration occurred in the fall, so no further registration paperwork is necessary. However, students must attend a mandatory pre-administration session on Wednesday, April 20th or Thursday, April 21st in the Faculty Dining Lounge between 7:30 am and 3 pm in order to fill out the necessary paperwork for testing. Pre-administration paperwork will take about 20 minutes. You must complete this paperwork on either day. Here’s the link to Week 1 and Week 2 AP Exam dates: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/takingtheexam/ap-calendar#examDate. If you have any questions regarding AP testing, please contact Mr. Lemon or Ms. Mechura in the Guidance Office. College Decision Letters Class of 2016: Please bring in a hard copy of all college decision letters with accepted, denied, waitlisted or deferred decisions to the Guidance Office. If you are unable to make a

Page 6: Radnor High School Newsletter - Radnor Township School ... 2016.pdfIt was another banner year for RHS Latin students at the 77th Annual Latin Week Competitions of the Philadelphia

6 copy, we’ll make a copy for you. You may also scan the letters to send as PDF’s or take a screen shot of the college web portal and email your Guidance Counselor. College Scholarship Letters Class of 2016: Please bring in a hard copy of the scholarship letter to the college you will be attending or any outside scholarships you’ve received and will apply toward the college you will be attending, ONLY IF you would like it listed in the RHS Graduation Program book. This is optional. The deadline for turning in your scholarship letters to Stephanie Querze in Guidance is Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 3 pm. Course Selection Any changes to student schedules can be made, including both major classes and elective choices, through Friday, May 27, 2016. Changing Requests After students finalize their course selections with their counselor, the requests can be verified by students and parents through the student’s HAC account. The final opportunity to change a course for the coming school year is Friday, June May 27th, 2016. A student must realize that changes may or may not take place based on the spaces available in the courses, especially when changing electives. The reason for this deadline is because any change in the number of students requesting a course has a direct impact for both the high school and district budget. After this date, the only changes that will be considered will be those that correct clerical errors, address a student’s failure to meet a course prerequisite, or result from completion of a summer school course. If parents or guardians decide to override a course recommendation, the override form must be completed and turned in before the course will be changed in HAC. The deadline for all override forms is also Friday, May 27, 2016 at 3 pm. Senior Transcript Fees: Seniors with outstanding balances will have their cap and gown withheld and may not be able to attend prom. Please bring in your payment to the Guidance Office as soon as possible. Please contact the Guidance Office for questions regarding your balance. If your Guidance Counselor is Jeannie Semar, Jeri Banta or Amy Wess, please contact Stephanie Querze Guidance Secretary, ext 3522 or at [email protected]. If your Guidance Counselor is JJ Lemon or Sarah Mechura, please contact Leonor Perez Guidance Secretary, ext 3529 or at [email protected] Juniors: Class of 2017 Brag Sheet Please complete your Brag Sheet, consisting of 11 questions, on your Family Connection account, by Friday, June 17, 2016. You may also mail your check to Radnor High School, 130 King of Prussia Road, Radnor, PA 19087, Attention: Guidance Office. Community: RHS Scholarship Fund The deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 6th, 2016 at 2:30 pm. The application is available online at www.radnorscholarshipfund.com. Hard copies are available in Guidance. Please contact Ms. Jeri Banta with any questions. See below for an overview of the history, process, volunteer commitment and terms, which is pulled from page one of the application. History of The Fund: The Radnor High School Scholarship Fund (The Fund) was founded in 1966 to provide financial assistance to deserving graduates of Radnor High School for post-high school education. The applications are then reviewed by a financial officer at a local university. The officer classifies the applicants based on financial criteria and prepares a summary report ranking the applicants according to category of need. All financial information received is held in strict confidence. You will be notified either way if you are moving forward in this process. Interviews: In early May, the finalists are interviewed at RHS during evening sessions by a selection committee comprised of both board members and community representatives. This review committee considers community involvement, academic performance and commitment to higher education to arrive at individual awards consistent with a budget established for the class. Each class has a specific budget available; the amount is dependent upon the success of our fund-raising activities. Radnor High School Scholarship Fund Award Ceremony: The Fund holds a short informal award ceremony in the Library just before Senior Awards Night in June (Monday, June 6th, 2016) to present a certificate to each new recipient and get a group photograph. Volunteer Commitment: Because of the continual rise in educational costs, The Fund has gradually increased its average award to provide a meaningful level of support. This puts pressure on our fund-raising activities and demands more volunteers to help support the various activities. To help The Fund maintain, and even increase, its historic level of support, we are now forced to require that each recipient and their parents/guardians assist our fund-raising efforts in some manner over the four-year duration of the scholarship. This help is most critical at the Fourth of July fireworks (our most important fund-raiser) when we need many volunteers to help with

Page 9: Radnor High School Newsletter - Radnor Township School ... 2016.pdfIt was another banner year for RHS Latin students at the 77th Annual Latin Week Competitions of the Philadelphia

9 concessions, ticket-taking and parking at the high school prior to the fireworks. Scholarship Terms: Commitments of scholarships are made for up to four years of full-time study and continuation of support over these years is contingent upon continuing financial need, satisfactory performance (C average or better) and our ability to fund the program. Recipients have six years over which to claim their four years of awards; this reflects the changing time frames of higher education. ____________________________________________________________________________ SAT’s on Saturday, May 7, 2016 RHS opens at 7:30 am. What Does CPR Do? In cases of emergencies including accidents, near drowning, heart attack, and more, CPR can mean the

difference between life and death. CPR is a way to keep oxygen-rich blood flowing to the brain and other organs, and help keep a person alive until he or she can get medical care. This is vital, as the lack of

oxygenated blood can cause brain damage and death within mere minutes. Without oxygen, permanent brain damage or death can occur in less than 8 minutes.

Why Learn CPR? CPR may be necessary during many different emergencies, including accidents, near-drowning,

suffocation, poisoning, smoke inhalation, electrocution injuries, and suspected sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Approximately 7 million adults and children suffer from disabling injuries in their own homes and backyards each year, resulting from accidents that may require CPR, according to the American Heart Association. Some of the common causes of "sudden death" include: Electric Shock, Heart Attacks,

Drowning, Severe Allergic Reactions, Choking, Drug Overdose, and Suffocation.

How to help a chocking victim.

How to help an unresponsive choking victim after they collapse.

How to use an AED to increase the chance of saving someone's life. Using an AED increases chances of survival over 90% if used. Most public venues, like malls, sports arenas, and schools have AED’s available

for use by a lay person.

What the signs, symptoms and responses for heart attack and stroke.

Some Facts to Consider: Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In 2007, among children 1 to 4 years old who died

from an unintentional injury, almost 30% died from drowning.

Fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

19% of drowning deaths involving children occur in public pools with certified Lifeguards present.

Of all preschoolers who drown, 70 percent are in the care of one or both parents at the time of the drowning and 75 percent are missing from sight for five minutes or less.

80% of Cardiac Arrests happen in the home.

Only 6.4% of Cardiac Arrest Victims survive because people witnessing the incident do not know CPR.

Over 200,000 people die of Sudden Cardiac Arrest every year.

Once the heart stops beating, brain death occurs in 4 to 6 minutes. Performing CPR provides oxygen to the brain and other vital organs to give the victim the best chance of full recovery after EMS takes over. If

CPR is given within the first four minutes of a cardiac arrest, the chance of survival doubles.

Cardiac arrest is still the number one killer in the U.S.

One in 6 men and one in 8 women over the age of 45 have had a heart attack or stroke according to the American Heart Association.

Approximately 45% of all heart attacks occur in people under age 65.
