He did ask if we had any information on any of the families listed below. We could not help on any but the first, and we referred him to Mr. Marion C. Hayes on it. If our connection was correct then he will fit into the family of William 1633. See CONNECTING COUSINS elswhere in this issue for more on this family. Those he questioned were:

    record is correct, but have 5ent copies of the two family group records to both contacts. We have had no response from either. We may have a follow-up inquiry after we hear from Joe.

    4-106. Lewi!! L. Ho....... 504 White Hall Circle, Hampton, VA 23669 sends the following:

    For many years 1 have sought the ancestry of one Francis HOWES, born 1804 in New Hampshire - died 1872 in Granby, Oswego County, New York. Francis moved to central New York about 1825 and remained there until his death. Francis' first marriage was to Betsey BOGANDUS who died at age 33 in 1841 leaving him with four children less than 10 years of age.

    In 1842 Francis married DIANTHE CHAPMAN, daughter of THOMAS CHAPMAN, JR and Marian (CARPENTER> Chapman, married April 11 1813 in Ashford, Tolland County, CT. Dianthe was admitted to the Westford Congretational Church, Ashford in 1830. She travelled to Granby in 1842. It would appear that the marriage was "arranged" by relatives of either Francis or Dianthe.

    An old map of Granby, Oswego County, New York shows that a neighbor of Francis was one "C. Chapman." Whether he was a relative of Dianthe, I am unable to ascertain. I have been unable to find any relatives of Francis' in Connecticut. My efforts to find a reference to Thomas Chapman, Jr. in Connecticut libraries or Chapman family genealogies have not met with success either. I would welcome any relevant information you or your readers might be able to prOVide.

    4-107. c.cy Ric., 507 W. Logan, Moberly, MO 65270 needs information on her second gr~at grandmother, ELIZABETH ANN CHAPMAN, born August 31 1840 in Glenn Falls, NY and married Daniel MORGAN 1857 in March Chuck, PA. She was the daughter of a Chapman who was born in England, lived to age 92 and is buried in Omaha, NE.

    4-108. Caroline L.h~.n, Rt ••1, Box 24, New London, IA 52645 is looking for information on her third great grandparents. HAHLON KIRKBRIGHT CHAPMAN born November 22 1800 in New Jersey, married Eliza Duer MCNEAL December 2 1824 in Pennsylvania.

    4-109. Ia.ac B. Ross, 14116 Con!!titution Street, Edmond, OK 73034 is seekin~ information on the grandmother of his deceased wife. ELIZA JANE CHAPMAN married John MONSEY probably before 1867 and maybe in Kansa~.

    4-110. Roseanna Ratliff, 515 East Grand Avenue, Ponca City, OK 74601 is the great granddaughter of NAOMI CHAPMAN born September 18 1824 in Cleveland County, NC. She was the daughter of ROBERT CHAPMAN who married Margaret TALLENT. Robert may have been the son of Nicholas and Sarah Chapman. Roseanna sent us a lengthy account on many Chapmans who married into the Swofford line, but we have not had time to load the data into the computer.

    4-111. JRannR My.ra, 182 Eastland Drive, Ottawa, OH 45875 responded to our inquiry: Sorry to say I have only one Chapman family. Wilamia (Wilhemina) wrote a letter in 1891 saying her father died. A note on the outside of the envelope leads me to believe she was a sister to Thomas J. VIETCH. The 1900 King Co. NY census lists a WILLIAM D. CHAPMAN, wife Wilhemina, 2 sons and a Phoebe VEITCH as M-I-L

    (Hother-in-Law). We know Wilhemina's father had' been married twice. His flrst wife produced two sons and his second wife three daughters. The census said Phoebe had three children. Everything ties in for me with the Veitch family.

    4-112. Mrs. Harry N. Deyo, 808 Church Street, Plymouth, MI 48170 sent the followlng just a few days after we wrapped up the last issue: Need data on JOHN CHAPMAN and wife Margaret T. Are they the parents of RANDALL CHAPMAN who married Oril RICE daughter of Aaron RICE and Anna __ . Who are parent~ of John and Margaret? Did they all come to South Briston, Ontairo Co. NY with the WILDER PARTY in 1805? Where from? Randall bought land there in 1818, deed witnessed by JOHN WILLIAM CHAPMAN. Randall and Oril came to Oakland COLmty, MI 1827. Margaret T. came between 1830 and 1840. There may be a clue for Mrs. Deyo in our CONNECTING COUSINS feature on another page. See the comments on the famlly of Reuben 1733 Ct.

    4-113. Mary E. Leppla, 220 Reed Road, Wooster, OH 44691 is the granddaughter of ELIZABETH ANN CHAPMAN born Novembeer 4 1856 1n Wayne County, QH and married William Anson WHEATON in 1883. Elizabeth Ann was the daughter of THOMAS CHAPMAN born 1819 and married Ellen DWEIR born 1820 in Ireland. She needs information on Thoma~.

    4-114. John R. Griffin, 2008 Stringer Gap Road, Grants Pass, OR 97527 sent three pages of information on Chapmans of England which we have not yet loaded into the computer. He also sent the followingz The Chapman connection I am interested in are the ancestors of MARY CHAPMAN (1801-1851) of Lincoln~hire, England.

    Mary Chapman married John GRIFFIN in Quadring, Lincolnshire, England May 29 1828 and had Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Rachel and Harriet. They emigrated to Lake County, IL in 1846 and bought a farm. (You ~iIl see .ore fro. John Griffin, if not in this issue, then .. I ate,.. one.) 4-11~. Richard B. Gr..n, 832 Central Park, Paradise, CA 95969 ~eem~ to be well up on his wife's Chapman line. The anceetor for which he needs information i~ JOHN CHAPMAN born 1750 Loudon County, VA, married Leanna BROWN January 18 1779 and died in Iredell County, NC in May 1837 or before. We may have a little information for Richard in CONNECTING COUSINS elsewhere in this i!55ue. See John 1730 family.

    4-1,16. Mr.. MAry Watson, P. O. Box 22, Westphalia, IN 47~96 sends the followinQI Can anyone help me with information about the followingl will be glad to reimburae any expen5e.

    ROBERT CHAPMAN, born 1782 in North Carolina, married (1) Anna MARTIN and (2) Margaret CUMMINS. NICHOLAS CHAPMAN, born 1758 in Baltimore County, Maryland died July 25 1851 in Burke County, North Carolina. Robert Chapman married Elizabeth TAYLOR, living in Baltimore County, Maryland in 1758, believed to be the parents of Nicholas.

    4-117. Donald J. Moody, 418 East Weber Road, ColumbUS, OH 43202 needs information on hi3 great great grandfather Rev. JOHN C. CHAPMAN, born March 20 1818 in Dauphine County, PA, married Elizabeth PARMORE, October 23 1838.

    They died in Stark County, Ohio and are buried ln Ashland County, Ohio. Don's primariy concern 1S to learn something about the parents of John C. Chapman.

    4-118. Pat Teff, Bo}: 165, Lansing, IA 52151 says; I have been trying to make contact with any descendants of the W. CHAPMAN family found in the 1880 census of Nelson, Nuckolls County, Kansas. His wife Fannie was a HARTMAN and a relative of my great grandfather, Zebulon HARTMAN, SR., possibly even his sister. Children in this family were Eliza, Aurelius, George, Clarence and Laura who was married to Thomas SWARTZ. Their family was also listed in this census and their children were Charles, Olive, ~< Milborn. If you could help me any on this family I would greatly appreciate it.

    4-119. Mrs. A.L. (Ruby) Harris, 917 Bowie Court, Temple TX 76501 is seeking information on ANNA ELIZABETH CHAPMAN born May 2 1858 and married James Monroe COOPER. Anna was the daughter of GEORGE CHAPMAN born 1812 in Portland, Maine, married Lethie Little. Speaking of George, Ruby says: "We hit the well known blank wall in Portland Maine because there were 3 George Chapmans listed there and we didn't know which one was ours.

    4-120. Mrs. Paul (Carol) Fowler, 23054 Gilletts Lake Road, Jackson, MI 49201 needs information on her husbands great great grandfather JOSEPH CHAPMAN and his wife Hannah OILER, both born in England. Their daughter, HANNAH CHAPMAN born March 23 1822 in England, married David D. FOWLER October 3 1843 in England.

    4-121. Mrs. Glen (Pat) Vancil, Route 2, Box 356, Paducah, KY sends this inquiryl Need information on parents of JOHN CHAPHAN ~ BEN CHAPMAN. John was born 1806 in Tennessee and he died in 1874 in Graves County, Kentucky. He married Annie TRAUGHBER about 1824, and they lived in Robertson County, Tennessee in 1850. John and Annie had a daughter ANGELINE CHAPMAN who ma~~ied a Josiah CROWLEY. Ben Chapman, John's father, married a Nancy .

    4-122. Mrs. Ron (C.rol) Snider, Route 1, Queen City, MO 63561 writes: We are not sure that CHAPMAN is one of Ron's ancestral lines. At this point we are trying to establish the truth or untruth of some circumstantial evidence.

    His known ancestor is Eleanor PLUMMER born 1804 in Kentucky married 1831 in Clermont County, Ohio, Peter SHINKLE. We think her father was Thomas kirk PLUMMER who married MARY CHAPMAN 1797 in Mason County, Kentucky. Mary (Polly] was the daughter of WILLIAM CHAPMAN. His will is recorded in Fleming County, Kentucky:

    Book A Page 127 William Chapman Will written 15 July 1807 divided among my Sons and Daughters: COLLIMORE CHAPMAN, Tabitha PLUMMER, Mary PLUMMER, WILLIAM CHAPMAN, Monica PLUMMER, NAAMAN CHAPHAN, SARAH CHAPMAN, and NANCY CHAPMAN. Appoint my son WILLIAM CHAPMAN and my son-in-law Thomas Kirk PLUMMER executors. Proved in Court August 1807

    There is a small cemetery located in Fleming County, Kentucky where William and Eleanor are bL,ried:

    Eleanor wife of Wm. Chapman born Feb. 5, 1748 di ed June 15, 1802 101m. Chapman di ed Jul y 15, 1806 aged 66 years (year must be wrong as will was written in 1807)

    4-123. Miss J~.n E. Brower, 927 Prospect Street, Apt 801, Honolulu, HI 96822 is the great granddaughter of MARGARET BARTLEY ANNADYCE CHAPMAN born September 1 1824 in Scotland. She married William D. CRAWFORD June 24 1821 in Howard County, Missouri. Margaret was the daughter of SAMUEL CHAPMAN born December 15 1797 in Kent England and he married a Sarah SMEAD [SMEED] 1821 in Kent England. Samuel was the only child of DANIEL CHAPMAN who was born in Kent England, married a Sarah __ and lived to be 101 years old. It is on Daniel that more information is needed.

    4-124. Joyce Trier, 1 Camelot Drive, Oak Brook, IL 60521 sent the following some time ago: Need help on NOAH CHAPMAN, who was born in Connecticut, moved to Je+ferson, Schoharie County, New York and then to Scipio, Cayuga County, New York. Daniel was born in Jefferson in 1806, and Elias in 1813 in Scipo or Ledyard, Cayuga County. Abraham was probably also born in Jefferson. Noah was married to Anna or Annie TABER, also born in Connecticut. I know nothing of their ancestry except family history says Noah was a son of Noah. Joyce connects to the following. See CONNECTING COUSINS on another page for more information.

    4-125. Wm. Kincaid Newman, 279 Park Street, Upper Montclair, NJ 07043 sh~res the above mentioned (4-124) ancestor NOAH CHAPMAN with Joyce. He explains that ABRAHAM CHAPMAN, DANIEL CHAPMAN, ELIAS CHAPMAN and SU6ANAH CHAPMAN were children of NOAH CHAPMAN and Annie TABER [TABORJ. He is the great grandson of Daniel while Joyce is the great great granddaughter of Elias. See CONNECTIHG COUSINS elsewhere in this issue for our suggested possible connection.

    4-126. Mrs. J.R. (Marjorie) Skillen, Jr., 400 Carlisle Boulevard N E, Albuquerque, NM 87106 has some real problem~ with her Chapman line. Her mother was JOSEPHINE CHAPMAN born in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the daughter of ARTHUR CHAPMAN who was from Kansas City, and who was probably born during the late 1850's. Arthur was the son of ANDREW LATHAM CHAPMAN probably born about 1830. Andrew was a medical doctor. Marjorie says that her mother informed her that her Chapmans were direct discendants of Alex. Campbell who founded the Christian Church.

    4-127. Mr •• Lewi. E. (Mari.) WilliAms, Jr., Route 1, Box 268, Ringold, LA 71066 sends the following about her husbands line. He descends from LUCINDA CHAPMAN (1827-1910) was born Gallio County, Ohio and died Cabell County, WV., married John Sartin WILLIAMS. ARCHIBALD CHAPMAN (1786-1870) born Montgomery County, VA died Gallio County, OH married Elizabeth MILLS. GEORGE CHAPMAN (1770-1816) born Montgomery County, VA died Giles County, VA married Patience CLAY. Lt. JOHN CHAPMAN (1740-1815) born Culpeper County, VA died Giles County, VA married Sarah ABBOTT. What can you add to this line?

    CONNECTING COUSINS

    In the first and third issues of the newsletter we included information on this subject. With our new and improved computer systems we have settled on a format and a method of operation.

    When we see two or more Chappies who ~~~m to have a common ancestor, those Chappie files are coded with the ancestors name, year of birth and state of birth if known. We recoginze a total of 54 Chappies who share one of 19 different ancestors with one or more other Chappies. Our computer program lines these up and prints them out for us, by ancestor. In future quarters, it wi 11 identify those who have been added during the quarter.

    Those below are from the current file, and we will supplement this each quarter. Beginning with the 1985 Chapman directory we will include a complete review of our Connected Cousins.

    We are not suggesting that we or the newsletter was responsible for all of the connections mentioned below. Some of these connections have been known for years, and some were reported to us by some of the Chappies listed. By the same token, there are some Chappies who do not know of the connection, and if they are not subscribers, we will be sending them a copy of the appropriate page from this issue. To advise them of their connection.

    It will help us, in our efforts to be of service to you, if you will inform us of any omissions or errors in the information below. In some cases a situation may be a matter of judgement, in which case we solicit your opinion. If we direct a question to you in particular, it is most important that we hear from you.

    We are including our computer code and the name of the Chappie. Addresses for most of them can be found in the £XCH~H6£ in this issue or one of the previous issues. If not, and you need the address, give us a call or send us a note. The address of all Chappies will be in the 1984 directory.

    DANIEL 1760 NC

    JR Janis Richardson KJP Kathleen J. Phillips HLD Helen L. Douglas

    Janis was the first Chappie to ~port on this line which apparently extends onl~ three generations at this time. She showed her deceased husband's line to begin with .n1s 4th great grandfather DANIEL CHAPMAN ~ca1765ca1835). He was on the Orange Courlty, NC census in 1790 and the Robertson Cou~y, TN census in 1820. Kathleen said he was bRlieved to have been born in Maryland and was pn the 1782 Tax List in Lincoln County, WV

    stopping off place on the way. If that connection could be confirmed, then the book takes the line on back to Edward. He made absolutely no contribution to any of the cousins connected in this family. It IS provided far the benefit of readers today and in thE future.

    GILES CHAPMAN 1702

    ,JPC D~. Jesse P. Chapman, J~. 8B,1 Genevieve Jones GTW Beve~ley J. White

    Dr. Chapman has documented parts ot this family f~om the early 18th century down to the present generation. He has provided us with a list of about 400 cousins that belong to this family. We have not attempted to contact them assuming they have contributed all they know to him, and it is included in the book. We have made no effort to encourage them to subscribe to the newsletter because we fiqu~e Dr. Chapman al~eady provided them with thei~ family info~mation needs in hiS book. These three have a common lineaqe through only the first two gene~ations. We will not elaborate to any extent on them at this time, but will report as needed if and when we are put in touch with additional descendants of this line. GILES CHAPMAN born January 4 1702 is the beginning of this line. The other common ancestor was GILES CHAPMAN born June 21 1748 in Vi~ginia. The fo~mer married Sarah JACKSON, and the latter married Mary SUMMERS.

    HENRY CHAPMAN 1756 VA

    RPW Paul Woodall WWW Rev. Wallace W. Willis KPC Kendall P. Chapman

    Paul told us about Rev. Willis, and Ken contacted US on his own. We referred him to Paul and Wallace. These three share HENRY CHAPMAN as their ancestor. The year of his birth is approximate. and it is uncertain if he was born in Virginia, North Carolina, or maybe even somewhere else. His will indicates he died about 1822 in the Darlington Dist~ict of South Carolina. He was married first to Elizabeth ALLEN and second to Sarah GEE. The three sons of Henry who seem to be the main progenitors of this line probably moved to Georgia around 1830. Paul and Ken are descendants of ABNER CHAPMAN, born about 1801 in South Carolina. He died in Ma~ion County, Georgia and is buried there in Phillipi Chu~ch Cemete~y. Abne~ was married first to Ellen

    and second to Lucinda SMITH. Rev. Willis IS a descendant of AMBROSE CHAPMAN born 1805 in South Carolina. He died April 1870 in Marion County, Georgia. About 1828 he married Elizabeth GRIGGS. (there is some question about the Griggs name). Ambrose and Elizabeth had a son WILLIAM W. CHAPMAN born June 1830 in Meriwethe~ County, Georgia. He married first Sarah WOODALL and second Lillie Jordan GREEN. The descendants of this William W. Chapman have a reunion in Georgia each yea~. Rev. Willis is the historian for the group. Some members of the group know about our prog~am. but we have not heard from any but Wallace.

    JOHN 1625 ENGLAND

    WEB William E. B~itnel1 VKR Viola K. Reynolds

    These folks have a common lineage through about five generations beginning with a JOHN CHAPMAN born around 1600 in England. We know

    nothing more about this John, but his son JOHN CHAPMAN was baptized Auqust 28 1625 in Skelton, Yorkshire, England. He died about July 1694 in W~iqhtstown, Bucks County, PA. He married Jane SADLER about June 1667. Their son ABRAHAM CHAPMAN was born about March 1685 in W~lghtstown, Bucks County, PA. He died there February 23 1755. He married Susannah OLDEN about October 1715. Their son JOHN CHAPMAN was born about August 1716 in Wrightstown, Bucks County, PA and he died there in 1766. He married Mary TWINING September 8 1739. Although Viola had the names of all these ancestors, the pedigree sheets she sent us were missing most of the biographical data. Her record was complete on the next son, CHARLES CHAPMAN, SR. who was born January 1 1754 in Wrightstown, Bucks County, PA. He died April 15 1818 in U>:bridge, Ontario, Canada. He married Elizabeth LINTON November 15 1775. William is a descendant of their son CHARLES CHAPMAN, JR. and Viola is a descendant of their daughter ELIZABETH CHAPMAN. He see nothing in the file suggesting that these Chappies have been in touch with one another.

    JOHN 1730E

    SEW Sylvia Linde RBG Richa~d 8. Green

    Sylvia sent us a pedigree that goes through her fifth great q~andfather JOHN CHAPMAN. She has no information on him other than a name EURITH for his wife, and that he had a son named JOHN CHAPMAN born 1750-1760. A notation says he was John Sr. of Burke County. (Junior and Senior did not necessarily mean the same in those days as it does today.) Richard sent a partial pedigree on his wife's line. The last Chapman is JOHN CHAPMAN born 1750 in Loudon County, Virginia, died about May 1837 (date of will) in Iredell County, NC. He married Leanna BROWN January 18 1779. She was born in Rowan County, NC and died in Wilkes County. NC. Both show a son WILLIAM WASHINGTON CHAPMAN He was born 1785-86 in North Ca~olina and apparently died in Alexander County, North Carolina. He married Ruth BARNES March 9 1807. She was born December 18 1785 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and died April 25 in Union County, Georgia. Their son SOLOMON CHAPMAN born May 19 1814 in Wilkes County, NC died December 21 in Union County, GA. He married Adaline odom September 20 1836. She was born October 21 1821 in Wilkes County, and she died November 16 1897 in Union County, Geo~gia. Thei~ lines split with the children of Solomon. We have nothing to indicate that these two Chappies have been in touch with one anothe~.

    Mildred was our first contact and she sent her lineage beginning with her fou~th g~eat grandfather as follows: JOHN CHAPMAN born about 1750 in Culpeper County, VA married Jane DONOHO. Her Chapman line stopped with MARY CHAPMAN born December 22 1784 in Culpeper County, VA, died November 5 1869 in Mason County, WV. She married Andrew JORDAN Janua~y 4· 1827. Barbara sent her pedig~ee which included the above plus information that John was dead by 1790. Her Chapman line continued through foul' more generations: HENRY CHAPMAN

    married Elizabeth MORRIS, EDMUND CHAPMAN married Nancy DANIEL, WESLEY CHAPMAN married Frances FOSTER. and MARY ELIZABETH CHAPMAN who married James BOYD [BOYLE). 80th Margaret and Barbara referred us to Mildred Gibbs who has written a book an her Chapman and related lines. It is titled FROM CULPEPER COUNTY TO THE TEAYS VALLEY. We have copies of some of the pages from an old version. She has recently revised it, and has copies for sale. If she makes a copy available to us, we will be doing a book review in a futL\re issLle. We are not responsible for connecting these cousins. We mention the line here for there must be many descendants of this line looking for a connection.

    LUMAN/LYMAN 1803

    FJG Fred J. Henderson LAG Dolores S. Bano CAR Cleo A. Revier

    Fred was the first to give us information on this line as follows: his grandmother MATILDA CHAPMAN born 1862 in Clayton, Iowa married Robert PELLYMOUNTER December 12 1880 in Fayette County, Iowa. Matilda was the daughter of OTIS A. CHAPMAN born April 12 1839 in Medina County, Ohio. He died March 2 1904 in Winnebago County, Iowa. He married Jerusha R. HARVEY October 6 1861 in Clayton County, Iowa. Fred knows that the father of Otis was a LUMAN / LYMAN CHAPMAN and that at one time he was probably married to a Lois HOTELING or her sister. He shows childern of Luman, in addition to Otis, as IRA CHAPMAN LINDA CHAPMAN SILAS PHILO CHAPMAN who married Marie A. SHOEMAKER, and EZRA CHAPMAN. He also reported that Luman Chapman had siblings as follows: LOUIS CHAPMAN JERRY CHAPMAN SILAS CHAPMAN SARAH CHAPMAN and ADELINE CHAPMAN. Fred referred us to Cleo who shows Luman/Lyman as being married first around 1825, wife unknown and second to Lois Hoteling? about 1835-6. Cleo is a descendant o~ Luman's son SILAS PHILO CHAPMAN born 1828, died 1860, married as his second wife Marie Antoinette SHOEMAKER. She was born about 1830-40. Fred referred us to Delores Gano too, and she is also a descendant of Silas Chapman. We have tried to help with connections to Luman Chapmans listed in the 1854 Robert Chapman family etc of Massachusetts, but have not been successful.

    NOAH 1786 CT

    JT Joyce Trier WKN William K. Newman

    We covered the known lineage of these two in CHRP~AH EXCH~NGE on page 4. If you haven't read it lately, you might want to review exchange numbers 4-124 ~ 4-125 before going on. Remember we are looking for the ancestor of a NOAH CHAPMAN, born in Connecticut; who, family tradition said was a son of Noah. Noah's children were born 1806 and 1813 which would make his probable date of birth between 1760 and 1780. In the 1854 book on the Robert Chapman family, in a section devoted to another family, William Chapman born about 1633 we find a Noah Chapman born September 21 1770, son of Noah Chapman and Esther PLACE. This Noah was born June 29 1740 the son of THOMAS CHAPMAN and Miss STEADMAN. Thomas born June 1 1702 was the son of SAMUEL CHAPMAN and Bethia Samuel was born in 1665, son of WILLIAM CHAPMAN of New London, Connecticut, born about 1633. We have listed all this in hopes that you can help connect these two

    cousins to this established line. If such a connection is possible then Joyce and Mr. Newman belong in the family of this William 1 i sted 1ater.

    HND Gladys Alta Deyo HCF Helen Fox

    Gladys is Mrs. Harry N. Deyo. see #4-112 in the CH~PH~N EXCH~N&E. She ends her Chapman line with JOHN CHAPMAN born 1750 and married Margaret T. who was born 1753. John had a son RANDALL CHAPMAN born 1788 in Bristol, Ontario County, NY. He died June 3 1853 in Oakland County, MI. He married Oril RICE. her line continues on down through AARON R. CHAPMAN who married Jane G. SMITH, and then FLOYD (JUDDJ CHAPMAN who married Clara Isabell HAZEN and then Gladys. Helen Fox sent a pedigree which shows her husband's third great grandfather to be JOHN CHAPMAN born in Connecticut and buried in Briston NY or Ohio. He married Margaret T. who was born 1753, possibly in Connecticut, and died February 10 1847 in Oakland County, MI. John and Margaret had a son JOHN CHAPMAN born 1804 in Briston, NY, died 1860 "in Bristol and married Lydia CROSBY. Helen shows the father of John Chapman who married Margaret T. to be Reuben Chapman born 1733 in Saybrooke, CT, died 1799 in Salisbury Connecticut. Helen also shows Randall to be one of the sons of John and Margaret T. On page 79 of the 1854 book on the Robe~t Chapman family there is the follwing account:

    Reuben Chapman, son of Major Jedediah Chapman, born at West-Brook, Octobe~ 29, 1733, married Sarah Lay, June 28, 1759, by whom he had nine children. Four of said children were born in West-Brook, and ~ive in Salisbury, Conn., where he removed about the year 1770 or 1771. He died at Salisbury, January 20, 1799, aged sixty-six years. Mrs. Sarah Chapman died March 11 1817. Listed among the children is a JOHN KIRTLAND CHAPMAN born 1766 at West-Brook. John married a Polly MCCOY, and the account ends with "It has not been ascertained where he resided after marriage, nor whether he had any children." Can anyone unravel this? Is it possible to prove the connection between Reuben and John? ONE MUST NOT CONSIDER PUBLISHED RCCOUNTS SUCH AS THE 1854 BOOK RS 1007. RCCURRT£ OR COMPLETE. Gladys Deyo referred us to Helen Fox, so we are not suggesting that we have connected the two. Maybe you can connect them to the Robert Chapman 1616 family if you can prove the Reuben-John thing.

    This is the oldest American Chapman line on which we have any information. Mrs. Burns account of her husbands line spans over seven generations of Chapmans ending with his great grandmother EMILY HOPE CHAPMAN born June 3 1852 in Brooklyn NY. Prio~ to that the account is a typed version, most of which has probably already been published. Mrs. Burns (Carolyn) has made several additions or corrections to the account which we will include when we publish the family genealogy in the newslette~. Beverly also sent a published Or printed version which covers six of her ten generations of Chapmans. Her qreat grandfather BENJAMIN W. CHAPMAN born January 14 1841 in Peoria County, IL beqins her non publlshed account. He died November 6 1914 and is buried in Cromwell, Iowa. He married Almira VINSON February 9 1869 in Stark County, IL. His son FRED S. CHAPMAN was born March 28 1880 in Champaign, IL and he dIed in Cromwell Iowa May 9 1970. where he 15 buried. He married Mary Ellen BERARD February 15 1905 in Cromwell. Their son KENNETH V. CHAPMAN was Beverly's father. He was born September 1 1917 in Cromwell and he died September 14 1971. He is buried in Des I"loines, Iowa. Beverly Dimmick sent pedigree sheets and family group records on her husband's Chapman line that spans six generations of Chapmans. All of their Chapman line is covered in the l854 Robert Chapman book. The Dean's Chapmans span 11 American generations. following the 1854 book through the first six. The following are those additive to the published account: ISRAEL CHAPMAN bern November 26 1780 in Windham County, Vermont was the son of ISRAEL CHAPMAN born June 22 1758. The former Israel married Annis DUNHAM and they had a son ISRAEL CHAPMAN born June 6 1815 in Delaware County, NY who married Martha Jane KENT. They had a son DARWIN PETTIBONE CHAPMAN born December 18 1854 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania who married Eliza YATES. Their son GEORGE O. CHAPMAN was bOrn November 1 1878 in Marion County, Kansas and he married Laura J. LEMMER. Their daughter, ADELINE MARGARET CHAPMAN was born in 1909 and married Lester Chester Dean, the father-in-law of Carol. our Chappie. We contacted four of these as a result of receiving information from a variety of sources. The Dean's contacted us through our ad in THE G£NE~LO&IC~L HELPER and we furnished Carol the name and address of the others. We see no indication that the first four are in contact, and really see no need for any contact. We have referred others interested in the Robert Chapman line to them.

    SAMUEL 1741 CT

    LGG Mrs. L.G. (Jodi) Govig JW Jonathan Wood

    Jodi sent charts on her husband's line which shows his fourth great grandmother to be PERNELlA CHAPMAN born January 21 1777. She married Joshua MEACHAM in Canaan NH. She was the daughter of SAMUEL CHAPMAN born June 4 1741 in Lyme, New London County, CT. He married Hannah FOX who was born June 12 1755. Jonathan's account adds that Permelia was born 1n Grafton County, NH. The 1854 book on Connecticut Chapmans is loaded with Samuels and Hannah's but no Samuel 1741 and no Hannah Fox. As far as we know these two Chappies are not in touch, but then it appears that neither can really help the other.

    THOMAS 1781 VA

    PVK Peggy Kowalski JCC June Chapman Sparks

    Peggy and June have two Chapman ancestors in common. They are THOMAS CHAPMAN born about 1781 in Virginia and his son EDWARD CHAPMAN born about 1812 in Logan County. VA. Edward married Elizabeth [Betty] HUNT January 6 1842 in Pike County, KY. Elizabeth was born

    about 1826 in Pike County, KY and she died April 12 1861 in Logan County, VA. Peggy and June show different mothers for Elizabeth, but we won't get into that. Peggy's Chapman line continues down to her mother. and of course June isfwas a Chapman. Unless one or the other has something new, these cousins can"t reolly help one another at this time. As far as we know they are not in contact.

    WILLIAM 1633 ENGLAND

    EBC Elvin B. Chapman JLC James L. Chapman SEG Samuel E. Goodenough LLH Juanita M. Hall MCH Marion C. Hayes JCS Jean C. Snow

    This is the largest group of Chappies we know about. They belong to the second oldest American Chapman family that 1S in our record, and they probably have same of the most controversial connections. As the controversy clears it is possible some will not be in this group. and it is possible we will add Glenn Schoonover at a later time. We have been doing a series on this line with information published in each issue so far. We also have mentioned it in the Connections feature in the first and third issue.

    There are two lines which are in complete agreement and which also track perfectly with the published account in the 1854 book. They are the lines of Jean Chapman Snow and James L. Chapman. Their American lineage starts with William who was born in England about 1633 and was an early settler of New London County, CT. They continue through JOSEPH CHAPMAN born 1667 and MOSES CHAPMAN born 1711. Mr. Elvin B. Chapman agrees with the Moses Chapman data, but he shows him with a different father, ie JOSEPH CHAPMAN born 1682. This is the Joseph listed in the 1878 book on Edward Chapman of Ipswich, MA. The book and Mr. Elvins line continues through SIMON CHAPMAN born 1644 and EDWARD CHAPMAN who came from England. James L. Chapman advises us that there is a published Chapman book listing some of Edward Chapmans descendants in which it is stated that Joseph Chapman married Mary WENTWORTH February 23 1707 in Rowley, MA., and went to Norwich CT the same year. The book also makes Moses the third child of Joseph. See FAMILY F£ED8~CK for more comments on this book. This could be the source of Mr. Elvin Chapmans information, and we are in no position to say which is correct. Marion Hays line is in aqreement with the others as far back as Moses. He is not satisfied with the information on Joseph and his wife Mercy Or Mary and althcuqh he seems to accept them as his ancestors, he has not made a commitment as to their parents. Mr. Samuel Goodenough is a descendant of the William Chapman mentioned above. but in the next qeneration his line takes a different branch. He is a descendant o·f Wi 11 iam' s son JOHN CHAPMAN born November 1653. His line spans six generations. We have a couple of questions for him which we will handle by correspondence. The last ChapPle who MAY fit it this family is Juanita Hall. We say may because the documentation she sent to us spreads over what appears on the surface to be three or more lines, probably because of the conflicting published versions. Since we do not know which of these dre valid we need to learn more about her sources. We did discuss her line in the first

    issue, but at that time we were not awared of this latest pUblished account. There will probably be more on this family in the next issue, in either our F~HILY FEEDB~CK column or in this column.

    WILLIAM 1662 ENGLAND

    DCG Dian C. Gustafson DDR Dixie Riley MMR Marjorie M. Russell

    These three ladies have been in touch with one another longer than we have been involved with Chapman hi~tory. Each has responded to our inquiries, and from reviewing their data, we are not sure if each has as much as the other, or if maybe some just haven't given us all their lineage. Anyway the following is a composite taken from the three. WILLIAM CHAPMAN born 1662 or earlier in England married Elizabeth SMITH in Essex, MA. Their son WILLIAM CHAPMAN born 1682 in MA died after 1724 in Connecticut. He married first Anna JENKS and second Abigail (Clark) LYON. Their son JONATHAN CHAPMAN born 1722 died 1802 in Ashford CT, married Dorcas CHUBB. Their son REUBEN CHAPMAN born 1761 in Ashford, CT died 1845 in Lodi, Ohio. He married Rhoda PECK November 21 1782. The group splits into two branches here with Dixie following through their son LEVI CHAPMAN born 1784 in Ashford, CT who died in Ohio. He married Lucinda TURNER. Marjorie and Dian follow the line of another son CYRUS CHAPMAN born December 15 1788 in Windsor County, Vermont, died October 3 1865 and he is buried in Fayette County, Iowa. He married Jerusha Dennison HOSMER October 1 1819 in Medina County, Ohio.

    WILLIAM. 1724

    RAG Robert A. GooddinO B2S Betty J. Snell PHE Pauline H. Entrekin

    Bob Goodding was one of our first Chapman contacts. It was he who let us borrow a copy of the 1878 Edward Chapman book long enough to retype it, and he sent us as many or more potential Chappies than anyone else. He identified his line as follows. WILLIAM CHAPM~ born 1724, married 1745 and di.d before 1757. His son GEORGE CHAPMAN born 1747 in Winchester, VA, died June 1812 in New Cumberland, WV. He married Joanne LEMASTER in 1775. She was born 1753 in Frederick County, MD and she died in 1843 also in New Cumberland, WV. Their son HUGH CHAPMAN died about January 1850 in Middleburn, Wetzel, WV. He married Nancy [Annal GRIFFITH. Their daughter JOANNE CHAPMAN was born 1821. died 1869 . and married Abslam WEAKLY. Gooddings records show that Hugh Chapman had a sister named Martha. Betty Snell has a fourth great grandmother MARTHA CHAPMAN who was born Dec 12 1779 and died January 15 1861 in New Cumberland, WV. She married John Van SWEARINGEN who was born 1772. Betty says that there is a possibility that Martha was the daughter of BEORGE CHAPMAN who married Johanna LEMASTERS. (BETTYI Mr. Goodding has several more generations on the Lemasters line). In the EXCH~HGE *4-104 we mentioned Pauline Entrekin's attempt to connect her Mary Jane Swearingen to the Chapman line. In her response to our inquiry she said "Reputedly she was the •••• granddaughter of John Van

    SWEARINGEN born 1772 Beaver County PA (Betty shows Montgomery County, MD) and MARTHA CHAPMAM (Pauline: If this fits, Betty can take your Swearingen line back at least one more generation). Robert Goodding gave us Betty's name so we are not responsible for that connection. We bought Paulines name from a surname exchange, so she is probably new to much of this.

    WILLIAM 1793 KY

    JEC Betty Le Chapman BH Billie Hardy ZH Zona Hardy

    We have referred these three to each other, but we do know Betty Le Chapman had been in touch with Zona Hardy before our contact. Billie Hardy's line is the longest, and encompasses some of each of the others. Hers is. JOHN CHAPMAN married Margaret MANKIN. Their son JOHN CHAPMAN was born about 1700 in Charles County, MD, died before 1765 in Culpeper County, VA. His son DANIEL CHAPMAN was born about 1740 in Orange (Culpeper) County, VA and he died about 1795 in Lincoln County, KY. He married Esther CROCKETT?? about 1760 probably in Rockbridge County, VA. Their son DANIEL CHAPMAN. JR. was born about 1768, probably in Rockbridge VA and he married (1~ Jenny WAINSCOTT January 24 1793 and (2) Rachel BLACK March 24 1814. They resided in Barren County, KY in 1814. Their son WILLIAM CHAPMAN born 1793 in Kentucky died before October 1858 in Morgan County, MO. He married Anna KNIGHT February 1814 in Gallatin County, KY. Their son WILLIAM CHAPMAN born May 1819 in Kentucky, died after 1900 probably in St. Clair County, MO. He married Eliza Mary Jane OWENS March 16 1839 in Henry County, Kentucky. Their daughter MARY ANN CHAPMAN ends Billie's Chapman lineage. Betty Chapman's husbands lineage starts with WILLIAM CHAPMAN born 1819, and it continues through his son CHARLES EDWARD CHAPMAN born November 30 1854. Zona's line started with WILLIAM CHAPMAN born 1793 who married Anna KNIGHT, and it continues on through their son JOHN SHERMAN CHAPMAN born November 19 1814, died 1865 buried 1 mile east of Roxbury, Kansas, married Harriet Matilda OWEN February 15 1837 in Kentucky.

    WILLIAM 1795 VA

    These two have reported data on one common ancestor, and that being the case, Jean is probably being provided with information on two more generation, giving them three common ancestors~ Darla provided the followingl ROBERT CHAPMAN then his son, WILLIAM CHAPMAN born about 1795 in Virginia married Elizabeth FISHER. Their son JOHN C. CHAPMAN born April 1820 in Tennessee, died November 13 1902 in Worth County, Missouri. He married Orpha RIGGS August 20 1843. EDJ:TOR~S COMMENTS

    FAMILY CHARTS and SKETCHES

    In previous issues we have been providing family sketches (genealogies) and family charts on the early New England Chapman families headed by William Chapman and Edward Chapman. You will notice 1n CONNECTING COUSINS and F~MILY FEEDBRCK that that there are conflicting published reports concerning some of the descendants of these two families. The same person is reported to be the descendant of both of these early settlers. Until we can learn more about the situation, we will discontInue the series on these two families, If nothing new is learned in the next few months, we will continue them, with the necessary word of caution to our readers.

    In the meantime. we are providing similar information on other early Chapman families. but we will limit these to one family per issue. Beginning with this issue, we Will also print the same type of information on more recent (19th century) Chapman fami11es, and families who are related to a Chappie. We are beginning this series on pages 10 and 11 with information furn1shed by Dorothy C. Cornwell. Be sure the information you have sent is as complete and current as possible. You will never know when we will be publishing a segment of your family.

    1850 INVENTORV

    We asked for your help on thiS in the last issue and we regret to tell you that we did not get much. The only reason we need the information on the 1850 census is to make It available to those of you who want It, and to consolidate the data to enhance the research capability of Chappies in future generations. Mary and I could do all the research necessary for this project, but then who would do the newsletter, all the correspondence and routIne information exchanqe, and feed the other data you are sending Into the computer? The contacts on our Newkirk and Alford projects have been most cooperative and generous in the contribution of their census information and/or the time needed to research and transcribe the data.

    To st i mul ate your interest, we have included a sample printout of data from the 1850 census on New london County, Connecticut. This is one of the most heavily Chapman populated counties of that census. Mary and [ have already undertaken the research on this county. Two different formats of the census project are printed in this issue. On page 16 is a print out of the family groups. Most of the data is a direct extract from the microfilm and needs no explanation. The family numbers on which the famll1es are summarized are the same as those reported by the enumerator. When two families are numbered consecutively then you can assume they live near one another (see 0778 and 0779). These two families are actually living in the same house (see column "HSE"). The VOB or year of birth was calculated by the computer by subtractIng the age from 1850. It made no allowance for the date of the enumeration. The remarks (REM) column is used for keys to footnotes which will follow each county listing. If the remark 1S preceeded by

    an "*" it indicates the person enumerated had a surname other than Chapman, but was living in a Chapman household.

    The other printout is on page 26 lbackpage) and it is an alphabetical listing of the people arranged by name and town or township. The same general information is included except that a column has been added to identify those who were considered to be heads of the houshold; the "H" column, with "Y" meaning yes. The family number follows Immediately after the name, as it is the key to finding the family group in the other listinq. Names followed by an "*" (print just before the family number) are those who are living separate from a Chapman family in a household of another surname. Those with a surname other than Chapman have been excluded from this list.

    Now, wouldn't it be great for us to work together to prepare a complete list of 1850 Chap mans for our collective use, and for future generations. If YOU and I don't do it. who will? Please tell us you will help.

    CHAPMAN REUNIONS

    We have not heard recently from those responsible for the reunion of the descendants of WILLIAM WASHINGTON and Ruth (BARNES) CHAPMAN. last year it was held on the fourth Sunday in July at Three Forks Baptist Church in Taylorsville. NC. We suspect it will be about the same place and same time this year. The meeting this year Will be the 44th annual reunion. If you desire more information you may contact Mrs. Loyd Harrington, Route 4, Box 320, Taylorsville. NC 28681.

    The descendants of WILLIAM W. CHAPMAN. of Georqia, nat the same as the above, will probably meet the fourth Saturday In June at Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church in Worth County, Georgia. Those seeking additional information on this reunion may write to Rev. Wallace W. Willis 113 Westield Road, leesburg, GA 31763. Rev. Willis is the historian for th i. s group.

    Reports on last years reunion of both of these groups can be found on the back page of our November (#2) issue.

    JOHNNY APPLESEED

    Severa1 Chapp i es h ave asked for Information on this legendary figure who was one of our more famous Chapmans. While he is called a legendary figure in our American History, he also was a real person. For those who do not know, he was John Chapman, born about 1775 in Massachusetts and he died in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana March 11 1847 of pneumonia. We know just a little more about his religious, military, indian and botanical experiences. We would like to do a full feature on him and would like any bits and pieces of information you might have. If you send something, please tell us the source, and what you know about it's validity, if it has been proven or is just information handed down traditionally. If you know of bOOKS that contain information on John (Johnny Appleseed) Chapman, please give us complete references and adv1se if you have the book and would let us borrow it. We will take care of them and return them immediately.

    MAILING DATE

    Try as we might, we just never seem to get the newsletter in the mail on the first of the month as we did with earlier issues. We will continue to try and get the newsletter out early in the month, preferably before the 15th of the month. But, don't give up on us if some months you don't have your issue until later. If you have not heard from us by the end of the month. then you better call or drop us a note. Last month Mary's mother, Della Chapman NeWkirk, who now lives with us; fell and broke her hip. She has undergone surgery and is now in a skilled nursing home. We expect her to be released to our care in a week or so. Needless to say the attention I wanted to give to Mary and her mother did detract some from the preparation of this newsletter.

    SURNAME CROSSOVER

    We are experiencing increasing crossover from one of our surname groups to another. We have an Alford contact who is also a subscriber to our Newkirk newsletter. We also have a Newkirker who is a Chappie, SUbscribing to both newsletters. This is not the type of crossover that we are talking about though. We are talking about a person in one group sending us information on one or both of the others_ For example, Rev Wallace Willis, a Chappie recently sent us considerable information on Alfords in Georgia. One of our Newkirkers in Michigan sent us a list of people interested in Chapman. Another Newkirker in Virginia has sent information she found on the Chapman family.

    We appreaciate this and it is most helpful, but we don't intend to ever take advantage of any of our contacts by directly asking them to do work for one of the other groups. We do want you to know it is being done and that we think it is a good way to strengthen the effort of all three of the groups. Keep in mind that this does not help Mary and me directly as we have our lines pretty well firmed up. It does give us a broader base of data with which we should be able to help more and more of our contacts.

    Two of the most productive areas for this crossover effort is in (1) sending census information (index or detail-- any place ~ any year). (2) Providing us with names and addresses of people who have an interest in the surnames Alford, Chapman or Newkirk as they may be listed in one of the many surname indexes maintained by genealogical organizations around the country. (We do not mean those who sell the data and advertise in the &ENERLOGICAL HELPER. We have already bought all that is available, and it is not much.) We would also appreciate telephone listings of the three surnames. (We will probably also need some of the lnformatlon in the front of the phone book that indicates where the exchanges are located. as we will have to try to key telephone book addresses to ZIP codes ).

    BACK ISSUES

    We are frequently asked if back issues are available. They are and the cost is $3.00 per issue.

    FAMILV FEEDBACK

    THIS WILL BE A REGULAR FEATURE OF EACH ISSUE OF THE NEHSLETTER. HE WOULD EXPECT TO HEAR FROM YOU AS YOU NEED TO GIVE US CORRECTIONS TO OUR ERRORS OR WHEN YOU HAVE SOME DATR TO FILL IN THE MANY GRPS IN THE DATA FILE. IF YOU HRVE RN OPINION OH SOMETHING CHAPMRN RELATED OR IF YOU JUST FEEL LIKE MRKING R COMMENT RBOUT SOMETHIHG IN THE NENSLETTER HE HOULD LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT IT AND HILL PRINT IT IN THIS COLUMN. SOME OF THE READERS OF OUR NEWKIRK OR ALFORD NEWSLETTERS THINK THIS IS THE BEST PP/RT OF ALL. THE GUP/LITY AND USEFULNESS OF THIS ONE HILL DEPEND ON YOU.

    Dorothy C. Cornwell brought our attention to an error in the data file in the second issue. On page 13, issue number 2 we showed the parents of BRIAN CHAPMAN to be Albert H. and his wife Doris. This is not correct. The parents are WILLIAM WARD CHAPMAN and Lois Trudale RENNER. We regret this transposition mistake.

    J.mes L. Chapman wrote us about a book written by JACOB CHAPMAN in 1893 which shows JOSEPH CHAPMAN who married Mary WENTWORTH, as one of the descendants of EDWARD CHAPMAN. This is probably the source of our most popular conflict. See CONNECTING COUSINS under WILLIAM 1633 ENGLAND. If anyone has access to this book we would certainly like to borrow it.

    Mrs. Mary Watson sent us a correction on the lineage table shown on page 15 of our first (August) issue. Starting with her father and going back it is: WALTER CHAPMAN 1878 KS, P. J. CHAPMAN 1855 IL, WILLIAM WASHINGTON CHAPMAN 1824 KY, ROBERT CHAPMAN 1782 NC, NICHOLAS CHAPMAN 1758 MD, and ROBERT CHAPMAN.

    Darla Vogel Davi~ asked that we add two generations to her lineage table on page 11 of the August (first) issue. Her third great grandfther was WILLIAM CHAPMAN and his father was ROBERT CHAPMAN. She says both were probably born in Virginia, but dates are unknown Darla also advises us that she has collected a lot of ~~cl~ Chapman (surname of both bride and groom) marriages in mahY counties of Virginia. If any reader would like her to check her records for a particular Chapman marriage in Virginia, they should write her and send a SASE. Her address is 1 Warbler Lane, Hilton Head Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.

    CHAPMAN IN LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE Lt. Sid Sheppard, the grandson of Mr ••

    Florence C. Pike stationed in Germany picked up an interesting bit of Chapman information. He reported that on June 23 1916 VICTOR E. CHAPMAN was killed in a dogfight in World War I. He was one of the original seven Americans in the Lafayette Escadrille [EsquadrilleJ. As you probably know an Escadrille is French for a squadron of ai rp 1anes. The legendary Lafayette Escadrille was made of young American fliers who joined up with France to help with World War I before the United States was committed to the war. If you know anything aboutVICTOR E. CHAPMAN we would like for you to share it with us and the other readers so that we can learn more about the famous members of our family. If you know of other Chapmans who have distinguished themselves in some manner, we would like to hear about them.

    BENJAMIN CHAPMAN FAMILY

    THE FOLLOWING WAS TAKEN FROM THE BOOK "THE CHAPMAN FAMILY, or the DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT CHAPMAN V WRITTEN IN 1854 BY REV. F. W. CHRPMRN. THIS FRMILY DID NOT DESCEND FROM ROBERT CHRPMAN. BUT IS ONE OF SEVERAL CHRPMAN FAMILIES INCLUDED IN THE BOOK.

    1 _ Benjamin Chapman was born about 1725 and he died June 22 1786. He married Abigail RIGGS, of Derby in New Haven County, Connecticut, who was born about 1728 and she died October 10 1782. The descendants of Rev. Benjamin Chapman were unable to give an account of his parentage when Rev. F. W. Chapman wrote his book in 1854. The prevailing belief among them, at that time however, was that he originated from SayBrook, New London County, Connecticut, but his name was not entered in the register of births there. Rev F. W. Chapman pointed out that with many families, several of the older children are recorded, while the younger are not found there, either because the parents moved before their birth, or became negligent in reporting their names to the town-clerk. In most instances, Rev Chapman was able to ascertain the names and births of those who were nat on the Say-Brook town records from other sources.

    The following facts in regard to Rev. BENJAMIN CHAPMAN were obtained from the records of the church in Southington, and from his grandson, the Han. Reuben A. Chapman of Springfield, Mass. Benjamin graduated at Princeton, in the class of 1754, and was ordai ned and i nst all ed at South i ngton, (then the Third Church in Farmington, Connecticut) March 17 1756. He officiated as the pastor of that church upward of eighteen years, being dismissed September 28 1774. Rev. Chapman was esteemed by his contemporaries, as a sound and useful minister of th~ gospel. He continued, after his dismissial, to reside in Southington until his death, a period of n~arly tw~lve years.

    Their children were;

    i. Abigail Chapman, born October 10 1756, died October 15 1776, never married;

    ii. Ro~well Rigg~ Chapman, barn February 14 1758, di~d September 5 1776 in the Revolutionary Army;

    iii. Sarah Chapman, born May 17 1759, died January 10 1804, never married;

    iv. Clarissa Chapman, born November 22 1761, married Russel ATWATER, two children;

    2 v. Benjamin Chapman, born February 26 1763, married and had at least two children;

    vi. Pamela Chapman, born November 7 1764, married Russel HALLEY, several children;

    3 vii. Samuel Chapman, born June 22 (9) 1766, died December 30 1850, married and had three children;

    viii.Levi Chapman, born October 30 1768.

    BENJAMIN CHAPMAN

    2_ Benjamin, son of Benjamin and Abigail (RIGGS) Chapman, was born February 26 1763, Although he was married, the name of his wife

    is not known. He lived for a time in Russell. Hampden ~ounty, Massachusetts and then move~ to Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio, where he died.

    His children were:

    i. Roswell Rigg5 Chapman, was a merchant who died at Sunbury, Delaware County, Ohio, married and had a family but details not reported;

    ii. Albert Chapman, who was a physician in Dublin, Franklin County, Ohio.
