HOW DID YOU ATTRACT

YOUR AUDIENCE?

Evaluation Question 2

TARGET AUDIENCE

Before I did anything I decided on the target audience of my

magazine, musical theatre fans. By doing this I knew I would have

include elements that would attract this group of people, meaning

things like Broadway shows and theatre actors/actresses.

AUDIENCE PROFILE

To get an idea of the type of person I would be creating my

magazine for, I made a simple audience profile where I used an image

of the character Rachel Berry from the TV show ‘Glee’, who is a

typical theatre lover. This profile involved images of actors/actresses

and musicals I would be including in my magazine. It also involved

rough ideas of the type of images I wanted to re create for my front

cover.

HOW I ATTRACTED MY

AUDIENCE

I went about attracting my audience by including typical theatre

elements in my magazine, such as legend musical actresses such a Barbra

Streisand and Judy Garland. I especially added a lot of big names into the

contents page, just to add more into it.

Always referring back to my audience profile, I wanted to appeal to

not only young people but also the older generation, I think my magazine

would attract these people as it looks old fashioned and maybe like

something that would have been on sale years ago.

One of the ways I attracted the younger generation of theatre fans

was having my main cover star be relatable. By making her young and

interested in theatre from a very young age (seen in the

interview, double page spread) she should be relatable to people in her

situation.

Having my cover star ‘achieving her dream’ is also appealing as it

gives off a good message to aspiring actors/actresses who want to

make it big.

The style model I used for my magazine is Playbill, a programme

often on sale at Broadway shows. As this is only a way of showing the

audience information about the show, rather than a full magazine, I

thought it was a good idea to have a whole magazine to appreciate

musical theatre, rather than just focusing on one musical at a time. I

think that because this is such a niche market, theatre fans would buy

the magazine as it is one of the only one that exists.
