National Literacy by Daisia Jackson We have exciting news to share! ABC Action news chose the AP Capstone program at Brooks DeBartolo out of every high school in Tampa to participate in their National News Literacy Project. On Jan. 27th, Scripps TV stations (ABC’s parent company) around the country, as well as Scripps’ National Media brands, will premiere stories produced in collaboration with local schools on a topic of importance to their communities. The nationwide premiere of the stories will kick off National News Literacy Week 2020, presented by the News Literacy Project and The E.W. Scripps Company, and will highlight high school-produced journalism on-air. The research that Mr. Joensen’s students conducted in AP Seminar was chosen for ABC’s segment. A group of seven students worked with a crew from ABC to: 1. Co-produce a story with ABC journalists on their topic: How does extensive expo-sure to social media in high school affect the development of students’ self-perceptions? 2. Produce a story about how the students co-produced the story with the ABC jour-nalists (behind-the-scenes). This story will include information about National News Literacy Week. The seven students are: Hannah Cileli, Brooke Maggio, Jazmine Jackson, Thomas Es-pinosa, Hannah Labohn, Olivia Mairn, Myra Wilson.. Thank you to Mr. Joensen for coordinating this wonderful, real-world opportunity for the students. ABC Action News Director, the news anchor, and the photojournalist were so impressed with Mr. Joensen and at the level of research and academic rigor of our students. We look forward to seeing the final product, but we know the process and experience was invaluable!

The Tampa Bay Times spent some time with the Girls Basketball team this week. The Girls Basketball team is currently ranked #6 in the state. They take on Wiregrass Ranch (9-3 record) Thursday night, January 30th, at home at 6:00PM.

Brooks DeBartolo’s motto: ‘If you can’t play defense, then you can’t play’

Wilbur said she feels extra blessed be-cause in her first year as a head coach she not only inherited a team full of talent and athleticism, but one with a great attitude of hard work, and teamwork.

Over the winter break, members of the Students Of Color Association (SOCA) participated in a service project for our community. They made and distributed several donations for the homeless. Aniya Giddens volunteered to assemble the care packages themselves, then Bridget Kimball went with Maiya on Christmas Day to help issue them to homeless citizens in the area. Thanks also to Jess for her generous donation to this project. We are so thankful that we have such gener-ous and kind students at Brooks DeBartolo.

Bright Futures Hours by Michelle Debbaudt Important Bright Futures Community Service Policy: All Bright Futures community service hours must be pre-approved by your School Counselor before starting a project. If not, the community service hours will not be accepted. All hours must be turned into your School Counse-lor during the semester that they are completed. For example, if you volunteer in March of 2020, your hours must be turned in by May of 2020. If you volunteer in September of 2020, your hours must be turned in by December of 2020. If you volunteer during summer break, your hours will be accepted the following fall semester. If you volunteer during winter break, your hours would be ac-cepted the following spring semester. Come talk to your school counselor to see what community service opportunities are right for you.

AP Seminar by Ashton Alaras

Ring-a-Ding-Ding…..that’s right, the wedding bells are chiming! Our AP Seminar students recently “married” their research. They had a ceremony where they walked down the aisle to the wedding march and tied the knot with a ring pop after Mr. Joensen officiated their “marriage”. The “wedding” signified their commitment to their research topic, seeing as we have begun our AP exam (more of a reminder for them that they are devot-ed to this topic and are not allowed to change). If you see any Capstone students be sure to tell them congrat-ulations! “Dear friends and family, we are gathered here today to witness and celebrate the union of the teams and their topics in marriage. In the days they have been together, their love and understanding of each other has grown and matured, and now they have decided to live their lives together as researcher and topic. Today, as they join themselves in research methodologies, there is a vast and unknown future stretching out before them. The possibilities and potentials of their studies are great; and now falls upon their shoulders the task of choosing their research questions and making real their thesis. Through their commitment to each other, may they grow and nurture a Performance Task 1 that makes all of them better people, a project that continues to give them great joy, and also a passion for learning that provides them with energy and patience to face the responsibilities from College Board. Do the teams take their topics as their PT1 Research Topic? By the power vested in me by the College Board, I now pronounce them, researcher and topic……they may now begin their paper.” Some of the sophomore topics include: - College hazing - A lack in sex/health education leading to an in-crease in aggressive relationships and domestic violence due to a misrepresentation of relation-ships in media - Fast fashion causing environmental and social damage - Stereotyping in the criminal justice system - Effects of adolescent desensitization - Negative impacts and absent regulations of the dark web/cryptocurrencies ONE LAST REMINDER – we have started “the real deal performance tasks” which is their AP Exam, so no help or feedback can be provided to any Capstone students on their research or else their score will be invalidated….it’s the same as one of us giving them an answer to a multiple choice question on an AP Exam in May.
