Where Do You Go When You’re Back in Madison? WALLY LONGO ’99 ANSWERS

Wally Longo ’99 stopped in at Queen of Peace the other day. He and his wife Katie have just moved back to Madison from Chicago, and he wants to get involved.

“QP is and always has been the core of our family. Mom and Dad both came from very strong Catholic immigrant families, Italian and Irish, and the church is the center of their lives. My mom works at the school and my dad will go to early morning Mass at QP or another church before he goes to work. When we all come home, the visit always centers around QP,” says Wally.

“Anyone who knew me when I was here in school or at Edgewood knows that I didn’t like to be told what to do. I was a kid. But now I really appreciate what Catholic school and the Catholic faith did for me,” he says.

“I sometimes hear people my age sort of admitting they went to Catholic school in an apologetic way, because it’s not supposed to be cool. But I’m grateful for everything QP did for me. I want to try to give back,” says Wally.

Wally is looking into helping at the Catholic Multicultural Center and has already joined a parish committee. Welcome back, Wally!

S. Alyce Kelly Still Loves Queen of PeaceWhen a certain Dominican recently pored over an issue of the new QP Connections semi-annual newsletter at the Sinsinawa Mound, my phone rang soon after.

“Hello Kate? This is Sister Alyce Kelly.”

Sounding not a whit different from the ’70s and early ’80s, when she served as religious education director for QP Parish and School, S. Alyce wanted to offer her help, and we chatted about her life. S. Alyce has been retired to the Mound for 12 years. Her work includes 13 years in Milwaukee, four in Wausau, 13 at QP, 18 in Rockford, one sabbatical year, and now teaching English to Dominican sisters from Vietnam and reading for the blind at the Mound – over 60 years of service! After all that, she concludes:

“Queen of Peace was my favorite mission. It was the people! This was after the Second Vatican Council, and there were changes. The people asked so many good questions. I loved that the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Word had new and exciting value. The parents of children preparing for Sacraments met with me in groups of 10 couples, and were very positive and satisfied with my explanations. It was an interesting time!”

“Interesting” is how S. Alyce made religious education for the students, too. She had an altar in her small office and one of QP’s associate priests would say Mass there separately for each grade. [Author’s note: I remember this well.]

“There were very fine associate priests there – Frs. Tom Monaghan, Jim Kuhn, Bill Connell, Steve Smith – I’m forgetting some. They were so generous with their time – and this way they could give the homily on the level of the children,” says S. Alyce.

“I loved all the teachers. A wonderful group of the CCD teachers still comes to see me every year – Alice Battista, Barbara Pomarnke, Mary Ann Lynch, Kathy Perepezko, Darlene Mannarino, Rella Shulla, and Mary Boyle, though Mary passed away not so long ago. Seeing them is a real thrill for me! I now live with S. Leonius Skaar, S. Joris Binder, and S. Mary Lois Carey, and enjoy telling old-time QP stories. The students, teachers, and all the parishioners – I just loved all of them,” she says.

“Here’s a good story,” she begins. “In my first year of preparing second graders for the Sacrament of Penance, I drew a chart on the board – what to say, when, with a blank space for the sin to be confessed. A child asked, ‘Sister,

what goes in the blank?’ ‘The sin,’ I said. Blank stares all around. ‘Let’s think of an example,’ I said. Just then a fire truck screamed down the street outside. ‘There’s a good example,’ I wrote, ‘I stole one fire truck. Now don’t say that – put in your own sin.’ And off we went.”

“Well, the children were smiling going into the Confessional and smiling coming out. Pretty soon, the priest came out and asked me quietly, ‘I don’t mean to break the seal, but what is this about a fire truck?’”

Sr. Alyce laughs heartily at that one, sounding like the Irish girl she is. Growing up on the Irish west side of Chicago, she went to Resurrection School, with 1,300 children, and Providence all-girls high school with 1,200 students. Her sister Dorothy also became a Sinsinawa Dominican, and sister, Kay, a Sister of Providence. “Our oldest sister Rosemary, who did not enter religious life, we called ‘the one that got away,’ ” she chuckles.

If you would like to give to Our Lady Queen of Peace in honor of S. Alyce Kelly, go to qopc.org, click on Give, then Faith Direct, and note “In honor of S. Alyce Kelly.” To give to the Sinsinawa Dominicans in her honor, you can mail a contribution to 585 County Road Z, Sinsinawa, WI 53824-9701. And remember, Sister enjoys a good story.

Kessenich ’73 Takes the Road Less Traveled, Remembers QP Friends FondlyTom Kessenich ’73 dropped me a line the other day. He was glad we were able to find him and mail him this newsletter! Tom’s family moved to Monroe after grade school, so he didn’t see his QP classmates often after that.

“We were like family at QP,” Tom feels. “I don’t know about others but if you went to a big high school, it was never quite the same as it was at QP.”

“Sometimes at hockey games I saw [QP classmates] when we were playing each other,” Tom adds, a little wistfully but quickly turning energetic again. “I liked Monroe High School, and God put me there for a reason.”

Tom fondly remembers many QP teachers, including Mrs. Nord for science, Sr. Patricia, Mrs. Helen Thompson, and Mrs. Rosario.

“Mrs. Rosario was a little woman, but she didn’t take any garbage from me. She told my mom at conferences one time, ‘Mrs. Kessenich, your son is very sweet and very animated in class!’ ” says Tom.

Tom would love to get back in touch with any classmates from 1973, and has a ton of stories he can “rattle off.” Pun intended – because Tom is now a herpetologist! Class of 1973, do you remember that Tom liked snakes?

“I was allowed to bring one to school on the last day to show the class one time, and here I am kneeling on the kneeler at Mass first thing in the morning with my snake in a snake bag next to me on the floor. That was a pretty unusual day,” he says.

“Now I’m an entertainer/educator; I do reptile shows. So I guess Mrs. Rosario was right!”

Thanks for contacting us at QP, Tom. We’re proud to have you among our alumni!

You Made it Happen!

Alumni & Parents of Alumni Make the Difference in First School Endowment Drive

Thank you to these alumni and parents of alumni who joined current parents, Girl Scout troops, students, and parish members to support the goal of matching an anonymous $250,000 donation to the QP School Endowment; the goal was reached and the endowment corpus grew by over 50%! This will allow QP to give tuition assistance to more students and better care for facilities for years and years to come!

My response is, ‘I went to Catholic school!’ …My teacher in 2nd grade was Sr. Petronia … whom we referred to as Sr. Petunia …. She taught cursive with the goal of perfection. … she could be quite amusing at times and loving when needed. I think she was about 4' 10" and quite portly. Jim Freeman ’63 comments that “[When we were kids, w]e got to go out on our own and fi nd kids to play with at the parks, playgrounds, and in the neighborhood. You sure don’t see that much anymore, and it’s a loss for our grandkids, isn’t it? I’m getting very close to full retirement, but still have a small sales contracting business and am a senior member of the Madison Stagehands Union. …Living in the country … caring for an elderly mother … enjoying my grandkids ….”

CORRECTION

The Class of 1962 DID have a 50th class reunion, organized by Dick Reynolds and Barb Bauhs Goldsworthy. Those classes that did not have an offi cial 50th reunion are 1950-1961. Many of these classes had to leave QP after 6th or 7th grade due to overcrowding, and the building project to remedy it. Thank you Tom Martinelli, ’63!
