Our Adult School serves approximately 25,000 students each year in Sunnyvale and Cupertino. As such, we thought many of you might find knowing about the highlighted community organizations interesting and inspiring. Want to join with us and make a difference for them in 2012? Imagine if all 25,000 students (or better yet, the 100,000 of you receiving this catalogue donated ten dollars to one of the organizations below or referred someone for services.

Make a difference in 2012; start by reading about these three organizations and then make a donation, get involved, or help someone else get involved.

Sunnyvale Community ServicesDid you know that Sunnyvale has been identified by Silicon Valley United Way as one of the two fastest growing poverty areas in the county? Of the 140,000 residents in Sunnyvale, 27% fall into extremely low/low income categories. And this is by national standards that haven’t even been adjusted for our higher cost of living! Over 40% of the Sunnyvale School District’s students qualify for free and reduced price meals! Sunnyvale Community Services is an independent, nonprofit emergency assistance agency whose mission is to prevent homelessness and hunger. Want to help by volunteering or making that ten-dollar or more donation? Please call (408) 738-4321.

West Valley Community ServicesWVCS in Cupertino staffs a food pantry that is supplied by the Second Harvest Food Bank, local grocery stores, bakeries, and community donations. The Pantry is staffed primarily by volunteers who pick up more than 400,000 pounds of food annually and distribute packed grocery bags to over 2,000 individuals yearly. If you are interested in assisting at the food pantry or making a donation, please call Tricia Uyeda at (408) 255-8033 x102.

Pathways SunnyvalePathways is a community-based, not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving Bay Area patients and families in all stages of life since 1977. They offer comprehensive programs that include hospice, home health, and private duty care. On the website you can find: Publication resources—brochures, translated materials, and Integrative Therapies materials; Palliative Care—care and information on arranging home health care and hospice services; grief support—through individual counseling, support groups, and publication resources. You can access their website at http://www.pathwayshealth.org or contact their Intake Department for more information about meeting yours or others’ needs at (408) 730-5900. You can make a donation via their website or by calling.

Again, please join us in supporting these important, non-profit community organizations. If you make a donation or volunteer time, please sign our “guest book” by taking our survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/communitydonationsandvolunteering. We’ll post results after the new year and we can all see how we, as a community, are making a difference!
