PROVIDE FIRST AID IN A SPORTS SETTING Overview This course is designed to meet the first aid training requirements of those volunteering or working in a sport and recreation environment. Provide First Aid in a Sports Setting meets compliance requirements of a Workplace First Aider and includes a unit in initial management of sporting injuries. It provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to assess sporting injuries; provide first aid management and relevant referral of the athlete; and to manage the ill or injured athlete until professional medical aid arrives in a sporting environment. It provides the participant knowledge to enable them to effectively support the athlete, team management and coaching staff. Please note: it is an assessment requirement of this course that the participant be able to competently perform 2 minutes of continuous adult CPR on the floor. Course Content • Legalities, infection control and the roles and responsibilities of the Sports First Aider • Management of unconscious, breathing and non- breathing casualties using the DRSABCD Action Plan (including CPR and AED skills) on an adult and infant • Assessment of sports injuries • Recognition and treatment of casualties experiencing shock • Initial management of strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures • Head, neck and spinal injuries • Facial and eye injuries • Management of medical emergencies including chest pain, asthma, anaphylaxis • Sports specific injury management Competencies The course leads to a Statement of Attainment for Provide First Aid in a Sports Setting for the following units of competency: SISSSPT302A : Provide Initial Management of Sports Injuries HLTAID001 : Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation HLTAID002 : Provide Emergency First Aid HLTAID003 : Provide First Aid Provided Training Materials • Personal Protective Equipment (for use in the course) • St John “Emergency First Aid” publication Pre-requisites Participants with a language or literacy difficulty or other special needs should inform the training support staff or trainers so appropriate assistance can be arranged. It is highly recommended that participants complete the pre-course work prior to attendance and volunteer or are employed in a sport and recreation environment. As per the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, First Aiders should attend training on a regular basis to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills and confirm their competence to provide first aid. The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) www.resus.org.au recommends the CPR competency be recertified annually. NOTE: Your organisation or it’s regulating body may require you to renew this course, or units within this course on a 12 or 24 month basis. Overview

This course is designed to meet the first aid training requirements of those volunteering or working in a sport and recreation environment. Provide First Aid in a Sports Setting meets compliance requirements of a Workplace First Aider and includes a unit in initial management of sporting injuries.

It provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to assess sporting injuries; provide first aid management and relevant referral of the athlete; and to manage the ill or injured athlete until professional medical aid arrives in a sporting environment.
