What is a Questionnaire?List of pre-set questions used to measure attitudes, opinions and behaviours.A questionnaires has two parts:A statement of ConfidentialityThe Written Questions
Statement of Confidentiality
Also Known as a Non-Disclosure Agreement
It is a legal document used by organizations and individuals to protect information and privacy.
It lets the person filling out the questionnaire know that the information that he/she is providing will only be used for the purpose stated and for no other purpose without the consent of the disclosing party.
The Written Questions
Questions asked should:be clearly and specifically stated to avoid vagueness and ambiguity.
be constructed with the respondents intellectual ability in mind. There is no sense in constructing a questionnaire that sounds nice but is not understood by respondents.
be logically and sequentially presented to the respondents whether in written or verbal form.
Not require more than a single response. Questions requiring multiple responses (double-barred questions) tend to confuse respondents.
Types of Questions
All questions that a researcher can ask may be placed in two categories:
Open-Ended
Closed-Ended
Open-ended Questions
There are two main kinds of open-ended questions: The short answer questionThe essay type question
The short answer type question allows respondents to answer to their judgment and preference. The answer may run anywhere from a single line to a couple of lines.
The essay type question can offer valuable insights into a respondents thinking and views on a range of issues including his or her view of self.
Closed-Ended Questions
The most common types of close-ended questions include:True or False/Yes or NoMatching or AssociationMultiple choice
The True or False/ Yes or No type question is ideal for capturing precise or specific information since the answer must be selected on an either /or basis. This type of question eliminates extraneous information or discussion. Matching or Association involves two lists or categories and respondents have to show the association between them. This type of question is useful for establishing relationships between variables.
Advantages and Disadvantages Using A Real Life Situation
Advantages of a Questionnaire
They are usually easy to administer. It has the ability to reach a large audience in a short amount of time.
It is not costly to produce a large number of questionnaires. They are generally the cheapest research method.
The data can be easily tabulated, measured and analyzed.
Disadvantages of a QuestionnaireRespondents left on their own may not be concerned about the questions. They may provide erroneous information, or treat issues too lightly.
Incorrect wording of questions may generate misunderstanding /misinterpretation with respondents.
Fixed-choice questionnaire may force a respondent to choose an answer that does not quite capture his/her feelings about an issue.
