GERD

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic digestive disease. GERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into food pipe (esophagus). The backwash (reflux) irritates the lining of esophagus and causes GERD.

Heartburn

• Heartburn is a burning pain in chest, just behind your breastbone. The pain is often worse when lying down. It happens when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus, the tube that carries food from mouth to stomach.

Duodenal ulcers.

• Ulcers that occur in the stomach are called gastric ulcers. Ulcers that occur in the upper area of the small intestine, which is called the duodenum, are called duodenal ulcers.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

A rare disorder caused by a tumor called a gastrinoma, most often occurring in the pancreas. The tumor secretes the hormone gastrin, which causes increased production of gastric acid leading to severe recurrent ulcers of the esophagus, stomach, and the upper portions of the small intestine (the duodenum and jejunum).

Action of Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole is a selective and irreversible proton pump inhibitor. Rabeprazole suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+, K+-ATPase) enzyme system found at the secretory surface of parietal cells. It inhibits the final transport of hydrogen ions (via exchange with potassium ions) into the gastric lumen. Since the H+, K +-ATPase enzyme system is regarded as the acid (proton) pump of the gastric mucosa, rabeprazole is known as a gastric acid pump inhibitor.
