A day after he chaired a review meeting with district officials, Puro- hit, along with Minister for Municipal Administration S P Velumani, today visited the solid waste management plant installed in an residential society in the industrial city. Post the visit, he held discussions with NGOs and residents welfare associations working on solid waste management. During the meeting, he lauded the efforts of the city in Swachch Bharath Mission and congratulated the officials of the Coimbatore Corporation and the district administration for their initiatives. Earlier in the day, he inspected the Gandhipuram bus stand and took part in a cleaning drive there as part of the Swachch Bharath intitiative. He swept the bus bays and re- moved the waste from there. He also inspected e-toilets in the bus stand. ‘I have been carrying out inspections from yesterday. A few are trying to cre- ate controversies from my visit. Only when I visit the places I will know about the works that are being carried out and give feedback to the government. Till now I thought that Maharashtra was better in cleanliness, but now I have changed my mind as Tamilnadu is far better,’ he added. It may be noted that Purohit yester- day evening held a meeting with the top officials of the Coimbatore district, including Collector T N Hariharan and Corporation Commissioner K Vijay- akarthikeyan, triggering a political outcry from Opposition leaders who charged that the meeting was an as- sault on the State’s autonomy. Purohit had come to Coimbatore to attend the convocation ceremony at the Bharathiar University in his capac- ity as its Chancellor. Stalin, TTV slam Several opposition leaders have said that the Governor’s visit will af- fect the autonomy of the State. DMK working president and Leader of Opposition M K Stalin said that the Governor should give up making such visits. ‘His visits will no way help the State-Central relationship. Tamilnadu Governor does not even have the limited powers which the Puducherry Governor has,’ he said. He further said that if the Governor wants to streamline the administra- tion then he should ask Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to prove majority in the Assembly.’ Puducherry Chief Minister Naray- answamy said that the ‘disease’ of Governor interfering in the work of elected government has spreaded to Tamilnadu as well. TNCC president S Thirunavukkarasar, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, CPI(M) and CPI too are opposed to the Governor’s action. Similarly, expelled AIADMK leader TTV Dhinakaran said that the interfer- ence of the Governor in the State ad- ministration will bring the government to a standstill just like in Puducherry and New Delhi. He said Jayalalithaa would never allowed such a move. Ministers justify Purohit On the other hand, Tamilnadu Min- isters have said that the visits made by the Governor will not affect the State autonomy. Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that there is no politics involved in the Governor’s visit and the State’s autonomy will be held at all cost. In the meantime, S P Velumani said that Governor has assured to get all the Central scheme to the State. He further added that the Governor inspected the various projects that were completed in the State-Central collobration in Coimbatore. He also said that there is nothing wrong in he inspections carried out by the Governor. Likewise, Higher Education Minister K P Anbalagan contended that the Governor’s action would not amount to interference in administration. Ve- lumani has also made a similar remark. The weather system is expected bring heavy rains over Coastal And- hra Pradesh and north Tamilnadu may get light rain with one or two moderate spells. The weather will remain partly cloudy to cloudy from now on, with Chennai surpassing its monthly aver- age rainfall within the first 14 days. Satellite pictures on Tuesday evening showed that clouds spread out from Chennai to Nellore, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Brah- mapur, Puri and Bhubaneshwar. Heavier clouds waited at some distance out into the sea. Meanwhile, the Water Resources Department has sent notice to 1,400 houses built close to the bunds of Adyar river. According to sources, officials are waiting for orders from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). ‘The illegal transactions found during the marathon raids are huge and they come under the limits of the ED,’ sources said. Meanwhile, the I-T department has been conducting inquiry with several persons at its office in Nun- gambakkam. This morning, the gen- eral manager of Jaya TV, Natarajan, came for inquiry. Ilavarasi’s daugh- ters- Krishnapriya and Shakeela and their husbands-Karthikeyan Kaliya- perumal and Rajarajan, respectively, appeared for questioning before the IT department. Ilavarasi is the sister- in-law of Sasikala. Both Ilavarasi and Sasikala are now lodged in a Karanataka jail in a disproportionate assets case. It maybe noted that Sasikala stayed at Krishnapriya’s house in T Nagar when she came out on her five day parole recently. The I-T team has reportedly found that Sasikala trans- ferred nearly Rs 600 crore worth properties to other persons during this time.
