A Great Start
Welcome back to Term 2. As usual, this will be a fast
paced term with plenty happening. The term will
culminate with the Bellingen excursion during week 10.
This is a tradition that has been alive for some 40 years
and is highly anticipated by all students. Mrs Liz
Saunders and the team are working hard bringing
everything together.
Ms Loughrey has put out information in relation to the
2018 Canada excursion. A meeting next Thursday 4th
May will be held in the library at 5.30pm for students
who have nominated they are going. All deposits will
need to be paid at this point. This is a great opportunity
and fundraising has started. Thank you to Ms Loughrey
and MegO for their organisation of the holiday stall at
IGA. A huge thank you to IGA for their support in
allowing us to hold the event.
There was a great turnout for the ANZAC day
ceremonies around our region by students from
Quirindi High School. Students attended a variety of
services and represented the school to an exceptional
standard.
On Monday, teachers attended the first of a number of
professional development days focused on our Visible
Learning journey. This goes hand in hand with the work
already completed and implemented on Assessment for
Learning. The aim of the professional learning is to
continue the AforL approach to learning. Students of
Quirindi High School are extremely lucky to have
teachers who are so committed to the continual
improvement of learning.
Week 3 will see students in Years 7 and 9 complete
their NAPLAN assessments. We have previously
distributed information to explain the new HSC
standards and the link with NAPLAN. Achieving a Band 8
in Numeracy, Reading and Writing in the year 9 NAPLAN
assessment will qualify students to receive a HSC. Those
students not receiving a Band 8 in these areas will need
to take specific literacy and numeracy tests to
qualify for the award of the HSC. Students will have the
years leading up to the HSC and 5 years after the HSC to
meet the standards so they can be awarded their HSC.

Visit to Liverpool Plains Shire Council Chambers
Last term year 11 and 12 Industrial Technology –
Multimedia (IDTM) visited the Shire Chambers in
Quirindi.
The purpose of the visit was to look at how the Shire
employees work with multimedia in their everyday jobs,
which was the subject of the IDTM assessments.
We were met by Kerry Kemprich, the HR Coordinator,
and taken into the Council Chambers where John
Harding the Information Services Manager introduced
us to the way that information is presented to workers
via the smart TV set up in the boardroom. All the
information shown to us is available to all shire
employees via their workstation computers, laptops
and iPads, keeping them all up to date and aware of
what is happening within other departments besides
their own. John also told us about how much has
changed during council meetings with Councillors now
having their own iPads to use instead of printed
materials.
Rod Batterham, the Water Services Manager was very
enthusiastic about how much things have changed for
the better now that multimedia is used. Rod told us
about how things used to be regarding his job and how
now everything is automated and controlled through
multimedia technology, saving resources and money.
We learnt how the water station pumps are controlled
and how the dams are automatically controlled to
release when sensors are triggered, instead of workers
having to physically be on site to manually operate the
machinery, which was how things used to be.
Students were very interested with the information
from the WHS Advisor, Noel O’Brien and his wealth of
knowledge. Workplace Health and Safety is one of the
major elements of any Industrial Technology area and
we were shown the procedures for safety of workers
out in the field. Employees working alone were
provided with a device worn on their wrist. These
devices were linked via radio channel to Mr O’Brien via
a mobile phone. The device can be used in emergencies
by pressing the SOS button, which would alert
emergency services. The radio technology allows exact
locations to be found and personnel assisted in a timely
manner. These devices also automatically trigger an
SOS alert if the worker should fall and the device
becomes parallel instead of vertical.
Students had all their questions answered and have
completed their assessments to a high standard, they
also remarked that they had learnt a lot about what the
council is doing, and looking through the council
website now enhanced their understanding and
appreciation.
We all would like to thank Kerry for taking so much of
her time in organising this and John, Rod and Noel, for
taking time out of their very busy schedules.

Year 12 Business Studies Excursion
On the Tuesday 14th of March 2017, Year 12 Business
Studies travelled from the bush to the city to explore
the operations and marketing components of their HSC
course. Students Sari Hamblin, Lydia Smith, Tyler Hearn
and Darrien Doyle connected with the modern chic, laid
back scene of Newcastle. Despite storms, torrential rain
and the reoccurring scene of umbrellas forcefully
blowing inside out under gale force winds, year 12
naturally had lots of fun together under the supervision
of HSIE head teacher, Mr Ian Packer and Careers
Advisor, Ms Kerri Saunders.
We stayed at the Travelodge near Honeysuckle, a highly
pristine area. Fortunately, an insight into the everyday
operations of a Hotel was provided by the charismatic
Hotel & Food and Beverage Manager. The Hotel
Manager plays a vital role in strengthening relationships
with consumers and maintaining a reputable
reputation.
Year 12 attended the AI Group office, a nationwide
Australian employer association advising clients how to
efficiently maintain and run their own business in
relation to operations and marketing stages. Together
with business professionals, we discussed business
scenarios in their boardroom.
The city is wonderful at night with lots of bustling
restaurants including the Queens Wharf Hotel where
we dined on Tuesday night. A rustic, casual vibe offering
gourmet food, especially the popular seafood range.
This was a great way to finish the day after having a
guided tour of the Knight’s stadium. Newcastle is
definitely a happening place.
