What this conference is about …
The purpose of this two-day educational conference is to provide a venue for farmers, landowners and supporters of agriculture to come together to network and learn about new opportunities and strategies that promote farm profitability and sustainability.
Highlights of this year’s conference!
New & Beginning Farmer Track - Starting a farm business can seem overwhelming. Where do I begin? What do I need to know? What enterprise should I consider, etc.? Under this educational track, participants can expect to hear timely seminars that will not only answer these questions, but also equip them with the knowledge and resources needed to own and operate a farm business more successfully.
Home Food Preservation Class – Back by popular demand! This year’s conference will be offering (2) food preservation classes to teach basic USDA approved canning techniques to adults over 18 years. Participants on Friday will learn about pressure canning and Saturday’s session will include water bath canning. Each participant will receive an instructional handbook, materials, and supplies for a hands-on canning activity. Spaces are limited. Pre-registration is required. (*Note: Saturday’s class will run from 1:30pm to approximately 4:30pm) AGsploration! – is the theme for our youth educational program this year which encourages awareness of production agriculture, how the environment affects Maryland agriculture, and how agriculture affects everyday life in relation to nutrition and health. Lesson topics include animal and plant agriculture, agriculture and the environment and agriculture technology. Registration is free for those whose parents are participating in the Small Farm Conference and $10 per youth whose parents are not participating. For more information, please contact Nicole Skorobatsch at (410) 651-1350 or via email [email protected].
Keynote Speaker
Ben Burkett, farmer and grassroots organizer, has worked throughout the South to
champion the rights of small farmers and ensure their livelihoods through a movement known as food sovereignty. Even after his own farm was devastated by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Ben has worked with local farmers to develop a rebuilding plan and minimize the disruption. On a broader level, Ben is building the framework to sustain a new generation of small farmers, especially farmers of color. He currently serves as the director of the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives. He is also a board member of the Crescent City Farmer’s Market in New Orleans; secretary/manager of Indian Springs Cooperative located in Petal, Mississippi; vice president of the National Family Farmers Coalition; Vice President of Community Food Security Coalition; and a board member of the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working
Group. He has traveled extensively to Africa, South America, and Europe to learn more about sustainable agricultural practices.
