Healthy eating in childhood and adolescence isimportant for proper growth and development andcan prevent health problems such as obesity,dental caries, iron deficiency, and osteoporosis. Food provides the energy and nutrients you needto be healthy. Nutrients include proteins ,carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.

2. Are you eating healthy?Learning to eat nutritiously is not hard. The key is to Eat a variety of foods, including vegetables, fruits andwhole-grain products Eat lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and low-fat dairyproducts Drink lots of water Go easy on the salt , sugar, alcohol, saturated fat andtrans fatRemember: saturated fats are usually fats that come from animals.Look for trans fat onthe labels ofprocessed foods, margarines andshortenings. 3. Getting schools involved Schools are in a unique position to promotehealthy eating and help ensure appropriatefood and nutrient intake among students.Schools provide students with opportunitiesto consume an array of foods and beveragesthroughout the school day and enablestudents to learn about and practice healthyeating behaviors. Schools should ensure that only nutritiousand appealing foods and beverages areprovided in school cafeterias, vendingmachines, snack bars, school stores, andother venues that offer food and beverages tostudents. In addition, nutrition educationshould be part of a comprehensive schoolhealth education curriculum. 4. Goals for a healthieryou 5. Why should we have PE in schools? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Servicesrecommends that young people aged 617 years participate in atleast 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Overweight and obesity, which are influenced by physicalinactivity and poor diet, can increase ones risk for diabetes, highblood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, arthritis, and poorhealth status. Physical inactivity increases ones risk for dyingprematurely. Schools can promote physical activity through comprehensiveschool physical activity programs, including recess, classroom-based physical activity, intramural physical activity clubs,interscholastic sports, and physical education. Schools can ensure that physical education is provided to allstudents in all grades and is taught by qualified teachers. Schools can also work with community organizations to provideout-of-school-time physical activity programs and share physicalactivity facilities. 7.
