QLS Symposium 2013 is the flagship event of Queensland Law Society and I am delighted to invite you to participate and stay connected with colleagues in your professional body.

Each year, we aim to bring you a program that is relevant, diverse and practical so that you find the two days a professionally stimulating and personally valuable experience. In 2013, we have responded to your previous feedback on the conference structure, sessions and presenters. We hope that these changes increase your positive perceptions of the QLS Symposium 2013 and, once again, we look forward to receiving your feedback.

The past 12 months has seen a major change in the structure of the profession and we know that our members face challenges in practice and as professionals. We chose the challenge of change as the underpinning theme for the conference and we aim to provide you with opportunities to meet your own challenges through legal education, business outlook sessions, and professional skills workshops.

Key highlights of this program include:

• An opening plenary, led by local experts and global thought leaders, which highlights the challenges and issues which Australia in the Asian Century indicates we face as a profession and a nation.

• A view on Australia’s engagement in the Asia Pacific region from professional colleagues from Indonesia, Hong Kong and Korea. Beeom-Soo Kim (Korea), Tony Budidjaja (Indonesia) and Lester Huang (Hong Kong) are recognised experts in their different jurisdictions and practice area and will provide a truly global perspective.

• A presentation from Dr Chris Caton, BT Financial Group’s long-time chief economist, will expand on the economic predictors for Queensland to 2018 and how these apply to legal practice.

• Extensive CLE sessions for senior practitioners, both workshop and lecture format, in major areas of Accredited Specialisation, will be presented by outstanding Queensland Accredited Specialists.

• An afternoon of targeted sessions to meet every practitioner’s requirement for core CPD areas in practice from managing complex legal matters, profitable pricing and increasing productivity to the development of professional skills in coaching for performance, client communication and legal ethics.

• A special Symposium breakfast, held in partnership with Women Lawyers Association of Queensland, featuring Thérèse Rein as keynote speaker. Thérèse is a significant Australian business leader and in 2012 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Griffith University for her services to business. She was also Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year and was the first woman to receive the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Champion Award – Northern Region.

• Opportunities to learn more about building resilience and improving well-being in your own practice.

• More occasions to network with friends and colleagues, including at Symposium by Night, an informal cocktail event which marks the close of the first day and is included as part of the two day package.

President’s invitationContents

We sincerely appreciate the support of our sponsors and value the opportunity to partner with them in producing QLS Symposium 2013. Their support means that we can provide you with a local professional experience with global experts. I would like to thank our committees and presenters who have once again made a priceless contribution to the Society and the legal profession in developing the program and ensuring its content and delivery is world-class.

On behalf of the Queensland Law Society Council, I encourage you to approach me and my fellow Councillors over the two days of Symposium in order to provide feedback regarding the program or to discuss any other issues you would like to raise.

Yours sincerely

Annette Bradfield President, Queensland Law Society
