Future Human DevelopmentLtd (FHDL)Part of Future Group, Future Human Development (FHDL) was set up with the primary focus of creating

talent in the consumption industry, be it retail, hospitality, telecom or any similar industry. With the view

to leverage the group’s understanding of the consumer-centric business of consumption and its vast

experience in the training and development of its 30,000 employees, FHDL was incorporated in 2008

and mandated with the responsibility of providing domain specific training and certification to the group

and other organisations. FHDL is also responsible for talent acquisition, talent management and talent

retention for the group.

The programmes have a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach with unique training methodologies

like ‘story telling’ and ‘Vikram & Vetal’ questioning method. With stories chosen from our rich heritage

and encouraging learning through asking, the students relate to concepts better and internalise them

faster. The training methodology is designed around adult learning techniques and is thus experiential,

involving on-the-job training, role-plays, simulations and business scenarios. Even the popular mode of

greeting one another saying ‘Namaste’ with folded hands is given a unique meaning - ‘I am

acknowledging the potential of the other person’. This creates a better ‘guru shishya ’ relationship in

learning with FHDL.

FHDL has a team of professionally qualified content writers who design and develop comprehensive,

relevant training modules that can be customised to the client’s context. The team’s extensive domain

knowledge ensures that the curriculum and methodologies for training are continuously reviewed in

light of an ever-changing business scenario.

FHDL has created three state-of-the-art campuses in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata and they are

equipped with classrooms, auditoriums, mock rooms, library, residential and other student-centric

facilities. FHDL’s training programmes however can be delivered pan-India.

FHDL – IGNOU collaboration is set up as an initiative towards education to enrich the human resource

base in the country, with its expertise in the field of retail and general management. FHDL in

collaboration with IGNOU has planned to offer Credit and Non- Credit Programmes viz; Undergraduate

Programmes and Post Graduate Programmes under credit and few other short term programmes

under Non Credit.

Purpose of this Collaboration

• To encourage and impart knowledge in the field of retail management, retail operations and

General Management

• To develop and evolve as a Centre of Excellence in this part of the world for various career oriented

learning streams

• To promote professional and industry oriented education through the industry-institution

collaboration model

To pursue this goal, FHDL has entered into an agreement with IGNOU, the largest Open University with

a truly global reach. This would ensure that the certificates, diploma and degree programmes offered by

FHDL under the patronage of IGNOU would be recognized all over the world.

Message from the Group ChiefExecutive Officer, Future Group

Namaste!

Revival of economic growth and increasing purchasing power of consumers outline the massive

potential for growth of the consumption sector and the related segments like services and modern retail

in India. The growth of the services sector and consumer-led industries like modern retail has created a

huge demand for trained manpower to sustain and build upon this growth. Every company in the

services and retail sector feels the dearth of skilled professionals which can be somewhat attributed to

the lack of relevant and quality education in retail domain.

Being the training solution provider of Future Group, Future Human Development Ltd. is taking this

great initiative of offering post graduate and graduate programmes which are not only relevant for the

retail but for the Service Industries with a distinguishing combination of academic excellence and

industry relevance in association with renowned university IGNOU.

The service industry in general and the retail industry in particular has an array of activities and one can

take up job depending on their interest and aptitude and these courses sure will prepare them for a

challenging and rewarding career in India’s most promising business sectors.

2. Internship & Viva

a. Internship

The student joining these graduate and post graduate courses would have come from various

disciplines not necessarily has an exposure to management education. The basic knowledge on

management subjects comes through theory classes from the first semester onwards. It is also very

important to make them feel and experience the business environment where they are going to be

placed on completion of these courses. This practical exposure is carefully planned in a phased out

manner right from the first semester onwards. In the first semester the student will get an exposure to

the business environment.

For e.g.- In the retail programme they’ll be visiting stores of various formats and understand the

business environment. In the second semester they’ll learn the various processes and systems in

various formats. In the third semester the students will have hands- on experience in sales and

customer service as these two functions are the lifeline of any retail organization. In the fourth semester

the students will be given an individual project on a specific retail functional area like visual

merchandising or supply chain management. Or they’ll be given a group project involving a team of 3-4

students if it is an elaborate project work.

Each internship will be of 30 days duration. The students will be bound by the rules and regulations of

the particular store or back end office that they are assigned to. Students will be maintaining a

workbook during the internship and will be completing all the exercises listed based on their learning.

Internship will be planned based on the pre-prepared schedules. Internship schedules will be prepared

in such a way that students will be given such exposures which will make them understand and practice

the concepts that they have learnt in the classroom. Internship is a longer duration programme (may be

of 30 days each) whereas field visits are scheduled on day to day basis for specific purpose (Could be

for an assignment, exercise, presentations, case studies etc.).

During the internship each student will be allotted a mentor who will be of middle management cadre

and he/she will be guiding them during the internship period. The mentors will submit a report on each

student allotted to them in the prescribed format given to them. This will be a comprehensive report on

the learning aptitude, attitude and general discipline of the students.

As part of learning through Internship, store visits are scheduled to give a ‘on the job’ experience to the

students. These visits are planned as a part of the courses other than internships. Students are sent to

stores of both value formats and life style formats to experience different kind of customer profiles,

buying patterns, service standards and factors influencing business. During the store visit the students

are governed by the rules and regulations of the stores and its timing. They’ll be wearing their identity

card. Each student is allotted a mentor and they will report to them for all store visits related activities. At

the end of store visits the students will make a presentation to the institute on their learning. These

presentations will be assigned specific weight age of marks in a particular course (other than internship)

based on the performance of a student.

Store visits will be scheduled on week days to learn the processes better during lean business hours.

The students will also be visiting the store during Big Sale Days to learn crowd management, quick

billing, queue management, merchandise replenishment, customer grievance handling and other

important store operations related activities.

b. Viva

On completion of internship the students will meet a panel of senior professionals from the institute and

the organization in which the internship was done, to discuss their learning. The students will be asked

questions regarding their learning during the internship period and assessed. Grades will be awarded

Store visits

based on the assessment. Participation in the internship, maintaining notes, discussion with mentors,

mentor’s report on student’s attitude and ability to execute work in the field study, viva voce on the work

done/workbook written, etc. will carry 100% weight age for the courses on internship and viva 1 and 2.

3. Term-end examination

This component carries a weight age of 50%. Term-end exams with be held in the months of June and

December, every year as per the University Calendar. The examination calendar appears on the website

of the university well before Feb/March or Aug/Sept every year. The students are at liberty to appear in

any of the examinations conducted by the University during the year. A student will be allowed to

appear in the Term-end examination, only after he/she has fulfilled all requirements like attendance,

assessment performance etc..

As a student of MBA in Retail / MBA Entrepreneurship you are required to undertake a major individual

piece of research work - the Project or Dissertation. In contrast to the other elements of your

programme, where you are guided fairly closely, the aim of the Project is to give you the opportunity to

learn independently and show that you can identify, define and analyze problems and issues and

integrate knowledge in the business context. It is an important part of the programme that tests your

ability to understand and apply the theory, the concepts and the tools of analysis to a specific problem

situation.

The only precise rule on what constitutes an acceptable project is that it should be an ordered critical

exposition, which affords evidence of reasoning power and knowledge of the relevant literature in an

approved field falling within the subject matter of the programme – Retail Management /

Entrepreneurship. The emphasis should be on applied research and the investigation of some practical

problem or issues related to the situation in which an organisation or system operates.

5.Soft Skills, Language Proficiency and Communication

a. Soft skills

All these management programmes require good people skills. The students will be working in people

intensive industries. Soft skill programmes are packed with activities, simulations and exercises as real

learning happens when we are able to apply what we learnt to our own life. Soft skill training includes

good communication skills, business etiquette, time management, team skills, stress management etc.

In a business environment it is very important to be well groomed and mannered. Students are trained in

basic business etiquette to make good impression during business interactions and social gatherings.

Effective Time Management can be acquired well by personal discipline and using right kind of tools.

The students will be trained on these tools to organize their time better. Stress is one of the highest

contributors to poor productivity. Managing stress free life is possible by applying the right kind of

techniques.

b. Language Proficiency

Getting employed in a good organisation in India is increasingly being associated to the ability to speak

fluent and correct English which is the most widely spoken language in the world. Language Proficiency

programme is designed to enhance the English speaking skills of any individual who wishes to be

successful in this highly competitive world. With its primary focus on speaking skills, this extensive

programme also covers other aspects such as listening, reading and writing.

c. Communication Skills

Inability to communicate effectively makes it really impossible for people to compete effectively in work

place and it stands in the way of their career progression. To be successful in their career, the students

will be groomed to become an effective communicator through Active Listening Skills, Effective

Questioning Skills, Presentation Skills and Non verbal Communication Skills.
