It’s February already!

I can’t believe we are half way through the year. We have so much left to do: quilts to finish before the photographing deadline for the QU Quilt Show on February 19th; items to make for the Boutique (our main AQU fundraiser); programs to attend; a re-treat to attend; friends to greet. We will be busy.

I would like to thank all the guild members who came to the community service work-shop on January 29th and especially Cindy for her organizing skills. A lot was accom-plished toward next year’s goal for quillos.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at our February meetings,

Lois

…...Programs - Vice President…..Elaine Stober For our February program our own Nancy Firestone will be giving a lecture entitled “Quilting and Thera-py.” Let’s show our support by attending our meeting for what I know will be a most interesting and in-spiring program. Signups continue until the end of February for the March 18th workshop given by Suzi Parron after her lec-ture entitled “Following the Barn Quilt Trail.” We will be creating our own painted quilt block. A detailed description of the class along with the supplies needed is included at the end of this newsletter. AQU class registration is $20 and the kit fee is $45 to be paid to the Instructor the day of the class. Contact Elaine at [email protected] to sign up.

…...Library Display …. Karen Hubachek

Please bring your Library Display quilts to the February meeting if you haven't already. We have room for a small number of larger quilts (no Queen or King size, please), but are hoping for a majority of smaller items, demonstrating a number of styles and techniques: modern, classic, reproduction, pieced, applique, ma-chine work, handwork, etc Libby Samuel will be collecting these quilts at the February meeting. If your name and phone number are not already on your quilt, she will have safety pins and tags so you can do it at the meeting.

…...Round Robin Challenge Janet Beyea

The next round of exchanges will be at our March meeting so you have plenty of time to create a wonder-ful round (or maybe you’ll be like me and wait until the last minute!). Don’t forget that we would like to have a display of previous Round Robin quilts in the 2020 quilt show. Also, please indicate that when regis-tering your quilt show entry. If you have any questions, please contact me at: Janet Beyea 858-335-7329 or [email protected]

…...Hospitality…..Sandra Carrillo & Libby Samuel

Our hostesses for the February 19th meeting are:

Nancy Hoskins

Elaine Stober

Nancy Firestone

Diane Epp

…..Community Service…..Cindy Pedder & Susan Kroner

Ten people came to the community service workshop on January 29th, and they worked like fiends to iron

and cut fabric for our hypothermia prevention quillos. We had enough strips and squares cut to make all

the quillo top kits we'll need for the year. Now we just need you to take the kits home and sew them to-

gether to make the quillo tops. The kits are simple and will take less than an hour to put together. So,

please pick up one or more at the next meeting and give a warm hug to someone who has lost their home.

And of course we continue to welcome all donations of infant, children or adult quilts for our other charity

quilt recipients.

…..Membership…...Carla Lounsbury

The 2019-2020 membership form is included in this newsletter. Our chapter is once again replacing the auction with voluntary donations. These donations are tax-deductible and make it possible to bring in top rated speakers. Please print out the form at the end of this newsletter, fill it in, and bring it with you – along with your check to our next meeting. If you live out of the area or will not be able to attend the meeting, you can mail the form and check to Carla Lounsbury, 2647 N. Powhatan St., Arlington, VA 22207. If you would like a membership card or a receipt for your donation, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

…...Education Bee …. Karen Hubachek

There was no Education Bee in January due to snow.

The demo at the February E-Bee will be English Paper Piecing, and will be given by Marty Bush. (Thank you, Marty!) Join us, especially if you haven’t looked at English paper piecing recently—it’s not just for your Grandmother's Flower Garden anymore. The time and place will be the usual: 10:00 a.m., Fel-lowship Hall, Sleepy Hollow Methodist Church.

…...Big QU Treasurer’s Report …...Nancy Moore

We are moving forward with the process of restructuring QU. The SCC has approved the establishment of the Annandale Chapter as "Quilters Unlimited - Annandale, LLC” effective 1/23/2020.

We have applied for a EIN (Employee Identification Number). This process should take 4-6 weeks. Once the EIN is received by Nancy Moore, Treasurer for Big QU, bank account signatories will need to go to the bank to close the existing account and transfer the funds to an account established with the new EIN.

It is estimated that the new EIN will be received late February or early March. 1) Anyone with an outstanding check, needs to cash the check ASAP 2) if a check needs to be written for something toward the end of February, it would be expedient for the recipient to cash it immediately. This will help to avoid any outstanding transactions, so it is a clean trans-fer.

…...QU Show Boutique …. Nancy Hoskins & Susan Kroner

Please consider making a few items for the quilt show boutique. It is a major source of the funds we use to pay for AQU programs, workshops, and the batting for our charity quilts. As you make items, remember that quality is important, as is the use of current fabric. Small items sell best, and variety is important. Pin-terest, quilting blogs, and quilting newsletters are good sources for ideas. Susan Kroner and Nancy Hoskins will be accepting items at each meeting. When you give us an item, please attach a tag with your name, the name of the item, and a suggested price. Our next boutique workshop will be April 29, 2020.

Thank you to all who have already contributed items. We appreciate your support.

…...Quilt Show Entries …. Marty Bush

Our final photography session for the 2020 QU Quilt Show is Wednesday, February 19, during our regular AQU meeting. Along with your quilt—which must be completely finished and include a hanging sleeve—bring a copy of your registration confirmation. At last count, our chapter has registered 30 quilts. Keep up the good work! To register: My strongest recommendation is to have ALL your information for each quilt in front of you be-fore you begin registering. I tried clicking on the back arrow and lost all the information I had previously entered. Some things to keep in mind: 1. Each of your quilts will be entered one at a time. For each entry, you will receive an email confirma-tion that will contain the quilt number, quilt name, and quilt size. Print out two copies of this email—one for yourself and one to turn in when the quilt is photographed. YOUR QUILT CANNOT BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITHOUT A COPY OF THIS EMAIL.

2. You may enter up to five quilts. 3. Be sure to double check all your spelling and grammar in your artist statement. Evidently, there was a problem last year. This statement goes directly on the signage. 4. Measure your quilts carefully. Note that item #12 on the registration form is height and #13 is width. Be sure not to switch them. 5. Items #14-18 are very important. If you used a pattern designed by someone else, give that person credit. If you know the name of the designer of the quilting pattern, give that person credit. 6. As in the past, all quilts must be completed—bound and with a sleeve—before they can be photographed.

To register your quilts, go to https://quiltersunlimited.org/quilt-show/ and click on the registration button. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected].

…...Minutes of Jan 2020 AQU Meeting…..Libby Samuel, Secretary

President: Lois Beach opened the meeting in the Sleepy Hollow UMC sanctuary due to a lack of heat in the main fellow-ship hall. Vice President: Elaine announced that the January program would be given by Lisa Ellis and thanked her for her flexibility in agreeing to reschedule from April. Secretary: The minutes from the December meeting were accepted with the correction that Suzi Parron’s barn quilt lecture and workshop are scheduled for March not February as noted in the minutes. Treasurer: The checks from the fall retreat have been found. A corrected AQU treasury balance will be an-nounced in February. Committee Reports

Education Bee: As the January Education Bee was cancelled due to the FCPS closure Marty Bush will demon-strate English paper piecing at February’s E-Bee. Community Service: A community service workshop has been scheduled for January 29th, the fifth Wednes-day of the month, at Sleep Hollow UMC. The purpose of the day will be to create quillo top kits. Quilt Retreat: The spring AQU 2020 retreat will be held April 23-26, 2020. AQU has the large room and so there will be lots of room to spread out. Round Robin: The first round of blocks were exchanged; the next round is due at the March business meeting. March Library Display: Libby Samuel will collect quilts at the February meeting for Karen Hubachek. Please remember that quilts no larger than 24” square are preferred for the library display. Quilt Show: The QU Quilt Show class schedule will be announced shortly. Also, please send ideas for possi-ble new vendors to Carla or Ellen. There was a mix up with the quilt show photographer and she did not come to the January 15th meeting. Marty will let the membership know if the photographer can attend our community service day on January 29th. The photographer is definitely scheduled for our February 19th business meeting. Nancy and Susan are creating a spreadsheet of what has been collected so far for the quilt show boutique.

Please remember to include your name and suggested pricing when turning in Boutique items.

Other business: .

Big QU is restructuring to bring the organization into compliance with tax laws and QU’s tax exempt status. Each chapter will continue to have their own by-laws and fundraisers (although the fundraisers will be lim-ited to 3 annually). Big QU will publish guidelines when the restructuring is complete. The Accuquilt machine, mats and dies have been stored in the closet of the SHUMC main hall, to make the system more accessible to all members. . Respectfully submitted,

Libby Samuel, secretary, Annandale QU

Barn Quilt Painting Workshop with Suzi Parron Join the barn quilt movement by creating your own painted quilt block. You will begin with a pre-primed board and go through each step—drafting, taping, and painting, with careful attention to detail. The workshop lasts about 4 hours.

You will leave with a finished quilt block or with one last color (which will be provided) to add at home. Ready for show and tell at your next meeting! The finished product will be two-by-two feet and is the perfect size for mounting on smaller buildings.

Supplies provided: ~Pre-primed 2 by 2 foot board. The priming is a two-day job, which is already done for you!

~Suggested patterns ready to transfer (you may bring your own, but keep it simple— and be ready to draw it onto the board)

~Paint

~Foam brushes ~Colored pencils and other tools

Supply List: Painter’s tape--partial roll or two can share. Yellow or green “Frog

tape” brand is best, but blue Scotch brand is fine.

Yardstick or 24-inch Ruler Pencil Blow dryer for every 3-4 people Coverings for tables (host organization usually provides)

Minimum 10, maximum 30 participants per class.

Labeling your Quilt for the Show

In addition to your signature label, your quilt will need a temporary label (lower right corner at the back of the quilt) with the information below for the quilt collectors. This label and the hanging sleeve above can be made with muslin. The same information will need to be on each entry's bag. In both cases, the quilt label and the label/info on the bag should be written in permanent black ink and legible. The label on the bag should be near the opening of the bag. This makes it easier to match-up the bag and quilt during the takedown process.

1. Name of the quilt you used on the entry form 2. Your Name 3. Your telephone number 4. Chapter

What Information Goes on a Permanent Signature Label?

You should label all of your quilts. It is an historic record of your quilt. What information you put on your permanent signature label is up to you, but some of the information you should consider including are:

1. The name of the quilt 2. Who made the quilt (who pieced it and who quilted it, if different) 3. Where the quilt was made (City and State) 4. When the quilt was made

You can also include information on

5. Type of quilt (civil war reproduction, modern, wholecloth, etc.) 6. Sentiments 7. Photos

If you are making a label for a baby quilt how about including

8. Name of the child 9. The child’s date and place of birth 10. Names of the child’s parents 11. Your relationship to the child 12. The special occasion for the quilt (e.g., birth, christening, first birthday,

etc.)

How to Make a Quilt Sleeve

The hanging sleeve for your quilt does not need to be a permanent hanging sleeve. If, however, you put a temporary sleeve over a permanent sleeve (for instance, if the show sleeve needs to be wider than the permanent sleeve), be sure that the permanent sleeve is completely covered.

Cut a 10"-wide strip of washed muslin or cotton fabric, making it 1" shorter than top edge of quilt. Turn under and press 1/4" at each short end, then turn and press again (Diagram I). Stitch in place.

With wrong sides together, stitch long edges together 1/2" from raw edges (Diagram II). Baste the long folded edge loosely, 1/2" from edge.

Roll the seam to the middle of one side, and place this side against the quilt backing. Press open or to one side; doesn’t matter. The basted seam should be away from the quilt, opposite to the stitched seam.

Slipstitch the top edge of the tube to the quilt backing about 1" below the inner edge of the binding and the lower edge of sleeve flat to the quilt backing, catching only the lower layer of sleeve. Remove the basting so the front of the hanging sleeve is a little larger than the side which has been slip stitched to the backing. This excess will be taken up by the pole, allowing your quilt to hang smoothly without a ripple at the top. If you like, write your name, address and phone number on this hanging sleeve in permanent ink.
