A Bite of Health Making the Healthy Choice the Easy Choice

10 Activities for a Happy

Healthy Holiday

This year, don't let the hus-tle and bustle of the season get you down. Keep your shopping simple and save some time for fun, refresh-ing activities that will make your spirits bright.

1. Try a winter picnic! Pack some hot soup or chili, and head outdoors with family or friends.

2. Have a contest to see who can build the biggest snowman in the neighbor-hood.

3. Invent your own healthy drink. Try hot cranberry and apple juice. It’s delicious!

4. Rent your favorite come-dy movie, and give your stomach muscles a workout!

5. Grab your skates or a sled and head outdoors to the local skating rink or hill.

6. Try something new! Try learning a new language or sign up for a cooking class or a new sport.

7. Learn about holiday tradi-tions from other cultures and see if you can add some-thing new to your holiday routines.

8. Spread some cheer! Vol-unteer at local charities. They always need extra help during the holiday season.

9. Check out the local festi-vals happening in your com-munity.

10. Relax with a book! Read alone, or as a family.

Healthy Holiday Eating – Top Tips

This time of year it is especially difficult to make healthy choices. Below are some top tips to help you to make the healthy choice:

load up on fruit instead of cakes, squares or candy

choose 100% fruit juice or water instead of punch, pop or other sugary options

do not skip meals, it will lead you to be hungrier and to eat more later on

try to choose whole grains – start by switching your toast in the morning

stay away from deep-fried appetizers and stick with fresh vegetables and low-fat dips

December is already upon us! The time has flown by. The children are

busy getting ready for Christmas concert and our annual Christmas dinner.

We continue to do a lot of learning in our classroom and we appreciate how

most everyone has been keeping up with their home reading. We would

also like to thank all our Grade 2 parents/guardians for making sure all of

the kids are dressed properly for the cold winter.

Please continue to read with your child and helping them with our sight

words every night. It is greatly appreciated.

Our class Christmas party will be on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.

We will have snacks and watch a movie and spend time with one another

before leaving for Christmas holidays. If you wish to send a snack with

your child to share with the rest of the class we recommend healthy options

such as fruits and veggies, muffins, milk, 100% juice.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year!!!

News From Mrs. Morin’s Desk

Thank you to all who came out for Parent/Teacher interviews.

It was great to see you and to discuss your child’s progress.

Foods 10

This group has finished the Module on snacks and appetizers.

Good work by all.

Social Studies Grade 7

We are about to begin learning bout the early European colonies

in North America. The focus is on how the colonies aimed to

develop and to control the resources of this new land.

Social Studies Grade 8

We have learned how values and beliefs of people during the Re-

naissance began to change. In this next chapter, we will examine

how identity and citizenship grew out of the Renaissance. We

will also examine the spirit of exploration and how this led to the

European ideas of imperialism.

Social Studies Grade 99

Our next chapter focuses on Canada’s Charter of Rights and

Freedoms. We will examine this from the viewpoint of how well it

protects individual rights.

Language Arts Grade 9

The class has been working on the novel “Dare” by Marilyn Hal-

vorson. This novel deals with a 15 year od young man who lives in

Alberta and has to make some tough decisions about his life. All

student are enjoying this piece of literature.

If you have any concerns, call me.

CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES

The Career and Technology Studies class are working with various internet apps and programs this

month. These programs include Voki, Tagxedo, Glogster, Instagrok, and Survey Monkey. The students

will continue to be building their own digital portfolios as well, and storing their work into their

portfolios. The students are also accessing digital books in PDF form to read wherever they would like

at their convenience. We look forward to all the exciting things to come in Tech this month!

ENGLISH 20

The English 20 class has been working very hard on their recent Shakespearean play unit, Macbeth.

They are answering questions about the play and will be working on their “choice menu” assignments

shortly. Many of the students have created strong summaries of the play, which focused on building

structured paragraphs, sentence fluency, and enriched vocabulary. They have also been building their

choice menu assignments, which provide them an opportunity to choose between writing a journal

article and presenting a short play. Following their journal article or play, the students will perform a

debate to discuss the validity of the interpretation of their performance piece. Students are working

hard to prepare their debate’s key points. We look forward to seeing all of their wonderful ideas come

to life though their presentations and debates!

SOCIAL 20

The Social 20 class will be working towards our next big question, “To what extent should international-

ism be pursued?” In this unit, the students will focus on ideas such as nations, nation-states, and inter-

nationalism, as well as foreign policy, nationalism, and global issues surrounding internationalism.

Throughout this unit, the students will be viewing and reading about different historical and modern

day events that relate to the themes of the unit. They will also be answering a variety of questions about

the chapters they read and working towards building their “choice menu” assignments. I look forward

to hearing the students’ points of views, sharing ideas, and gaining the insight and opinions of the stu-

dents in a respectful manner.

ENGLISH 10

The English 10 class has been working very hard on their recent novel study unit, 1984. They are an-

swering questions about the novel and will be working on their “choice menu” assignments shortly.

Many of the students have created strong summaries of the story, which focused on building structured

paragraphs, sentence fluency, and enriched vocabulary. They have also been building their choice menu

assignments, which provide them an opportunity to choose between writing a journal article or present-

ing a short play. Following their journal article or play, the students will perform a debate to discuss the

validity of the interpretation of their performance piece. Students are working hard to prepare their de-

bate’s key points. We look forward to seeing all of their wonderful ideas come to life though their

In Cree class we are studying the Kinship Terms and Basic Conversation—Part 1.

It is a very interesting unit for the SR. students, they find it very interesting that

work.

Aboriginal Studies 20—The Metis People and Cultural Change
