Tom Prosen Inducted Into

Minnesota Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Mr. Tom Prosen, who was inducted

into the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame on

Saturday, March 5. Coach Prosen is one of the most

energetic and enthusiastic teacher and coach ever seen

by Region 7.

Tom has been coaching tennis since 1971 and retired after the 2010 boys

season. He had a 10 year break while working with a computer

programming company in New York. Since 1990 he has either been head

or assistant coach in both the boys and girls programs at Eveleth-Gilbert

Public Schools.

Tom has achieved 330 varsity victories in his career with the boys’ and

girls’ teams. During his tenure as tennis coach, he has advanced three

boys’ teams to the sate tournament, two in Gilbert and one in Eveleth.

Coach Prosen has also advanced numerous individuals throughout his

career. Tom has won two Region 7 “Coach of the Year” awards and was

recognized in the “Who’s Who of American Teachers” both in 1998 and in

2010/ Tom is so well liked, that this past summer he was even chosen as

the 2010 Grand Marshall of the Gilbert 4th of July Parade.

Region 7 coaches and the students and athletes of both Gilbert and

Eveleth will always have a soft spot in their heart because of the

dedication Mr. Prosen has provided to the communities of Gilbert and

Eveleth over the past 30 years.

-By DONNA WALLS, Knowledge Bowl Coach

The Eveleth-

Knowledge Bowl

teams had a

wonderful

season again this

year. Every meet

would bring a

first place victory

over the other 23 teams they would compete

against on those days. Overall, for each month, the

Eveleth-Gilbert #1 team would be in the top 3 of all

of the teams that compete for the month (about

120 teams).

Unfortunately, the season came to an end at the

section meet by a very close,

disappointing loss. Going into the final round, the

team was seated 4th

out of 24 and needed to be in

the top three to go to state. They narrowly missed

it as the second and third place teams had scores

of 101.5 and Eveleth-Gilbert only had a score of

101—a half a point difference! Two International

Falls teams and one of Mesabi East’s teams were

the ones moving on to state. Overall, however,

Mrs. Walls was very impressed with her teams and

the hard work that they continually show all year

and wish luck to the teams moving on to state.

We have completed three

quarters of the 2010 – 2011

school year and we have one

exciting quarter to go. I would

like to thank staff, students,

parents, and community mem-

bers that have helped this year

go so well for everyone.

We had a very successful “I Love to Read Month” celebration

during the month of February. The Gilbert PTA and the teachers

at the Nelle Shean worked very hard to make it fun and

successful for students and parents. During the month of

February the theme was “Carnival: Your Ticket to Read”. The

students participated in dress up days, the carnival snow day,

book talks, an ice cream social, a magic act talent show and the I

love to read month Carnival held after school at the end of the

month. We had a great turn out for the read and feed for

parents to come to school and have lunch with their student.

I want to thank the staff, students, parents, and the PTA

members that worked so hard to make this such a success. The

students even had a chance to decorate their principal with 10

cream pies. It was sticky but fun.

We have also celebrated two hockey teams earning a spot in

their respective State Tournaments. The Eveleth – Gilbert Area

Girls hockey team and the boys Bantam team both made an

appearance at the state tournament this year. Congratulations

to both.

As we look forward to the last quarter of the 2010 – 2011 school

year, don’t forget to check out the updated website for district

information. Also, don’t hesitate to email your teachers with

questions or concerns. You can access the teacher’s email

through the PowerSchool link on the district web page. If you

don’t have a login or password to access PowerSchool, you can

come into the office and they will be provided to you.

We are looking forward to a wonderful spring quarter. Please

continue to stop by and see what’s happening in our

school. Thank you for your continued support and efforts to

help make our schools the best they can be for our students and

our communities.

This past fall, a

number of Frank-

lin staff members

were discussing

the possibility of

establishing a

community of learners that would meet regularly

to discuss challenges, support new ideas, and share

strategies. Studies have demonstrated that schools

and districts that promote strong professional

learning communities enable teachers to respond

more successfully to the needs of their students,

and the sense of a professional school community

enhances student achievement.

In January, the Teaching Essentials Learning Group,

a diverse group of 17 district staff members met for

the 1st

time to discuss the book, Teaching Essentials

by Reggie Routman. They now meet on a regular

basis (2x per month) to continue discussing chap-

ters of the book, share ideas, and collaborate. All

meeting minutes and book discussion notes are

emailed to all district staff. Any staff member is

welcomed to join in for professional conversation

and collaboration.

NEWS FROM THE FRANKLIN

-By LYNN BOL, Principal

During the 2009-2010 school year,

the Franklin Elementary worked

diligently at making positive

changes in our school. As we made

these changes and reflected on our

growth we worked through the

Minnesota School of Excellence

Application, which promotes excel-

lence through a rigorous evaluation process that show-

cases dynamic schools of the 21st

century.

The Minnesota Elementary School Principals’

Association (MESPA) developed this research-based pro-

gram aligned with national standards in:

leadership, vision, student learning, the culture of adult

learning, data and decision-making, and

community engagement. This school improvement proc-

ess is recognized by the Minnesota Department of Edu-

cation and the National Association of

Elementary School Principals. It involves a

systematic program of self-study, development of a

school improvement plan, and implementation of the

plan based on demonstrated results.

This fall, we were informed that we would be

honored as a Minnesota School of Excellence at the an-

nual MESPA convention in February, and we will be host-

ing a celebration of our own on Friday, April 29, 2011.

As the Franklin Elementary plans for this school and

community celebration, we are looking to make this a

memorable event for all. We plan to have a

Student Activity Fair during the morning, and at 1:30 PM

in the new gym we will have our School of Excellence

Program. All parents and community members are wel-

come to attend the event.

As we look at the remaining time of the 2010-11 school

year we have it filled with state testing, field trips, and

spring activities. Before we know it June will be here,

and our Franklin students will be

looking forward to some summer fun!

Franklin Elementary Celebrates

“I Love To Read Month””

February was I LOVE TO READ MONTH at the Franklin

Elementary and the students and staff were busy with reading

activities throughout the month. The theme for this year was a

carnival, and we had the students created door banners for

their classroom, and participate in a book cover making

contest. The classes did Buddy Reading with a different grade

level, and they took turns reading or reciting daily over the

intercom. We had a magician perform his

“Magic of Reading Program” and culminated the month with a

day of carnival activity for all students and staff to enjoy.

A Great Big Thank you goes out to Miss Lautigar and her 5th

grade students for planning and organizing the month long

event, another thank you to all of the senior high students that

helped work at the carnival, and to the PTA for

volunteering their time and making the popcorn.

Why do we have I Love to Read Month? We have I Love to Read month in order to

get the kids motivated to read just a little bit more than they usually do. We find

that by using the extra motivation, it gets the students hooked on reading, which

carries through to the end of the year, through summer, and into the start of the

new year. It also allows us to add a little fun, competition, and laughter into our

normal day! Great effort by everyone involved.

The totals for this year were…

Carnival, Your Ticket To Read at Nelle Shean Elementary

Nelle Shean Elementary celebrated I Love To Read month during the month of February. This years

theme was “Carnival, Your Ticket To Read”. Each class chose a carnival act and if their class read the

most books or had the most Accelerated Reader points at the end of the week, they were able to take

their “Show On The Road” and perform their act accompanied by carnival music. Some of the carnival

acts included: acrobats, stilt walkers, strong men, fortune tellers, face painters, and jugglers.

The Gilbert PTA held a book fair during the month and invited parents to come

and have lunch with their children before visiting the book fair. The PTA also

rewarded students with an ice cream social on February 28.

Gilbert Public Librarian, Nick Prieve visited the school and spoke with

students about the importance of reading and showed students several

samples of books that were available at the public library. A Magic Act

Talent show was held on February 18th. Students performed magic tricks for

fellow students. There were some great acts. Mr. Ufford even brought his giant boa constrictor and

the students were amazed! On February 25th the PTA and teachers stayed afterschool and put on a

wonderful carnival for all students and their families.

At the end of the month, an award ceremony was held to recognize the top readers of the month. The top readers in the

entire school were: Grades K-2; Nestor Rova-Hegener, Grades 3-6;

Brandon Lopez. Other big readers were: Kindergarten; Jordan Takanen

and Joseph Clement, First Grade; Isaiah Villareal and Ellie Wiermma,

Second Grade: Brayley Bruun and Holly Kutsi, Third Grade: Elizabeth Moe

and Carly George, Fourth Grade: Rob Licari and Jacee Zasadni, Fifth Grade:

Jacob Lindhorst and Amanda Bartoletti, Sixth Grade: Ashton Sandnas,

Education Minnesota President

Celebrates Reading

On March 2, Education

Minnesota President,

Tom Dooher, visited the

Nelle Shean Elementary

Kindergarten class to

read a book to students

as part of “Read Across

“Read Across America” is a program developed by the

National Education Association to motivate children to read in

order to create lifelong readers. The program began in May of

1997 as an awareness program to celebrate reading on the

MCA Testing Information

By-DANETTE SEBOE, District Assessment Coordinator

On Monday, April 4th

our district will begin

administration of the Minnesota Comprehensive

Assessments (MCA’s). The purpose of the MCA’s is to

measure Minnesota students’ achievement with

regard to the Minnesota Academic Standards. In

addition, the MCA results can be used to guide

curriculum decisions at the district and school level,

and to guide teaching at the classroom level.

The MCA’s are accountability tests required by the

2001 Federal Legislation “No Child Left

Behind” (NCLB). NCLB requires that all public school

students be assessed with either the statewide test or

an alternate assessment. Minnesota public schools

need to assess all students who are enrolled in the

district on the first day of a scheduled statewide test in

the subject area in the district. Included with this letter

is a copy of our district testing brochure, including

testing dates for all students.

Grades 3-8 will be taking the new Math MCA-III’s (last

year were the MCA-II’s) this year. This test will be com-

puter administered, with a calculator being

available only for the questions it can be used on.

(Handheld calculators are not allowed this year.

Students must use the computer calculator.) Students

are looking forward to this new online test and

teachers will be preparing them for the test format

before it is given. The 11th

grade math test remains the

MCA-II and is still paper and pencil.

Science MCA-II’s remain computer delivered and are

still given only to grades 5, 8, and 10.

It is important that your son/daughter take these tests

seriously and do their best. Please make sure they get

a good night’s sleep the night before testing. They

should have a healthy breakfast and come

prepared with any materials that are required (pencils,

calculator, and a book to read). Attendance on test

dates is critical. Please do not schedule any

appointments or trips during testing dates.

If you would like more information, or if you would like

to look at a practice test, please go to

http://education.state.mn.us.

Coordinator with questions at

How To Prepare For

The MCA’s

BEFORE THE TEST

1.Become familiar with test directions and format

(multiple choice, constructed response, etc.) by

looking at item samples found at the MDE website

www.education.state.mn.us

2. Take practice tests and complete any MCA practice

your teacher may send home.

3. Get a good night’s sleep the night before exams.

4. Eat a nutritious breakfast.

5. Wear layers of comfortable clothing.

6. Show up to your test site a little early and give your-

self time to relax.

7. Come prepared with #2 pencils, a calculator (for

parts of the Math test), and a book to read when you

have finished the exam.

8. Listen to and read directions CAREFULLY.

DURING THE TEST

1. Plan how you will use your time during the test.

2. Read each question carefully so that you fully un-

derstand what is being asked. It never hurts to read a

question twice.

3. Mark your responses clearly and erase any mistakes

or stray marks fully.

4. Keep a steady pace and don’t let difficult questions

affect your attitude or steal your time. Take a minute

to relax if you feel yourself getting stressed.

5. Don’t spend too much time on a difficult question.

Skip it and come back later if you have time. Don’t

forget to leave the space on your answer document.

6. Do not let other students distract you.

7. Do your BEST!

Testing Resources For

Parents And Students

These exams are very important, both for the

Individual students and for the Eveleth-Gilbert School

District.

If your child is unprepared for his or her exam, or

would just like to brush up before the test date, there

are several options available.

www.PerspectiveForFamilies.com

On your child’s Student Report from last year’s tests,

you will find this website and “Learning Locator” num-

ber. If your child has never taken one of these tests,

you can still find learning resources to help your child

prepare. You will find activities on this site created to

help children prepare for the MCAs. Many teachers

will be using this site as part of their classroom prepa-

ration and practice.

www.education.state.mn.us

Click on “Accountability Programs” then on

“Assessment and Testing.” On this page, you will see a

menu on the right of the Minnesota Tests. If you click

on any of these tests (MCA-II, GRAD, BST) you will find

another menu which includes additional information

about the tests. This menu includes ITEM SAMPLERS.

These samplers are great for giving students an idea of

what the questions will look like. You may also find

practice tests here.

Classroom Preparation

Before test time, your child’s

teacher may offer some

practice activities. Some of

these activities may be sent

home for students to work

on. Please go over them with

your child. They will help

students learn what to expect on test day and how to

approach different kinds of questions.

ECFE/SR Family Literature Night

The ECFE and School Readiness program

recently received a literacy grant from the

Target Corporation and was able to provide

a variety of activities with the funds.

Several new books were purchased for the

classroom and in as well as hosting the “Tales

with Tails” program by award winning author and storyteller, Kevin Strauss.

Mr. Straus performed his ranger theme and came dressed in cowboy vest, hat

and boots! Many of the stories were told using various hand motions and

sounds, along with a few props. Both parents and children were encouraged to

partake in the stories and parents were advised about how to make storytelling

more fun for their children at home.
