Proposal for New Undergraduate Major in Biosciences with Major Concentrations in Biochemistry, Cell Biology & Genetics,

Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, and Integrative Biology

Summary

The proposed major in Biosciences is intended to provide undergraduate students with

a rigorous, balanced, yet flexible path towards either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or

Bachelor of Science (BS) in the life sciences. The proposed major is intended to replace

the current majors: BA and BS in Biochemistry and Cell Biology, BA and BS in Ecology

& Evolutionary Biology, and BA in Biological Sciences1. Compared to these existing

majors, the proposed major is intended to accomplish the following objectives:

● Provide a foundation in the biological sciences that is consistent for all

Biosciences majors;

● Provide similar opportunities and experiences (e.g. access to experiential

learning, quantitative reasoning, communication training, and capstone

experiences) throughout the curriculum for all Biosciences majors;

● Provide flexibility for students to tailor their program by (1) designing major

concentrations that allow students to focus their coursework within a particular

subfield, (2) decreasing the total number of required courses where possible, and

(3) increasing the number of electives.

To accomplish these goals, a task force was created in 2017-2018 that sought to

reconsider the undergraduate programs in Biosciences by reenvisioning our

undergraduate programs from first principles. The Task Force began by articulating a

list of program learning objectives and followed a backwards design process in which

the coursework was chosen based on how it would achieve elements of one or more

program learning objectives. The Task Force further identified possible areas of focus,

starting with a long list of possibilities but eventually settling on four disciplines:

biochemistry, cell and developmental biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, and

integrative biology. The Task Force presented this basic scheme to the faculty of the

BioSciences department in Spring 2018, and based on their support the Biosciences

Undergraduate Curriculum Committee spent the Fall 2018 semester developing the

details of the proposed new major described here, the details of which have been

approved by the Biosciences faculty and Chair.

The proposal consists of the following elements:

• Draft GA text for BA degree and 4 major concentrations

• Draft GA text for BS degree and 4 major concentrations

• Curriculum Map

• Assessment Plan for each degree/major concentration combination

BioSciences

The BioSciences department unites faculty engaged in research and teaching in a wide range of disciplines within the life sciences, creating a vibrant and diverse community of scholars. The department offers a broad range of introductory and advanced courses that lead to undergraduate BA and BS degrees with a Major in Biosciences with the option to choose one of the following major concentrations: Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Integrative Biology. In addition, a Minor in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and a Minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology are offered.

The BA degree offers a rigorous biological curriculum suitable for many career paths while allowing the flexibility for extended academic exploration in other areas. The BS degree includes similar academic rigor with the addition of experience conducting original research. While undergraduate research is required for the BS degree, all students regardless of their major and welcome and encouraged to participate in undergraduate research, availing themselves of the numerous research opportunities at Rice and in the Houston community.

Both the BA and BS degree with the Major in Biosciences and all major concentrations will prepare students for graduate, medical, or other professional schools and a wide range of careers in the life sciences. In addition, qualified students may apply to a specialized BA-MS-PhD program track. Additional information on departmental programs, courses, and advising is available at the BioSciences website.

The BioSciences department also oversees academic programs that lead to undergraduate degrees with Majors in Environmental Science (BA, BS) and Neuroscience (BA), as well as a Minor in Neuroscience. At the graduate-level, the BioSciences department administers graduate programs in Biochemistry and Cell Biology (PhD, MS) and in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (PhD, MS). In addition, some BioSciences faculty members participate in the Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology (SSPB) PhD program administered by the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering (https://ibb.rice.edu/). Graduate studies include a combination of advanced coursework and individual research with faculty mentors.

Requirements for the BA Degree with a Major in Biosciences and a Major in Biochemistry

For general university requirements, see Graduation Requirements. Students pursuing the BA degree with a major in Biosciences and a major concentration in Biochemistry must complete:

• A minimum of 62 credit hours to satisfy major requirements. • A minimum of 122 credit hours to satisfy degree requirements. • A minimum of 60 credit hours outside of major requirements. • A minimum of 24 credit hours taken at the 300-level or above. • Core courses common to all major concentrations. • The requirements for the major concentration in Biochemistry. When students declare the major in

Biosciences, students must additionally identify and declare one of four major concentrations, either in:

o Biochemistry, or

o Cell Biology and Genetics, or

o Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, or

o Integrative Biology

The BA degree emphasizes broad foundational knowledge of biology with in depth exposure to the subfield of biochemistry. Biosciences majors are strongly encouraged to pursue their research interests through independent research experiences. The BA degree program offers greater flexibility than the BS due to fewer required independent research courses as detailed below.

The courses listed below satisfy the requirements for this major. In certain instances, courses not on this official list may be substituted upon approval of the major’s academic advisor, or where applicable, the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies. (Course substitutions must be formally applied and entered into Degree Works by the major's Official Certifier.) Students and their academic advisors should identify and clearly document the courses to be taken.

Because of the common core requirements, it is possible for students to change their major concentration at any time, even after initially declaring the major. To do so, please contact the Office of the Registrar.

BioSciences

The BioSciences department unites faculty engaged in research and teaching in a wide range of disciplines within the life sciences, creating a vibrant and diverse community of scholars. The department offers a broad range of introductory and advanced courses that lead to undergraduate BA and BS degrees with a Major in Biosciences with the option to choose one of the following major concentrations: Biochemistry, Cell Biology and Genetics, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Integrative Biology. In addition, a Minor in Biochemistry and Cell Biology and a Minor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology are offered.

The BA degree offers a rigorous biological curriculum suitable for many career paths while allowing the flexibility for extended academic exploration in other areas. The BS degree includes similar academic rigor with the addition of experience conducting original research. While undergraduate research is required for the BS degree, all students regardless of their major and welcome and encouraged to participate in undergraduate research, availing themselves of the numerous research opportunities at Rice and in the Houston community.

Both the BA and BS degree with the Major in Biosciences and all major concentrations will prepare students for graduate, medical, or other professional schools and a wide range of careers in the life sciences. In addition, qualified students may apply to a specialized BA-MS-PhD program track. Additional information on departmental programs, courses, and advising is available at the BioSciences website.

The BioSciences department also oversees academic programs that lead to undergraduate degrees with Majors in Environmental Science (BA, BS) and Neuroscience (BA), as well as a Minor in Neuroscience. At the graduate-level, the BioSciences department administers graduate programs in Biochemistry and Cell Biology (PhD, MS) and in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (PhD, MS). In addition, some BioSciences faculty members participate in the Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology (SSPB) PhD program administered by the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering (https://ibb.rice.edu/). The BS degree emphasizes broad foundational knowledge of biology with in-depth exposure to the subfield of biochemistry that includes independent research.

In certain instances, courses not on this official list may be substituted upon approval of the major’s academic advisor, or where applicable, the department's Director of Undergraduate Studies. (Course substitutions must be formally applied and entered into Degree Works by the major's Official Certifier.)
