Doss Heritage Display – entries are due in by the end of August. This is a chance for our guild to be highly visible from Decem-ber – February, and we want them to have a wonderful variety of quilts to pick from, so choose 2-3 quilts, take pictures of each of them, fill out the entry form, and mail it in. You can do it!

2017 Raffle Quilt ticket sales – have you sold your packet of raffle tickets and turned them in? Our Raffle Quilt is one of our main fund raisers for the year, and makes it possible to promote quilting in the community, and give back to the community. Each guild member should sell at least one packet of tickets – even if it’s to yourself! Get those tickets turned in to Beverly Lindsey, and pick up more while you’re at it!

And best of all, I just found out that my next grandchild, due around Christmas, will be a girl! Whoo hoo – time for frills and lace! Got to get a quilt made for the little princess!

Okay, now I feel better – but ya’ll have a lot of work to do! See you at the August meeting! Hot today, chili tomorrow! Spice it up! Marsha Corlley, President

August -- Myra Hall and Cynda Ewing, Quilt Stitch and Sew

Program: “Adventures in a Quilt Business”. Myra and Cynda will present their adventures in quilt pattern de-signing and starting a quilt related business. They will entertain you with a vast array of quilts and quilting pro-jects as they relive “dos and don’ts” from nine years of experiences of being business partners, pattern designers, and vendors at quilt shows.

Their workshop “Yikes Stripes” was held in May so no workshop in August.

Schoolhouse Demonstration – Mary Williams will demonstrate how to make several “disappearing” quilt blocks.

September – Quilt Auction

Turn in your quilts of all sizes and your donations for the Dollar Raffle and Take It for Ten to Lynn Main by La-bor Day, September 4. And then bring your friends and family to the Auction on September 21 at the North Side Baptist Church Gymnasium, and join in the fun!

Mary Williams will collect quilts during August when Lynn will be on vacation.

There will be no workshop in September.

Program: “Midnight in the Garden of Applique”. Kathy is an international appliqué teacher, lecturer and de-signer. She, along with her mother JoAnn Hudgins, founded the Kathy Dunigan Academy of Applique in 2015 in Rockwall, Texas. Her appliqué work blends “all things Baltimore” with the lush and rich fauna of the Deep South. She never hesitates to “embellish, enliven and embolden” her appliqué. “Anything goes, if it makes your heart beat faster!” she excitedly proclaims.

No workshop in October.

November – Rosie de Leon McCrady

Program: “Redwork Through the Years”. This lecture includes a history of Redwork as well as a wide variety of Redwork quilts, both vintage and new. She brings many quilts as quilters love to view all kinds of quilts, some are over 100 years old. The lecture includes a brief background of the company as well as how "The String Thing®" and perle cotton now play an integral part of Rosie’s life. At the end of the trunk show, Rosie shares her personal tips, techniques and favorite supplies for successful Redwork stitching.

Workshop (Friday, Nov. 17, North Side Baptist Church, 910 N. Main St.): “Redwork Embroidery”. You will learn the basics of redwork embroidery. Discussion centers on what supplies to have and what stitches are used. Rosie will demonstrate the stitches. A kit will be available for $25.

Doss Heritage Center Exhibit

QGPC is partnering with the Doss Heritage Center for an exhibit that tells the stories of quilting and the Quilt Guild of Parker County. The exhibit is December 2017 through February 2018 and will feature antique quilts from a variety of geographic locations and recent quilts made by members of the QGPC and/or residents of Parker County. This activity supports our mission to preserve the art of quilt making, stimulate interest in quilts and quilt making, assist community in quilt making, and educate through instruction and fellowship. To share an antique quilt or a recent quilt, please complete and submit the Call for Artifacts form (with photo of quilt) by the end of August. The form is included in this newsletter. Forms with photos may be emailed to [email protected], given to the receptionist at the Doss Center, mailed to the Doss Center, or given to Shirley Reagan at a QGPC meeting. On December 9, 2017, during the Heritage Christmas Tour of Homes Event, the Doss Center will feature the QGPC as guild members share quilt-making demonstrations from noon to 7 pm. Demonstrations will in-clude activities such as yo-yos, English paper piecing, rotary cutting, hand quilting, and machine piecing. At our last meeting, numerous members volunteered to assist with demonstrations; however, more volunteers are needed for the afternoon of December 9. A time schedule for those who wish to volunteer will be provided at the August Guild meeting.

Mission

The Mission of the Guild is to preserve the art of quilt making and stimulate interest in Quilts. The Guild provides assistance to the community in areas concerning the art of quilting. The Guild strives to educate its members and the public by provid-ing instruction and fellowship for persons interested in quilting. The Quilter’s Guild of Parker County is a 501c3 non-profit organization, a publicly supported, membership organization com-posed of individuals who share a common goal for which the organization was created. Members actively participate in achieving the organization’s mission through community service. We are financially supported by dues, private donations, a Quilt Auction, a Quilt Show and a Raffle Quilt.

Quilting Bees

Quilting Bees are very much a part of American history. Women would gather in their homes and invite their neighbors to help baste and quilt a top, perhaps all in one day. The Quilting Bee was an important part of their social lives during times when communications were limited. Today, the Quilting Bee is still an important part of how quilters connect with each oth-er in order to stimulate creativity, socialize and help each other complete projects. The Guild has several active Bees and a Beekeeper who can assist members in finding or starting a Bee. There are day, evening and weekend Bees available. Don’t miss out! Come and join the fun!

Community Service

The Quilter’s Guild of Parker County works to raise funds to support local charities both in distribution of funds as well as quilts through the Comfort Quilt Program. A handmade quilt is an expression of love and caring in the form of a “security blanket” offered in a time of need in a per-son’s life. Our Guild members work individually and as a group through the Comfort Quilt Program to provide quilts for vari-ous charitable organizations in Parker County. Each year the Guild sets aside at least one meeting in order to have a group “sew-in” to assist in making these quilts in addition to monthly opportunities for participation. Members have the opportunity to participate in Guild activities which are interactive with the Parker County community. Past events include Weatherford Blooms, Shaw Kemp Gathering, Parker County Peach Festival, Spring Creek Festival and the Cowboy Gathering. The Guild Quilt Show and Quilt Auction are the Guild’s two largest events.
