Radnor High School Newsletter Issue 3 November 2012 FROM THE PRINCIPAL The Spirit of LM week I am very happy to be writing and thinking about something other than testing! LM week is upon us, and it is a time that virtually every graduate of RHS recalls fondly. LM week and the events associated with it, really help bring this school culture together. The focal point is a football game with Lower Merion and, yes, both programs are having a difficult year, but the student athletes from both Radnor and Lower Merion are to be commended. It is not an easy thing for anyone to put the work in and then risk that it may not result in a win. While the game is the centerpiece of the events, the week itself is about bonding and school and community spirit. The entire school works together toward one positive goal. The week of in school activity concludes with the rally on Friday afternoon. As I have requested in the past, the rally is for our students. We are at our capacity in the gym with all four classes in there. We just can’t accommodate adults and visitors. There will be a dress rehearsal on Thursday at 3 PM for parents and guests. This year the game is at Lower Merion at 2:30 PM on Saturday and, as always, it is a great time to catch up with Radnor friends and alumni. The LM dance is Saturday night in the main gym. The Spirit of LM week I am very happy to be writing and thinking about something other than testing! LM week is upon us, and it is a time that virtually every graduate of RHS recalls fondly. RHS Library News- November Newsletter

The Radnor High School Library has been brimming with activity this Fall. Ninth grade students have been coming in for their Library Orientations where they learn about the staff, facilities, and resources that we have to offer. I have also been meeting with classes for lessons on finding valuable sources, researching, and creating citations. Speaking of research, RHS subscribes to a number of databases that meet our research needs such as Newsbank, Gale, ProQuest, and ABC-Clio. You can find them on the library website, and the username and password is the same for all databases: RHSDL (Radnor High School Digital Library). Students and staff are all welcome to join the RHS Book Club on Wednesday, November 14th in the Black Box. We will be discussing Divergent by Veronica Roth (picked #1 in a recent survey for teen readers!) during all of the lunch periods. In October, we discussed the highly-acclaimed book, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Also this month, the librarians in the district presented information about the new digital citizenship curriculum at the Parent Involvement Night. I am thrilled to be a part of the Radnor High School community. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions at [email protected].

RADNOR ACTORS WORKSHOP

Join us on December 7th and 8th for a fun filled evening of theater! The Radnor Actors' Workshop proudly presents Almost Maine, a heartwarming comedy about love and relationships that takes place in the snowy, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Written by John Cariani, the play is a collection of short scenes that take place around the same time of night in the rural setting of Almost. Enjoy how one man mends a lady's heart; a young man who literally feels no pain encounters a woman who changes his life; A young lady who demands back all the love she gave, but receives something unexpected instead; Find out why a tattoo can turn a frown into a smile; and laugh as two frown men continually fall down, unable to stand on their own two feet! Come out and support the young actors and crew of the Radnor Actors' Workshop! The play will take place in the Black Box on December 7th and 8th at 7:00 PM. This family friendly play is very popular in high schools, recently overtaking A Midsummer Night's Dream as the most produced high school play. Tickets are available at the door. Be sure to visit Mr. Dietzler's Teacher Page for more information. See you there! .

CLASS OF 2013

The seniors have wasted no time making sure their last year at RHS is a great one! As the seniors found their school routines again they also used the various opportunities in October to get involved. The Homecoming tailgate was a huge success and everyone had a blast. Congratulations are in order for the entire Homecoming Court and to our King and Queen, Jimmy Puckette and Abby Junior. The biggest thing on the minds of the seniors (besides those college apps of course!) is LM week and the pep rally. The student involvement for this year's Harry Potter themed rally has been incredible. The seniors have been practicing weekly on their dances- thanks to our parent chaperones- which will be performed during the rally. The seniors also had a great time filming the LM video, it is sure to be a success! This year LM week falls on the first week of November. Things will slow down a little bit after LM week however, there are still some dates to keep in mind. LM week: Oct 29- Nov 3 November 1: Pep Rally dress rehearsal after school in the main gym (all parents are welcome to attend) November 2: End of the first quarter November 2: LM Rally (RHS students and staff only), the bonfire will be that evening November 3: LM game @LM high school, LM dance will be in the evening in the RHS gym November 6: No school for students November 15: Thanksgiving Dinner (6-8pm) November 20-23: No school for students (Thanksgiving Break) Have a great November and wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! The Senior Class Officers

CLASS OF 2014

Homecoming 2012 was a great success! Our s'more bar was the hit of the tailgate. Special thanks to Kathy Levenick, Lisa Rhome, Babs Bickhart, and Tricia Gsell for all their help! Many thanks to all who attended our October "Parent Council" meeting! We had some great discussions and got a lot of useful ideas. We will be meeting again in December to continue the discussion/booking of senior prom locations. LM is here! Let's represent the Slytherin house by bringing in the most non-perishable foods during the week of LM! Our donations help to stock the food pantry at the Greater Mount Vernon Church for the entire year! Your donation truly makes a difference. Food items can be dropped off in the cafeteria every morning the entire week of LM. Please also consider participating in this year's "Thanksgiving Dinner". Watch out for e-minders with more details and contact Jennifer O'Rourke with further questions. [email protected].

CLASS OF 2015 LM week and our annual assembly were fabulous. Thanks to so all who helped in chaperoning during our decoration work sessions. Your input as always was greatly appreciated. The “Ravenclaw” house put on a great show. Now as we focus again on our academics, I’d like to ask you to encourage your sophomores to get involved in our class projects and events. They will make new friends and lasting memories. Sincerely, Chrissie Pumarada and Wendy Greenawalt.

FROM THE PTSA The school year is well under way and there is much activity to confirm that. The Parent Class Councils are busy planning LM Week (Oct 29--Nov 2) alongside their student council members and teacher advisors. The School Store is selling student directories for $15 along with other student essentials. Radnor Middle School PTO and Radnor Educational Foundation are sponsoring Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, a renowned CHOP adolescent medicine physician, author and lecturer. He has been invited to speak to the Radnor community on what has recently been perceived, by several concerned teachers, as a rising level of stress in our school community. On the afternoon of Thursday, November 8, Dr. Ginsburg will be providing three hours of professional development for the entire RTSD staff. In this workshop, Dr. Ginsburg will provide the skills and guidance for our teachers, and their students, to develop healthy methods of coping with stress, and to build a stronger, more resilient, and ultimately happy school community. That evening, Dr. Ginsburg will be holding a Parent Forum from 7-9PM, at Radnor Middle School that is open to every member of the Radnor community and beyond. And to complete the circle and make this a truly community wide effort, Dr. Ginsburg will be returning in January 2013 to conduct grade level assemblies for the RMS students. By the time Dr. Ginsburg completes this project, we will all - staff, families and all concerned adults across the district - be able to have a common conversation about how to better cope with the challenges we may face as students, teachers, parents and human beings. Our first PTSA meeting on October 10th was well attended. Principal Mark Schellenger, Assistant Principal of Academic Affairs Haley Butler, Dean of Students Brett Thomas and Guidance Chair Donna Ward each gave us a brief report of how the school year is progressing in their respective departments. The next meeting will be held on November 14. As always, parents (and students) are welcome. Some of the fall’s future PTSA events include the Staff Appreciation Dinner on November 19 which is the first day of student conferences. Contact Kathy Martin ([email protected]) or Christe Terrion ([email protected]) to find out how you can help. November is also the time for the first Holiday Baskets distribution. Jill Stavrakos ([email protected]) is the coordinator and she welcomes your support. A big thank you to Cindy Ruben for coordinating the Welcome Breakfast held at the end of September. An enjoyable time was had by all. Bobbie Lane, the administrator for the student directories for the past several years, is looking for someone to take over for her next year as her youngest son graduates from high school in the spring. Bobbie did an amazing job of simplifying this once incredible task by using a technology company this past summer and is happy to ease the next coordinator into the job. She can be reached at [email protected]. We wish you all a heart-warming Thanksgiving. Sincerely, Nancy DerSimonian and Liz Gallagher PTSA Co Presidents

9 RADNOR YEARBOOK

Dear Parent/Guardians of RHS Senior: Each year, the Radnor Yearbook includes a special section containing childhood pictures of the graduating class. This section is an opportunity for the parents of our seniors to show their pride in their children and to wish them continued success. This year, the yearbook staff is asking you to continue the tradition by purchasing space where your child’s photograph can be prominently displayed. Not only will you be creating a cherished memory for your senior, but also you will be helping us produce the best possible yearbook without dramatically raising its cost. Share your memories of your child by emailing the photo or photos to [email protected]. Please complete the order form below and submit it with your check or money order, payable to RHS Yearbook. We appreciate your support and look forward to receiving your order soon! Remember, the deadline for the Childhood Memory Pictures is December 3, 2012. Please send money and form to Mrs. J. Lynam at the High School.
