Gisborne Intermediate is focused on meeting the unique characteristics and needs of emerging adolescents. Our aim is to grow great people by working in partnership with parents, in preparing our young people for living in the 21st century and to be positive, contributing members of society.

We provide high quality teaching and learning programmes, with a clear focus on ensuring that all students learn and achieve to the highest possible level in the core areas of literacy and numeracy. All students are exposed to a broadly balanced holistic programme, designed to develop the whole person so that they are able to excel at high school and beyond. To this end there are numerous opportunities for students to experience and excel in academic, cultural, sporting and leadership activities. We encourage our students to take risks, to go out of their comfort zones and be exposed to new experiences.

Parents, community members, students and staff enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the school. It is a positive place where everyone is able to feel happy, important and respected for who they are. Our school is always open to visitors during school hours. If you would like to visit and look around we are happy to organise either a staff

member or a student to accompany you.

I look forward to meeting you and working in partnership with you to provide the best possible learning environment and

opportunities for your child.

When I first walked through the gates of GisInt I didn’t know what to expect. After only three terms I have already found GisInt has something for everyone.

No matter what your interests or passions are GisInt will have something for you. Within my short time at GisInt I have been involved in sports such as netball, cricket and tennis. I have also done

ukulele, music extension, Otago maths, speeches and science fair.

Intermediate is so different from primary and offers so much more. I got placed into a class of 87 kids with 3 amazing teachers. At the start of the term I was a nervous about going into a big class

but after the first day I felt welcome and privileged to be there.

Even though I am in a class with 86 other kids I still get one on one time with teachers and still feel recognised. What I enjoy about Gisint is that it isn’t just about sport. It is really focused on providing

quality cultural, academic and leadership experiences too. GisInt really does have something for everyone and this is a place where you can build on existing talents and uncover new ones. It has

been an awesome fit for me.

Growing great teachers...

How we continue to develop a high performing staff

Gisborne Intermediate School is committed to developing high performing teachers. We understand that we can promote amazing philosophies, promise wonderful opportunities and create high expectations and then we have to deliver. Giving every learner access to a teacher who delivers best practice and is focused on continual personal improvement is imperative to meet the needs of each and every student we get the privilege to work with. Integral to providing a high quality education is ensuring we employ outstanding teachers. This is something on which we place an extremely high priority.

Professional learning opportunitiesWe invest in staff by giving them access to experts in education. New Zealand has an abundance of professionals who have a proven track record in making a difference in education. We support staff to tap into that knowledge and encourage them to adopt approaches which make an impact and improve the educational outcomes for all learners. Looking outside our local school community not only offers the opportunity to be exposed to new ideas, but often provides reassurance that we can match best practice from within our profession right here at Gisborne Intermediate.

Professional learning conversationsOur staff have scheduled meetings with management and colleagues to engage in dialogue around their practice and explore progress being made against personal learning goals. Learning is not just the domain of students as we expect our staff to be on a continual journey of self-improvement themselves. Whilst these learning conversations create accountability around student data and wellbeing, it also energises staff to seek improvement and be better than they were yesterday. Teaching is a dynamic

industry which is challenged with constant change. Rather than accepting the status quo, our staff are looking for ways to evolve in order to give learners the best possible deal.

Professional accountabilityOur staff are well used to providing evidence they are making a difference. Making impacts on student achievement and wellbeing can be measured. We have a culture of requiring teachers to inquire into the impact of their teaching and to respond accordingly. Whilst opportunities for celebration are provided, our teachers understand that a great school is built on the foundation of great teaching and learning. They are constantly self-reviewing, being coached and have observations to help them grow.

We are proud of the quality of teaching staff we have at Gisborne Intermediate School. This is not down to luck. We have robust systems of inquiry and support to ensure that every teacher is having a positive impact on student learning and wellbeing. This is delivered in a supportive way which teachers appreciate and creates a happy environment where people love coming to school to work, learn and have fun on a daily basis.

Digitally enhanced classrooms

Our focus is on utilising the equipment to enhance the learning of literacy, numeracy and inquiry learning. An environment suited to diverse learning needs from those who need significant support in their learning through to the talented student. There is a balance of computers to book work with students using digital activities to support their learning; web quests, interactive games and teacher created challenges. Accessing an ever increasing range of digital resources and online learning programmes enhances the inquiry-based learning programme.

Digital access for all classroomsGisborne Intermediate is a place of learning which encourages learners to bring their own device (BYOD).

Our school has successfully integrated Chromebooks as a device to support learning and we believe this is a smart investment. A machine with at least 4GB of memory is recommended.

We do not allow cell phones or iPods in classrooms. Please talk to one of our staff members if you require further information.

All classrooms have an interactive whiteboard or TV, some networked computers and Chromebooks which have controlled and monitored access to the Internet.

Today’s students - the generation of digital learners - expect to be connected anywhere, anytime. For many years our BOT has invested a significant amount of money to ensure that all classrooms are digitally enhanced.

Wow, I can’t believe my time here at GisInt is almost at an end! This school has taught me so much and I’m very sad to be departing at the end of the year. I am fortunate enough to be a part of our Takitimu

whanau.

The teachers and students are so amazing. We are encouraged, supported, inspired and pushed to be the best we can be. Our standards are set high and at no time are expectations lowered. My highlights for

2018 have been our trips to Omaio, Muriwai, Manutuke, Waihirere and going to Auckland for Action week. Actually coming to school every day is a highlight. My class and I have enjoyed so much learning outside

the classroom. We have been learning through exploration of the best parts of our own little piece of paradise.

There are so many opportunities to be exposed to here at GisInt. Being included in sporting, academic, cultural, and leadership activities at the school has helped me develop so much as a person. I have had

loads of fun learning new things, meeting new people, spending a great amount of time with my teachers and friends, and growing into the individual I’ve become today. I feel privileged to have attended GisInt.

Classroom learning optionsAt Gisborne Intermediate we recognise that the quality of teaching has the biggest impact on our learners.

Our commitment is to develop high performing teachers who continually look for improvement in a rapidly changing world.

We appreciate that different classroom environments will suit different learners. Rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all approach to educating your child, we are evolving a range of environments that best meet the needs of individuals and their preferred learning styles.

As we prepare learners for an increasingly diverse, globalised and media-saturated society, schools are being challenged to equip students with the skills to cope with the demands of an uncertain future. We offer two types of classroom environments which have slightly different approaches but prioritise students’ learning needs with a view to learners being able to reach their full potential and having an eye on the future.

These are:

TRADITIONAL SETTINGWhilst educational approaches have evolved over time and students are more active in the learning process than they were many decades ago, the traditional model of one teacher working in a classroom with a group of learners has largely remained unchanged. Teachers have become skilled

at meeting the academic and social needs of a diverse range of learners through a combination of whole class, group and individual teaching. For some learners this approach works. Many parents feel secure in this method of delivering educational outcomes knowing that just one teacher will be responsible for meeting their child’s needs on a daily basis.

Collaborative TeachingIn 2016, our school embarked on a journey of embracing modern learning requirements with the creation of our first collaborative classroom. After extensive research and professional development, we now have groups of teachers who jointly teach alongside learners in one collaborative environment. They facilitate personalised learning in an environment where students are reflective in owning their learning. Providing self-determination, this collaborative teaching and learning approach is seen by the school and wider educational community as having real advantages moving forward. We have created these environments in some settings in order to deliver a responsive and future focused education.

Page 13: PROSPECTUS 2019 - Gisborne Intermediategisint.school.nz/assets/gisint_prospectus2019.pdf · 2019-03-25 · Digitally enhanced classrooms Our focus is on utilising the equipment to

WOW! I can’t believe that my first year at Gisborne intermediate is nearly over. GisInt is filled with so many bright opportunities. I get to work with amazing and encouraging teachers who make everything meaningful and fun.

I have been lucky enough to be a part of so many learning experiences. Some in the class and some out of school such as Turanganui Heritage trails, MindLab visits, planting on Titirangi and many more. Some of my highlights at GisInt this year have been being part of the squash team going away to Tauranga, having marae noho at Omaio, Muriwai and Waihirere as well as going away to Tumeke Taupo for an action packed week.

I have met so many cool people who have become some of my closest friends and everybody in this school is now my whanau. I am really looking forward to 2019 and being a positive leader as a Year 8. Coming to GisInt is an experience you are sure to love.

Lane Bartlett

GisInt has been an absolute blast for me personally over the last two years. The school has so many incredible opportunities in culture, sport, leadership and academic areas.

My passion has been in the area of performing arts and I have had some wonderful opportunities to shine. If you like performing on the stage then this school is for you. I have been to Stage Arts, AIMS Games and been involved in a number of school performances. I have loved it! What I appreciate most about the school is that

everyone is very helpful and respectful of our strengths and our weaknesses.

The teachers support us to grow and are really nice. They are sometimes really funny too. I’m really going to miss GisInt because it has been the best two years of my school life so far. I’m so glad I have had the GisInt

experience though.

Jeremy Auckram

My two years at Gisborne Intermediate have been the best two years of my life. Every day I look forward to coming to school as I know I will learn and have fun.

There is an unbelievable amount of opportunities that GisInt has to offer whether you are into sport, academic, culture or much more. Some of the opportunities that I have been involved in include swimming, ultimate frisbee,

triathlon, beach challenge, academic and cultural extensions.

The teachers at GisInt are so inspiring. They are so enthusiastic and passionate about giving us the best education possible. Action Week is always a highlight and is an example of how the school goes the extra mile

for us. Living the RISE values of respect, integrity, self-management and excellence is a big thing at Gisborne Intermediate. GisInt truly lives by their motto “Growing great people”. Coming to Gisborne Intermediate is a

decision you simply won’t regret. I certainly haven’t.

Sophie Petro

Heading into intermediate was scary as I didn’t know what to expect. Now, after one year and three terms my thoughts about this school have definitely changed. The amount of opportunities here are unreal! The range of activities from sporting, academic, leadership and cultural surprised me so much.

I am so impressed that this school finds so many ways to rewards people and inspire us to try new and different things. The badge system is an example of this. Our school RISE values make people want to reach their potential and earn our SOW (Student of the Week) accolade.

GisInt is also big on choice and we have Learning Hubs of different sizes. Different environments suit different learners. Another great thing about this school is Action Week. It offers incredible experiences. Sadly this is my last year at GisInt. There is no doubt that for me, these two years have been the best school years of my life!

Luke Stoltenburg

Ka tangi te titi, Ka tangi te kaka, Ka tangi hoki ahau, Tihei Mauri Ora! My first year at GisInt has been like starting a new life. From the day I walked through the gates I was blown away by how many opportunities there were available to us. I am proud to be part of this school and have taken up so many opportunities. It has been insane.

I feel very lucky to be part of the Takitimu Learning Hub. We are one big whanau where our teachers are amazing and they work hard to make our learning fun and enjoyable. I love how many hands-on learning experiences we do about our rohe, Turanganui-A-Kiwa. We have had four noho marae at Omaio, Muriwai, Manutuke and Waihirere and through these learning experiences, my learning of Te Reo Maori has been encouraged and nurtured. The students in my class are amazing too. We all care about each other and I am thrilled to be a part of our whanau.

One of my highlights this year, has been receiving the honourable Student of the Week award. I felt recognised for my efforts to live our important school values. I love GisInt and I know I made the right decision coming here. It’s been a life changing experience so far. I look forward to 2019 as there’s still so much I want to do.

What I have learned most about coming to Gisborne Intermediate is that there are so many opportunities! I spent 6 years at Mangapapa School and I thought they offered lots of exciting things but this school is next level. It is cool that there are more opportunities than just sport.

The academic, cultural and leadership opportunities have a strong influence on one’s personal growth. This school is big on values where we are able to learn to be more reliable and responsible members of the community. This school is about giving you the chance to learn new skills and be a better person.

I really enjoy how supportive and caring the teachers in my hub are. I get access to more than one teacher which is awesome. I connect diffidently with each of them. The kids here are fantastic too. Everyone is so friendly and it is so easy to make friends. If you want to enjoy coming to school each day then this would be a great choice.

Azra Cairns

I have only been at Gisint for 3 terms and I am already having a blast! At first I was nervous coming from a really small school into a big one but it has been great. I am in a class of about 87 kids and 3 teachers. I thought it

was gonna be crazy and not be good for me but it has developed my leadership and it’s immensely helped my learning!

I have been off to a number of sports trips this year in the Bay of Plenty and can’t wait for more. So far my highlights at Gisborne Intermediate would be all the sporting opportunities. I have made it into the GisInt teams

in swimming, lake swim, touch, ultimate frisbee, hockey and netball. I have also been involved in exciting events such as Stage Arts. Hopefully there is more to come!

I like the fact the school encourages everyone to try new things and become an all-round student. The environment at GisInt has me excited about coming to school every day. The teachers are amazing and there is no

place I’d rather be!

Jodiesha Kirkpatrick

Being a new student at GisInt is so nerve racking to start with but you soon realise that this is such a cool school. I was so excited and happy to find out I was in Takitimu this year and I haven’t been disappointed.

The teachers are so encouraging and they do everything they can to make our learning fun. They encourage us to make the most of our time at GisInt and they push us to our limits. Gisint has been the best year of my life to

date and there is so much more to come. All of the kids here are so nice and we are all a whanau. I have had the opportunity to represent my school through sporting and cultural activities. I have been away for swimming, basketball and netball. I have performed at the Stage Arts competition in Napier and competed at the Tamararo

Kapa Haka Regionals here is Gisborne.

The opportunities are endless. I have made heaps of new friends and love coming to school each day. I have been fortunate enough to learn lots about my whakapapa, my ancestors and my culture here at Gisborne Intermediate. I feel like I have made the most of the opportunities that have been available to me and I can’t wait for next year

when I’m a Year 8. I definitely recommend Gisborne Intermediate. It has been the best decision I have made.

Kassie Owen

I felt so nervous about moving to intermediate but I knew early on that GisInt was the right school for me. Our school is well known for its endless opportunities and RISE values which help students learn and be the best they can be. I have really enjoyed being a part of our Turanganui 2017 and Takitimu 2018 whanau. We spend lots of time outdoors to support our learning and making connections with the world around us.

I have been lucky to attend amazing trips to our beautiful marae where we learn more waiata, Te Reo, Tikanga and local history and whakapapa. I have been on sports trips such as swimming, lake swims, Ki o Rahi and Ultimate Frisbee. I have attended BOP/PB Winter Tournament for netball and local tournaments for Battle of the Bays and the Whakatane Exchange. I have also been in the Catering crew, Tamararo and Kapa Haka extension.

My highlights for this year have definitely been Omaio, Manutuke, Muriwai, Waihere, Uawa and Auckland trips. The teachers are incredibly nice and have high expectations of us. They encourage everyone to take up opportunities and leave our school with a legacy. I have grown so much at GisInt. It has been awesome!

Petiata Bowden

Gisborne Intermediate has been a journey of discovery. At first I was a little anxious yet that magically melted away as I quickly realised this was a school full of excitement and adventure! Year 7 started with a hiss and a bang, noticeably we had the freedom to choose from a smorgasbord of prospective options.

The categories of experiences ranging from sports, academic, cultural and leadership offer you a chance to dine on them all or snack at just some. With the encouragement and guidance of talented and diverse teachers you can prepare to find out new things about yourself, new talents you never knew you had!

By Year 8, like a piece of coal in the right environment, you will shine like a diamond. The challenges of leadership opportunities are extremely rewarding. Gisborne Intermediate offers the perfect environment to guide you on your travels (literally you get to go away too) and for me, this environment gives me the confidence to take the next step on my life journey. GisInt has had a big impact on me and I feel blessed to have experienced so much it has to offer.
