tan’si niwâhkômâkanak,
It’s nice to see that winter has arrived a bit early this year. Pâwahcikinases reminds us that indeed this is the time for snow drifts.
With winter’s arrival I must remind parents and caregivers to ensure that your children are dressed properly for the weather and
for any activities that may require your children to be outside.
I want to take this time to thank all the parents and caregivers who came out to the November Parent Teacher Interviews; your
support is greatly appreciated. I encourage all parents to come in and visit with your child’s class and/or make contact with your
child’s teacher(s) to check on your child’s progress. The doors at KEC are always open for those parents and caregivers who may
want to stop in for a visit and coffee…pekiyoke (“come visit”).
December is shaping up to be a busy, exciting month for KEC. Here are some important dates for the month of December:
December 3 - Term 1 KEC Awards (9:00am)
December 8 – 12 - Senior High Trades Training (Welding installment)
December 12 - School Round-dance & Winter Feast (5pm Feast)
December 15 - KEC Student Speak-Out (Gr. 7 – 12)
December 16 - KEC Christmas Dinner with the Elders (noon)
December 18 - KEC Annual Christmas Concert (1pm)
December 18 - Final day of classes for students
December 19 - No classes / Staff PD Day
Please read through this month’s newsletter for more additional dates and activities going on throughout the month of December.
On behalf of the staff here at KEC, I want to say “meyo manito kîsikâw ekwa ocehtowi kîsikâw” (Merry Christmas and
Happy New Year). May the Creator keep you and yours safe and warm this holiday season…send prayers for those who may be less
fortunate this season.
With respect,
Mr. Cory Arcand

Healthy Holiday Eating – Top Tips
This time of year it is especially difficult to make healthy choices. Below are some top tips to help you to make the healthy choice:
load up on fruit instead of cakes, squares or candy
choose 100% fruit juice or water instead of punch, pop or other sugary options
do not skip meals, it will lead you to be hungrier and to eat more later on
try to choose whole grains – start by switching your toast in the morning
stay away from deep-fried appetizers and stick with fresh vegetables and low-fat dips

your child to share with the rest of the class we recommend healthy options
such as fruits and veggies, muffins, milk, 100% juice.

Good work by all.
Social Studies Grade 7
We are about to begin learning bout the early European colonies
in North America. The focus is on how the colonies aimed to
develop and to control the resources of this new land.
Social Studies Grade 8
We have learned how values and beliefs of people during the Re-
naissance began to change. In this next chapter, we will examine
how identity and citizenship grew out of the Renaissance. We
will also examine the spirit of exploration and how this led to the
European ideas of imperialism.
Social Studies Grade 99
Our next chapter focuses on Canada’s Charter of Rights and
Freedoms. We will examine this from the viewpoint of how well it
protects individual rights.
Language Arts Grade 9
The class has been working on the novel “Dare” by Marilyn Hal-
vorson. This novel deals with a 15 year od young man who lives in
Alberta and has to make some tough decisions about his life. All

CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES
The Career and Technology Studies class are working with various internet apps and programs this
month. These programs include Voki, Tagxedo, Glogster, Instagrok, and Survey Monkey. The students
will continue to be building their own digital portfolios as well, and storing their work into their
portfolios. The students are also accessing digital books in PDF form to read wherever they would like
at their convenience. We look forward to all the exciting things to come in Tech this month!
ENGLISH 20
The English 20 class has been working very hard on their recent Shakespearean play unit, Macbeth.
They are answering questions about the play and will be working on their “choice menu” assignments
shortly. Many of the students have created strong summaries of the play, which focused on building
structured paragraphs, sentence fluency, and enriched vocabulary. They have also been building their
choice menu assignments, which provide them an opportunity to choose between writing a journal
article and presenting a short play. Following their journal article or play, the students will perform a
debate to discuss the validity of the interpretation of their performance piece. Students are working
hard to prepare their debate’s key points. We look forward to seeing all of their wonderful ideas come
to life though their presentations and debates!
SOCIAL 20
The Social 20 class will be working towards our next big question, “To what extent should international-
ism be pursued?” In this unit, the students will focus on ideas such as nations, nation-states, and inter-
nationalism, as well as foreign policy, nationalism, and global issues surrounding internationalism.
Throughout this unit, the students will be viewing and reading about different historical and modern
day events that relate to the themes of the unit. They will also be answering a variety of questions about
the chapters they read and working towards building their “choice menu” assignments. I look forward
to hearing the students’ points of views, sharing ideas, and gaining the insight and opinions of the stu-
dents in a respectful manner.
ENGLISH 10
The English 10 class has been working very hard on their recent novel study unit, 1984. They are an-
swering questions about the novel and will be working on their “choice menu” assignments shortly.
Many of the students have created strong summaries of the story, which focused on building structured
paragraphs, sentence fluency, and enriched vocabulary. They have also been building their choice menu
assignments, which provide them an opportunity to choose between writing a journal article or present-
ing a short play. Following their journal article or play, the students will perform a debate to discuss the
validity of the interpretation of their performance piece. Students are working hard to prepare their de-
bate’s key points. We look forward to seeing all of their wonderful ideas come to life though their
