We take this opportunity to thank the members of the Steering Committee; Linda Doub and Karen Wimsatt for co-chairing the luncheon, as well as Jack Doub for stepping in as MC; Pat Bowell for entering hours, Marty Appeal and Pete Gerdom for helping at the KI
farmers market; the Dorchester MGs would like to thank Linda Doub for coordinating the 2012 internship training. As always, thanks is due to all of you, but if we missed a deserved thank you or if you wish to express your appreciation to someone, please let Hilary know and it shall be acknowledged in the next newsletter.
Thanks To:
Hilary Ennis,
Master Gardener
Coordinator
Over the past seven weeks I have had the opportunity to really start to learn about my new position. Going to meetings as well as hearing from Master Gardeners and other coordinators has been very helpful! I still have a lot to learn and I’m sure I will learn a lot when the home horticulture side of my job picks up pace in the spring. It was wonderful to get to meet more of the Master Gardeners at the annual holiday luncheon. Thanks to everyone who worked to make it a success. It came together nicely and was a pleasure. I loved observing that Karen was the only one who was surprised when she was named Master Gardener of the Year! Congratulations to Karen, Pat and Pete (see page 3). I hope everyone is having a good start to the new year! Hilary Ennis

The D. Landreth Seed Company is America’s oldest seed
house and fourth oldest corporation. Founded in 1784 in
Philadelphia, Landreth is credited with introducing Zinnias,
the white potato, and several varieties of tomatoes to
Americans. This historic company’s patrons have included
every president from George Washington to Franklin D.
Roosevelt (and the Obama’s vegetable garden now includes
Landreth seeds). But this seed company didn’t change with
the times and was starting to be forgotten. That was until
2003, when Barbara Melera, a former venture capitalist,
and her husband fell in love with Landreth’s history and
bought the company with hopes of saving it.
Barbara Melera will be the speaker at our January meeting.

Program News
The Queen Anne’s County Master Gardeners celebrated 2012 with their annual Holiday Luncheon at
Prospect Bay Country Club on Wednesday, December 12th.
Karen Wimsatt was recognized at Master Gardener of the Year for 2012. A member of the 2004 class,
Karen is an extremely active MG who is a Steering Committee member , a recurring meeting hostess, and has
done so much for the annual Garden Affair. This year she started “Ask a Master Gardener” at the Kent Island
Farmers Market and worked with the interns. Karen frequently writes articles for newspapers and does a won-
derful job of informing the community about QACMG programs.
Because two interns stood out as being so active Pete Gerdom and Pat Gannon were both named Master
Gardener Intern of the Year for 2012. Pete Gerdom and Pat Gannon both jumped right in and did a ton of work!
The two helped with the rain garden and demo-garden clean up efforts. They also assisted with Garden Affair,
the booth at the county fair, and other events. Pete has been active at the farmers market booth and plant clinics.
Pat has been willing to help with practically anything.
Shelia Shorter was presented with a salad box (made by Joe Jelich) to thank her for all the extra work
she put in to assist the MGs in the absence of a coordinator.

A GARDEN AFFAIR 2013 Saturday, May 4th, 10 am to 2 pm
Centreville Attention QAC MGs . . . Garden Affair 2013 is on! We have found co-chairs for the event and planning has begun for our annual tribute to the advent of the growing season. The event will be held on Saturday, May 4th, at the QAC Library/Wright’s Chance grounds in Centreville. You are invited to join the Garden Affair Committee to bring fresh ideas and help plan and execute our signature event of the year. The Committee will meet on the following dates at 9:30 a.m. in the meeting room at the extension office:
Monday, Jan. 14 Monday, Feb. 11 Monday, Mar. 11 Monday Apr. 8 Monday, May 13 (post-event recap)
MG interns are especially encouraged to participate as a means of logging required hours and getting to understand the MG organization. We have many volunteers already signed up for various activities, but additional volunteers are needed to serve as Greeters, and to help with face painting, photography, set up and take down, and display development for the various tables. We will also need your support for bake sale, plant sale, and Green Elephant sale. If you have questions or want to volunteer contact one of the co-chairs, Jim Persels or Carol Jelich, or simply come to the next Garden Affair Committee meeting. We look forward to working with you to make this year’s Garden Affair the best yet.
- Submitted by Jim Persels and Carol Jelich
As you peruse the latest seed catalogues and consider your gardening plans for spring, make
your plans to support our Garden Affair plant sale with donations of healthy non-invasive plants
from your garden. Last year, the plant sale was exceptional. The donated plants were widely varied
and well presented. As a result, our sale was financially the most successful so far. We hope to do as
well again this year.
With the earlier date of May 4 this year, many patrons will still be looking for vegetable, an-
nual, and herb plants that you can start growing at home this winter. When you divide and pot per-
ennials from your garden, you won’t have to keep them watered for so long before the early May
plant sale. As you spring clean your garage and shed, be sure to save those gently used items for the
Green
Elephant sale. Your donations for the plant and Green Elephant sales are the keys to our success.
Have a happy New Year in your garden! —Submitted by Jane Smith
