INTRODUCTION

St. Paul’s College, a premier institution in Kochi, was instituted with the vision to impart value

based quality education to all, especially to women and the educationally, socially and financially

marginalized communities and to create a new enlightened generation. The mission of the college

is to equip the young men and women with academic and digital expertise and to inculcate in them

a comprehensive outlook of life and a spirit of social sensibility to face the global challenges.

Uplifting Marginalized Community

The dream of our founder patrons to impart value based quality education to all students who pass

its portals, especially the backward communities and women has been carried forward successfully

to date. The college gives due consideration to the fulfilment of its objective to uplift the poor and

under privileged sections of the society by providing opportunities and facilities in the field of

higher education. The admission is done by the college on merit basis. 20% of the sanctioned seats

are reserved for the students from the disadvantaged communities like scheduled cast and

scheduled tribes. 20% of the sanctioned seats are reserved for the students from Latin community

(OBC). The equal opportunity cell functioning in the college ensures inclusion of the SC, ST,

OBC, OEC students and other deserving students into the mainstream.

The minority intake of college for the last five years is as follows

Welfare of Minorities

Majority of the students admitted to the aided programs belong to the economically weaker

sections of the society. Special attention is given to provide financial assistance to these poor

students and those from the minority communities. Our college takes initiative to provide all

available resources like funds from Vincent de Paul Society, students supporting scheme,

Navadarsan and scholarships to the deserving students other than the government e-grant.

The Vincent de Paul Society works in our college as a financial support to the poor students by

assisting them with tuition costs and mentors each students through their college career believing

that every young person deserves the chance of a bright future. Student Assistant scheme is a

program intended to provide financial aid to the students coming from poor and economically

backward communities. The funds are raised for this scheme by collecting a small portion of every

teaching staff salary on a monthly basis. Navadarsan, public charitable organization initiated by

the Archdiocese of Verapoly also supports our students financially every year providing

scholarships to them to achieve academic excellence. Archbishop Attipetty Memorial

Scholarship was introduced in the year 2020 for the self-financing stream of students through

which half of the semester fees were paid by the scholarship amount.

Also our college has established some endowments that distribute at the end of every academic

year to encourage and support the students those who are excellent in studies. Endowment

scholarships are awarded to one fifty two students during five years.

Academic Activities

The introduction of Choice Based Credit System calls for a new paradigm based on student-centric

learning rather the conventional teacher-centric one. In the new system focus is not just on what is

taught but on how effective learning should be promoted. Apart from the conventional classroom

lecture method and ‘chalk and talk’ method, the following are the methods adopted by the college

to promote student-centric learning and for their upliftment. Each department categorizes students

as active learners and slow learners in order to motivate them as per their special needs and to

provide support individually whenever possible.



Sugam - Learning made easy

All the programmes made available to slow learners are brought under the title- Sugam with the

theme “learning made easy.” The college envisages these programmes in order to bring about the

maximum output from each student. Slow learners have opportunities to improve their

performance through bridge courses, orientation programme, remedial classes, Scholar Support

Programme, teacher support through mentoring, tutorials, programmes to improve language

skills/ writing skills, Bank/PSC/NET coaching and Case study analysis . These initiatives bridge

the gap between advanced learners and slow learners.

Aagam- Towards Wisdom and Success

Programmes for Advanced learners are titled as Aagam- towards Wisdom and Success. Under

Aagam there are programmes like WWS, ASAP, Interaction with eminent personalities,

Competitive exam coaching, Career Advancement programs and Online/ SWAYAM courses

Participative Learning

The College considers students as their important stakeholder. The entire academic process of

planning, delivery of curriculum and assessment is designed to be student centric. Various

efforts are made to make learning more students centric by focusing on specific learning

outcomes for all courses and making it more participatory and interactive. Seminars,

workshops, group discussions, paper presentations, paper publications, projects, discussions,

debates, quizzes, peer teaching, club activities etc. are used by various departments to ensure

participative learning and enhance skills.

Independent Learning

Independent learning is a method or learning process where learners have ownership and control

of their learning – they learn by their own actions and direct, regulate, and assess their own

learning. The independent learner is able to set goals, make choices, and decisions about his

learning needs, take responsibility for constructing and carrying out his own learning, monitor his

progress toward achieving his learning goals, and self-assess the learning outcomes. College

promotes independent learning through giving assignments and seminars, fully furnished

digitalized library with internet facility, INFLIBNET facility is provided to support learning and

academic pursuit, Virtual laboratories are used to enhance learning, research oriented projects are

assigned to students individually, Add-on courses ,certificate, diploma courses are offered for

enhancement of the curriculum and student enrichment.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is the application of theory and academic content to real-world experiences, either

within the

classroom, within

the community

which advances

program or course-

based learning

outcomes that are

specifically focused

on employability

skills. Experiential

learning requires the student to not only engage in the experience activity, but also requires them to

reflect upon their learning and how their skills learned through their academic studies can be applied

beyond the classroom. Experiential learning can be subject focused, community focused and work

focused. Subject focused experiential learning generally includes field trips, experiments in labs etc.

In our college each department ensures experiential learning for acquiring knowledge for example

Economics department ensures experiential learning not in behavioral economics but in other areas

of economics such as labour, environmental, economics, macroeconomics etc. students are asked to

conduct surveys on economic issues through which they learn data collection, data analysis and data

interpretation likewise through household budget preparation, they learn fundamentals of budgeting.

Language departments provide experiential learning through role play, theatre performance,

engaging in authentic arts, report writing, manuscript, magazines etc.

Del La Mare

As a tribute to the victims of the flood in Kerala in 2018, the students of Department of English

made a theatrical show on 29th August, 2019 entitled “Del La Mare”. The students of I, II and III

B.A. English participated in this programme. Prof. Lima Sunny was the co-ordinator of the

programme.

Looking Back: Shakespeare



As 2016 commemorated 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare the department

organized a few competitions to relive the bard and celebrate his work from 8 to 10 February

2017. Photography Competition, Postcard Competition, Cartoon Competition, Literature Quiz,

Soliloquy Competition were some of the programmes organized by the department. Capsule

theatre was the main attraction of the one week celebrations. Students performed small scenes

from the Shakespeare’s works.

Science subjects like Physics, Chemistry provides experiential learning through preparation of

household cleaning items, manures, sanitizers, making of LED blubs, hands on experiments and its

exhibitions will create scientific temper, research aptitude, application of scientific knowledge to

societal need , demonstrating skill etc.

Financial Services provide experiential learning through mandatory internships. Community focused

experiential learning includes extension activities and outreach programmes. Work focused

Community Support Programs

Engaging in community service provides students, the opportunity to become active members

of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service or

volunteerism enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service

to those who need it most.

Co-curricular activities

Onam Celebrations

Onam Celebrations were conducted in the month of September. The nostalgia and the cultural

purity of Kerala reflected in the onam celebration of the college. Students appeared in the

traditional dress, made flower carpets and had onam meals together. The celebration was colourful

and enthusiastic and is conducted yearly. Onam procession lead by ‘Mahabali’ with “Shingarimelam”

and ‘Pulikali’ was conducted. Varieties of competitions such as ‘malayala manga’, ‘ malayala sreeman’, ‘

kudamthallu’, Class wise ‘pookalam’ competition and Department wise tug of war etc were conducted.



Arts Festival

An arts festival is a festival that can encompass a wide range of art forms including music, dance,

film, fine art, literature, poetry and isn't solely focused on visual arts.



The Arts Fest of the college titled CHILANKA 2K 15-16 was inaugurated by famous film director

Mr. Lal Jose on 27-01-2016. Well known actor Mr. Amith Chakkalakal and Film Director Mr.

Renjith Sankar graced the occasion with their presence. The festival continued for two days.

The Arts Festival of the year 2016-17 was conducted along with ‘MESHUGGAH’, an inter

collegiate cultural extravaganza, on 18th and 19th January, 2017. The campus bubbled over with

energy, with participants from other colleges for such events as wall art, ramp show and dance

competitions.



Sports events

The Department of Physical Education in St Paul’s College, Kalamassery was established in

1965. In our department many students won sports achievements in the International, National,

State, District, All India Inter University, South –Zone Inter University & M G University

Sports & Games.

The department has around 120 sports students participating in various competitions in MG

University & All India Inter-University Sports & Games, There are also active participations

in many district, State & National Sports events conducted by many departments, The College

was ranked 22nd in sports achievements & performance among 260 colleges under M.G

University . The department also organises many sports activities like M G University Sports

Competitions, Blind Cricket Activities in association with Kerala Blind Cricket Association,

District Cricket Activities in Association with Ernakulam District Cricket Association, Inter-

District Cricket Activities in Association with Kerala Cricket Association, Inter- State &

National Cricket Activities in Association with BCCI.



The department organises many intercollegiate/ Inter-Departmental Sports competitions & Sports

Quiz competition. Our students have achieved many trophies and places in many private

intercollegiate tournaments conducted in Kerala as well as Interstate intercollegiate tournaments.

The Green initiatives of the department were to make our play grounds plastic free. We joined

hands to our college in the successful completion of making Miyawaki Forest to make our college

green and pollution free campus.

Many International Cricket Players like Yuvaraj Singh, Harbajan Singh, Cheteswar Pujara,

Jayadev Undakat, Sanju Samson Tinu Yohannan, Basil Thampi etc. had visited the department

and college during these 5 years.

Workshop on Value Added Products

The Department of Chemistry organized a two day workshop on “Value added

Products” on 7th July 2015 at Chemistry lab, St. Pauls College Kalamassery. 17

Poster Making Competition

The Department of Chemistry conducted a poster making competition for girls in connection with

Ozone Day celebrations on 29th September 2015, Tuesday 2.00pm. The theme of the program was

“30 years of healing the ozone together –ozone: All there is between you and UV”. 12 students

participated in the event.



Gender Equality – Seminar

Department of BSc Mathematics organized a seminar on the topic “ Gender Equality” on 8th

January 2018 at BSC Mathematics classroom. The Head of the Department, Ms. Valentine D’cruz

interacted with MSc Mathematics Students. The students interacted very well and they enjoyed

the session very well. About 40 students participated in the programme.



Visit to ISRO – SPACE EXPO

The first year students of Chemistry department along with two faculty members visited the space

expo organised by ISRO Cochin on 6th March 2016. It helped them to gather elementary

knowledge about space science and their applications. The objective of the visit is to develop a

scientific aptitude in girls and to familiarise them with the various opportunities which could be

grabbed by them in the space field. 17 students participated in the event.

Salad Presentation Competition

A salad presentation competition was organised by the department of Chemistry for the open

course students in Food science as well as for chemistry students on 21st March 2016. Varieties of

healthy, easy to make, non-cooked salads were beautifully presented by the students. Total 32

students participated in the event.



Wall Magazine Competition

A wall magazine competition was held by Department of Chemistry in association with the

chemistry Club for girls as a part of World forest day on 21st March 2016. The objective of the

programme was to make them think about a solution to the deforestation all around the world in

their perspective. 20 students participated in the event.



Fabric Painting

Women Cell and Department of Economics organized a demo class on Fabric painting on 22nd

September 2016 at seminar hall, St. Paul’s College Kalamassery. Mrs. Usha,Kamal, Pidilite

Industries Limited, Fevicryl was the resource person and 20 students participated in the class.



What is the meaning of Gender Equality in the current Scenario?

Ms. Savitha K S gave a talk to the 1st Semester BSc Mathematics Students on the Topic ‘What is

the meaning of Gender Equality in the current Scenario’ on 26th October 2016 at the BSc

Mathematics Class. It was an open discussion forum and students came out with their viewpoints

as well.



Violence against Women

Ms. Regina Margret V J gave a talk on ‘Violence against Women’ to MSc Mathematics students

and presented a short film on the topic on 30th November 2016 at the 2nd MSc Mathematics Class.

The film depicted various kinds of violence which affects women both physically and mentally. It

was a beautiful film and the students could relate them to some of the incidents shown in the movie.



Legal Awareness Class

Women Empowerment Cell and department of Economics organized legal awareness class ‘Know

Your Rights’ on 1st February 2017 for female students of our college. The class was handled by

Adv. Vimal Menon and 40 students participated in the class.

Best Female Outgoing Student Award 2016-17

In connection with the International Women's Day, the women empowerment cell & Department

of Economics organized Best Female Outgoing Student Award 2016-17 on 8th March 2017. The

selection of a girl student who excels in academics and non-academic activities. Sony PR, final



year BA English (model I) bagged first prize. Tisha KS, III year B.com CA & Nimitha Nair III

BA English Model II were the first and second runner ups.15 students from various departments

took part in the competition.



Empowerment and Liberation – rethinking two overused concepts

In association with the Department of Economics, Women empowerment cell organized a seminar

on ‘Empowerment and liberation’- rethinking two overused concepts’ delivered by Dr. J Devika,

Associate professor, Centre for development studies, Trivandrum on 16th March 2017. It was an

intercollegiate programme. 50 students participated in the programme.



Vanitha Cover Girl contest 2017-18

Women Empowerment Cell and department of Economics coordinated the Vanitha Cover Girl

contest 2017 audition at St. Paul’s College on 6th July 2017. 15 students participated in the audition

and 3 students were selected.



Health and Hygiene

Dr. Pramada Ramachandran interacted with the BSc Mathematics students on the topic ‘Health

and Hygiene’ on 4th September 2017 at the Seminar Hall. The importance of personal hygiene,

that is maintaining body's cleanliness was discussed in the class. Some presentations were shown

in the class.

The role of education in removing gender inequality

Department of Computer science conducted a seminar on the topic “The role of education

in removing gender inequality” on October 4th 2017. The resource person for the day was

Sr. Neelima, Principal St Teresa's CGHSS Ekm, she conveys the idea by stating “If you educate a

man, you educate an individual. If you educate a woman, you educate a family.” And also gave an

idea of Women’s educational and occupational choices. From the department, 41 students were

participated. The student coordinators of the seminar were Daliya Lalu and Adrija N Saju. Anju

Sreenivas was the Faculty Co-ordinator.



Baking Class

On 9th December 2017, Department of Chemistry organised a one day baking class to give first-

hand experience in baking procedures to the girls of our college. Three different dishes – red velvet

cake, cinnamon rolls and white chocolate mud cake were included in the menu. Classes were

handled by an expertise personnel, Ms. Jeny Mathew, Tutor, Thomson Music House, Edapally.



Life Enrichment programme 2017-18

Women Empowerment Cell and Department of Economics organized a class on Life Enrichment

programme on December 12th 2017. The class focused on enrichment in one's life through proper

goal setting. Dr. Kochurani KJ, HOD, Economics BMC College Thrikkakara was the resource

person. 25 students participated in the programme.



Seminar on Gender Equality in Education

A Seminar on Gender Equality in Education was Organized by Department of Business

Administration, St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery on 10th January 2018 at the Seminar Hall. The

resource person for the Seminar was Adv. Jeena A.V. The Seminar highlighted the relevance of

Gender Equality in Education. The Seminar was attended by 60 students. Fr.Alias P George and

Dr.Joseph Job Chakkalakal were the faculty co-ordinators.



Health Awareness Class

The Women Empowerment Cell and Department of Economics organized a health awareness class

for students and teachers in association with Midtown Medical Centre Thrikakara on 15th January

2018. Healthy living styles, diet were discussed in the class. 20 students attended the programme.

Seminar on Cyber Crime against women

A Seminar on Cyber Crime against Women was organized by Department of Business

Administration, on Feb 19, 2018 at BBA Second year Class St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery. The

resource person for the Seminar was Adv. Vimal Kumar. The seminar focused on Cyber Crime

Against Women. The seminar focused on the fact that Cyber Crime is increasing at an alarming

rate and how cyber laws can prevent victimization against women.15 students participated in the

seminar.



International Women’s Day Celebration 2017-18

As a part of International Women’s day, Women Empowerment Cell and department of

Economics organized programmes like Elocution on ‘Press for progress’ and Quiz competition

on ‘Women Achievers’ on 8th March 2018. 25 students participated in the programme. Winners

were awarded with cash prize and mementos. Prof. Deepa George and Prof. Vimal Kumar were

the judges. Principal Dr. V.J Peter Inaugurated the function. Vice Principal Dr. Rose Philo

felicitated the function.



Cancer Awareness Class

Women Cell and Department of Economics coordinated the Breast Cancer Awareness class

“Sadgamaya” organized by Medical College, Kalamassery on 14th March 2018 at St.Paul’s

College, Kalamassery. Medical students of Govt.Medical College, Ernakulam led the session. 30

students participated in the programme.

Food Fest - “NELLIKA 2018

Students of department of Chemistry organised a food fest “NELLIKA 2018” on

27th September 2018 an enthralling assemblage of food, fun and entertainment. With

food stalls serving a variety of juices, rolls, stir fries, rice this fiesta created a

platform for the students especially for girls to showcase their culinary as well as

organisational skills. Students of Open course (Food Science) offered by the

department also took part in the food fest with stalls serving much-loved traditional

delicacies. 150 students participated in the event.



Workshop on Value Added Cleaning Products

A two day workshop on value added products has been conducted for UG and PG students by the

Department of Chemistry. The event took place at Chemistry lab on 1st February 2019. The

students made bathe soaps, floor cleaner, liquid dish wash, detergent powder, toilet cleaner,

Seminar on Gender Equality: An Introduction

A seminar on Gender Equality: An Introduction was conducted by Department of Commerce (SF)

on 16th October 2018 at Seminar Hall. Mr. Suneer, Course Consultant, TIME Institute, Kochi was

the resource person. This seminar mainly highlighted on the points of education of girls and

women-Opportunities and obstacles, Illustrated with suitable examples on the violence against

women and girls. The seminar aimed to create a strong awareness on equal access to power,

resources and opportunities for the girl students and be treated with dignity, respect and fairness.

This Programme also coined about how to approach, discuss and look for solutions to gender based

dilemmas, both realistic and theoretical. 38 students participated in the event.



Gender Trouble: Queer Politics in Everyday life

The department of English organized a talk on “Gender Trouble: Queer Politics in Everyday life”

on 7th January 2019. The resource person was Ms. Deepa George was the resource person. The

talk was intended to provide insights into multiple sexualities and the need to identify and give

space to people who belong to other sexualities.

"MEISI 2019": Think Equal, Build Smart, and Innovate for Change.

The coordinator, Dr. Salia Rex and AICUF members of St. Paul's college hosted the one day

seminar "MEISI" on March 9th, 2019 at St. Paul's college in commemoration with the International

Women's day. The theme of the seminar entitled "MEISI 2019" was: Think Equal, Build Smart,

and Innovate for Change. The Seminar was inaugurated by Mrs. Lida Jacob IAS and presided over

by the State AICUF coordinator Fr. Prince SJ., Prof. Monamma Kokkad delivered the keynote

address. Rev. Fr.FelixChakkalackal, manager of St. Paul's College was present during the event.

Three members of the non- teaching ladiesstaff of St. Paul's College:Mrs.Rosy, Mrs. Kunjumol

and Mrs.Mini were felicitated by Mrs.Lida Jacob, Fr. Prince SJ and Dr. Salia Rex One hundred

students from various colleges of Kerala participated in the seminar. The post lunch session was

chaired by Prof. Monammakokkad, who was the moderator for Paper presentations made by 20

students. The seminar concluded at 4 P.M.



Debate: Politics of the Body, Clothing and Gender Roles

The Department of English, St. Paul’s College Kalamassery has conducted a debate on the topic

‘Politics of the Body, Clothing and Gender Roles’ on 3rd September 2019 at 2nd year MA

Classroom. 12 students participated in the debate and they were divided into two groups. The aim

of the debate was to give an awareness about gender roles in the society. The students performed

their maximum and the programme was a huge success. It helped them to improve their critical

thinking and speaking skills.



International Girl Child Day

International Girl Child Day was observed by the Department of Economics on 11 October 2018.

The theme of International Day of the Girl Child 2018 was ‘A Skilled Girl force' which lays

emphasis on education and skill enhancement required for the girl child today so that she enters

the workforce fully skilled, up-to-date with the technology and digitalization, a decade from now.

The Department organized student’s discussion on the Theme ‘A skilled Girl force’. 20 students

participated in the programme.



Session on Hygiene Awareness for Girls

A Hygiene Awareness Class for girls of Department of Business Administration was taken

by Ms. Reshma Mariam Mohan, Faculty, Department of Business Administration, St. Paul’s

College on 9th December, 2019 at 3rd year BBA Classroom. Total of 35 girl students attended the

class.



Paper Bag Making

Department of Chemistry, in association with ENCON club of St.Paul’s College organised a paper

bag making sessions for girls on 28th July 2019. The main objective of the programme was to

strengthen the girls by developing an entrepreneurship skills. Girls from different classes along

with faculty attended the programme. 25 students participated in the event.



Health Awareness Seminar

Department of Economics organized a Health Awareness Seminar on 'Karkidakam- The season

of Rejuvenation' on 02/08/2019. The class was handled by Dr.Jyothy Jayan B.A.M.S,D.A.C.T ,

Sindu pharmacy,Varapuzha. 100 students participated in the programme.



Crimes against Women

Department of Computer science conducted a seminar on the topic “crime against women” on 5th

August 2019.The resource person for the day was Adv Vimal Kumar Senior Advocate ,Legal

Advisor High Court, Visiting Faculty, Kerala Police Academy

The seminar session includes “The Semantic meaning of crime against women-‟ that is direct or

indirect physical or mental cruelty to women. Crimes which are directed specifically against

women and in which only women are victims are characterized as Crime Against Women” and

also clarify the concept of Violence against women. Violence is also known as abuse and includes

any sort of physical aggression or misbehave. From department, 35 numbers of students were

participated. The coordinators of seminar were Nihala Fasal Ali (111rd year ) Devika C K (IInd

Year),Kukku Joy (Faculty)



Idea pitching on girl child empowerment

International Girl Child Day was observed by the Department of Economics on 11th October 2019.

The department conducted an interdepartmental competition, the ‘Idea pitching on

Girl’s/Women empowerment’. Ms. Asna T.A of II MA Economics secured the first prize and

Ms. Josphina Sona of II MA Economics bagged the second prize. 30 students participated in the

programme.



Seminar on Gender sensitization

IQAC, Department of Economics and Department of English jointly organized a one day seminar

on ‘Gender sensitization –Girls force Unscripted and Unstoppable’ on 18 October 2019. Dr. Molly

Kuruvila , Professor of Department of women’s studies was the resource person .77 students

participated in the programme.



Debate Competition on ‘Are Women Safe in India’?

The Department of English, St. Paul’s College Kalamassery has conducted a debate on the topic

‘Are Women Safe in India’? on 21st November 2019 at 1st year BA Classroom. The aim of the

debate was to make the students understand about the safety of women in the present scenario. The

session was a fruitful one. It helped the students to analyse the topic and helped them a lot to

evaluate their thinking capacity too.



Sale of Value added Products – Ladies Stall

Exhibition cum Sale of Valued added Products made by the students of under the guidance of the

faculty members was held on 18th December 2019. Scented candles and various cleansing products

like bathing soap, detergents, floor cleansing lotion and toilet cleaning liquids were sold in the

exhibition. The objective of the programme was to develop entrepreneurship skill among students.

20 students participated in the event.



Eco-friendly paper pens

Department of English, department of Economics and department of Mathematics along with

IQAC organized a workshop on making eco-friendly paper pens. The event took place on 7th

January 2020 at Seminar Hall. 25 students participated in the event.



Basics of Embroidery and Pattern Drafting

Associate Manager Rev. Fr. Joseph Palliparambil inaugurated a One month certificate course on

Basics of embroidery and pattern drafting organised by Department of Chemistry. The objective

of course is to impart skill development and women empowerment through a first-hand experience

in Embroidery and pattern drafting to the students and faculty of our college. Classes were held on

Saturdays by an expertise fashion designer, Ms. Nimmy Renny, The event was inaugurated on 1st

February 2020 and 20 students participated in the event.



Women and Periodic Table

The department of Chemistry organised IGNITE -commemorating of 150 of year of Periodic

Table, as part of which an Inter-department powerpoint competition with theme- Women and

periodic table was organized on 5th February 2020 at Seminar Hall. 12 students from various

departments participated. A talk on Evolution of Periodic Table was made by

Dr. P. Ananthapadmanabhan, Associate Professor (Retd), Maharajas College, Ernakulam.



Seminar on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment

Department of Commerce (SF) organized a Seminar on Gender Equality and Women

Empowerment on 12th February 2020 at Seminar Hall. Asst. Professor Remyamol KP was the

resource person. 45 students participated in the event. The seminar aimed to create a strong

awareness on Gender Equality concept among the students.



Awareness class on Legal Aspects of Ragging

Department of Chemistry, in association with Antiragging Cell organized a talk on ‘Legal Aspects

of Ragging’ on 14th February 2020 at 2 pm. Adv. Anzil K Salim was the resource person. He is an

alumnus of Department of Chemistry, St.Paul’s College.

National Science Day – 2020

A National Seminar on Materials for Optoelectronic Applications was organized by the Department of

Physics on 27th February 2020 as part of National Science Day celebrations. Dr. S. Jayalekshmi, Emeritus

Professor, Department of Physics, CUSAT was the keynote speaker. Dr. M. K. Jayaraj, Professor and Head,

Department of Physics, CUSAT also delivered a lecture in the forenoon session. In the afternoon there was

a paper presentation competition for research scholars and M.Phil. Students. The session ended with a

Valedictory session in which the Best Oral presentation and Special Mention awards as well as participation

certificates to all the speakers were distributed.



Workshop on Sanitizer Making

As part of Break the chain Campaign launched by Kerala Health ministry to curb the outbreak of

COVID-19, Department of Chemistry conducted a workshop for hand sanitiser making and

distributed to the Public as well as the to the entire staff of the college . The same was used by

students and faculty members appearing for university examination. The event took place on 13th

March 2020 and 20 students participated in the event.



Gender Sensitization Survey

A Gender Sensitization Survey was conducted by the Department of Physics in June 2020 on the

topic “Women Friendly workspace – Do you belong there? The survey was initiated as part of the

gender sensitization initiative of the Department of Physics in collaboration with the IQAC of St.

Paul’s College. Gender sensitization is essential to understand the sensitive needs of a particular



gender. Educational institutions are the best spaces for initiating such sensitization programmes

because they instill thought. Many organizations have initiated baby steps towards making work

spaces women- friendly by implementing stronger maternity leave policies, workplace safety etc.

Such sensitization programmes are essential to identify and address conscious or unconscious biases

that creep in to a workplace and the success of such programmes depend on the extent to which such

topics are exposed for discussion and remediation.



National Webinar on Gender Justice and Popular Advertisements

Office of Training and Development, Quality Assurance Center and Department of English Jointly

organized a national Webinar on Gender Justice and Popular Advertisements on 08th July 2020.

Dr.Smitha CR, Assistant Professor, Hindustan College of Arts and Science was the resource

person. Over 100 people including faculties and students of different colleges took part in the

webinar. The webinar gave an insight about gender justice as the full equality and equity between

women and men in all spheres of life. Many participants asked their questions regarding the

session, which make the session more interesting. As per the feedback received from the

participants it was truly an inspirational session.



Talk on “Gender and the Sciences through Hollywood”

As part of International Youth Day celebration, Department of Mathematics in association with

Equal Opportunity cell of St Paul’s College, Kalamassery organized a talk on Gender and the

sciences through Hollywood for science post graduate students of the college on 13th August 2020.

Dr. Pramada Ramachandran, Assistant Professor , Department of Mathematics, St Paul’s College,

Kalamassery was the speaker of the program. Around 55 participants were there including

teachers. Prof. Binil Kumar, Coordinator Equal Opportunity Cell welcomed the gathering and

Steema Francis of II MSc Mathematics had delivered vote of thanks. Feedback forms were

collected and E Certificates were given through mail.



National Level Online Quiz

In connection with the ‘World Entrepreneurship Day’, the department of Commerce with the

support of IEDC, Office of Training and Development Centre conducted a National Level Online

Quiz to inculcate a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the students, teachers and general

community at large. The event took place on 21st August 2020 and 167 participants have co-

operated with the quiz. The Quiz helped the participants to get awareness about the Entrepreneurial

Skills needed to start a new business.



Ozone Day Quiz

Department of Commerce and Nature Club organized an ‘OZONE DAY QUIZ’ for the students

of St. Paul’s College on 16th September 2020. The United Nations' (UN) International Day for the

Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16 every year. This event

commemorates the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the

Ozone Layer in 1987.The programme’s intention was to spread awareness regarding the depletion

of the ozone layer. The event took place on 16th September 2020 and 110 students participated in

the event.



Gender in Economics: Where we are and where next?

Department of Economics, St Paul's College, Kalamassery is organized an international webinar

in association with Kerala North Region, Xavier Board of Higher Education on Gender in

Economics: Where we are and where next? on 16th November 2020 at 3.30 PM. Dr. Neha Hui,

Lecturer in Economics, University of Reading, United Kingdom was the resource person. Her talk

was centred on the evolution of gender in the academic literature of Economics. 70 students

participated in the event.

Sports Activities of Women students

There is an international consensus WHO describes, that participation in physical activities can

offer a great deal to individuals, communities and nations. Evidence suggests that from an early

age, differences in gender-based attitudes towards and opportunities for sports and physical

activities can have a significant influence on children’s participation. This may, in turn, affect later

involvement in physically active lifestyles, and the social and health benefits that may result for

them.

Last NAAC visit in our institution also recommended more girl students participation. Taking that

in consideration the department of Physical Education of St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery set the

focus in creating equal opportunities for all students by including more women participation along

with male student’s participation in sports & games.

Women Cycling Team

The Department of Physical Education with the help of PTA contribution arranged 3 sports cycles

and started creating a Men & Women Cycling Team in our College and started practicing cycling

since 2018-19. During the first year though we didn’t succeed in getting a medal in M G University

but with active participation one athlete names Abhirami S of B A English who won a bronze

Medal in Kerala state Cycling championship and was selected to Kerala State Team who later

participated in the national Cycle Polo Championship.



During the year 2019-20, we were all set to give a strong competition in M G University Cycling

Championship. Along with boys team our College won the Overall Championship trophy in Boys

Section and Runner-Up position in the championship. The performance of girls team also

contributed in placing our college among the top. Abhirami S, of B A English along with Negha

Paul, Sayanora Saji of B A Economics and Jaysree of B. Voc Tourism were selected to Ernakulam

District team who later participated in the Kerala State Cycling Track Championship, Where

Negha Paul succeeded in winning a bronze medal.



Women Kabaddi Team

Since 2018, Department of Physical Education started developing Kabaddi Men & Women team

in our College; they started practicing cycling since 2018-19. Though these years we didn’t

succeed in getting a medal in M G University but with active participation and spirit women

Players are going well showing remarkable performance in Kabaddi. As these have no previous

history in performing sports and games, new strategies and fitness levels have to be attained.

Department of Physical Education considers it as an achievement to introduce new student’s sports

and games.

They participated in the MG University Inter collegiate Kabaddi Women Tournament conducted

on: 6-7 October 2018 & 17 -18 September 2019 at Government College, Nattakom & St. Joseph’s

College Moolamattam respectively.

Women Taekwondo Team

Department of Physical Education introduced a new game to the women players named

Taekwondo Women team in our College; they started practicing cycling since 2017-18. First year

Itself Miss Ashna sheen of B.Sc. Mathematics & Riya Richard of M. Sc. Chemistry (both karate

athletes was converted to taekwondo). Ashna Sheen won a silver medal in her life’s first try in

Taekwondo in the MG University Taekwondo Women Championship 2018-19 held at MES

College Marampilly. She also won the Ernakulam District Silver Medal held at St. Albert’s High



School Auditorium and a silver Medal in the M G university Inter-Collegiate Silver medal in the

year 2019-20 also held at St. Pauls College, kalamassery. With her Contribution St Paul’s College

won the Overall Championship in the year 2019-20 which was held at St Paul’s College,

Kalamassery.



Women Cricket Team

Department of Physical Education introduced Women Cricket Team players in the year 2019-20.

They participated in the MG University Women Cricket Tournament on 2019-20 which was held

at Marthoma College Thriuvalla and reached the Quarter-Final Stage. Some of these players

attended the Scorers & Umpires Seminar jointly conducted by Ernakulam District Cricket

Association & and Department of Physical Education and passed the test for Scoring and Umpiring

cricket matches in Ernakulam District level.

Department of Physical Education is focused to develop more teams especially in the Women

section to lift their level physically fit, mentally strong, socially uplifted and emotionally balanced

to reach more heights and honors in their life.
