CHARACTERZ Fun way to review the 5 methods of characterization

-physical description

-thoughts/feelings

-words

-actions

-what other characters say about them

Choose one novel from your group.

Write the names of characters on notecards, then staple them onto border strips.

Trade with another group.

WITHOUT LOOKING, put on your character headband

In your groups, ask yes/no questions aligned to each method. “Am I a boy?” “In the beginning of the book, am I afraid of

Boo Radley?” “Do I work as a lawyer?”

Guess your character within 5 guesses, win 5 bonus points for your team!

TABLEAUChoose one novel per group.

Identify a moment in the plot that captures the essence of the novel.

Create a tableau – a frozen moment in time – for that scene.

Think about:

characters to portray – what traits can you show, how can you make relationships clear?

the mood of the scene – how will you convey the mood via body language and facial expressions?

For every group that correctly guesses your novel, you earn 5 points for your team!

MAKE A COOTIE CATCHERReview of “big idea,”

characters, and textual evidence. Choose a “big idea” in your text.

Choose four quotations that connect to that idea. (For our activity, paraphrase moments.)

Choose two characters that are somehow related to each moment. (8 total)

Now…it’s up to you to figure out how to put all those things into your cootie catcher!

Have a solution? Show a CRL for points!

Names Matter!
