From the Director`s Desk Dear Friends and Families of QSI Astana, Welcome back and we hope you had a wonderful spring break. Not only is it time for tulips, it is also the season for surveys. This week, you will receive the QSI Intention Survey indicating your plans for next school year. While we understand that not everyone knows exactly where they will be this August, the more we know, the better plans we can make to serve you and your family. Speaking of surveys, last fall, 113 families participated in the QSI Astana School Climate Survey. Overall, marks were very high. The areas still encouraged to improve included more diversity in af- ter school clubs, more choices in hot lunch, and a more affordable busing service. I want to com- pliment our Athletic and Activities director, Mr. Martin Thorstensson, for his ongoing efforts to al- ways keep fresh and interesting after school and athletic programs available. I want to encourage families to volunteer for clubs and to also support sporting events by their attendance and cheer- ing. We do continue to explore other services both for food and busing. We hope to provide a bet- ter alternative for busing for next year, but in the meantime, have worked closely with our drivers and monitors to be as punctual as possible, and to communicate as much as possible when neces- sary. Our lunch service continues to be popular among the teaching staff who share their thoughts and suggestions with the chef both as consumers and parents themselves. Finally, I want to compliment our Parent Support Group. The QSI Astana PSG are a wonderful group of mother and fathers who meet regularly to discuss how to better support school life and activities. This is also a great forum to discuss their suggestions for any school needs. This open communication at PSG, along with “Brown Bag Lunches” at embassies and Nazarbayev Universi- ty, allow parents and school leadership to continue to work for the common good. Most of all, the feedback from your children this year has been exceptionally valuable. To quote one young lady in our secondary program who was genuinely sur- prised at our rigor, “This is the toughest school, but the kindest people...” Happy Spring, and may the cold, hard ground show us all a little green kindness soon. ASA Corner– Knitting

with Ms. Gulmira

Knitting ASA is for anyone between the ages 8-11 who is interested in learning to knit. The participants are working on developing basic knitting techniques that would hope-fully lead to practical projects such as scarves, knitting squares, hats, etc. Everyone is supportive of each other's knitting and newcomers are teamed up with someone who is able to knit that builds group cohesion. While devel-oping new skills, knitting al-lows the participants to ex-plore their creativity in a re-

laxing atmosphere!

Over the last month I visited all classrooms and talked about Random Acts of Kindness. For 5 & 6 yo classes I read My Mouth is a Volcano followed by a coloring sheet. The 7-9 yo classes worked together to make a Random Acts of Kindness tree to help remind us what we can do every day to spread kindness at home and at school. The 10-13 yo students made posters for the middle school halls and bathrooms to spread the positivity. Lastly, the secondary students covered the bathrooms walls with notes to help lift everyone's spirits and give all of us the

supportive push we needed to make it to spring break!! I would say it was another successful month of guidance lessons!

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any comments, questions or concerns!!

Hope you had a WONDERFUL AND SAFE spring break!!

Volleyball Season Debut a Smashing

Success for QSI

Last Thursday, a QSI volleyball squad of seven girls

and two boys crossed the Esil River to take on Hai-

leybury, and performed well in its season debut.

First, the girls took the court. Led by the steady

overhead serving of the Holmgren sisters, Macy

(SEC IV) and Aja (SEC II), the Wolves rallied to win the first game (25-23) and used the

momentum from the end of the first to take the second game handily (25-18). Next up,

John Lee (SEC IV) and Makar Filchenko (SEC III) were aided by their female teammates

and one Haileybury volunteer, and they came away with a 25-10, 26-24 victory. Makar's

jump serves and definitive smashes drew loud "OOOs" from teammates, opponents and

spectators.

Coach Helena lauded the great team spirit. She and Coach Sarah hope to see im-

provement in the ball control and in-game communication as the season progresses

toward a potential berth in the Central Asia Volleyball Classic in Atyrau at the end of

April.

Boys Hoopsters Show Resilience in Season Finale

In the United States, "March Madness" is as much as sign of spring as the appearances of snowdrops and crocuses. Earlier this month, the QSI "Lady Wolves" experienced their own ver-sion of March Madness by reaching the final in the junior varsity girls division at the Central Asia Basketball Classic in Almaty. Last Friday, the varsity boys faced their most difficult test of the season, when School #54 visited QSI. Because of injuries and illness to two key players, Mr. Ford had to use the same five players -- Makar Filchenko (SEC III), Mustafa Turkyilmaz and Vojtech Joza (both SEC II), Simone Pietraroia (SEC I) and Micah Ford (13 yo) -- for the en-tire 40 minutes! Down by only three points after one quarter, the Wolves couldn't keep up with the deeper visiting squad, and eventually fell by a 54-20 score. Despite the loss, Mr. Ford was impressed by the improvement his team showed over the two-month season and their resili-ence and fight against a tough foe.

Players and coaches, congratulations on fine seasons! Coaches, Mr. Ford (varsity boys), Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Mandy (girls) and Coach Rafa (junior varsity boys), thank you for continu-ing to build the basketball tradition at QSI.

Wolves Make Noise in

School League Debut

The QSI Wolves futsal team for boys born

2002-2003 had an impressive showing as

the school debuted in the 58-team school

league organized by the Football Federa-

tion of Astana (FFA).

After finishing second in Group H, QSI easily defeated School-Lyceum #64 (9-4) and Ts2

(8-2) in its first knockout-stage matches. Unfortunately, the tournament came to an end

in the quarterfinals, with a narrow 4-3 loss to the eventual champions from School-

Lyceum #71. In that match, Mr. Dimash's squad fell behind 3-0, despite numerous saves

by goalkeeper Salekh Assaubayev (13 yo). That score held until there were about five

minutes left. Simone Pietraroia (SEC I) scored two goals in quick succession, and all of a

sudden, the Wolves had their opponents on their heels. Juan Juanicotena (SEC I)

equalized and had another good chance to score late, but just when a penalty

shootout seemed inevitable, #71 scored the game-winning goal to quash QSI's dreams.

Juan, who scored 24 goals in seven matches (second-most among all players), was se-

lected by the FFA as the league's best striker. Captain Eyal Brodsky also stood out for his

skill, leadership and fair play.

Congratulations on a great season!!!
