Polio’s Return After Near Eradication Prompts a Global Health Warning

Alarmed by the spread of polio to several fragile countries, the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency on Monday for only the second time since regulations permitting it to do so were adopted in 2007. Just two years ago — after a 25-year campaign that vaccinated billions of children — the paralyzing virus was near eradication; now health officials say that goal could evaporate if swift action is not taken. Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon have recently allowed the virus to spread — to Afghanistan, Iraq and Equatorial Guinea, respectively — and should take extraordinary measures to stop it, the health organization said.

*** May 6th Meeting ***

Guests

Two guests this morning, Trevor Wicks our Speaker and Mike’s guest Steve Price-Francis. Welcome Trevor &Steve!

A Mothers Day Idea!

At a recent family gathering my four children were reminiscing about past Mother’s Day’s, laughing about some of the events past and a little sad that all of that was in the past. It got me thinking about what they (and I) could do to honour their mother and mine. This led me to an organization called “Free the Children” www.freethechildren.com - they have a Mother’s Day contribution opportunity called Mama’s to Mama’s where any contribution you make provides support for Single Mom’s abroad or here at home. I checked out their credentials and found that just over 90% of contributions go to Program with Admin costs reported at just over 9%. So, if like my four children and me, you no longer have a mother to honour, perhaps this is an option?

Trevor Wicks is an inventor (check out his website at www.innovationbc.com ) who is particularly passionate about water: where it comes from, how water is absorbed, how water moves, the impact of development on water quality and ideas about efficient methods of water storage and utilization. He is particularly critical of Parksville and the Regional District’s plan to divert Englishman River water into the natural aquifers. For those interested, the City of Parksville will be having a show and tell of that system at City Hall this Thursday, May 8 at 3 pm and again at 7 pm.
