Alumni Reunions are a cherished tradition at Punahou and you will play an

essential role in bringing this year’s celebrations to life.

Whether this is your first Punahou Reunion or the latest of many, we want

it to be unforgettable. Over the coming months, you will reconnect with old

friends and undoubtedly discover new ones as your reunion year unfolds.

Thanks to your leadership and generous commitment of time and effort, the magic of Alumni

Week invigorates countless others.

Reunion planning is also a chance to reconnect with the School, and we invite you to learn

about the changes at Punahou since you were last here. We are reimagining our learning

environments with a new neighborhood for grades 2 – 5 and the K – 12 Learning Commons,

which advance a bold new instructional philosophy for the 21st century. These are just some

of the priorities that our comprehensive fundraising campaign Ku‘u Punahou is making possible.

All Reunion giving is counted within this campaign, which is central to realizing Punahou’s

promise as a global educational leader.

But even with these exciting changes, when you return to campus you will be transported back

in time by many beloved spaces and relationships that remain the same. Our talented and

close-knit alumni community is one of the School’s greatest treasures and Reunion is a time to

PUNAHOU ALUMNI REUNION

The Alumni Reunion Week is an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, honor and give back to Punahou. It is a time tocelebrate personal milestones and, whether near or far, Punahou alumni renew friendships as they reminisce about theirschool days.

Giving back to Punahou through reunion class gifts is a time-honored tradition that is essential to the fiscal health of theSchool. Reunion class committees work year-round to create a memorable Alumni Reunion Week, filled with class activitiesand events that showcase the School initiatives and celebrate the individuals who perpetuate the legacy of the School. Theweek culminates with the Alumni Lu-‘au, which honors the 50th Reunion Class and is hosted by the 24th Reunion Class.

Ku-puna Lu-‘au Wednesday, June 7, 2017 A special luncheon held on campus to recognize the ku-punaclasses celebrating their 65th, 70th, 75th and 80th reunions.A time to reminisce, rekindle friendships and view classmemorabilia.

Alumni Celebration Thursday, June 8, 2017 Alumni are welcomed to campus with an opportunity toview alumni achievements in art and publishing. The highlight of this evening will include the presentation of reunion class gifts to President Jim Scott ’70. All Punahoualumni are welcome.

Alumni Day of ServiceThursday, June 8, 2017Alumni have the opportunity to participate in service projects that Punahou students experience during the schoolyear. Committees may also coordinate other class-specificservice projects.

Alumni Lu-‘au and the 50th Reunion Class Saturday, June 10, 2017The 2017 Punahou Alumni Lu- ‘au celebrates classes endingin 2 or 7 and honors the 50th Reunion Class of 1967.

On Lu- ‘au Day, the honored 50th Reunion Class attends aspecial memorial service followed by a reception hosted byPresident Jim ’70 and Mrs. Maureen Dougherty ’71 Scott.The 50th Reunion Class then marches to the Lu- ‘au grounds,welcomed by cheering Academy student volunteers.

The 24th Reunion Class Lu- ‘au Hosts prepare a traditional lu- ‘au, decorate the tents and welcome guests. More than2,500 reunion alumni gather to enjoy the ‘ono food and entertainment.

REUNION COMMITTEE OVERVIEW

The Class Reunion Committee works closely with the Reunion Team in Alumni Relations. The Office of Alumni Relationssupports and guides the Committee throughout the year. Punahou suggests organizing a reunion committee comprised of adiverse group of classmates to plan Alumni Week class activities and to inspire the generosity of classmates to pay it forwardwith a class gift. Each reunion committee will be asked to identify chair(s) to lead the activity and gift initiatives.

To help achieve this goal, each member of the Reunion Committee will receive CONFIDENTIAL class contact lists to be used solely for communication regarding Punahou School and the committee, and/or volunteer activities on behalf ofPunahou School.

All committee members are required to sign a Punahou School Alumni Volunteer Statement of Confidentiality Agreementand submit it to the Reunion Team. Punahou values its relationship with alumni and the School does its best to protect theconfidentiality of personal information.

Reunion committees meet at Punahou facilities approximately once a month throughout the year. All events and meetingsheld at Punahou are arranged through Reunion Team members.

Class websites and social media are effective means of commu-nicating reunion activities to classmates. THE CLASS FACEBOOK PAGE

Many reunion classes have seen increased attendance andsubstantial gift donations because of creative Facebook initiatives. Class Facebook pages will be included in thealumni notes section of the Punahou Bulletin. If the class doesnot have a Facebook page, the Reunion Team can assist you.

SHARING WITH INSTAGRAM

Instagram has become the go-to platform for quickly shar-ing event photos, and using it with classmates throughoutthe reunion planning process and during Alumni Week is encouraged. #PunahouReunion

BUDGET AND PAYMENT PROCEDURES

Alumni Relations provides reimbursement and payment request procedures for vendor payment and class memberreimbursements. Payment to caterers, private clubs, merchandise vendors and other vendors needing paymentwill be made through Punahou School with the proper invoices. Some vendors may accept a purchase order or willbill directly to Punahou School. The Reunion Team can advise the best course of payment.

If there are more bills than available funds, it is the committee’sresponsibility to pay these bills. It is imperative that the ReunionCommittee carefully considers what to charge per person foreach event. In order to comfortably cover event expenses,allow padding for unanticipated expenses for each event.

CLASS MEMORIAL SERVICE

Memorial services are a special way to remember deceasedclassmates. Memorial services can be held during AlumniWeek at any class-specific events.

50th Reunion Class: Thurston Memorial Chapel is reservedfrom 2:30 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. for the 50th Reunion Class.

Older classes have priority to reserve the Chapel and the LilyPond Pergola for a 4:30 p.m. memorial service.

Classes having services in the Chapel are required to providemedia, i.e., DVD or PowerPoint, to the Reunion Team onemonth prior to the service. Rehearsal time will be scheduledwith Punahou’s AV technicians two to three weeks prior toAlumni Week.

CLASS MERCHANDISE

If a class would like to design and produce class logo itemsfor purchase or to give away, please review the PunahouTrademark Guidelines at www.punahou.edu/trademarks fordetails and an approved vendor list.

CLASS PHOTO

Formal Class photos are taken at Punahou on Lu- ‘au Day.The Reunion Team will assist in scheduling with your committee. 65th Reunion and older will be photographed atthe Ku-puna Lu- ‘au.

CLASS SERVICE PROJECTS

During Alumni Week, alumni have the opportunity to participate in environmental stewardship projects that Punahou students experience during the school year. Class reunion committees may also coordinate other class-specific service projects.

OTHER SCHOOL SERVICES

All committee members, please contact Alumni Relations forrequests to the following campus departments: PhysicalPlant, Food Services, Chapel, Archives, Video ProductionDepartment (VPD) and Visual Production Center (VPC).

PAYMENT/REIMBURSEMENT PROCEDURE:

» Activity Chair(s)/Treasurer will approve all requests forreimbursements or payments for class reunion expenses.Costs incurred by the Reunion Committee will only bereimbursed with prior approval.

» Committee members should submit original itemizedcash register receipts along with payment request formsto the class Treasurer for reimbursements. Photocopies ofreceipts and credit card approval slips that do not listitems purchased will not be accepted.

» Class Treasurer will submit approved vendor invoices andclass reimbursement requests to Alumni Relations forprocessing.

» Reimbursements are paid by check and require a minimum of 10 – 14 business days for processing. Do not submit requests by email or fax.

» All requests must be submitted for processing by June 20, 2017.

REUNION GIFT INFORMATION

Honoring and giving back to Punahou is very much a partof the Reunion tradition. Reunions represent a significantopportunity to reconnect with old friends as well as Punahou.Over the decades, reunion class gifts have supported building campaigns, endowments for financial aid, specificcurricular and faculty programs, created special areas oncampus and supported the operation of the School.

Reunion giving is essential to the fiscal health of Punahouand an integral part of sustaining Punahou’s financial equilibrium: balancing educational vision with fiscal responsibility. Punahou’s vision includes creating a culture ofconsistent annual giving to The Punahou Fund and growingthe endowment.

Roles and Responsibilities

GIFT CHAIR(S)

Punahou alumni carry on a tradition of giving that has made an extraordinary difference to the School. Each reunionclass raises funds towards meeting a goal determined by theReunion Committee. The primary effort of the Gift Chair(s)is to lead the Reunion Committee in raising money for the Class Gift.

Goals:» Organize a targeted strategy to inspire class support of reunion giving

» Increase giving participation» Identify top 10 percent of classmates with potential for giving

» Each committee member to solicit 10 people on behalf ofthe class to result in a gift or pledge before the end of thereunion cycle

Responsibilities:» Set goals for prospecting and fundraising» Recruit gift committee members» Manage the drafting of two direct-appeal letters» Personally contribute to the Class Gift by December 31» Solicit commitment from all reunion committee membersfor their personal contribution by December 31

» Lead the Reunion Committee and other efforts to encourage participation

» Structure “ask strategies” for committee members to personally solicit the top 10 percent of the class

» Communicate goals, update and involve Reunion Committee and Reunion Giving staff

» Liaise with Reunion Giving staff to coordinate meetingsand, in some cases, work closely with Major Gifts Officersto help solicit larger gifts

YOUR CLASS GIFT

Reunion classes are acknowledged and celebrated for themany ways that alumni choose to support Punahou throughthe Class Gift, which encompasses all gifts received andpledges during the reunion year. Gifts to The PunahouFund, Endowed Funds, Capital Projects, as well as plannedgifts, are included in your reunion class gift total.

Periodic updates will be provided to committee members regarding the status of the class gift and components of classgiving throughout the year.

ALL GIFTS AND PLEDGES COUNT with any gift to thefollowing being included.

» The Punahou Fund (formerly known as Living Endow-ment and the Annual Fund) was originally established byalumni in 1941 to help generate yearly support for theSchool.

» Endowed Funds which can be restricted to financial aid,programs such as science, Hawaiiana or music, or can beunrestricted, providing support for the School’s highestpriorities. Since the first endowed financial aid fund wasestablished in 1859, the number of funds has grown tomore than 650.

» Capital Projects including grades 2 – 5 neighborhood andthe K – 12 Learning Commons.

» Planned Gifts include any planned or deferred gifts initiated or first advised to Punahou in the reunion yearor since the previous reunion.

Reunion class gifts are reported in the Punahou Bulletin and“Giving to Punahou,” the School’s annual report, wherenames are listed in the appropriate donor club but a specificdollar amount is not included in any communication.

Gifts are counted from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Pleasekeep in mind there is a two to three day processing time.

TIPS FOR ASKING

Reunion committee members are not just asking for money.You are asking your classmates to support the mission ofPunahou. Fundraising volunteers are willing to spend thetime and effort to help organizations that they truly believein and make personal contributions to, as well as asking others to do the same. Asking someone to give directly saysthree things: You’re committed to Punahou; Punahou is important; and your classmate is important to Punahou.

JUST ASK!

Be Prepared» Make your own stretch commitment by December 31.» Think about the classmate you are going to solicit. Review any information you have about your classmate.(Family, interests, employment, prior giving, etc.)

» Call or email to arrange a visit, if needed.» Should anyone else be involved?» Have an ask amount in mind. BE BOLD, not apologetic.» Anticipate any possible objections.

THE ASK

Whether the ask is taking place in person, over the phone,in an email, text or via social media like Facebook, keep thefollowing in mind:

To Start» Be relaxed, and stay on point.» Discuss the class gift goal, your involvement with thecommittee and upcoming reunion. Classmates are motivated by your enthusiasm and commitment and,most importantly, your relationship with them.

Be Direct» You may want to let your classmate know what kind ofgift you made to the class.

» Ask for a specific amount. Try not to undersell theamount. For example, “Would you consider a gift of$10,000?”

» If meeting in person or over the phone, give your classmate time to respond once you have asked.

» If the amount sounds too high, let your classmate knowthere are many ways to structure a gift. For example,monthly, quarterly or annual payments called “multi-yearpledges” may sound more appealing depending on his orher financial situation. These pledges also are a good wayto sustain alumni giving during nonreunion years.

» A participation gift is also greatly appreciated in anyamount which will help reach the class goal.

Be Appreciative» No matter how the conversation ends, be appreciative ofyour classmate.

» Thank them for their time and for considering a gift toyour class.

» Let them know that you hope they will attend the Reunion festivities in June.

If more information is requested by your classmate to helpmake a decision, contact the Reunion Giving team and follow up promptly with another invitation to participate.

KEYS TO SUCCESS

The keys to a successful Class Gift are participation, pledgesand gift planning.

PARTICIPATION

A gift to Punahou is appreciated no matter what the size.

Examples:The Class of 1984 asked classmates to give $19.84 to participate in their Class Gift. Gifts in the amount of$19.84, $84 and $1,984 were received.

PLEDGES

Pledges are gifts given over a multi-year period and sustainalumni-giving levels during nonreunion years. Encourageclassmates who give consistently each year to make a five-year pledge. Pledges may be broken down into monthly,quarterly or annual payments. The total pledge amount willcount toward the Class Gift.

If your classmate already gives $150 every year and they pledgeit over 5 years, that equals $750 toward the Class Gift.

$500 x 5 years = $2,500 toward Class Gift$1,000 x 5 years = $5,000 toward Class Gift

Example:One class created a list of “Leadership Donors.” Thesedonors pledged $5,000 over 5 years. They were recognizedon their class letter as “Leadership Donors.” This approachnot only makes your goal more reachable, but will sustainalumni giving during nonreunion years.

GIFT PLANNING OPTIONS FOR CLASS GIFT CREDIT

Gift planning is knowing what, how, and when to give. Carefulgift planning combines financial estate, and tax planning tech-niques that enable you to make gifts with greater impact, oftenwith significant tax and financial rewards to you and your family.

You may find that you are able to make a larger gift than youthought possible with a revocable gift that Punahou receivesthrough a will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy.Life income gifts can provide you with immediate tax benefitsand income for life.

Do you have appreciated assets that are low yield? Planning for retirement?

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY (CGA)

Support Punahou while receiving fixed income for life – forup to two annuitants – and significant tax benefits. In mostcases, part of each annuity payment is tax-free, increasingeach payment’s after-tax value.

DEFERRED CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

Recommended for younger donors to meet their future financial needs. Defer annuity payments and receive largerpayments later to supplement retirement needs when needed. As with an immediate CGA, a portion of the payment is tax-free.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER ANNUITY TRUST

Make a larger gift of cash, securities, or real property and receive fixed annual payments now and benefit Punahoulater. If using an appreciated asset, avoid paying capital-gaintax on the sale of the asset.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER UNITRUST

Make a larger gift of cash, securities or real property and create a flexible source of income for the rest of your life.Re-valued annually to allow possible increases in paymentsto you over time.

Retain control of your assets today and help Punahou tomorrow

BEQUEST

Include Punahou in a will or living trust to retain controlover your assets during your lifetime and direct your bequestto a particular purpose in the future that is meaningful to you.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION

Name Punahou as a beneficiary of a portion or all of yourlife insurance policy or retirement plan account(s). Simplylist Punahou School (Tax ID#99-0073523) on your benefi-ciary designation form, which can easily be requested fromyour agent or plan administrator.

To give online, please go to www.punahou.edu/givenow. Gifts can be made by credit card through a secure paymentsystem. To qualify for a 2016 tax deduction, the charge mustbe processed no later than midnight December 31, 2016 EST.

CREDIT CARD

Punahou accepts Visa, Mastercard and American Express.Gifts can be made by calling the Advancement Office at808.944.3583, completing the class gift form mailed in thefall and spring, or going online (listed above). To qualify fora 2016 tax deduction, the charge must be processed no laterthan midnight December 31, 2016 EST.

CHECK

Make checks payable to Punahou School and mail toPunahou School, Class Gift, 1601 Punahou Street, Honolulu, HI 96822. Indicate on the check, reply form or in a separate note howthe gift should be directed. To qualify for a 2016 tax deduction, gifts need to be postmarked no later than December 31, 2016.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many donors’ gifts qualify for matching gifts from contributing employers, either present or past, or throughboard membership. This is a tremendous benefit that cangreatly expand individual contributions to Punahou. To seeif a company provides matching gifts or to obtain a matching gift form, contact the company’s corporate humanresources office. TRANSFER APPRECIATED SECURITIES

ABOUT PUNAHOU

Punahou School is an independent, coeducational day

school founded in 1841 with a student body of 3,750 from

kindergarten through grade 12. Punahou is the largest

independent school on a single campus in the United States.

The senior class typically numbers around 425 students.

The Punahou campus reflects its long history and tradition

of excellence in its physical plant. It includes buildings from

the 19th century as well as 21st-century facilities designed as

age-appropriate learning environments. The newest build-

ings on campus have been designed to meet the U.S. Green

Building Council’s Platinum certification for Leadership in

Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Two specialized

centers on campus, the Luke Center for Public Service and

the Wo International Center, support curriculum and serve

the broader community.

Punahou maintains a commitment to diversity of its student

body. Admission to Punahou is highly competitive. School-

wide, there are typically 2,100 applications for approxi-

mately 500 spaces. Financial aid is available to students with

demonstrated need and is funded by over 400 individual

scholarships.
