Overview

• After handing out quantitative questionnaires to my participants, I obtained a variety of answers, which I will now explore.

Page 3: Quantitative Research Presentation

Direct Reference

• I handed out a quantitative questionnaire to a range of people and received 10 completed ones. Here are some examples:

Page 4: Quantitative Research Presentation

Demographic

These types of questions help identify particular characteristics of my audience, such as their different ages, genders and

locations.

Page 5: Quantitative Research Presentation

Are you male or female?

Gender Chart

MaleFemaleOther (please specify)Prefer not to say

The majority of my participants are male – however, only by two more people. I tried to keep my quantitative audience as even as possible to prevent gender biased results.

Page 6: Quantitative Research Presentation

Which age category do you currently belong too?

Age Chart

11-14 years old15-20 years old21-30 years old31-40 years old41-50 years old51-60 years old61 + years old

The majority of my participants are 15-20 years old. I questioned a variety of age groups to obtain a wider audience age demographic, and notice any media related patterns.

Page 7: Quantitative Research Presentation

What is your ethnic background?

Ethnicity Chart

WhiteAsian/Black BritishBlack/Black BritishOther (please specify)

The majority of my participants are of white ethnicity. I wanted to gain a wider ethnicity demographic to see whether it would affect their knowledge/experiences of media/social realism/short films.

Page 8: Quantitative Research Presentation

What is your current main occupation?

Occupation Chart

Full-time jobPart-time jobStudentOther (please specify)

The majority of my participants are students, and this allows me to compare and contrast the media related knowledge of students and workers/others.

Knowledge of the Genre

These questions are included to identify the media-related knowledge of participants, allowing me to identify any notable viewing habits. Overall,

it helps me to understand the audience demographic who will be interested in my product.

Page 10: Quantitative Research Presentation

Have you ever viewed a short film?

Viewing Short Films Chart

YesNo

The vast majority of my participants have viewed a short film. I therefore have a greater chance of gaining high standard responses, compared to participants who have not seen a short film.

Page 11: Quantitative Research Presentation

What do you think a short film’s running time should be?

Short-Film Length Chart

Under 5 minutesBetween 5-10 minutesBetween 11-15 minutesBetween 16-20 minutesOver 20 minutes

There was only a small difference in opinion, with the majority just favouring short films being 5-10 minutes long. The close results mean I have a challenge on what the duration of my short film length will be.

Page 12: Quantitative Research Presentation

Have you ever seen any of these short films?

About a Girl

Antonio's Breakfast

September

Soft

Stripes

The Most Beautiful Man in the World

Two Cars One Night

Vincent

Youth

NoYes

Although 90% of participants have seen a short film, the majority of people who had not seen the specified films was always higher, or the same as people who had seen the film. Therefore, this tells me the distribution and marketing of short films may be a problem, possibly due to the lack of funding and wider commercial interest from companies and audiences’ alike.

Are you familiar with any of these short film screening sites?

Screening Site Chart

Screening Site

The majority of my participants were familiar with the mainstream online sites, but not so much with the short film sites; this tells me short-film-only screening sites are targeted at a niche audience, and are not embraced by the wider demographic.

Viewing Habits

These questions allow me to understand the demand for media

and specifically short films.

Page 15: Quantitative Research Presentation

How regularly do you watch feature-length films?

Feature Films Chart

DailyWeeklyMonthlyQuarterlyYearlyNever

The majority of my participants watch feature-length films either weekly or monthly, demonstrating their popularity for my audience.

Page 16: Quantitative Research Presentation

How regularly do you watch short films?

Short Film Chart

DailyWeeklyMonthlyQuarterlyYearlyNever

The majority of my participants never watch short films on any basis, despite previously finding out they have viewed some before; this suggests to me that they do not watch short films other than when they need too for educational purposes.

Page 17: Quantitative Research Presentation

Which genre is of your most general interest?

Genre Chart

HorrorComedyThrillerSocial RealismActionAdventureRomanceOther: Psychological

The majority of my participants enjoy the genre of comedy. What is noticeable is that nobodies favourite genre is social realism. This suggests to me that the mainstream genres always over-shroud the social realism genre by means of the audience’s general popularity and interest.

Page 18: Quantitative Research Presentation

Do you find it easy to find shorts to watch?

Finding Short-Films Chart

YesNo

The majority of my participants find it difficult to find short-films, which further demonstrates the decreased interest and popularity short-films are to the wider audience.
