Over the past several years the Internet has expanded rapidly connecting millions of users and business together, and facilitating the emergence of a global on-line trading community. For instance, in 1993, there were 26,000 web sites and 3 million people on-line. By the end of 1999, there were over 5 million web sites and approximately 200 million people on-line worldwide!

The Internet has so rapidly revolutionized the ways we conduct business that it has propelled us into a new economic system we call the Internet Economy.

With over 65 million users going on-line monthly in North America -- nearly 1 billion web pages, creating over 1.2 million new jobs and over $110 billion in e-commerce since 1998 -- we are experiencing the tornado of transformation before our eyes!

You already suspect you must master this new domain to remain competitive. This class will give you the fundamental tools and knowledge to increase your office and employee productivity, reduce overhead, connect with your customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and increase your reach into new markets.Today/Tonight we will quickly cover Internet fundamentals and spend the bulk of this workshop to introduce you to web sites and tools that you can apply immediately to your own business!

Lets get started with a quick review.. And, by the way, all of the web sites that we mention in class are listed on a sheet in your class folder so you can reference them later.

When designing this class we set out to find web sites on the Internet that would be useful for businesses like yours. Well be showing you tools for your office, your employees, to enhance your communication and marketing power. The next set of slides are just a few examples of office tools that are available. We are not endorsing any of these sites, these are just examples.First, some office sites. The vast majority of people use the Internet for INFORMATION SEARCHING and COMMUNICATING VIA EMAIL. We can break this out into four areas.Research/News: The Internet is an excellent place to do research, looking up the latest news, researching equipment you need to buy, seeking out services for your company, finding out about your competitors, comparing prices, etc.Commerce: Traditional applications that you can do online (or might have already tried) include requesting a quote for services/products, personal on-line banking, purchasing air travel ticket, trading stocks, participating in auctions, buying books and CDs, arranging business printing, etc.Transactions: Traditional applications that you can do online (or might have already tried) include requesting a quote for services/products, personal on-line banking, purchasing air travel ticket, trading stocks, participating in auctions, buying books and CDs, arranging business printing, etc.Communications: With Internet access and e-mail, your business is open to your employees and customers 24/7. You can accelerate communication and making decisions.Research/News: Expand your Knowledge

The Internet is an excellent place to do research, looking up the latest news, researching equipment you need to buy, seeking out services for your company, finding out about your competitors, comparing prices, etc. Some news is personal. Do you drive to visit clients or have to commute like I do? Many TV stations and highway departments have put up so- called web cams on highways.

Here is an example of a web cam (a camera that takes still shots every 20 seconds or so) of the traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area*. http://www.kpix.com/traffic/ALL.htmlhttp://www.bayinsider.com/autos/livecams/http://www.bayinsider.com/autos/traffic/

*Change-out area for local community traffic.Put in i2i shopping cartCommerce: Traditional applications that you can do online (or might have already tried) include requesting a quote for services/products, purchasing air travel ticket, participating in auctions, arranging business printing, etc.Through these sites you can conduct complex transactions easily and confidently. Most trading platforms offer three flexible transaction methods: classified, auctions, and real time bid/ask exchanges within and across industries.Transactions: With a click of a button, you can securely pay bills and transfer funds. No more waiting in bank lines. Best of all, you can access your account day or night, from any Internet-enabled computer.Same thing with securities. You no longer need to phone your broker to buy and sell stock with on-line power you can do it yourself at a fraction of the cost!Communications: E-mail: All businesses have adopted email to quickly and efficiently communicate amongst employees as well as with clients anywhere in the world. Email has eliminated postage and long-distance overnight delivery and fax charges.File Transfer: Sending and receiving files are quick and easy when they are delivered over the Internet. Before we do our demonstration of a high speed connection, let me see, by a show of hands, how many of you currently have an Internet connection for your business. How many of you have a standard phone dial-up connection? How many have a high speed phone connection -- either ISDN or DSL?Ok, great. Can you imagine how you could substantially cut down on the time spent researching, downloading and sending information if you had a high speed line?Lets compare a standard phone dial-up connection against a high speed, always-on connection.Canned SPEED DEMOhttp://computingcentral.msn.com/topics/bandwidth/howfast.asp
