Appraise the evidence supporting early rehabilitationand mobility in critically ill adults and children.Describe and discuss how to change ICU clinicalpractice to implement early rehabilitation programs.Describe the management of ICU medications, devices(including mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy),and monitoring systems for rehabilitation of adult andpediatric ICU patients.Explain rehabilitation-related assessments andinterventions suitable for adult and pediatric ICU andacute care patients.Describe strategies to engage critically ill patients andtheir families for activity and mobility, includingcommunication and psychology-based strategies.Describe the impact and challenges of ICU survivorshipon patients and their families, including Post-IntensiveCare Syndrome (PICS) and care delivery in post-ICUcritical care settings.Explain current practice and interdisciplinary roles ofnursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speechlanguage pathology, respiratory therapy, psychologists, and child life specialists in an adult and pediatric ICUrehabilitation program.Describe disease-specific rehabilitation strategies forcritically ill patients.Describe an approach to feeding in pediatric ICUpopulations.Describe the management of sedation and delirium foradult and pediatric patients to promote ICU mobility.

After attending this activity, the learner will demonstratethe ability to:

DESCRIPTIONInterdisciplinary collaboration and coordination is vital tofacilitate early mobility and rehabilitation in the intensive careunit (ICU) setting. A recent stakeholders’ conference aimed atimproving long-term outcomes for ICU survivors identifiedimportant ‘silos’ among critical care and rehabilitationclinicians working in the ICU, with these ‘silos’ acting as abarrier to collaboratively advancing the field and improvingpatient outcomes. While clinical trials support the benefits ofearly rehabilitation for mechanically ventilated patients, implementing these interventions requires creating a new ICUculture based on proactive rehabilitation and interdisciplinarycollaboration between all critical care and rehabilitationclinicians. This course will bridge the interdisciplinary gapfrom research to clinical implementation at the bedside.
