Introduction

This booklet is a collation of highlights from projects supported by the UK Department for InternationalDevelopment (DFID) Forestry Research Programme in 2004 - 2005.

This year, we feature seven projects out of the total portfolio of 43 research, development anddissemination projects that FRP supported in 2004-2005. The projects are diverse in approach, from thedevelopment of an on-line herbarium database to influencing policy making in India; from looking at theeffects of environmental payment schemes on people’s livelihoods in Costa Rica to the potential ofcontributing to a new AIDS medicine in Southern Africa. Trees and tree products play an important role inpoor people’s livelihoods and that is reflected in the range of projects FRP supports. As before,‘Prunings’ provides a snapshot view on FRP activities during the year, and does not make an attempt toprovide a comprehensive picture.

The collection of ‘Prunings’ contains now 27 stories that are available on request from FRP. The previoustitles are listed below. ‘Prunings’ complements the series of FRP research summaries which gives moredetailed technical information on completed project clusters since 1963.

Orchestrating regional collaboration with BRAHMS

In the 21st century, using the internet to search forinformation is becoming ever more prevalent indeveloping countries. Good reason for a team ofresearchers from Oxford University to produce aversion of the Botanical Research and HerbariumManagement System, BRAHMS, that allows us-ers to publish their data online.

Collectively, BRAHMS databases, now operatingin some 45 countries, store data and images de-scribing millions of botanical collections – and allof this has the potential to go online.*

Take the example of Wageningen Herbarium, partof an online cluster of BRAHMS databases fromthe Netherlands. Wageningen specializes in Westand Central African botany, producing checklistsand biodiversity surveys for countries such asBenin, Cameroon, Gabon, Liberia and Ghana. Al-though seemingly at most of indirect benefit to thepoor, resources such as the Wageningen databaseprovide a scientific basis for understanding anddeveloping uses for plant species, finding new ge-netic sources for animal fodder, food and crop de-velopment, pharmacology, natural pesticides, fi-bres, dyes and wood products, as well as under-pinning decision making for conservation efforts.

A specific example of how publishing online helpsto share and upgrade species information can beseen in the South East Asia Botanical CollectionInformation Network known as SEABCIN. ThisBRAHMS online group brings together data fromherbaria in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Netherlands,Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. A vast numberof specimens held in these herbaria are duplicatedregionally but are only correctly named in one ortwo of the institutes. Preliminary studies indicatethat in some plant groups, up to 40% of the speci-mens are wrongly named in one or more herbariayet have a correctly named duplicate elsewhere.

In this not atypical example, a search of the SEABCIN online group on the genus Hopea hasfound and auto-matched duplicates of the botanical collection Kochummen 85263 held atherbaria in the Malay peninsula, Philippines, Leiden and Sabah with different identificationsat each.

The money trees

R7588: Mesoamerican tree species: a sourcebook for farm planting and ecologicalrestoration

When a 3 kg book becomes a household item forhundreds of extension officers, a revolution hastaken place. It is just what has happened after thepublication of “Árboles de Centroamérica” by ateam of researchers from Oxford University andCATIE, the Costa Rica-based regional agriculturaltraining and research centre.

Spreading out into all Central American countries,the teams of certified trainers have reached over1000 extensionists, technicians and teachers whoin turn train women groups, small-scale farmers,indigenous groups and producer organisationsthrough a snowball effect.

But it is not only the technicians and farmers whohave realised the value of this unique resource:Ambassadors have taken it on to promote the pub-lication and the accompanying website to their in-country collaborators; academic institutions andextension centres are keen to use the informationin their training events.

The success of the resource book is due not onlyto the diligent research of the team, but also to theirclose collaboration with local teams of extensionistsand significant flexibility in approach. Early on inthe project, it was the local collaborators who in-sisted in changing the project plan to allow for moretraining of local trainers, thus getting the snowballrolling.

Worms against HIV/AIDS

R7822: Mopane woodland ecology and worm management

Sounds like a fairy tale? One of those “…lived hap-pily ever after…” bedtime stories? Actually, it is thestory of a new food supplement, concocted frominkomfe (Hypoxis rooperi), a South African plant,and mopane worm, the caterpillar of the southernAfrican Emperor moth.

Researchers from Imperial College London andcollaborators in Botswana, Zimbabwe and SouthAfrica came across the story and the new food sup-plement during their investigations into the devel-opment of household scale mopane worm farm-ing, together with improvements in the processing,drying and storage of mopane worms. Mopaneworm has an extremely important function in ruralsociety as a readily available source of protein thatcontains all the amino acids needed by the humanbody. Although insect protein cannot normally beabsorbed by the human body to the same extentas animal protein, when combined with H. rooperi,the insect protein can be absorbed more fully.

The research team is now investigating the possi-bilities of establishing regional buying networks tosatisfy the increasing demand for a predictable sup-ply of good quality mopane worms by the local pro-ducer of the food supplement. The producer haspromised to pay a higher than market price for prop-erly processed worms.

hospital to die. He was sufferingfrom AIDS and there was nothingmore the hospital could do. Hisstate was so bad that his familyhad already made arrangements

for his funeral. Then someone gavehim a new medicine and within a

few days he was up and about witha growing appetite. Within a week

he walked to get his pension.”

A new resolution

R8101: Review of participatory forest management support processes

The 38 participants at the research disseminationworkshop in Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, In-dia, are unanimous: the Joint Forest ManagementOrder of 1989 needs revision. But what parts shouldbe changed? Where is the background informa-tion with which to justify the changes?

The research team from University of East Anglia,UK with their Indian partners can provide just thatinformation. Having worked for the past two yearstogether with local people, social activists, NGOsand academic institutions, the team can providethe Principle Chief Conservator of West Bengal andhis colleagues with just the kind of information nec-essary to change laws.

The result is even surprising the researchers andworkshop participants themselves: within only 7days of the workshop a revised Order is issued.This new order provides fairer access rights tomarginalised users including women, and recog-nises the need for more flexibility in community-based forest management. The new order is notjust a piece of paper; it will directly and indirectlybenefit over half a million poor families in WestBengal’s rich forests.

But the researchers see this resolution as only afirst small step in overhauling Joint Forest Man-agement to ensure it becomes pro-poor. Researchis being conducted in, and recommendations areformulated for, three States in India, and in Nepal.There are a projected 100 million forest dwellers inIndia alone, with a further 275 million directly de-pendent on the forest resource. By providing a fo-rum for debate, the project is opening up avenuesfor changes in management itself, and in the par-ticipation of disadvantaged tribal groups.

Only for conservationists ?

When the team of researchers from the Universityof Newcastle and the International Institute for En-vironment and Development in the UK and theNational University of Costa Rica set out to inter-view small-scale producers in the Arenal watershedin Costa Rica, they wanted to take a closer look atthe successes of the world’s first national schemefor payments for environmental services. CostaRica has been much acclaimed for being the fore-runner in the design of such payments to landown-ers in the upper areas of important watersheds tomaintain forest cover for the benefit of downstreamusers.

However, what the team learnt from livestock andcoffee farmers and small scale tourism operatorshighlights the complexity of the issue. Not only wasthere little involvement from small and medium land-owners because of the long-term nature of the con-tracts which prohibits the flexibility they need toreact to changes in the market; another major is-sue of concern was that the payment scheme wasonly provided to those few producers with formalland titles, whereas informal possession rights arethe norm here.

At the moment the scheme seems to benefit thosefarmers who are wealthy enough to put land asideand it seems to support the conservation of landthat is not necessarily in danger of conversion.Bringing together groups of small landowners iscostly and few are willing to take up the challenge.

Lack of information and poor communication aboutadditional tangible benefits of forest conservation,such as biodiversity, landscape beauty and carbonsequestration, are to blame. The researchers areconvinced that the Costa Rican payment for envi-ronmental services scheme could be made valu-able to small-scale producers and not “just to con-servationists” if small-scale operators, downstreamusers and government institutions can come to-gether to the negotiation table.

Medicines without borders

With livelihoods threatened and income reducing,more and more people in rural Africa will remaindependant on traditional health care. They cannotafford “Western” medicines and even if they could,in many areas there is only one doctor per 50,000people. However, there is one herbalist per 157people who dispenses health care derived fromplants – many of which are collected from the wildand from forests. Traditional medicine collection,which is often viewed as a subsistence activity, canin fact be large-scale and highly commercial asscientists from South Africa, Malawi and Zambiaare discovering.

The trade in herbal medicine is biggest in SouthAfrica, where market women sell large volumes ofdry and fresh herbs, roots and bark products whichare sourced from indigenous forests in South Af-rica and imported from Mozambique, Malawi andeven as far north as Uganda. In Maputo, Mozam-bique, over 70% of the herb traders have SouthAfrican customers.

When the team liaised with the border control offi-cials at Mwanza, Malawi to study the cross-bordertrade into Mozambique, it found that around oneperson a day is carrying medicinal plants. On av-erage, each person carried over 35 kg of plantmaterial, mainly destined for South Africa.

With these huge quantities of plant material cross-ing the continent, and many foresters unaware ofthe scale of damage to the forests, the scientistsare studying sustainable harvesting methods fortree bark. The results will be presented as manu-als for use by Forestry Officers in southern Africancountries to prepare management plans to sustaintheir national pharmacies.

Fruitful processes

R8399: Processing and marketing tree fruits

For any visitor arriving in a South-East Asian coun-try, the immediate impression is of the vast varietyof exotic and strange fruits that attracts the eye andnose. Gigantic jackfruit, knobbly sugarapple, tangytamarind and aromatic persimmon are some of thefruits that call for our attention at the local markets.

Many of these fruits have uses far beyond theirfresh sale, and if processed into innovative prod-ucts, they can be sold for a premium to help im-prove the livelihoods of many. Researchers fromthe International Centre for Underutilised Crops,previously based at Southampton University, haveteamed up with local partners and establishedTraining Resource Centres in six countries in South-East Asia.

In a series of training courses, 95 dynamic entre-preneurs in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lankaand Vietnam learned how to produce jams, fruitleather, chutney, drinks, candy, fruits in syrup andthe like, and how to set up a fruit processing enter-prise. Through hands-on training, tasting sessionsand jointly stirring the jam-pot, the participants arenow skilled to set up their own business and to trainothers. Training materials and processing flow-charts in local languages can be posted on the wallsof the new kitchens as a ready reminder.
