Assignments

This prep work should be done prior to entering the classroom. If a quiz is missed, the student must make arrangements to make up the quiz within one week of the missed quiz. This will be done from 1:45pm -3:00pm on Tuesday or Thursday.

Tests

All tests must be taken on the assigned date. Make up for tests are extremely rare as an alternative test must be administered. Tests are taken as a group. You will have two exams and two quizzes taken as a group.

College Best Practices & College Culture

The big difference in the pedagogy of college is that the student must be a self-learner. This is the goal of all college courses. The student must become well versed in the content of the area through their own efforts. The professor is there to expand and elaborate on the content and learning outcomes beyond the text.

Research Paper and Topic Paper

Research Paper: Due December 9th, 2019: I will provide excellent examples and tutorials on how to correctly prepare a paper written in the APA format. The paper must have five (6) pages minimally with four (4) of those pages as content. Papers should be completed according to all the requirements in APA minus an abstract and hypothesis as we are not conducting an experiment. Choose a psychological disorder of your choice and be sure to sign the list to reserve your choice. Remember to submit your paper four days prior to the due date through Myfscj in Canvas through the Turnitin “Assignment”. Just upload your paper so that you may correct it and resend it prior to the due date. You will then turn in a paper copy of your paper to me on the due date. The highest grade you can receive without a paper is a “D”. Use Times New Roman font (12) double-spaced. I will give you a handout describing the details and facets of the paper.

PLAGIARISM IS CAUSE FOR A GRADE OF “ZERO” FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. Plagiarism is the use of any material that is not your own. This include “cutting and pasting” any material without notation or copying anything verbatim and including it in your paper. Plagiarism will lead to an “F” on the assignment.

APA Writing Style

Written assignments, where applicable, must adhere to APA style guidelines. APA writing resources are available in the Blackboard Tools , Canvas, YouTube, PurdueOwl.org & other resources.

Note: Please refrain from using websites that claim to format your paper without reviewing the official APA style guide. Never use Wikipedia as a reference in your assignments and papers.

Calendar of Activities

The Calendar of Activities is a summary of the weekly lessons and course activities.

Special Note: The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus. You will be notified of any changes.

D 600-699

F 0-599

FN Grade – Failure for Non-Attendance

A Failure for Non-Attendance (FN) grade may be assigned any time after the final withdrawal date. Please refer to the College catalog for additional information.

I Grade – Incomplete

An "I" grade may be assigned at the instructor's discretion to permit the student time to complete required course work, which he/she was prevented from completing in a timely manner due to non-academic reasons. The “I” grade should be considered only when the student has the potential to earn a passing grade if the missing work is made up. To be eligible for the “I” grade, the student must be passing the course at the time of the request and must have completed at least 75% of the coursework.

An “I” Contract must be completed by the instructor and submitted to the Dean for approval and signature. The instructor and the student must sign the contract. The instructor then submits the contract to the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences. All work must be completed within the first eight weeks of the subsequent term, unless the instructor agrees to a longer timeframe (not to exceed one year). When the work is completed, the instructor will submit a grade change via Artemis to the appropriate dean to assign the earned grade (A-F). If the work is not completed by the completion date on this contract, the "I" will be changed to an "F" grade.

Repeating the Course

You may repeat a course in an attempt to improve a grade of “D,” “F,” or “FN” previously earned as long as your cumulative college GPA doesn’t fall below 2.0 and your high school GPA doesn’t fall below 3.0. However, you are limited in your attempts to courses where a “D,” “F,” or “FN” grade was earned. You have only two attempts in any course, including the original grade, repeat grades, and withdrawals.

When you repeat a course at Florida State College, only the last grade earned is calculated in your cumulative grade point average (GPA). If you have an excessive number of “W” or “FN” grades and repeat courses to improve your GPA, you may jeopardize your admission to programs in the Florida State University System (SUS) or other institutions.

Course Guidelines/Policies

Instructor Expectations:

Students in this course should be aware that they are in a unique position to earn both high school and college-level credits for PSY 1012 by participating in the Early College(EC) and/or Dual Enrollment (DE). The instructor expects all of the students to exhibit mature, considerate decorum in the classroom at all times and to be prepared for each lesson by reading the assigned text materials prior to class. Every effort will be made to stick to this syllabus and keep to the schedule outlined herein. It is important for students to actively participate in the class. Students should ask questions, offer answers the instructor’s questions, and actively participate in discussions especially during role play or acting out of psychopathological behaviors. In order for all of this to happen, students must avoid any and all distractions. PLEASE TURN OFF AND STOW ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (TELEPHONES, I-PODS, GAMES, ETC.), PRIOR TO COMING TO CLASS. This is the normal expectation in every college classroom. A designated area has been provided to charge your phone if needed in the back of the room. If there is a true emergency, someone will be able to get in touch with you through the main office or you may step outside the class to attend to the emergency. Please end all texting conversations prior to entering class. Students are expected to produce college-level work, including those assignments outlined in this syllabus. Due-dates for assigned papers will be strictly adhered to. There is no grade recovery for this course.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty, in any form, is expressly prohibited by the rules of the District Board of Trustees of Florida State College at Jacksonville under the guise of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

As used herein, academic dishonesty incorporates the following.

Cheating, which is defined as the giving or taking of any information or material with the intent of wrongfully aiding one’s self or another in academic work considered in the determination of course grade or the outcome of a standardized test. The student will receive an “F” for the grade where cheating occurred and likely the course. You case will then be sent to both DCPS DE administrator and the Dean of College Success at Florida State College. They will decide whether you intentionally cheated and whether it was pre-ordained or pre-meditated. You will receive an “F” for this assignment without recourse and it will be submitted to the Dean of Florida State College for processing. Please don’t place yourself in this situation. We want a positive experience for all students during this course.

Plagiarism, which is defined as the act of stealing or passing off as one’s own work the words, ideas or conclusions of another as if the work submitted were the product of one’s own thinking rather than an idea or product derived from another source. Cutting and pasting something off the internet IS plagiarism. Please don’t destroy your grade by doing this. You will receive an “F” for this

assignment and your case will be submitted to the Dean of Florida State College for processing.

Any other form of inappropriate behavior which may include but is not limited to: falsifying records or data, lying, unauthorized copying, tampering, abusing or otherwise unethically using computer or other stored information, and any other act or misconduct which may reasonably be deemed to be a part of this heading.

Any student alleged to have committed any act of academic dishonesty as defined herein shall be entitled to due process as defined in District Board of Trustees’ Rule 6Hx7–2.18 prior to the administration of disciplinary action including suspension and dismissal.

Attendance Policy

Attendance: It is imperative that you attend all classes and avoid absences. If you are ill, have a family emergency, or some other valid reason for being absent from class, please notify the instructor by e-mail or telephone. If you know you will be absent on the day the research paper is due, you must submit the paper via email. The instructor reserves the right to provide you with an alternative quiz or test due to absenteeism. Please do not be absent on these dates

Late/Make Up Work

Only in extreme emergencies are tests or quizzes taken on a date other than with the class. If a case study is due then you may email it to the instructor. Remember, no advantage may be given to any student that another student would not also receive. Please prepare accordingly. This prevents absent students from gaining an unfair advantage over students who prepare and come to class. Assignments are due on the dates provided.
