First class tuition Excellent links to industry

When choosing to study in the UK it is vital that you choose an institution with a strong reputation for academic excellence. Both Kaplan Financial and Holborn College offer a high quality of tuition, with many of our lecturers having industry experience to complement their academic qualifications. This gives their teaching a real-world perspective, and helps you to understand concepts by relating them to real-life scenarios.

If you are looking for a professional qualification then Kaplan Financial is an excellent choice. All 12 of our full-time ACCA centres have Platinum Status, which is the highest level of recognition offered by the ACCA to tuition providers. We are also an ACCA approved publisher, which means that your tuition and study materials work in harmony to help you pass your exams.

Holborn College offers quality undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from renowned UK universities such as Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Wales and the University of London International Programmes. It offers students a focused and friendly environment for the study of business and law, with one of the biggest libraries in the UK private sector.

Completing a degree or professional qualification in the UK is a great achievement, but in order to ultimately achieve your career goals you will also need to take your first successful steps onto the career ladder.

Kaplan Financial and Holborn College have excellent links to industry that can help you, both during and after your studies. Whilst you are with us our industry contacts help to keep your teachers’ examples relevant. They also provide our Careers Service with a range of internship opportunities that you can apply for. You can find out more about these on the careers page of this prospectus (page 28). Internship opportunities may be limited by visa restrictions.

Value for moneyWhether you are looking for a professional qualification or a degree, you’ll want to make sure that the course you choose is worth your time and money. We offer a range of high-quality courses at very competitive prices. In particular our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees are far cheaper than those offered by traditional UK universities.

For example, an international student studying at a top university in London, Birmingham or Manchester can expect to pay upwards of £12,000 a year for their course. Our prices are less than half of these, which gives you the freedom to concentrate on your studies rather than worrying about financing your next semester of study.

Experience UK city livingKaplan Financial and Holborn College offer you a total of 14 different study locations in the UK, more than any other UK provider. The vast majority of these campuses are based in city centres, which gives you the opportunity to experience life in a UK city whilst you study. Our centres are focused on your academic and professional development, and as such they differ from the campuses of UK universities.

They are a lot smaller, which gives you the chance to get to know your fellow students a lot quicker, and they are usually surrounded by commercial buildings, which means you are often studying right next door to organisations that operate in the industry you are learning about.

Once you have finished your course our links are of further benefit to you. We know what the industry is looking for in an applicant and we can help you to develop a CV and an interview technique that will give you a competitive edge. You will also find that many businesses that you approach will have Kaplan or Holborn College alumni in their ranks already, which means that your qualification and where you studied it will be recognised by the people that matter.

Many big names in industry trust Kaplan to teach their new recruits, and this level of trust that household names such as Ernst and Young, HSBC, Deloitte, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers put in Kaplan is testament to our quality and the level of opportunity that studying with us provides.

Overview of the cityGlasgow is a thriving city situated on the River Clyde on the South West coast of Scotland. It is a small, friendly city with fantastic amenities and is less than an hour and a half from the southern highlands, which boasts some of the world’s most dramatic mountain scenery.

A Christian missionary by the name of St. Mungo founded Glasgow and turned it into a major religious centre. After his death, wars swept through the country, one of the most well-known (thanks to a little film called “Braveheart”) involving William Wallace who defeated the English at Bishop Castle in Glasgow in 1296. Glasgow has an academic history to be proud of; the first institution of higher education in Glasgow appears as early as 1451 with the creation of the University of Glasgow.

Historically Glasgow is also known for its merchant trading, as well as being the shipbuilding capital of the world. It’s been referred to the as world’s first post-industrial city and has reinvented itself several times over the past hundred years. These days, Glasgow is known for its art, music and architecture (and two very famous football teams; Celtic and Rangers). Glasgow’s most famous son is the comedian Billy Connolly.

The location of the centreLocated in the heart of the city centre between Glasgow Queen Street Station and Glasgow Central Station, our Glasgow campus is very easy to get to. The city centre location also means that the centre is reachable by local bus services and also by Glasgow’s famous underground system (known locally as the Clockwork Orange).

Our centre is also in close proximity to a number of quality bars, restaurants and coffee shops, allowing our students to enjoy some culinary delights at lunch and break times. Cafe Wander is our own personal favourite and is situated in the basement of our building.

Teaching at our colleges may differ to the teaching you have experienced in your home country, with increased variety in the learning process. Our award-winning teachers have dedicated their lives to changing your life through education. Many have worked in your areas of study and have the expertise that only years of experience and industry knowledge can bring. All our tutors are available outside of formal classroom time to answer your questions.

Our experience shows us that different courses require different teaching styles, so how we teach you depends on your chosen course of study.

Degrees and Masters programmesTeaching comprises lectures, seminars and workshops which encourage students to take an active role in their studies through supervised discussion, debates and presentations. All classes are led by a professional academic.

LecturesThe most traditional method of university teaching, lectures are the largest classes and tend to last one to two hours. A lecturer will talk about the subject of study, and students are expected to take notes, even where handouts are provided. They are designed to give a basic understanding of the particular subject under study, which a student will be expected to enhance through private research.

SeminarsThese are interactive discussion groups, with your tutor and a limited number of students present (usually 20-25). The tutor will discuss a prearranged topic with the class, who are expected to have prepared and read in advance in order to take part fully in the debate. Students may be asked to prepare a presentation for the class, which will then lead to the discussion.

WorkshopsThese are meetings between a tutor and a small number of students (usually up to 15) to discuss work in progress, or to carry out practical work.

Contact timeWe offer comparatively high class contact time with 12-20 hours teaching a week, ensuring that students will have all of the information they need to successfully complete their course.

Students are also expected to work independently, taking total study time to approximately 40 hours per week.

Study skillsAs an experienced international education provider, we understand the difficulty students face when adjusting to a new education system. To facilitate this, each of our programmes includes study skills modules and academic writing classes, to familiarise students with the English education system.

Revision classesWe recognise that after their lectures students will face challenging, and often unfamiliar, forms of assessment. To help international students maximise their grades, we offer comprehensive revision practice. During the term, we also coach students in the skills required for coursework and examination techniques, in order to improve confidence and ability when facing final assessment.

Professional qualificationsWe have taught professional qualifications for more than 50 years and have taught more than half of the students that have won an ACCA Gold Medal over the past four years. Study for a professional qualification has a slightly different focus to studying for a degree, as the only assessment method is examinations.

Not only are our tutors experts at their subjects but they are also experts at showing students how to pass exams and to maximise their chance of success.

Classes for each subject last from 9.30 to 4.30 spending the whole day on one subject. The teaching is a mixture of traditional lecturing and note-taking, class discussions and the all-important question practice. Students will be in college three days a week.

The last three weeks of the course are exclusively revision and question practice, preparing you for your exams.

AccommodationChoosing accommodation with Kaplan Financial and Holborn College is slightly different to the process that you would associate with a large campus-based university in the UK. Our students do not live on campus, instead they live in a part of the city that they choose and travel to their chosen college each day.

This has several advantages. It gives you more opportunity to experience life in the city where you choose to study. It also means that you get to practise your English more every day as you will interact with more people on a daily basis. Lastly it also means that you are able to choose a location that suits your own interests outside of class, and your budget requirements too.

Accommodation via Kaplan International Colleges (KIC)We have an accommodation scheme in collaboration with Kaplan International Colleges that all students applying to Kaplan Financial and Holborn College can access. Through this scheme you can choose from a range of accommodation options including single en-suite, single shared flat, and twin rooms.

Assessment in this phase takes the form of a 3,500 word research proposal. This research proposal, once approved, will form the heart of the dissertation.

Summary of research phaseStudents are expected to complete a 20,000 word piece of original research in the form of a dissertation. Students select and formulate their own research project with guidance from their module tutor and their supervisor. The only restriction on topic is that it has to have a strong Business/Management content. Our experience of advanced level dissertations demonstrates that they vary greatly in nature between students. Some, for instance, have a strong international focus whilst others relate to a single country or company. Some dissertations are qualitative in their approach whilst other students adopt high-level statistical analysis.

Progression optionsMost students tend to return to their profession or to start a new career whilst a few do decide to continue with their academic studies such as a PhD or MPhil.

Program optionsThere are three full-time programs available:

• CFA® Program• CFA® Extended Program

(New for 2011)• CFA® + Program known as

the Analysis, Risk and Fund Management Program

CFA® Program structureThe exam consists of three levels, each of which must be passed before progressing to the next. There are no time limits for completing all three levels. The Level I exam is in both June and December of each year. The Level II and III exams are only available in June of each year. Classes take place between January and June. The exam date is the first Saturday in the month. All three levels consist of two three-hour papers taken on the same day.

Extended CFA® Program structure (New for 2011)Our extended CFA® program prepares students to take the same CFA® exams as detailed above but, instead of six months preparation time for each exam, students are given nine months. Level I classes take place between September and June and April to December each year. Levels II and III classes take place between September to June each year. This allows students more time to prepare for the exams and makes it easier to organise their stay in the UK.

CFA® + Program structureThe CFA® + Program is a unique opportunity not only to study for the CFA® but also to study for two additional qualifications, giving a far greater exposure to the techniques and instruments used by market practitioners. On completion candidates will hold the following designations:

• Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®)• Chartered Alternative Investment

Analyst (CAIA)• Financial Risk Manager (FRM)

CAIA focuses on alternative investments covering; hedge funds, real estate, private equity, commodities and managed futures. FRM focuses on market risk, credit risk, operational risk and risk management in investment management. With the global credit crunch the investment community is looking at risk with a much greater emphasis. The CFA® + Program starts with CFA® Level I as above. After sitting the first part of the CFA® exam students move on to combine CFA® Level II with CAIA in Years One and/or Two and CFA® Level III with FRM in Year Three. CAIA examinations are held in mid-September each year with results available approximately one month later. This gives students the opportunity to take a break from studies between November and January. FRM examinations are held in mid-November each year with results becoming available in January.

Other courses In addition to these qualifications, all our international students are given the option of studying towards our six-day financial modelling courses which take place in December each year.

Progression optionsStudents who graduate from this degree often seek employment although some students continue their studies with a MBA.

Career optionsThe CFA® Program is an incredibly prestigious qualification to obtain, and it should come as no surprise that graduates progress on to work in some of the most competitive and most well-rewarded professions in the city.

Graduates from our courses in the past have achieved great success as:

• Bankers• Investment Bankers• Equity Analysts• Fund Managers

“I am based in Gibraltar so classroom based tuition was not practical and I would rather have a course which I can study at a time to suit me. I looked at distance learning and Online options and decided that the latter was more flexible and suitable to my needs. The combination of text, questions, tests and recorded lectures provide good overall understanding and good practice for the exam.”
