Coming events

October Week 2 Thursday 21 Yr 7/8 Technology Camp and Friday 22 Friday 22 Yr 5 Assembly

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The secondary campus was abuzz with students from across Rotary District 967 on Sunday. A new batch of Rotary Exchange students from Merewether to Wellington converged on Merriwa to gear up for next years exchange program. Congratulations to Merriwa Rotary Club for its ongoing success, and commitment to the youth exchange program. Administration building nears completion The primary administration building funded under the Federal Governments Building Education Revolution (BER) program is nearing completion. The new facility will replace the “temporary” administration demountable building which has been on site for over 20 years. The new facility will provide a reception area for parents, improved workspace for office staff, interview room, principal’s office, purpose built sick bay, disabled shower and toilets, staff room, and storage areas. Once the construction is completed modifications will be needed to the new school entrance point, and adjoining playground areas. The demountable will be removed and the site regenerated. It is anticipated that the handover will take place at the end of November. Staff are in the process of preparing for the move. During this period of transition the primary office will be out of action and calls will be directed to the secondary campus.

Kinder Orientation The Kindergarten orientation program will continue this term under the coordination of Kristen Pringle. It has now been confirmed that due to Miss Maher’s maternity leave, Miss Rebecca Pascoe will take K/1 in 2011. We were very pleased to hear of Miss Maher’s birth of a healthy baby boy. Miss Pascoe will join Miss Pringle and the new Kindergarten students in the orientation program over the coming weeks.

Safety awareness Police Liaison Officer Sheree Gray visited the primary and secondary campuses last week in her role supporting youth. Sheree spent the

morning at Preschool with a very flash patrol car which I’m sure impressed Miss Jill. Sheree will return to the primary campus later in the term to talk to students about personal safety and safe places. The Police no longer use the “Stranger Danger” language when discussing personal safety to children.

Senior Study Senior students have a flexible timetable with inbuilt study periods. This allows students to undertake a range of learning activities at school, work, through distance education and TAFE. It is anticipated that all students will use these study periods effectively. It is an opportunity to review work covered in class, prepare assessment tasks, catch up on work missed due to traineeship work placement, and a chance to seek clarification from teachers. The senior study is used by students for this purpose, and students can access the library and internet facilities when required. It is no longer school policy for students to arrive late, or leave early as some may have done in the past. Our ongoing school focus remains on raising expectations and academic standards.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 5?

Quilt Raffle Congratulations to Janet Taylor, the lucky winner of the beautiful quilt that was very kindly donated by Mrs Diane Byfield. A very big thankyou must go to Di of Di’s Clothing Patch for displaying the quilt and selling tickets and especially to Wendy Hobday for the time she spent selling tickets in the main street on weekends and at the Merriwa Show. The money raised will go towards the Year 4, 5 and 6 Canberra Excursion in Week 7. Wendy is also running a treat day at the Primary and Secondary Campuses where she will be selling ice-cream cones to raise more money for the Canberra Excursion. More information about this at a later date…..

Miss Rebecca Pascoe Year 5 Teacher

Mr Johnston When the Fife band goes to practice, Mr Johnston comes. He teaches us to be nice and work together. It’s loads of fun because we do things like obstacle courses and football. I think Miss Pascoe likes it too. Last time he forgot his hat, and had to wear Miss Pascoe’s pink hat.

Ross Proctor

The Ag Plot Every Tuesday the Year 5 and 6 boys go up to the Secondary Campus to the Ag Plot. Mrs Harding teaches us. Last week we looked at the chickens and the cows. We were seeing if the electric fence was on, but it wasn’t. We also picked mulberries off the mulberry tree. It was really fun.

Taylor Cox

Fife This year some Year 5 children have been having Fife lessons with Mrs Kershaw. We practice ‘Kookaburra’ and ‘Grand Old Duke of York’. I have been going really well. I first started off not making a sound but now I am marching and playing the Fife with my friends.

Tiger Rawlings

Choir Every Monday after Recess, some children from Years 3 to 6 do choir in the library with Adam who is from the Conservatorium of Music. Some songs we’ve been learning are ‘Sk8er Boy’, ‘Rip, Rip Woodchip’, ‘The Winding Murray River’ and a few more. We all have a lot of fun. Thanks Adam!

Breanna Goodear

Canberra In Week 7 Years 4, 5 and 6 are going to Canberra. I am very excited about going. Wendy Hobday (my mum) will be having a treat day in November to raise money for the excursion. We will be going to the War Memorial and heaps of other places.

Chloe Ponsford

Miss Moore Last Tuesday the Year 5 and 6 girls went to the library after lunch with Miss Moore to talk about ‘No One is Perfect’. First we had a look at Hannah Montana singing ‘No One is Perfect’. Then we were given the song and we read through it. After we read it, we sang the song. Miss Moore gave us the song to practice over the weekend.

END OF TERM EXCURSION TO MAITLAND GAOL AND “TOMORROW, WHEN THE

WAR BEGAN”

On 24 September 2010, students from Years 9 through to 11 participated in an excursion going to Maitland Gaol and to see the movie, “Tomorrow, When the War Began”.

We began with an early start, leaving at 7 am. We drove non-stop to Maitland Gaol, and arrived there ready for the tour. After a quick stretch, we walked up to the gates and our tour guide, Mack, let us in.

After a quick introduction, he started by explaining things that happened at the gates. As he told us about an image of a face of an executed inmate in a slab of glass, we temporarily lost Eli as he passed out. Mr March took him into the office and both of them missed the whole tour!

Once that incident was over, our guide took us to A wing. He showed us what some of the cells were used for, some famous inmates who were there and history of the wing. He also took us outside into the exercise areas. We found this all very interesting as Mack kept us involved in the tour, constantly asking for volunteers.

From then on, Mack showed us B wing and C wing, and told many stories from the rich history of the gaol. He also took us through the art gallery which shows very impressive artwork created by inmates. Next to that was the shower blocks, and Mack pointed out where and how 6 inmates escaped the gaol through the venting system.

We then went to the cooking blocks where Mack explained that working in the cooking block was one of the best jobs in the Gaol, he also told us some stories of what inmates could do to your food if you weren’t liked. He also told a story of when an inmate pushed an officer’s face onto one of the hot plates.

Next was 5 Wing, the maximum security cell block. Although it didn’t operate for long, Mack still had many stories to tell of the inmates.

Our Year 5 and 6 students will shortly begin a creative problem-solving program as part of their mathematics learning. The children will be placed into one of three groups depending on their problem-solving ability, and work through a series of strategies that come from the Working Mathematically section of the mathematics syllabus. The program will allow the children to apply their knowledge of mathematics to solve problems, and to increase their ability to read word problems.

Please remember that sport has now changed to Wednesdays for this term except during swim school which will operate during Weeks 6 and 7 of the term.

MERRIWA CENTRAL SCHOOL After that, Mack took us to the visitors centre, where inmates were able to see their friends and family. Mack also explained some of the methods used by the visitors to transfer items to the inmates. Some of the ways were extremely clever and cunning.

Just as our tour ended, we were rejoined by Mr March and Eli, who had experienced the video tour 6 times. After thanking Mack, we made our way back to the bus to drive to Singleton MacDonald’s for lunch.

After eating McDonald’s out, we all got on the bus to go to watch Tomorrow When the War Began based on the books by John Marsden. We were looking forward to this as we had already read and studied the first book back in Term 1, which we all thoroughly enjoyed, and many of us went on to read the next 7 books.

We all got off the bus and headed into the Cinema, Mr March paid for our tickets and all the students headed for the food. Toilets were a must before the movie. We all headed to Theatre 3. It was Years 9, 10, 11, Mr Johnston, Mr March, Mrs Vidler and 2 other people who filled the theatre.

I’m sure for every student there it was as exciting and thrilling as the book; the special effects were amazing along with the actors. Because it was an Australian film it made it that much more exciting to watch knowing that some scenes were filmed from places we drive past mostly every month. A scene from the film was all based around the Luskintyre Bridge near Greta and Lochinvar. They filmed many scenes there but didn’t blow that bridge up; they made a replica. There were many other places around the Hunter Valley, including Dungog and Raymond Terrace, where they shot many more scenes. Mr March was more excited about telling us about it than all the students were.

The movie is one of Australia’s greats and everyone here is hoping they make the series by John Marston. So thank you Mr Johnston and Mr March for taking us to Maitland Gaol and Singleton Cinema to watch Tomorrow When the War Began.

YEAR 9/10 PAPANUI VISIT

On Wednesday 13 October, Merriwa Central year 9/10 Ag class went to Papanui Open Range Egg Farm. When we arrived at the farm, the owner, Mark Killen, introduced himself and told us a little bit about his farm and how it operates.

The visit to Papanui to see first-hand how the farm operates was a valuable learning experience. Here is what some of the students said about their experience: “I learnt that Papanui has 250 head of cattle that the hens follow around. The hens sleep in renovated school buses, and that there is 220 kilometres of fencing on Papanui. There are 16 paddocks that feed into a watering trough, that Mark moves his cattle and hens around.” – Amy Nicholls

“It was good to see chooks in their healthy environment. The maremma dogs are really cool and nice and they had a really cool smile and did their jobs well. It was interesting to see how Mark converted buses into chook houses. It was a good idea to have the cows and the chickens working together with the chickens fertilising the ground and the cows eating the tall grass and exposing the bugs.” – Tyler Austin

“I found out that the chickens sleep in renovated school buses, and that he moves the chooks at night when they go to bed. He moves them around after the cattle to fertilise the ground.” – Zoi Russell

“It was very informative and I learned a lot. It was a great experience.” – Stephanie Sills

“It was very interesting and I liked the dog that smiled.” – Kate Elbourn

“It was a great experience and future Ag classes should all get the opportunity to see how Papanui operates.” – Jade McConnell

“Papanui was an amazing experience, and I would recommend this farm visit to any others who are interested in the poultry industry.” – Megan Wightman

“It was good and it was interesting how they used buses to house the chickens.” – Charlie Kirk

Without the organisation by Mrs Harding and the cooperation of Mark and Di Killen of Papanui, this excursion wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you.

Assembly On Friday 15 October we held our first Assembly of the Term. It has been quite some time since we have had the opportunity to hold one. It was wonderful to see so many parents, grandparents and community members attend our assembly. We all appreciate you taking the time to come but I know the children especially love having you all there to celebrate the great work they have been doing in class.

For our item the children prepared and demonstrated some games they think should be included in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. We had planned to have our Assembly under the COLA but due to the weather we had to have it inside. Therefore we had to make a couple of alterations to our games to make them more suitable for indoor play. Nothing like a few last minute alterations!

The games that were demonstrated included; Archery Bullseye, Quoit Throwing and Ball Throwing. The Primary Students prepared a speech outlining the equipment needed to play each game and how they are played, while the infants children took the opportunity to showcase how the games are played.

Kinder Transition – Term 4 2010 What a wonderful time we all had at our first Kindergarten Transition session. It was wonderful to meet our perspective Kindergarten students for next year. We spent the afternoon playing games, getting to know each other and enjoying stories. Thank you to all parents who had the hard task of leaving their child for the first time at ‘Big School’. I can certainly appreciate how hard that can be and I must say you all did very well.

We look forward to seeing you all again this Wednesday 20 October at 2pm.

Active After Schools Program As mentioned in last weeks Ringer our Active After Schools Program is starting again this term and our first session will be this Wednesday 20 October.

This term we will be learning tennis skills. We have been lucky enough to be offered some guidance from Loretta Cooper, a Merriwa Community Member, who has skills in this area. As these session are unable to be run at school the following arrangements have been made: Travel to Cassilis Tennis Courts - Parents

are asked to come and pick students up from school as they usually would and transport their own children to the tennis courts straight after school.

Digital Story Telling Workshop In week 5 on Monday 8, Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 we will be having Leah Martin visit our school to run a workshop on digital story telling for our students and teachers. This workshop is funded through CAP (Country Area Program) funds. The Country Areas Program (CAP) is an equity program designed to assist schools and their communities to enhance the learning outcomes and educational opportunities for students in geographically isolated areas.

Leah Martin is our relieving Local consultant and has generously offered to run this workshop for us. This is a great opportunity for our school children.

Our school is very fortunate to be on this program and receives a lot of funding from it. Leah will be running a parent information session about CAP on Tuesday 9 October. This will give parents a clearer understanding about what CAP is and what we can use CAP funds for in our school. We hope you can spare some time to come and be involved in this parent information afternoon.

K -2 News Spelling and Sound Work This week Kinder will be revising the ‘Pp’ Sound. Year 1 will be looking at the ‘nk’ sound and Year 2 will be looking at the end sound ‘sn’. Year 1 Tricky Words are ‘once’ and ‘upon’ and Year 2 Tricky Words are ‘birthday’ and ‘gran’.

Science and Technology Last week in Science and Technology, students helped their new friend Wallace the worm to gain his memory back by writing an information report about worms. This report will later be published and included in a class book titled k-2’s Adventures with Wallace the Worm. This week students will be looking at worm farms and how they are made. This gained knowledge will help students when it comes time to create the school worm farm.

Health Last week in health students began looking at their similarities and differences and why it is good to be different. Students began planning a poem titled ‘All about me’ and will complete their poems in health this week.

Raffle Awards - Infants Room The homework award this week went to Brady Nairne and the good behaviour award went to Lauren Corr. Congratulations and keep up the good work!

ST JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

What a week it has been for our school community this week. The children and teachers have returned fresh and ready for a term of excited learning. The St Joseph’s school community offer our sympathy and prayers to the Towell family following their tragic loss. Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop: A very special Liturgy was held in our new assembly room last Friday in anticipation of the canonisation of Australia’s first saint and founder of the St Joseph’s Order of Sisters in Australia . The room was packed to capacity by children and their parents, grandparents and friends. We prayed and listened to accounts of the life lead by Mary. Again we were reminded of the very kind and hard working person she was. We are always grateful for the effort Mary MacKillop put into establishing the Order of St Josephs who has gone on to have a wonderful role in our school for 126 years. Mary MacKillop is famous for saying that you should never see a need without doing something about it. This is the call to action of our own school motto. We are very proud that Mary MacKillop is being recognised around the world for the wonderful person that she was. Father Des blessed the Sisters of St Joseph – Srs Mary and Brigid and we thanked them for the tremendous work they have done in our community as well as in many other communities before us. Fr Des also blessed the teachers for their work in continuing the tradition of St Joseph’s Schools.

The new room was then dedicated by Father Des to Mary, the world’s newest saint, and from now will be known as the Mary MacKillop Room. Sr Brigid presented each student with a photo card which contained a different inspirational saying of Mary MacKillop. What a wonderful gesture. Luke Cronin presented the school with a special Mary MacKillop tree to plant in our garden. Thank you Luke.

The first Saturday of the holidays was of course the opening of the Gummun Place activities room. Thank you to the band of trusty chi ldren who formed a Guard of Honor for Her Excellency Marie Bashir, the NSW

Governor. They looked beautiful in their full uniform. The children were certainly not disappointed with their efforts as the Governor took time out to personally speak to each child and thank them for being there. It was a very proud moment when Her Excellency described the group in her speech as “exquisite children”. The ceremony was lovely and it was wonderful to see the residents of Gummun Place so happy with their new facility. Congratulations to all who have been involved in this great project. Thank you to James Hagley, Glynn Carter, Oliver and Chloe Towell, Lauren Redgate and their parents and grandparents for their assistance in getting them to the ceremony.

What a wonderful day the children and their parents had during the holidays preparing the mower shed for renovations and completing some other much needed tidy up jobs around the school. Thank you to Shane and Connor Constable, Josh and Mark Whale and Jimbo Stokes for their early morning start with the furniture removal. The ranks were then filled with Darren, Jorji and Darcy Taaffe; Megan, Mackenzie and Jack Lean; Heidi, Sophie, Grace, Jack and Harry Inder; Lauren and Bronwyn Redgate and Sally Gilbey. I really enjoyed working with all these people to ensure our school grounds are in top shape for the children. The mower shed has now had its renovations and we have at last achieved a workable space to store all the sports equipment.

Last week we had our annual visit from the Waste Watchers. I had the pleasure of joining in with the Kinder/Year One Class and we learned more on Reducing , Recycling and Reusing. It was fabulous to see how much of this educative message has already been learned by the children and to listen to them share what they are doing at home as well as at school to reduce their ecological footprint in this way. We listened to stories of in-ground compost heaps, worm farms and innovative recycling projects happening at home. Well

Congratulations to the following award winners : The Spirit of St Joseph Award for Term 3 is sponsored by Merriwa Newsagency. James Hagley was the very worthy recipient of this award. MERRIWA PRE-SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

Our Pre-school Vegetable Plot The children really love our lovely new gardens located at the gate’s entrance. Have you seen them? Each day, the children help to water them and it creates a lot of interest with families. Some have brought in plants from home. In fact! We have no more room left in our plots!

Before the school holidays Clayton prepares some lettuce plants. We hope to be eating them with the ch i ld ren when summer arrives. A great way to encourage children e a t i n g n e w vegetables is to involve them in their growing.

Josie also helps at the planting stage. The children love to use the trowels. Just right for little hands! We look at the roots and talk about how they suck up the water.

Darcy and Grace help out in caring for our vegetables….watering cans at the ready. Child size tools are very appealing to children. They love to do what they see their significant adults do. What an array of

produce! Strawberries, lettuce, parsley, coriander, cucumber, baby spinach, carrots, and brussel sprouts are in at the moment. Many thanks to the parents and staff who have donated these seedlings. Thanks also to Kathy Ryan for coming in and applying some great mulch to help them along. There’s no worry about these vegetables needing water……the children take care of that! Jye gives us a guided tour of the different plants – he seems to know most of them, too!

Some more on our vegetables next week.

With the weather warming up we have been able enjoy more outdoor play. One day last week we had a great game of T-Ball at the school. All the children showed great skill and sportsmanship and we are all eager to get out and have another go.

Our obstacle course around the Preschool yard was also a great hit. The children had 3 goes each and were competing against their own time, which most children bettered. A little later in the term we would like to start taking the children to the pool as this is one of our most requested activities.

More About our Holiday Fun Our second trip away was to go ice skating. For some of the 19 children, it was a new experience but others were old hands at skating and showed us how it was done. We are astounded at how quickly some of the children took to the ice. As expected, there were quite a few falls with most bouncing back up to continue their fun. The children behaved beautifully and, as usual, did the centre proud.

For something a little a different during the holidays we went to the river to go fishing. The children each had a hand line to use, complete with sinker and hook. Most were happy to attempt to bait their own hooks with only a few who were a little too squeamish to try. After about 10 minutes of fishing, Izzy pulled in a smallish eel which we photographed and released. Unfortunately, no one else caught anything other than sticks and weeds, but we still had loads of fun.

MERRIWA ACTIVITY CENTRE After School and Vacation Care Catering for 5 – 12 year olds

On another afternoon, the children and staff strolled along the river path to do a spot of bird watching. The children took great delight in pointing out and trying to identify the birds we saw. Along the way we chatted about our pets, and other things the children wanted to share with the group. It really was a pleasant and peaceful way to spend the afternoon.

We really do try and offer a wide range of activities to suit different interests. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to tell us about them and if we can organise it we will. We would love some fresh ideas to add to our January vacation care programme.

Have you noticed our new blinds at the centre? Out with the old blue verticals (the ones with more gaps than actual blind) and in with the beautiful orange Holland blinds. Thank you to the committee for allowing us to replace them. They really do make the MAC room feel more homely.

Activity Centre CRN (Afterschool Care) is 55501702K and Vacation Care is 55501408J. There is also the potential for working mothers to receive up to 50% of the fees outlaid back in their tax returns.

Did you know your child can attend MAC for as little as $3 per session? Contact Centrelink to find out your child care benefit (CCB).

See you next week

SNOW, FLOODS & FROSTS The Merriwa District, along with the rest of Eastern Australia, endured some extraordinary weather last week due to a 3000km long, 1000km wide weather front, which swept the Eastern states. Floods and gale force winds on Friday, snow, sleet and hail on Saturday, and a heavy frost on Sunday caught many people by surprise, especially after such mild weather earlier in the month.

A flooded Talbragar River

Flooding of the Munmurra River caught a pair of unlucky travellers by surprise when they tried to cross the flooded river only to be swept down stream for several hundred metres, lucky to escape unharmed. The vehicle and many other possessions, however, were not so fortunate. Hopefully, this may act as a reminder to travellers not to underestimate the strength of swollen rivers.

CWA IS CALLING FOR NEW MEMBERS Following the success of the inaugural CWA Awareness Day held last month, the Country Women’s Association of New South Wales (CWA of NSW) wants to invite all ladies to be part of a team that participates in a variety of activities, such as fundraising, cultural activities, debating current social and environmental issues, and making a positive difference to your local community. Would you like to join us and help improve the conditions of women and their families, both in the country and in the city? If your answer is yes, then the CWA of NSW encourages you this October to become a member, or to renew your membership. The Merriwa Branch invites new members so it can continue to contribute to the state wide network of women that fundraise for medical research, lobby for better services for families, help out in times of emergency and provide an opportunity for friendship, socialising and personal development.

There has been some very significant changes have been made to government policies, roads, education, health and family living standards that can be attributed to the work of our CWA of NSW members.

The CWA Awareness Day was a great opportunity to reflect on some of our achievements and we are encouraging women

to join a CWA of NSW branch so that the great work can continue.

The CWA of NSW membership year begins on 1st October so now is the time to renew. There are currently over 400 branches throughout the state and Branches meet monthly to take on any number of initiatives.

Don’t miss your chance to become a member of the CWA and make a difference to the lives of women and their families in local communities. If you are interested in becoming a member please call Rose Witney 6548 8548 or just come along to one of our meetings which are held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 10am.

MERRIWA HARDWARE Back again for another go at not making too much sense. Well the spring catalogue sale is over (at last). It seemed to go on forever! Plenty of people grabbed some great bargains. Good luck to everyone who entered the "Thrifty Cash & Grab" competition. Two lucky people will each receive a voucher for $250.00 to spend at Merriwa Hardware just by filling out an entry form. All the entry forms have been bundled up and sent off to Sydney where they will be drawn on October 5. Winners will be notified by mail. Anyways, the sale itself may be over but there are still some specials available. We have a few clearance items near the front that you may be interested in, some marked down to half price. So come in have a look and have a wander, you never know just what you may find. We've had a last minute delivery of callistemon come in. You know, a "bottle brush". These are a special release called "Mary MacKillop", yes, named after the Saint Mary Of The Cross MacKillop. These callistemon are only $12.99 and will develop into a fantastic looking shrub. Guess what? Out of time again! Seems to be a familiar theme. Did you know? A polar bear's skin is black. Its fur is not white, but actually clear.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK BAKED CINNAMON DOUGHNUTS

Ingredients 1 cup reduced-fat milk 50g unsalted butter, melted 2 1/2 cups plain flour 1 1/2 teaspoons instant dried yeast 3/4 cup caster sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Method Place milk in a heatproof, microwave-safe

jug. Microwave on medium-high (75%) for 30 to 40 seconds or until heated through (do not allow to boil). Stir in 1 tablespoon butter.

Sift flour into a bowl. Stir in yeast, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Make a well in the centre. Add milk mixture. Mix to form a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

Using your fist, punch dough down. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth. Press dough out until 2.5cm thick. Using a 6.5cm cutter, cut 12 rounds from dough. Using a 2.5cm cutter, cut circles from the centre of each round. Place doughnuts, 5cm apart, on prepared tray. Cover with lightly greased plastic wrap. Set aside in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200°C/ 180°C fan-forced. Cook doughnuts for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Combine remaining sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Brush doughnuts with remaining butter. Dip in sugar mixture, shaking off excess. Best served warm.

SCONE CELEBRATES "THE RACE THAT STOPS THE NATION"

Australia’s Horse Capital – Scone – welcomed the visit of the 150th Anniversary Melbourne Cup on Friday, 15 October 2010. The famous trophy has recently completed a 220-day global tour of 10 international destinations and to celebrate the sporting, cultural and social significance of the race is now touring 32 cities and regional and rural destinations across Australia and New Zealand that are intrinsically linked to the Melbourne Cup’s rich 150-year history.

The 18-carat gold C u p w a s accompan ied to Scone by Victoria Racing Club Board Director Mrs Amanda Elliott and former VRC Chief Steward and VRC Ambassador Mr Des Gleeson.

Scone embraced the spirit of the special anniversary tour and played host to a wide range of related activities in the lead-up to the visit. These included a race fanfare musical playoff and national anthem singing competition by local schools, an open day at Invermein Stud, and an ABC interview with the local trainer responsible for breaking in and pre-educating Champion mare Makybe Diva -Greg Bennett.

Scone’s connection with the Melbourne Cup extends back to the start of the race with Dr Judy White of the famous Belltrees property reporting that her family (on her mother’s side) bred and raced Archer who, for over a century was one of

only two horses who won the Melbourne Cup twice - in 1861 and 1862. Scone’s link to the ‘Race That Stops A Nation’ came full circle last year when the Scone born Shocking secured victory; the gelding also starting as one of the favoured runners in 2010. Shocking was bred by local stud Ilala whose owners George and Felicity Fraser were on hand at the official Melbourne Cup Tour opening ceremony at the Upper Hunter Shire Council Administration Building to receive a special trophy from the VRC. During the course of the day Upper Hunter Shire locals were able to view the 2010 Melbourne Cup plus an extensive range of historical racing memorabilia, and courtesy of the generosity of a number of local families, 4 additional Melbourne Cups were also on display representing the winners Poitrel (1920), Rimfire (1948), Evening Peal (1956) and Kensei (1987). Whilst in Scone the Cup travelled to Scott Memorial Hospital and Strathearn Village Aged Care Facility, visited historic Belltrees Primary School and attended a ‘Melbourne Cup Trivia Night’ at the Linga Longa at Gundy. Gale force winds and inclement weather conditions failed to dampen the spirits of the large crowds that gathered at each Cup location; everyone eager to take the opportunity to be photographed holding the iconic trophy.

UPPER HUNTER WEEDS AUTHORITY St John’s Wort St John’s Wort is mainly a weed of pastures as it is readily controlled by cultivation. However it is a strong competitor for light, nutrients and moisture in pasture situations, a feature which is enhanced by the fact that livestock do not preferentially graze the plant, leaving it to out grow desirable species. Some areas of Victoria and Southern NSW have been abandoned as pastoral pursuits because of this weed. Livestock forced to eat large quantities of St John’s Wort at any stage of its growth mat develop a condition called photosensitisation, where light coloured skin reacts severely to sunlight. Severely effected animals cannot graze properly and may starve to death. The toxin causing this condition can also be passed on to lambs and calves via the mother’s milk. Controlling St John’s Wort is not easy in pastures as the prolific seed set of up to 33,000 seeds per square metre has an ability to germinate over a period of up to 10 years. Pasture improvement, grazing management and herbicides must all be used to gain some form of control, and ongoing management is essential. Biological control is showing promise in reducing severe infestations down to a manageable level, but as for Paterson’s Curse it is slow and may not be the best choice.

African Boxthorn African Boxthorn is probably as similar a threat to the warmer drier areas of the state as blackberry is to the cooler wetter ones. Once established. The plant provides harbour for rabbits and the spiny growth habit can prevent access by domestic livestock to water and pasture. The seed is spread mainly by birds and seedlings and juvenile plants can be found under trees, along fence lines and around watering points. The fruit of Boxthorn is a breeding place for fruit fly and the common house flu as well as other insect pests. Physical removal by dozing or pulling with a tractor and then burning is the best form of initial control. Large plants and clumps which are sprayed with a herbicide and left standing still pose the same access and feral animal harbour problems. The removal and burning allows easy access in the following seasons to spray suckers and seedlings. Plants under stress should never be sprayed. The easiest way to ascertain whether Boxthorn is ready to spray is to vigoursly shake a limb of the plant and if leaves fall readily, the plant should not be sprayed. Flicking leaves with your finger is another method.

THE MERRIWA MUSEUM Merriwa is a unique, vibrant little town; it has a lot going for it. The area was settled around 1830 and the township was proclaimed in 1840. The Blaxland cousins, John of Bow Creek who was the son of Greg Blaxland and John Marquette, Son of John Blaxland MLQ were asked by the community to seek permission from the NSW government to establish a town. The first blocks were thrown open to the public in 1840. We are very fortunate in having a museum in one of the oldest sand stone dwellings in the town. To understand the past one has only to visit this museum with its collection of photos and memorabilia. The Merriwa Historical Society met on Monday for their annual general meeting. The society has been doing well and thanks to our committee is in a sound financial situation. There has been a steady interest from tourists and locals in the wonderful display of Merriwa memorabilia that is contained in the museum. Volunteers have been invaluable, giving freely of their time to keep the museum open and taking people through with commentaries on the display. However to maintain and stimulate interest, we need new ideas especially new members, young and ld. So if you have an interest in the town and the district please get in touch with us on the telephone numbers below. The museum also has a number of books written about Merriwa’s past, which can be purchased. They include; Murder at Terragong - Elvin Andrews A Tale of a Silk Weaver and Carpenter

UPPER HUNTER LANDSCAPE GUARDIANS In response to recent articles in the Ringer, Anne Bishop writes: Facts: Wind farms are proving to be a disaster in the northern hemisphere and indeed, there are many ‘white elephants’ littering the landscape. While everyone applauds efforts to generate renewable energy, the more one reads about wind farms the more one comes to the conclusion that they are a worldwide political stunt. Certainly, while taxpayer funded subsidies last, big business is happy to go along with this. Yet, while wind farms are increasingly discredited around the world, our Government continues to promote them. Why? We have much more sunshine than they do in the northern hemisphere and we actually export uranium. Wave power is more reliable. There has to be a better way for us in Merriwa than these colossal, inefficient towers! Not In My Back Yard: To classify objections to the proposed Merriwa wind farm as a petty NIMBY dispute, is to trivialise very real concerns about its impacts on the whole local community (impacts that have all been documented in other places): The destruction, industrialisation and

transformation of Merriwa land and landscape

Risks from overhead power lines and transmission lines

Bushfire risks Loss of land value and the effect of this on

neighbours Deteriorating health and well being. Visual

distress. Aural distress.

Negative effects on domestic stock Destructive effects on wildlife. Loss of beauty and quality of life Division between neighbours Community Benefits? For each $4-6million tower erected in the Merriwa area, the wind farm developer targeting Merriwa proposes to give the community $1000 dollars a year. At a wind farm meeting, we heard the representative say that the initial gift to British communities is usually a fire truck! I think he might have been a bit sorry he said that! This is a pitiful exchange for the loss of so much, for the permanent environmental destruction and the terrible legacy these huge towers will be to future generations. Opposition to wind farms reflects a deep love and respect for the environment and an intention, as temporary custodians of the land in our care, to hand it on to the next generation as we received it. This is far more important than any token gesture from a wind farm developer. Rentals: No-one would criticise any farmer or grazier seeking to augment his or her income. We have had years of drought and only recently have seasons and commodity prices turned round, so one hopes for better times, at least in the immediate future. However, in view of the hopeless inefficiency of these towers and the effect that their introduction into the Merriwa ‘precinct’ will have on all of us and our quality of life, I suggest that anyone proposing to erect them on their property steers well clear of the high moral ground.’

MERRIWA PHARMACY Let’s Talk About Mental Health “The happiness gene may help you look on the bright side.” This was the heading of a story which appeared in New Scientist magazine early last year. But more recent research indicates that happiness could be more a matter of choice. A 25 year study of 60,000 Germans has shown that long-term happiness is determined by lifestyle decisions including choice of partner, employment and religion. The results of the study are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and although the research was conducted in Germany, study leader, Associate Professor Bruce Headey from the University of Melbourne, suggests the findings can also be applied in Australia. All this is good news, because it seems the things that make us happy are also likely to help prevent or manage mild to moderate anxiety and depression. This year Beyond Blue is encouraging more young people to discuss mental health with the aim to reduce stigma associated with anxiety and depression. “Talk About It” T-shirts will be available right through October at Cotton On shops around Australia. Some studies suggest that we inherit the tendency to feel more stress. Other studies describe stress (perhaps like happiness) as a response that is learned over a lifetime. In any event, people who experience high levels of stress, tend to hold beliefs which make them feel threatened, ultra vigilant and out of control. A c c o r d i n g t o B e y o n d B l u e (www.beyondblue.org.au) being stressed doesn’t automatically mean becoming depressed. However, acute and severe distress associated with tough times can certainly occur and be a risk factor for depression if it persists. So, there is no doubt too much stress can be a health hazard; and the first important step in stress management involves being aware of

when our stress levels become unhealthy. Once stress overload is recognised there is a range of stress management skills available to address the problem. If you feel tense or “stressed out” almost all the time, and anxiety or depression are affecting your everyday activities, then it’s time to have a chat with your GP. You might also benefit from the top 10 Stress Less Tips from your state Mental Health Association. For instance: go for a regular walk, or maybe a bike ride; delegate some of your work; schedule in some quiet time for yourself; relax with a good book or a movie; take regular tea breaks; catch up with friends or family; accept a compliment and give one back; cook yourself a healthy meal; book your next holiday; and don’t take life too seriously – “reduce tears, increase cheers”. Your pharmacist can help too. There’s a series of mental health information cards available from pharmacies as part of the Pharmaceutical Society’s Self Care Program. Developed with the assistance of the Department of Veterans Affairs, they cover a number of topics such as Anxiety, Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Throughout life there’ll be plenty of stressful situations for us to cope with. Just how we cope will determine how healthy we stay. For a little extra help on how to stress less, ask your Self Care Pharmacist for the fact card titled Anxiety. There are also useful cards on subjects such as Relaxation Techniques and Sleeping Problems available Free from Merriwa Pharmacy. And don’t forget to pick up a “Talk About It” T-shirt; $10 from every sale will go to help fund research into anxiety and depression in young people.

MERRIWA RAILWAY SOCIETY INC.

Keep reading for the good news. The lease between ARTC and UHSC was signed last week. UHSC have given us permission to proceed while the formal sub lease is signed with MRSI. Hooray!!!!.

It is 12 months since our first Public meeting and we have been working non stop to get to this point. A long time ago, but I remind you that Mr. Allan McRae lead the lobbying of Governments for the rail line to Merriwa. He started in 1887 with the first train on 29 October 1917----30 years later. We have done well.

There will be a Public meeting on Sunday 24 October at the RSL BBQ area starting at 1pm. Exactly 12 months from the first meeting. Please attend to get an update and set a working bee for the week end of 13-14 November. Both current members and all other interested people are asked to attend. Last year we had 42 attendees. Most signed up as members. We have 34 members. We are hoping to double this number in 2 weeks time.

This will be a work action meeting, not merely a talkfest.

There have been some changes to the Management Committee. The Past President and Vice President resigned last. Brian Leedham has assumed the President role as well as Secretary. Brian has done a great job in helping us get to this point.

UHSC staff continue to support us with maintenance to the station site grounds. We have some sponsorship assistance. Could do with more if you can help financially or in kind with materials or services.

Please come along to the meeting on 24 October, we need your support. Any questions you have please phone me 6548 5000 or email [email protected]

A HUGE THANK YOU

My Husband Lance and I would like to thank the people of Merriwa for all your help and congratulations for our wedding on 10-10-10.

Firstly I can not thank my daughter Brianna enough for putting up with my "Bridezilla" moments and Adrian for putting up with her, and all of his help with the BBQ and spit. And my son Stewart for his help, I was a bit worried when I saw him in a suit

The El Dorando Motel for providing such clean and beautiful rooms for all my wedding guests, who were all impressed with the accommodation. Merriwa Bakery for the beautifully decorated chocolate cake, it was to die for!! Max's Country Cuts for the fantastically tender rump for the BBQ lunch. Lenore Taylor for her beautiful desserts and help with my dress. And to all the staff of the coffee shops who provided my guests with coffee early on Sunday before the wedding

As most of our guests came from Sydney, the Central Coast and as far as Adelaide, they were all impressed with our little town and I am very proud to live in a great community such as this.

All my guests took home little sheep fridge magnets with Merriwa painted on them purchased from Kurrajong Tree, Thank you Doris they were a big hit with the city crowd! As with most large functions I have a lot of people to thank, If I have forgotten you here I haven't forgotten you contributions, especially all my work mates!! On a sadder note, Lance and I offer Katie Towell and family our sympathy at such a difficult time in there lives, you are in our thoughts. May your pain be eased by the loved ones around you With fond regards

MERRIWA DISTRICT EDUCATION FOUNDATION

About the Merriwa District Education Foundation Our Mission To foster the further education, career and personal development opportunities of rural youth , through communi ty based encouragement and financial assistance. Our History The country education foundation of Australia runs an Australian wide program that seeks to encourage rural communities to support the ongoing training and education of their youth. Through this it aims to support communities in creating an economic and socially sustainable community. In 2002 a small group of Merriwa residents meet with Katie Walker with the view of forming an association for the Merriwa community. A meeting was called and the Merriwa District Education Association was incorporated in November 2002. An initial grant of $5000.00 was received from Graincorp followed by the sale of some stock which was donated. Since 2002 the Merriwa District Education Foundation has advertised the availability of scholarships in the Ringer annually and has been involved in supporting 12 students with their tertiary education pursuits. These awards have ranged from $500 to $1000 depending on the assessment of individual needs. The awards have covered additional training and education costs such as textbooks and accommodation expenses. The additional training that successful Merriwa students have undertaken has ranged from

Rural Science, Business/Commerce, Primary Teaching, Horticulture, Sports Management, Medical Science, Asian Studies and Communication. The following graph highlights the location of post high school education.

The Merriwa District Education Foundation continues to seek ongoing sponsorship to support the local youth seeking additional education and training opportunities. Anyone who would like to contribute please contact one of the committee members for further information. The Foundation acknowledges the generous support already received from community members and organisations.

WOOLBROOK INDUSTRIES

These are some of the possible carbon free and partially carbon free energy options, leaving the Holy Grail of endless pollution free energy till next week.

Carbon Sequestration and Storage (CSS): This entails removal of CO2 at the power station, piping it to a suitable site, and storing it underground. It would obviously make coal more attractive, though only from the carbon free angle since the devastation of coal mining would still continue and no doubt increase. The Federal Government has contributed $100 million towards research on CSS, however my understanding is that the coal mining and power industries have contributed comparatively little which may tell us something about their belief in CSS viability. CSS would be expensive in operational and capital costs in both extraction and transport to suitable storage sites, and I find it difficult to believe we could guarantee the CO2 would remain forever underground. If we could not we might only be passing our present day problems on to future generations.

Wave/Tidal Generation: Many possible sites will be unsuitable for a variety of reasons including shipping movements, the existence of ports, and fishing. One proposed experimental site off the coast of Cornwall is being opposed because it would affect one of the few good surfing sites in England due to one of the immutable laws of physics, i.e. “Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but merely changed from one form into another”. Therefore if energy is extracted from a wave it will be smaller and less suitable for surfing, and if enough is extracted it will no longer be a wave at all. Solar Generation: The technology here is advancing rapidly, even to the extent that we

may soon be able to apply solar cells to roofs in the form of paint. Government subsidies allowed some consumers to put solar panels on their roof not only to generate their own power but also to sell any surplus back to the power companies at up to 60 cents per kW hour. So many jumped onto this idea, and so quickly, that the subsidy will be withdrawn much earlier than originally proposed, and consumers will be forced to pay for the subsidy blow out to the tune of many millions of dollars in increased electricity charges. Why is the Government surprised that this happened? It surely did not take a genius to calculate that if the power companies were forced to pay 60 cents to householders for something they were generating themselves for a small fraction of that amount they would have to increase their prices overall, therefore all those in the community who were struggling to pay their electricity bills would have to subsidise those who were sufficiently financial to pay the solar panel installation net cost difference after payment of the capital installation subsidy. Not good for any government trying to explain rising electricity costs to voters because, though both sides of the equation are voters, the strugglers no doubt far outnumber those who have installed sufficient panels to generate a surplus. If we do not wish to cover much of our best country with solar cells we will need to go to what is in any case the ideal place for sunshine, i.e. far inland Australia where land is cheap and the sun mostly shines. This will entail giant power lines to the coast, and not too many will relish the thought of these running across their properties; indeed we saw opposition to the local high voltage power line which was erected from the coast through to (as I recall) Rylstone about 15 or 20 years ago. Of course the sun does not shine at night (and the wind does not always blow!), however technology is evolving at least one counter to both, i.e. storage salts

HOUSEHOLD PRESSURE PUMPSHOUSEHOLD PRESSURE PUMPS

We stock 3 different sizes. They are all Grundfos, i.e. few would question their

quality. They are very much at the right price, particularly

considering their brand and quality. One type we now carry has a pressure tank and is

particularly well priced. The others are pressure control without a pressure tank so the water is delivered on demand and at a constant pressure. No more varying pressure in the shower!

Those who have bought them love them. We are using one here now, and we love it too.

The pump alone is available as a simple transfer pump

which are melted during such times, this stored heat being used to turn turbines.

Various Forms of Gas: Generating power, and other uses of gas, does give off environmentally unfriendly gases including CO2, however less so than coal. It also offers at least two further advantages, i.e. it can be piped unobtrusively underground to power stations where the power is needed thus eliminating long distance overhead power lines, and it can fire up a power station quickly compared to coal. However, its use does worry me for at least two reasons, the first of course being that at best it is only less environmentally damaging than coal. The other is that production of these gases often requires different forms of underground activity such as so-called “fracking” (rupturing and fracturing underground rock formations using hydraulic pressure or explosives) which, in spite of what the energy companies claim, could have unforseen, and serious, detrimental effects. These include possible damage to both underground water tables (e.g. the Liverpool Plains) and above ground rivers and creeks (e.g. some areas around Sydney including the Warragamba catchment). NIMBYs are already objecting to the possible extraction of underground methane gas from the coalfields near Sydney. Another method which seems doubtful to me is the underground burning of coal and harvesting of the gases produced. One such trial site in Queensland appears to have already contaminated nearby underground water to the extent that sale of cattle from nearby properties has been banned. Offshore drilling sites for both oil and gas are also fraught with danger as has been recently and amply demonstrated off the north west coast of Australia and in the Gulf of Mexico.

MERRIWA DISTRICT PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

The MPDA held its AGM 22 Septembers when the election was held for office bearers, and no major changes were made to the committee. The following were elected: Kim Fenley – President Kerry Hapgood - Position of Minutes Secretary Beron Arden-Wood - Pos i t ion of Correspondence Secretary Mel Gillott - Public Officer Jan Cronin – treasure Brian Baker - Auditor Kim Fenley noted that the MDPA had assisted the community in various ways through a number of very well attended public meetings on Wind Power, Ambulance issues and discussions with Council with all Councillors’ in attendance at that meeting. Further successes were the upgrade of the Arts building through a grant which was obtained via Council; the new toilets next to the RTC; repair of the road outside the Post Office and main street; the Doctors surgery fixed for accreditation are some of the major items driven by the MDPA. There were also many individual submissions to the MDPA relating to issues within the community requiring the MDPA to liaise with the Council for resolution.

The forthcoming year the MDPA sees the issues of gravel roads, town street numbering and library services as areas which will require attention within the community. Mr Fenley would like to take this opportunity to thank those of you in the community who have participates and helped the MDPA during the year and look forward to your continuing support. Mr Fenley also asked community members to join and come along and assist in our local community meetings, because without active members this community would be taken for granted by Council, Government and commercial organisations. Finally, the annual subscriptions are due now, and remember, we need you if Merriwa is to prosper and go forward. MDPA represents you, and you are the town, so be in it and join the MDPA now and come to meetings held very 4th Wednesday at 6pm in the RSL.

DR BRONWYN STOKES

I will be away for a large part of the next month. From 20 October until the 24 October I will be at a Rural Doctor’s conference in Hobart, updating my obstetrics skills, From 1 November until 18 November I will be away again, visiting my daughter in Tanzania. She has been doing volunteer work there and we are very keen to see her again. This means that those of you who will be needing prescriptions while I am away, will need to organise these next week. Carol will be at the surgery for several days during my time away and immediately before I return. If you are unwell during my time off, you will need to contact the hospital.

The weight loss people have made a great start. So far, over 21kg loss between you all. We have a half a dozen unofficial starters who are also going very well. Remember, consistency is very important, Treats tend to undermine your resolve as well as your weight loss.

We have now a wonderful library of recipes which you can view or photocopy if you want. These can liven up your diet. We don’t want you to get bored. Take care, everyone. Keep healthy.

The ever popular Lang Catalogues have arrived and will not last long so you will need to get in quick to make sure that you don't miss out. Also back by popular demand are the scrolled calendar frames that hold the calendars.

Christmas Stock is coming in left, right and centre at the moment, so now is a good time to start dropping in to have a look at what we have in store and start thinking about Christmas. I have recently found a new supplier who has a licensed Peter Brock range - this range includes T-Shirts, caps, bar mats, jigsaws, folding chairs, framed racing suits and lots more - so if you have a Peter Brock fan that you find hard to buy gifts for maybe we can solve that problem for you.

I will try to keep you up to date on what stock has arrived over the next few weeks, but the best way is to just drop in and have a look from time to time.

MERRIWA POST OFFICE

More than just a Post Office!

Closed Saturday Please note that Merriwa Post office will be closed this Saturday, 23 Oct 2010, for personal reasons. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Mobile Phone News There is a plethora of new PrePaid mobiles introduced for Christmas and because of this some of the existing mobiles have been reduced. For example the very popular Telstra Samsung C5220 is now only $79. We also have mobiles from as low as a bargain $29 or $59 with camera. Be quick with these run-out specials as they won’t last long. At the other end of the scale check out the Optus/Boost Nokia E63 corporate premium phone for as little as $129 or the Telstra Nokia 6700 slider for $195. Many more new mobiles, touch types and qwerty types in stock – check us out.

Closed for Melbourne Cup! Speaking of closing, Kerry and I have decided to treat ourselves to the Melbourne Cup lunch and shindig at the top pub on the afternoon of the cup. That’s Tuesday November 2 in about a week and a half’s time. We anticipate closing the PO from about 12.30 to 3.30 pm. Of course we will be open as usual before and after these times and hope everyone enjoys the nations biggest race as we hope to.

Mary MacKillopp FDC We have a small stock of Mary MacKillopp First Day Cover envelopes. There are two types for only 70 cents or 90 cents. The 90 cent envelope has an actual stamp but they are both lovely keepsake’s for this special occasion. These are limited run items and there is no more stock once sold so please don’t delay if you are interested (the Mary MacKillopp gold and silver coins are already sold out).

20% Note Rule This is important – especially if you run a business and handle cash. Take Note! If more than 20% of any bank note is missing then the note is not legal tender and will not be accepted at any bank – and Merriwa Post Office is also a bank. It doesn’t matter what 20% is missing or whether the bank note numbers are still intact or not. If any 20% is missing then the note is no good. This rule has been inn force for a few years but is not widely known (the old rule about being able to see the bank note number no longer applies). Please do not try to cash or present such a note at the PO as we cannot accept it.

Passport Photographs Passport photo’s and photo’s for Workcover applications etc (or any other reason) are now available at Merriwa post office. A set of 4 passport quality photographs cost $13.95. Merriwa PO is now your one-stop-shop for Australian Passport interview/applications and Workcover applications and renewals. Travel money too. If possible please call 6548 2042 to arrange a convenient time for your interview and photograph. This will help save time by avoiding busy periods.

Please Bring Parcel Cards In! If you get a little red and white card in the mail saying that you have a parcel to pick up then it’s important that you bring the card into the Post Office. We store many, many parcels and packages at the PO and the card tells us where to look. This saves time and frustration especially when there are queues and we are busy. It also stops us missing a parcel and the customer from making a second trip if there is more than one item to pick up. Even if you don’t have the red/white card try to remember what we have written on it. For example: Registered, Elads, Receipted Delivery, Express, all of which will tell us where to start looking. Please help us to help you. Postmasters thought for the week: Don’t attribute to malevolence what is merely due to incompetence Melism

PONY CLUB NEWS The Christmas party date is set for Sunday 12 December. Please book this date into your diary. If anyone has any ideas for the party please contact Clare Martin. We were shocked to hear about the recent death of Sam Towell. To Katie and family, Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer.

When you miss him, we’re with you in spirit, wondering how you feel,

hoping you’re coping, and getting a little better each day.

We understand. We care. When you’re grieving,

we’re beside you, we are thinking of you frequently

And praying for you, too. If there’s something we can do,

Anything at all, Think of us thinking of you, And don’t hesitate to call.

God Bless all of us at this difficult time.
