FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Prep—Year1)

Welcome back to the 2018 school year. I’d like to extend a very warm welcome to our new Prep students and their families as

well as families new to the area. It’s been very pleasing to see how quickly students in Prep and Year 1 have settled into school

routines this year.

It will be an exciting year for our students, with a lot of engaging learning ahead. As the weeks go on, I’ll be sharing some of the

news from the classrooms in Prep and Year 1. This week, I wanted to highlight the huge amount of work the Prep and Year 1

teams have put into setting up their classrooms, in particular the classes that are implementing the Walker Learning Approach. As

you can see from the photos below, our students are extremely lucky to be walking into such engaging, inspirational and intentional

learning spaces. Stay tuned for more updates as the term progresses.

This is a great time of the year to

begin talking about our SPORTy

behaviour expectations with your

child. Take a few minutes to

discuss the concepts of Self-

Control, Persistence, Organisation,

Respect and Team Player attitude

with your child at home, as we are

here at school. Taking the time to

do this will no doubt help support a

smooth start to the year for your

children.

Prep Car Park

To our new parents, and a friendly reminder to returning families, it is essential you drive cautiously and keep an

eye out for students in the Prep car park. Please note that the drop off and pick up zone is a 2 minute loading

zone and needs to be used accordingly. This zone is used by numerous school buses and parents to pick up and

drop off students quickly and safely. This is not a place to park and leave your car. Police do patrol this car park

and issue infringement notices regularly. Please help us ensure our children are safe by parking in appropriate

designated areas.

Prep Bus students

Parents of students catching school buses, it is imperative you have notified both the childcare service provider/bus/transport

company and the school when there are changes to your child’s bus schedule. Please also remind your child of these changes so

they are aware of pick up arrangements.

Before and after school procedures

Parents waiting for their child/ren in Year One are requested to wait in the undercover area until the bell goes at 3pm. Waiting

outside the classrooms distracts our students and causes learning time to be lost. Parents waiting with younger siblings are asked

to supervise them at all times, to prevent any issues arising. Prep parents are asked to wait in or around the grassed area outside

the Prep unit until 2:55pm in the afternoon.

I wish all of our students, parents and carers, and staff a happy, safe and successful school year.

Regards

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Yr 2—Yr 3)

As Deputy Principal of Years 2 & 3, I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all of our new and existing

families!

We are welcoming three new teachers to our Year 2 & 3 team this year. These teachers are Mrs Ellen Ellis 3A,

Mr Adam Daley 3D, and Mr David Simmons 3B (previously one of our Year 6 teachers). All three of these

teachers come with a wealth of experience from other schools and other year levels. We are very pleased to

have them on board!

Indigenous Project Grant – Community involvement!

‘The Queensland Government, through the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018), provided funding to Raceview State School for the ‘Sharing the Dream - Making us Visible’ project. This project is part of the Reconciliation in Queensland Schools program, an initiative of the GC2018 Reconciliation Action Plan.

Last Tuesday, an invitation was sent via email, to all indigenous families inviting you to attend a meeting on Friday 2 nd February at 9:00am.

At this meeting, we shared our plans and invited you to give ideas to further enhance our project. Thank you to those parents and

grandparents who were able to attend. The project must be completed by the end of Term 1 and I am sure that if we work together as a

community, we will reach our goals!

This year our indigenous aides have moved. Mary Ballangarry and Tracey Evans are now situated in

H Block between two Year 1 classes. Access to their room is at the back of the block opposite M

Block. Mary and Tracey have been busy setting up their new room for our indigenous students and

their friends. This is where our first meeting was held. Please feel free to contact them if you would

like any assistance or advice.

Attendance

All Year 2 and 3 classes have now settled into the new school year. As I walked through the classrooms this week, it was obvious that

students were practising the SPORTy behaviour. There were many positive posters on walls to ensure students begin their learning this

year with a positive outlook. What a great start to the year!

Please remember that every child needs to be at school every day to ensure that

they don’t miss out on their learning! If your child is going to be away, please contact

the office.

If you would like to contact me, please telephone the school on 3294 111 or email

me at [email protected] .

RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL — Page 4

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

(Yr 4—Yr 6)

Welcome back everyone! We’ve had a great start to 2018 so far. It has been lovely to visit classes and see students engaged in their

learning and settled back into the school routines. It’s always hard after such a long break to get organised and back to the day to day

school routine at home. I thank parents for having their children at school on time each day and with the correct booklist materials. We

are aware that there have been some delays with some booklist requirements.

SWPBS As always with the start of a new year, our staff are busy teaching school routines and expectations to our students. One of the problems

we always encounter each year is ‘bullying’. At Raceview State School we do not tolerate bullying. In saying that, it’s important to

understand the definition of bullying.

Definition of bullying

The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or

psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or

online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or

fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance);

not liking someone or a single act of social rejection;

one-off acts of meanness or spite; and

isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence.

However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.

If you feel that there is a bullying issue involving your child, we ask that you speak to your child’s teacher first. Once the teacher is aware,

the situation can be monitored. Sadly with many cases of bullying, nothing gets reported to staff and therefore the school is unaware of

any issues.

As a parent you have a role in supervising and regulating your child’s online activities at home and its impact on the reputation and privacy of others. Parents are their child’s first teachers — so they will learn online behaviours from you.

Is it appropriate to comment or post about schools, staff or students?

Parental and community feedback is important for schools and the department. If you have a compliment, complaint or enquiry about an issue at school, the best approach is to speak directly to the school about the matter, rather than discussing it in a public forum.

While many schools use social media to update parents of school notices, the department prefers that parents contact schools directly with a compliment, complaint or enquiry due to privacy considerations. Imagine if your doctor, accountant or banking institution tried to contact you to discuss important matters via Facebook.

If you have raised an issue with a school or know that another person has, consider refraining from discussing those details on social media, particularly the names of anyone involved.

Keep comments calm and polite, just as you would over the telephone or by email.

If you encounter negative or derogatory content online which involves the school, hinders a child’s learning and/or affects the school community at large, contact the school principal.

SOCIAL MEDIA General tips

Being aware of a few simple strategies can help keep the use of social media positive and constructive:

Before you post something online, ask yourself if the community or individual really need to know. Is it relevant, positive and helpful?

Remember that what you post online is a direct reflection of who you are. People will potentially form lasting opinions of you based on what you post online.

Be a good role model. If things get heated online consider logging out and taking a few moments to relax and think. Hasty, emotive responses could inflame situations unnecessarily. Be mindful when commenting, try to keep general and avoid posting anything that could identify individuals.

A few years ago parents may have discussed concerns or issues with their friends at the school gate. Today with the use of social media, online discussions between you and your close friends can very quickly be shared with a much wider audience, potentially far larger than intended.

Taking a few moments to think about the content you are about to post could save someone being upset, embarrassment, and possible legal action.

Student Leaders

Our newly elected 2018 student leaders have started the year off well and are

enthusiastic and ready for a great year. To assist with being great school

leaders, they will all be attending the GRIP Leadership Conference at the

Sleeman Sports Complex on Monday 26 February. I have attended this

conference in the past with our student leaders and am confident that the day

will be worthwhile for our Year 6 leaders.

Over the holidays one of our leaders who was elected last year left the school.

Last week we held a quick election for a new Waratah House Captain. I am

pleased to announce that Deepthi Srinivas was elected into this position by

the Waratah students in Year 6. Congratulations Deepthi, I know you will be an

asset to the team!

Student Leader Induction Ceremony

Student leader badges will be presented at a special assembly for Yr 6 students and family members of student leaders. This assembly will

be held in the school hall on Friday 23rd February at 9am. Student leaders will bring home an invitation for family members early next

week, so save the date.

Assembly Changes

Due to the large number of students at our school, we have decided to trial two assemblies. Assembly day will still be on a Monday,

however Senior Assembly will be from 9am until 9:30am and Junior Assembly will be from 2:15pm until 2:45pm. During the last week of

each term, we will have a whole school assembly in the 2:15pm time slot.

Last Monday at assembly I showed some photos from our RSPCA fundraiser. I am pleased to be able to pass on the gratitude from AWL

Willawong, German Shepherd Rescue and Rehabilitation in Logan and the RSPCA in Ipswich. All of these organisations rely heav ily on

donations and last year we were able to support three animal rescues due to the generosity of our school community.

READING AT RACEVIEW

Welcome back to Raceview State School, and if you are new to the Raceview family, we extend our best regards.

Reading continues to be a priority at Raceview SS. Listening to your child read and reading to and with your child

continues to help the development of your child’s reading.

The benefits of reading cannot be underestimated. Helping your child read is investing in their future.

1. Children who read often and widely get better at it.

After all, practice makes perfect in almost everything humans do, and reading is no different.

2. Reading exercises our brain.

Reading is a much more complex task for the human brain rather than watching TV, for example. Reading strengthens

brain connections and builds NEW connections.

3. Reading improves concentration.

Children have to sit still and quietly so that they can focus on the story when they are reading. If they read often, they

will develop the skill to do this for longer.

4. Reading teaches children about the world around them.

Through reading a variety of books children learn about people, places, and events outside of their own experiences.

5. Reading improves vocabulary and language skills.

Children learn new words as they read. Subconsciously, they absorb information on how to structure sentences and

how to use words and other language features effectively in their writing and speaking.

6. Reading develops a child's imagination.

As we read our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. While we are

engaged in a story we are also imagining how a character is feeling. Young children then bring this knowledge into their

everyday play.

7. Reading helps children to develop empathy.

As children develop, they begin to imagine how they would feel in that situation.

8. Reading is fun.

A book or an e-reader doesn't take up much space and is light to carry, so you can take it anywhere so you can never

be bored if you have a book in your bag.

9. Reading is a great way to spend time together.

Reading together on the sofa, bedtimes stories and visiting the library are just some ways of spending time together.

10. Children who read achieve better in school.

Reading promotes achievement in all subjects, not just English. Children who are good readers tend to achieve better

across the curriculum.

NEWSFLASH

SWIMMING YEAR 2—6 TERM 1

Swimming for Years 2 – 6 begins this week and will

run until the last week of Term 1. Permission

notes were sent home last week and will need to

be returned to your child’s class teacher before

they are allowed to swim.

There is a slight change to the swimming carnival program

for this year that all parents will need to be aware of.

The 9/10 years and 11/12/13 years carnival will now be held in the last

week of Term 1 (previously held in Term 4). The Years 1, 2 & 3

carnival will still be held at the end of Term 4. The reason behind this

change is so there is a decrease in the number of events in the final

couple of weeks of the year.

If you are interested in helping out during your child’s swimming

lesson, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. Any help

would be greatly appreciated.

GOLD COIN DONATION FREE SWIMS

Starting this week, we will be holding gold coin

donation lunch time swims for Years 2 – 6. All

money raised from these gold coin swims will go

to the Raceview State School Student Council to

fund the purchase of the speaker system for the

oval and some other small projects. In Term 4

last year, we raised a total of $600 for the

system and we are hoping to do better this year.

The following is a timetable for these sessions (They will run until the

end of Term 1):

Monday 1st & 2nd Break – Year 5 (and 4C & D)

Tuesday 1st Break – Year 6

Wednesday 1st Break – Year 3

Wednesday 2nd Break – Year 4

Thursday 2nd Break – Year 2 (and swimming voucher holders)

We hope these fundraising swims will be supported by all students and

we invite parents who are able to help supervise to come along and

enjoy the fun with your children and their peers.

**SWIMMING CARNIVAL CHANGE UPDATE**

The annual Raceview State School Senior Swimming Carnivals for

2018 have changed and will now be held in Term 1. The two days of

competition will occur in Week 9. The dates for each carnival are as

follows:

11, 12 & 13 years – Tuesday 27 March 2018

9 & 10 years – Wednesday 28 March 2018

Year 1, 2 and 3 Swimming Fun Day – Term 4

Programs will be available to buy on the morning of each day for a

gold coin donation.

Presentations for age champions (9 – 12 Years) and overall house

winner trophy will be held at the hall on Wednesday 28 March 2018 at

2pm.

There will be a barbecue available for all parents, family members,

students and staff to purchase at morning tea on each of the days. We

are also looking for parent volunteers from our current student

leaders to help with cooking and service. If you are able to assist,

please contact me at the school as soon as possible. I am also seeking

parent help during the 11 & 12 years carnival. If you are able to

volunteer some time, please let me know.

Can I please ask that all students attending these carnivals have a hat

(named), water bottle and all swimming equipment required. Please

make sure that uniforms are named as we have had a lot of lost

property in the past following these events.

I am looking forward to seeing you all in attendance to support our

students as they swim for house points or championship glory. They’ll

be some great days enjoyed by all.

INTERSCHOOL SPORT WINTER SEASON

The Winter Interschool Sport season (For Year 5 & 6)

begins in Week 7 of Term 1. Students will participate

in rugby league, soccer, netball and hockey and it

would be great to see parents and family members

coming along to support our teams on a Friday

afternoon.

Students will have nominated for their chosen sports last Friday

afternoon and will then participate in selection trials in the coming

weeks before permission notes are sent home to students selected in

the various teams. These will need to be returned to the team coach

as soon as possible.

Please be aware that this year there has been a slight increase in the

bus costs for students. The fee was previously $7 per week to cover

their transport however this year we have had to raise the fee to

$8 per week. This is the first price increase in almost 9 years.

If students are selected in a squad, they are committed to participating

in training and games for the entire nine weeks. This is outlined in the

permission notes and in the student code of conduct. Good luck to all

teams.

WESTERN RANGES DISTRICT SCHOOL SPORT

Just a reminder to students and family members that the process for

District Representative Sports trials has changed significantly this year.

In most sports, students will trial for a position in our Zone team

(Ipswich South) before heading in to trial for the Western District

team. This is due to the large number of schools within our current

district.

Students who wish to trial for these teams will first need to nominate

their intention to me and I will hold a short trial at school to

determine that they are at the standard required for these District

trials. I need everyone to be aware that this pathway is for

REPRESENTATIVE standard students and are not a “come and

try” event.

Once again, I have attached the Western Ranges District document to

this newsletter for you to look through and develop an understanding

about how the program will run from 2018 and beyond. If you have

any questions regarding the District program, please do not hesitate

to contact me.

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself

and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account they can start banking straight away. They just need to

bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their

Dollarmites deposit wallet.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask

for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the

school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking

RACEVIEW STATE SCHOOL

The Ipswich Hospital Foundation Walking

Schools Program is running at Raceview State School.

The Walking Schools program involves an IHF volunteer

walking students around the school grounds on a day morning from 8:15am to 8:35am approximately.

This is a great way to get kids moving and closer to their recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity as well

as engaging them before school.

The Walking Schools Program provides children with incentives and goals to work towards to keep them

interested and engaged.

A permission form has been given to all students to complete for the program.

If you would like more information about the Walking

Schools Program or would like to be involved, please feel free to contact Kayley from the IHF at

[email protected] or on 1300 736 428.
