Spelling strategies
Some useful spelling strategies
A. Use your visual skills to see if a word is spelt correctly
B. Break the word up into bits
C. Mnemonics (useful device to help you remembering stuff)
I before E except after C e.g. brief and ceiling are spelt correctly using this
tool. CAREFUL as this rule does not always work, for instance when the sound
of the ee is like ei e.g. feisty, weird, deceive, efficient and heist.
Drop the final E If your word ends in a vowel and you are adding a suffix that
starts with a vowel (ing or ed or es or ance etc.) to it e.g. Guide + ance
becomes guidance. CAREFUL as this rule does not always work, for instance
notice + able becomes noticeable.
Swap the final Y to an I If your word ends in a Y and you are adding a suffix to
it e.g. try + ies becomes tries. CAREFUL as this rule does not always work, for
instance it does not work with some words when the suffix starts with an i e.g.
copy + ing becomes copying.
D. Practise, practise, practise. Try to spell the word in the spelling list on
this site.
