On the following pages you will find a series of statements relating to twelve areas identified as key for career transition. For each statement, tick the box that closest applies to your situation. These statements have been devised to prompt reflection and discussion of the main points in any transition and will introduce to you to some of the key things to consider.

Answer the statements as truthfully as possible. If you agree fully with the statement, tick the box marked “++”. If you completely disagree with the statement, tick the box marked “--.” Boxes “+” and “-” are for when you agree or disagree but less intensely. If you are unsure of how you feel, use the box “+/-.” There’s no scoring of final results, and this is intentional. The most important result is that you start thinking about your situation and what you can do now.

If you are not sure what to score, put down your best estimate. When answering, highlight any statement that seems particularly important to you at this time. Once you have answered everything, these highlighted statements will provide a good starting point.

I am totally dedicated to my sport to the exclusion of all else.

All my friends are athletes.

I will feel lost when I have to stop competing.

I will miss the recognition and attention of the public and media when I retire.

I will be sad at the end of my sporting career.

Being an athlete is who I am.

Athletic Identity:

If most of your replies are in agreement with the statements, start looking at the exercises in the workbook “Athletic Identity”.
