COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Effective communication is important in all health care settings, but is critical when caring for patients and families with palliative and end of life care needs. Not knowing what to say is common, and managing sensitive conversations can be difficult. Using experiential methods, our Communication Skills courses meet the needs of different staff groups and focus on enhancing participant's skills and confidence in dealing with challenging emotions and difficult conversations.

SYMPTOM MANAGEMENTIN PALLIATIVE CARE
Symptom management is an essential component of holistic, person-centred care. Our Symptom Management in Palliative Care courses have been developed to enable practitioners to care for patients with advanced life-limiting progressive diseases and their loved ones. They are designed to develop the attitudes and skills necessary to gain an understanding of the underlying principles of the assessment and management of complex symptoms.
The number of people living and dying with dementia in Northern Ireland is expected to triple over the next 30 years, reflecting a global trend. Dementia is not a normal part of ageing and can affect anyone. Whilst there is increasing recognition that this is a progressive illness which would benefit from a palliative approach, the time, respect, and dignity expected for other terminal conditions is sadly not always afforded to people living with dementia.
