Why Was This Stormwater Improvements Project Necessary?
In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, when U.S. Highway No. 1 and the FEC Railroad were constructed, they blocked the historical drainage flow from part of the southern Gifford community. In addi-tion, much of this land was low and some of it tended to pond water natu-rally. As a result, water pooled in the low areas even during small rainstorms. Over time, houses and businesses were constructed in these areas and they suf-fered problems due to poor drainage. Health concerns arose due to the stag-nant ponded stormwater. This drainage improvement project will alleviate many of these problems.
