Qualitative Audience Focus Group In this part of the project I gained detailed qualitative feedback from a sample of my target audience. I gained useful information from my Poster templates, Magazine templates and later got feedback from my finished trailer. This beneficial feedback from the poster and magazines were vital in improving my magazine and poster which lead up to the final product. In the process of of this I utilised/had 7 Males and 8 Females to give feedback on my templates of the poster and magazine and finally used the same sample for the trailer feedback. Participants names are anonymous hence why I reference their quotes/feedback with P1 or P2 etc.

Qualitative Audience Focus

GroupIn this part of the project I gained detailed qualitative feedback from a sample of my

target audience. I gained useful information from my Poster templates, Magazine templates and later got feedback from my finished trailer. This beneficial feedback

from the poster and magazines were vital in improving my magazine and poster which lead up to the final product. In the process of of this I utilised/had 7 Males and 8 Females to give feedback on my templates of the poster and magazine and finally used the same sample for the trailer feedback. Participants names are anonymous

hence why I reference their quotes/feedback with P1 or P2 etc.

Qualitative Feedback For Poster Templates

• My audience responded to this template positively. P1 stated that “The dark colours complement the red well and the same colours can be seen in the production, distribution and sponsor logos”. However P7 gave a important opinion “I don’t really understand what the poster is about, its not too informative, its just a shadow and without a slogan its difficult to be interested”. Using these opinions I know that my final poster should incorporate colour continuity as that appears to be favoured by my audience and I should avoid being un-informative via adding more thought provoking or informative pictures such as a portrait picture of the villain as this informs the audience as to what the villain looks like, it provides a foundation of interest for the viewer/reader.

• Again with this template there were some aspects they liked and did not like. One participant stated that “The simple layout of the poster works well in looking eerie and interesting” although others made the point that “ It looks simple but the image doesn’t really tell me that this is a horror movie poster excluding the company symbols at the bottom.” I learnt from this template that simple elements work well to provide eeriness and mystery but the images must be more slasher suggestive or more referential of the genre.

RELEASE DATE

The audience liked this poster for the following reasons; “This tells me a lot about the film even though its just a graveyard, there are 5 grave stones which means more than one person is going to die” and other stated that “The black and white are very contrasting colours and it looks like a horror movie poster”. In conclusion this feedback on my template informs me that my audience would like a final poster incorporating good 3 colour schemes which are consistent, a picture which is conventional with the slasher genre and involves Mise En Scene and uses Iconography. I intend to combine these factors that my target audience showed a preference for and therefore will be catering to my demographic and their wants and needs. In my Poster analysis I outlined these features also so I will look back to this so I can make a professional looking poster which is formulaic with others of its kind e.g. Scream. Also using fixed meaning images known as iconography I can suggest the genre more effectively just like this gravestone did.

Moving onto the Magazine analysis, I used the same sample for this phase. I chose this Empire template as I intended to see how my audience would react if my horror film was the cover story and central image for Empire which is unconventional of the magazine as they cover blockbusters and not independent films as pointed in the feedback as Ps said “ This looks too violent for an Empire cover, I just wouldn’t expect this from a mainstream magazine like this, they showcase movies more well known like Captain America” and “The placement of articles and other things on the side look normal but the big image feels out of place and awkward”. In this experimental template I have learnt that my demographic will pick up quickly on magazine aspects that are un-formulaic or unconventional of the magazine or the actual magazine layout.

Qualitative Audience Feedback For Magazine Templates

Page 6: Qualitative Audience Focus Group

Mixed feedback was gained from this particular cover as some Ps felt “Its looks different and creative” whereas others said “Not informative enough and lacks any information or anything to keep me interested, the other Fangoria cover template at least had side articles and promotions to keep me reading”. This tells me that LWL is not a suitable cover for my horror film as my audience have expressed that the cover is not interesting enough, despite the various filters and visual effects I have applied to this picture to suggest the slasher genre the audience do not find it interesting so hence why it is not suitable as; if the picture is made more interesting via colours it will not suggest the grim genre of slasher and if I try to maintain the black, white and red for my slasher film then it is too dark and uninteresting for a LWL cover in comparison to other covers which makes it a bad emulation or replication of a LWL cover.

Page 7: Qualitative Audience Focus Group

I received mostly positive feedback from this template as “This cover looks well suited to your film, I haven’t read fangoria but I can tell it’s a horror based magazine which fits in with your horror film” and another P stated “In comparison to Empire & Little White Lies this magazine looks a lot more natural as in the horror film being ina horror magazine”. Also they stated “the colours from here seem to reflect the colurs on the poster which looks nice to represent your horror film”. Moving onto my conclusion I believe this has taught me that I should choose Fangoria as a magazine for my horror film as it is the most logical decision in terms of genre, Empire and Little White Lies as suggested by my audience feedback are not suitable for the Slasher genre and will not attract the correct demographic entailed with the magazine. My views are further supported by the Magazine analysis of 3 magazine covers I carried out in which finding a horror cover for Empire and Little White Lies proved difficult in my research into the conventions of each of the magazines proving the genre incompatibility if a horror cover was to feature on Empire and LWL.
